A friend and I just started getting into archery. We came here as it was one of the go to spots for the area we live. I have to say it's a pretty good place as a starting point for archery. We were able to get a good beginners set and were able to participate in 2 practice sessions. Great experience, staff were mostly professional. Only negative I have to say is an employee there. I hate to be negative, I know customer service jobs are always tough but this man needs to be pointed out. I didn't care to get his name, because the ego on this man was through the ceiling. All I remember is that he dressed like he was on a vacation to Cuba, outdated mustache and oversized/outdated hat. Dude had the audacity to make ignorant jokes about Asians around us Asian customers and two Asian kids volunteering there. Dude also showing off too. I used to go to Archery Only in Newark since it's closer to my home, but have had bad experiences every time I've gone. I would go into the store and stand around for 5 minutes before finally asking someone for help. But at predator's, they make sure you know that they notice you and will attend to you when they can. This is a great shop. They sold me a good functional bow for me at a price I could afford, and then we used their indoor range and they helped me sight it in well enough that I could go to the outdoor range and only make minor adjustments for longer range shots. I have also called in several times and gotten advise on various things and they have always been super helpful and enthusiastic. I can recommend this shop without hesitation. I've been to dozens of shops over at least as many years, and won't use anyone else. I do all my own tuning, maintenance, and arrow building, but I get everything from Predator's if they carry it. The only "downside" is that you are going to get great customer service, just like everyone else, so you might have to wait your turn. read more

Predator's Archery came highly recommended to us by our instructors at the ourtreach program for San Francisco Archers. I was doubtful that this place was so much better than the closer one, but we were told that they would really take the time to fit us with the proper equipment and they had follow up to make sure we would be happy with our purchase. I was a bit skeptical of Predators, given that some yelp reviews mentioned inconsistent experiences and masks. That skepticism was totally off base. When I actually visited the story - my three mask-wearing friends and I were helped by a diverse staff who were happy to geek out about archery with us. There isn't a forced, corporate efficiency vibe here - instead a flow of staff roam through, offering pointers, answering questions, and explaining product details. It almost feels like they are more interested in you enjoying archery than in making sales...kind of a plus actually in my book! One other thing I liked - they are happy to exchange if your not happy with something. And its not just something they say - they really honor that! On my third visit, I mentioned that my wrist guard felt a bit small - they assembled a new one, and immediately swapped mine out, no hesitation. I'll start out with giving a business a 3 stars and then add/remove based on my experience. +1 Full service shop, you can have the shop do everything from buying to servicing your equipments. +1 Pricing is reasonable. Don't compare to online or big box like Bass Pro, small shops can't beat such price, but Predator's price is 'reasonably' marked up and I'll happily pay that premium to support local small businesses. +1 for Sammy. He's throughout and friendly, and dress very nicely. When a young boy came in with his mom and asked for a crossbow, Sam didn't start with selling them a crossbow, he started by firmly addressing the kid that crossbow (and bow), while used for recreation, are real weapons and are never meant to be toys. -1 Messy. the whole shop is a mess. Inventory is everywhere, on the shelves, hangin on walls, piled in corners, tuck under other things, in the workshop, around machines.... -2 Attitude when you didn't buy from them. I spent near $2k on a good setup and they were extremely nice. but my next rig was bought used from a friend and when I brought to the store for customization and tuning, damn the atmosphere changed real fast. I understand the shop makes the most from selling new bows but I'm happy to pay more for tuning/services as well. Also, servicing is how you keep customers loyal. read more

Used a groupon for our first archery lesson, which was about $22 total for two people - this included the 20% discount they had that day. I'm always excited to try new experiences and I love doing it with someone who's just as adventurous :') We originally had a one hour lesson scheduled for 2pm, but we were stuck in traffic coming from SJ, but they happily rescheduled us for 3pm. Got there early. Got some coffee around the corner. Got seated at the back and watched the other group before us finish their lesson. They didn't even check our groupon to see if it was us in the beginning or end. We had Mike as our instructor. He was awesome! Seemed very passionate/knowledgable about archery and had tons of experience competing. He was even asked to train the Russia team coach for the Olympics the basic technique (can't really remember, it was something like that...) I loved how he explained everything step by step - how to position your feet, how to properly hold the bow, and how to release. He started off small and worked his way up. We got the hang of it pretty quickly. Like he said, some instructors might take twelve hours to teach us how to shoot an arrow straight and without moving the bow, but he really did it in just a couple shots! I didn't believe it at first, but his suggestions/technique really worked out for us! The most important thing to do to make sure you hit a straight good shot is to NOT think about the arrow/bow or anything that'll distract you - just focus on the ball located right below your target sheet and you'll definitely get a bullseye! And