Incredibly thankful for this free archery range open to the public and serving the South Bay. The range is well maintained with a convenient and spacious parking lot. Easy to get to, and not too far from 85 freeway. First time here was many years ago at the Taste of Archery event for kids, and they loved it. There are quite a few ranges offering different distances for different skill levels. They have a walking course that's pretty cool. It's really overgrown with weeds at the moment and lots of ticks in the tall grass. read more

I like this range and plan to come back. Plenty of random distance targets. You'll see everything from recurves to compound bows.

Any public range with a field archery course is nice to have in the Bay Area and I am grateful that this place exists. This range is a good size range and in a nice accessible location from San Jose, with targets of various distances and elevation for a nice variety. Not the most pleasant place to shoot on a sunny summer day since it gets very hot here. The main issue with this range is with the design. Some of the targets are just too close to each other and the practice area is too close to the parking lot. The practice area also combines close and far distances which can lead to a long wait when there are archers shooting at those longer distances. Other outdoor practice ranges I have been to separate the long and short range targets. Another issue is that some people don't know what they are doing and follow different rulesets for shooting which can lead to miscommunication and safety issues. For example, there were children playing on one side of the practice area while adults were shooting on another side when it is supposed to be one shooting lane. Other times people treat the practice area as one or multiple shooting lanes and there was even one time when someone was shooting not realizing someone else was in there looking for arrows since that person brought their bow and gear with them. While public ranges tend to have people who don't know what they are doing, it seems that this one is especially bad, partly exacerbated by its poor design. read more

Decent clean , windy range. I asked about this the other archers said this is the worst they have ever seen it, I guess but , once I got to the back 14 targets, in the hills and trees not bad at all. Some of the targets tended to off The bales. So some of the time was spent placing targets back on bales. I did see a four and six point bucks. I just moved on and was rewarded by having a good shoot. The first 14 on the walking range tended to be flat and well maintained. Overall a good, 11/2/2019 little irritating when know it all people come up to you and tell you rules of the range. Especially when they can't explain why they have the rule. Love messing with people . But if you cannot explain why you have a rule. Don't try and enforce it. Still like the range read more

Black Mountain Bowmen is a free outdoor range that offers not only target practice at various distances but also an "archery course" (similar to a golf course) where you shoot at various targets situated in different parts of the range. I've been going here occasionally when I want to shoot outdoors (as opposed to an indoor range) and it's great to have the option to practice at farther distances. Indoor ranges are a bit limited in the sense of what distances are possible to practice with. One thing that you'll find at this range is that there are a lot of compound shooters who will be practicing at the longest ranges--that's only natural. One feedback I do have for the range is that the targets could be replaced more often. Note the photo I've added here--it was a bit difficult to practice precision since the inner circle was completely gone. All that said, I see myself coming back here in the future! read more

Its great to have an outdoor range nearby, but there are several safety issues over there that make me go elsewhere. e.g. the most left practice target is too close to the target on the left of it that is not a different "pull"/"shoot" schedule and so people are shooting while others are pulling out arrows dangerously close. Also not to their fault, but FYI it can get really muddy and swampy in rainy seasons - not much to do about that. read more

In my three years of shooting at Black Mt, I have never had a bad experience. There is something for everyone - a practice range near the parking lot, a flat course you can shoot at individual targets with more privacy, and a hilly course with some longer yardage targets. The course is well maintained by a dedicated group of volunteers. The club hosts several tournaments and leagues throughout the year that are very well organized and a lot of fun. read more

This place needs to fix their grounds. I just had $1000 worth of damage to my car because of how unkept their entrance is. I was going slowly and carefully and the bottom of my car still managed to get it ripped off, management needs to do something about this. read more

