Used a groupon for our first archery lesson, which was about $22 total for two people - this included the 20% discount they had that day. I'm always excited to try new experiences and I love doing it with someone who's just as adventurous :') We originally had a one hour lesson scheduled for 2pm, but we were stuck in traffic coming from SJ, but they happily rescheduled us for 3pm. Got there early. Got some coffee around the corner. Got seated at the back and watched the other group before us finish their lesson. They didn't even check our groupon to see if it was us in the beginning or end. We had Mike as our instructor. He was awesome! Seemed very passionate/knowledgable about archery and had tons of experience competing. He was even asked to train the Russia team coach for the Olympics the basic technique (can't really remember, it was something like that...) I loved how he explained everything step by step - how to position your feet, how to properly hold the bow, and how to release. He started off small and worked his way up. We got the hang of it pretty quickly. Like he said, some instructors might take twelve hours to teach us how to shoot an arrow straight and without moving the bow, but he really did it in just a couple shots! I didn't believe it at first, but his suggestions/technique really worked out for us! The most important thing to do to make sure you hit a straight good shot is to NOT think about the arrow/bow or anything that'll distract you - just focus on the ball located right below your target sheet and you'll definitely get a bullseye! And also make sure you have the right stance and aim the string and the arrow where you're supposed to and hold after you release for at least two secs! Such a great first experience with a great instructor! Holding the bow was definitely a workout. My forearm was sore...and so was my hand! The only downside was that we couldn't take any pictures, even when you were spectating because he didn't believe in distractions! Oh well. At least I felt like Legolas from LOTR for a good hour, hehe :)

A few notes after reading the reviews. 1) Jim is really the peak of bowmen....an archer's archer. I've gone hunting with others that have previously hunted with Jim. They told me that Jim took an Alaskan bear at 105 yards with a single arrow. When I confronted him with this, he said, "naw, it was only 100 yards"...... 2) He's been the paid factory rep - the face of the factory - for at least one bow manufacturer. Not an honor lightly achieved. 3) His whole family shoots at the expert level. Some will be there for training events. 4) Jim as a million stories and will give selflessly in showing you, your friends, your class, your league how to shoot. However, he does not suffer fools lightly and if you come in with the "customer's always right" or some other attitude, he will feel no need to help you any longer. Conversely, he is great with kids and clumsies. If you've ever noodled the idea of trying out a bow (I hate using long bows, but compound bows are great fun without pulling yourself apart), I highly recommend that you go visit and ask to try out a rental bow for an hour. Very inexpensive. If you don't get hooked, there's always chess or scrap-booking...... Jim - it was a privilege to shoot my first real bow there. My daughter is your biggest fan. I'll be back soon.

I walked in with very little knowledge and walked out not only with everything I needed to get started with a longbow, but also with a wealth of insight and guidance. Jim took an incredibly generous amount of his time to make sure both my partner and I were set up for success, answering every question and making the whole process feel approachable and exciting. He didn't try to oversell anything at all one of the most up front and honest blokes I've come across. It's honestly the first time I've been to a shop that shows this level of care and attention to newcomers, it was an absolutely brilliant experience. Because of Jim, his mate Travis, and everyone else we met there, this is quickly becoming a serious hobby for us. If you've even thought about trying archery, do yourself a favor and stop by, Jim will have you feeling confident and eager to start shooting in no time. No amount of online bow shopping or research will compare to chatting to Jim about what you need! Huge thanks to everyone at the shop, you're all fantastic. Looking forward to those longbow shooting events! Can't thank you all enough!

So, this year I figured we'd up the game a little and do some archery. Not willing to go out and buy a whole bow & arrow set, the next logical thing was to look around and see if anyone offers lessons. Well, I didn't have to look far, as Bowhunters Unlimited (BU) made it all too easy. The Good: *Just contact them thru their website and they'll put you in touch with a member that offers lessons. We lucked out and were matched with Linda, whom I believe is the VP of BU. She was terrific. Very patient, but stern, with a group of precocious teenagers. *They offer yearly memberships for $40/year for unlimited shooting. *BU is a private club that operates in a closed off section of Stevens Creek County Park. The area is beautiful and a great spot for outdoor activities. *Small paved lot w/ port-o-potties *The lesson was much, much cheaper than you'd think. $150/4 ppl for 90min is a bargain in this area of the world. This price includes the bows, arrows, and lessons. The Meh: *The drive up is very windy. So if you're really carsick, then this ain't gonna be for you. *Cell phone signal is spotty at best. Sometimes you have signal and sometimes you don't. It's very odd. The Ugly: *Bugs! So many bugs! I don't know what it is about this corner of the park, but we were being harassed severely by some kinda fly. Fortunately they don't bite, but imagine trying to focus on shooting while bugs fly around your face. Fortunately, I had some bug spray in the car, so that helped a lot. Conclusion: Fantastic location to do some fun old-timey outdoor activities of pretending to kill things! Cuz, Merikkka...

The most attractive class is the Archery Beginner class! The 1.5 hr class cost $85 per person. The class is held at the River Ranch, near the entrance. You can take the free shuttle from the Lodge or just drive there yourself. On the day of the class, we have around 10 students with 2 teachers. Class starts with the detail explaining how to hold your arrow! Everyone takes turns to shoot arrows and then there are mini games & the fun balloon time! Can't imagine being able to shoot the balloon in the first class! Teachers are very patient and watch everyone carefully, so they can point out how to improve the gesture to make a more accurate shoot. They also prepared the arrow for the left-handed, how thoughtful they are! Be prepared to have a sore arm after class, you will shoot arrows for more than 10 rounds! Highly recommended to sign up for this fun experience!