also make sure you have the right stance and aim the string and the arrow where you're supposed to and hold after you release for at least two secs! Such a great first experience with a great instructor! Holding the bow was definitely a workout. My forearm was sore...and so was my hand! The only downside was that we couldn't take any pictures, even when you were spectating because he didn't believe in distractions! Oh well. We were the only ones there that day but Mike was an excellent teacher in giving tips about archery as well as making me rethink life philosophy. We both had a lot of fun and learned so much about setting up the bow and the sport in general. There's a lot of ways to keep up your skills at ranges and competitions in the area. I decided to get back into archery after having my bow sitting in a closet for about 10 years. I needed to have it restrung just to be safe and I felt better about doing it at an archery place other than somewhere like Bass Pro. It took about 2 weeks to get my bow back but Mike, Curtis and Sammy were all very helpful and nice. They spent a lot of time with me giving me tips and advice. I took the bow to Black Mountain range the next day and was having a lot of trouble getting my arrows nocked. Pretty much every time I would draw back the string the arrow would pop off the rest to the left. A man that works at the range, Bill, told me that I needed to get a different rest, like a whisker biscuit. I didn't want to do this but the way I was doing it I wasn't getting any arrows shot anyway. So I went back to Predators all set to buy one but Sammy said, "Let's take a look at your form." He took me to their range and figured out that the problem was the way I was gripping the arrows. He had me try gripping the string just under the arrow instead of above and below as I had been doing and that seemed to work a lot better. Bottom line is I was all set to buy a bunch of new equipment but Sammy said, "I think I can fix you without spending any money." I really appreciated that. That shows me that the guys at Predators are more interested in having happy customers than selling unnecessary products. read more

I made our group reservation extremely late by arriving 15 minutes later than intended and yet John was still very accommodating although about to cancel our reservation and ask us to reschedule. John taught us all the basics and safety involved and even bantered with us when necessary. And once he (and we) felt comfortable, he let us shoot on our own under his supervision of course. I'm very passionate about archery. If you have stumbled here brand new to archery don't buy an amazon bow go to a archery shop. They can help you save time and you'll actually enjoy yourself. You are going to spend a little more but it's worth it. That being said I try to do things the right way as best I can. Ive gone to different bow shops to mix up what pieces of advice I get as well as mix up the different products each shop had to offer. For a long time I operated with bad form and I wasn't being provided help or feedback by different shops I frequented. It wasn't an issue with accuracy for me in general because my bad form was very repeatable for me, the problem is it produced very specific issues for me and I'd ask specific questions on it that should prompt a shop to immediately see your form and what your doing so you can clean it up. I typically didn't see that response most places I went. Sure when you buy a new bow, the day you buy it they go through the whole gambit and show you how and everybody does that it is good help 9 times out of 10 but if you just going in buying a few things, a lot of places won't take the time to understand what your asking to really help you. Predator Archery is out of the way for me so I had only gone there once maybe twice when I was in the area a few years ago. Those encounters were typically brief, so I never got to experience what the predator shop had to offer. Because of a freeway closure I found myself at that shop a little while back, and I ended up buying a new bow. Billy and Dan had helped set it up and it was good experience. They gave me good advice an feedback throughout the process and they even had my wife testing out new bows. After I brought it home, I had noticed a little cable contact on the cam that I thought had began to wear my serving but the wear was actually just a normal wear from the last major rollover on the cam cable track and not related to the cable contact. I went to the shop to have it looked at and Sammy was a big help and really dialed in my bow. Just stacking arrows. I had a few questions and asked about something I was noticing about my shot at distance and he gave me form advice to try and it worked. I felt like I was being heard and more importantly getting the help I had been looking for. I was going to lineup some of the free lessons you get here when you buy a bow. Before I had a chance to set up a lesson, my grip caused my bow to derail and once again I had to go back to the shop. This time both Sammy and the owner Curtis were there to help me and got everything fixed up. Curtis took his time to really figure out what was going on and he showed my major form flaws that needed to be fixed so it doesn't happen again. I've been shooting bows since 2018 and I wish I had come here when I got started. The worst feeling is when you go anywhere for any kind of service and yeah you get the service you need done but you leave with some questions unanswered and the feeling like your doing something wrong but no one is actually trying to help. You can get by with focusing on being repeatable but the insecurity of not being confident in your process is the worse feeling. Every archery shop is passionate about archery. This review is for their archery lesson. I came here on a Sunday with a group of friends for an hour archery lesson, and it was a lot of fun! Our instructor John showed us how to use the bow and arrow. I loved how he took time to teach every individual, so we would know how to hold it properly. After