There isn't any fee and you just have to bring your own equipment. Other archers here are super friendly and love to talk about archery events with you. So incredibly fortunate to have this expansive, beautiful and well-maintained range in my area! Every time I visit, I can hardly believe that they're generous enough to let all archers enjoy their site for FREE. There are numerous targets available at various distances, as well as an amazing course integrated into the nearby hills that lets you shoot from hill to hill...how much cooler can it get?! The icing on top of the cake is the wonderful natural environment; there's a stream and lush grass, and you'll even spot wild fowl and occasional coyotes if you're lucky! I've been coming here for years as an unpaid member. First of all, it's free. Free. So remember that, be polite to others here, clean up after yourself, and READ the range rules and obey them. This is like a mix of archery, hiking, and golf. It's 28 targets spread out on a hiking trail. You can spend all your time on a single target or go from target to target giving yourself 3 arrows per, and keep track of your scores. The first 14 are on a flat part, the second 14 are on a trail that climbs up and winds around a little valley. The second 14 are "hunting style". There is some cover in the second 14, but many parts of this range are exposed. Bring a hat and sunscreen if you tend to burn. The second 14 are SUPER FUN. You get opportunities to take crazy shots over ravines, around trees, and at insane distances (if you are willing to risk losing arrows). I love love LOVE the second 14. For me, this is a form of meditation. Black Mountain is my oasis. I turn off my phone and leave it in the car. It's just me, my gear, and the wind. Life at its most pure and simple. Aim, adjust, breathe, shoot, hike, repeat. Occasionally one of the rangemasters (or whatever they are called, actual members) will give me a little lecture assuming that I'm new. So I have to sit there and listen to them telling me not to throw knives at the targets. Or axes (seriously??). Sometimes it is closed when it's a members-only tournament, so be sure to check the schedule in advance. A couple of times I didn't and couldn't go in. This place is amazing, beautiful, peaceful, and FREE. I do actually prefer King's Mountain Archers in Woodside, but it's a bit farther away. I reviewed King's Mountain separately, but it's basically like this place but with much longer trails, redwood trees everywhere, and great cover / natural protection from the sun. 3 suggestions: 1. Bring your own gear. 2. You, or someone in your group, should be familiar with archery. I don't think they have lessons or anything like that (I could be wrong, I haven't explored that part of it). 3. Kids over 12 are welcome... But that does exclude younger kids. I would say it's not really kid-friendly. This place is for adults and mature teens who want to shoot and enjoy a peaceful environment. There are plenty of places that cater to kids. Awesome place to shoot. There's a good chance you'll need to bring some targets with you for the range. I even started saving cardboard boxes to attach the target to, and then the cardboard to the hay bail. Haven't done the course yet but I plan to. This archery range is so tucked away that I bet you didn't even know it was there. When you arrive, there is a full practice range with ten targets ranging from twenty to seventy feet away. Paper targets are on the hay bales, but I suggest bringing your own, as these are sometimes chewed up. Beyond the range there is a trail with a large number of shooting areas, all at different distances. It is a nice trail that is not overly strenuous. Nothing beats free! Well of course you should donate a few bucks whenever you go so that you can keep the park alive! This archery park consists of many courses you can shoot from. You need to bring your own bow and arrows and keep in mind that there is no one running the range. It's great for kids too! I grew up in the area back when this range was the unused gun range/archery range. I moved away for 10 years and when I returned I discovered a beautiful, functional and well maintained archery range! The best part is that in my time away I had learned archery and purchased my own bow (before Hunger Games, thank you!), and now I have a place within walking distance of my house to go practice at. BMB is close to where I work so it's a great place to stop and shoot for a bit while waiting for southbound traffic to loosen up. The range is kept up pretty well but be wary of the rattlers in the Spring time...they do like to hang out under and behind the targets. If you're looking for a place to shoot a half-round of field targets, go to the upper range...there's too many "campers" on the bottom part that don't get that it's a roving course like golf and you're not supposed to keep shooting the same target over and over for hours. Overall it's a nice range and look forward to going there. On your way out, be sure to visit the donation box and leave them a few dollars! read more

My brother and I come here to shoot around 2 to 3 times a week since we live only 2 miles to this range. It is an excellent range - lots of targets for all kinds of practice as well as a sight-in range. The president of Black Mountain Bowmen is really helpful! Our first time out (we are beginning bowhunters) Bill took time to give us a few pointers and we were impressed enough with his time that we decided to join Black Mountain Bowmen as members. There is a good mix of compound bow shooters, target recurve and casual shooters here to it is a great place to hone your skills and technique for the field. The range is well maintained and I think they cut the grass once a week and they do target maintenance pretty often. Some of the hay targets are softer than others so if you are shooting a high poundage compound bow you can get passthroughs on the targets - just be careful! Being a member here also gives us a discount at Predator's Archery in Gilroy, so that is a cool benefit since we are going to be doing some outfitting in the future. Fun free course. The club president happened by one day and gave my daughter a free lesson.

DO NOT COME HERE... if you plan on enjoying a day at the range with your family. Children (though accompanied by adults) are NOT welcome. We tried to enjoy the range while there was a dry spot in the weather, but could not. The range master followed us with his eyes from the moment we stepped foot on the range. He was searching for moments he could jump in a scold us for one thing or another, even if we were not doing anything. A friends daughter brought her bow over and asked if she could use the tree as a target, we proceeded to tell her no and explained where she could use the bow. He walked over and said she can't use the tree as a target. I said yes I know, she was just asking and I was telling her no. DUH! She didn't even have the bow in her hands at the time. The other time he scolded us was when the kids were hanging on the gate. He said they could not play on that. So, we told them to walk away and tried to distract them from any type of play because he watched us the entire time. The kids were NEVER out of hand, not even a little. After we had left, a friend of ours told us that the range master told him and his daughter that she could not shoot at the 20 ft target. But why not??? That is what they are for aren't they? Never again will we step foot there, and I urge anyone with a family looking for a good range time, not to either. Never felt so unwelcome anywhere, ever! read more