we were all comfortable with the bow and arrow, we were allowed to start shooting at the wall. There was a red pin for us to aim at. The instructor gave us a lot of helpful tips to make us shoot very accurate. My favorite part of the lesson was definitely when he placed the balloons on the wall. I really enjoyed aiming for the balloon, even though it took me longer to pop it. Overall, this archery lesson got me really excited about archery. Purchased one hour instruction through Groupon for a family of four for $50. Store is located on Monterey rd, parking is in front of the store on the street, free 2 hr parking. Went in to the shop, bows range in cost from $170 to $800. Mike Pierce is the owner and trainer. He is a prior US and World champion who still competes today and has trained 35 world champions. His friendly, laid back style to focus on one thing at a time works. The lesson and shooting range is indoors, no AC, just a fan recirculating air, which a little noisy but effective. His instruction is very simple, how to hold the bow, how to draw and load an arrow, finger position, arrow feathers under your nose, hold bow steady, if right handed close left eye and line up "ball" target with right eye, if left handed reverse this. Draw arrow back, look past string and aim directly down arrow to tip, line up with ball, then shift aim back to bow, then release, hand should snap back, keeping looking at bow, then you can look at where bow went. If you do this repeatedly, your arrows should land in a close cluster, with repeated practice you will be able to hit the same point again and again. It's nice to hit the bullseye, but when you aim you aren't aiming directly at it, but off lower to the right slightly and then you will hit it if you follow his guidance. It was a fun hour learning how to shoot for the first time. Well worth the groupon entry price for one hour of instruction. I may return in future for fun to practice and pick up some more tips. I felt I was a natural and with practice can get better. Don't have the time to put in 4 years to be a world champion but just do it recreationally. We visited this shop after my wonderful husband gave me a new Bowtech bow last Christmas. We visited this place for two reasons. I wanted to get my new bow tuned properly and also to tune my 26 year old Browning compound to fit my husband, as I was bequeathing it to him. Upon arrival, I was met with very knowledgable and friendly attendants who assisted me right away. It was nice that they didn't avoid me just because I'm a female. I was really glad they didn't assume the "She's with him" mentality. I consider myself a not-so-novice archer, as I have been shooting for about 26 years. Anyway, after getting a new set of custom arrows and tuning my new bow, I end up talking to Curtis, who turns out to be friends with someone I know. Curtis is also one of the two owners of the shop. He is a super nice and very knowledgeable archer. I was lucky to exchange words with him. He spent a lot of time with me, making sure that things fit right, offering options for what performance upgrades I wanted -- in several different price ranges -- and even if I didn't have an appointment, he spent a lot of time teaching me how to use a release correctly. (I'm used to "fingers" with my old Browning.) He made me, and my husband, feel like valued customers, and better yet, made us feel like we were long lost friends of his. I know he's not like this just because we have a mutual friend. I saw his unequivocally equal interaction with the other patrons. We left his shop feeling more than satisfied. I want to preface this interview by saying that the folks I have met at the range who are associated with Predator are great and very helpful. They offer a great service to the community and even host archery classes for YMCA kids. This is not a review on them, but a review on the shop staff. I moved down to San Jose recently and after looking around for an archery store, I settled on Predator due to recommendations from individuals at a local public archery range (and seeing their truck there constantly, I guess those banners on cars really work). Went in two weeks ago on a Wednesday to purchase some arrows. After walking around the store for a few minutes I was offered some help by someone who I assume is the manager. He had to stop his personal conversation to come and help me. I came in knowing what I wanted, so I did not need much help, and purchased 6 arrows. Apparently they were busy and would not be able to have them ready for a few hours, so I paid up front and said that I would come by and pick them up Friday afternoon since I would be passing by the shop on a road trip down to LA anyways. Friday came around and I called 2 hours before I was coming down to confirm that the arrows were ready, I was told that they were. I arrived at the shop to pick up my arrows and after speaking with the same individual who sold them to me he went in the back to I grab my arrows I had assumed. Instead, he came back out, grabbed a kid who was sitting behind the counter and brought him in the back to give him the arrows. THEY WEREN'T EVEN CUT YET! The kid started working and the manager came back out front to help with other customers, did not acknowledge me or tell me what was going on. After helping those customers he then left the store, still not acknowledging me or saying sorry. There was one other employee there with longer black hair in a ponytail, who did not offer any help either, instead he sat behind the counter playing pokemon go. After 19 minutes and 35 seconds (Correction, Store owner reached out to me to tell me that he reviewed the cameras and I was only in the store for 19.5 minutes) the kid came out with my arrows, I took them in a rush not wanting my trip to be delayed any further. After inspecting the arrows the next day I saw some cuts that were not even straight, horrible glue jobs and tips that were not fully seated. I debated on writing this because the truth is the arrows shoot fine and the issues I had with them are easily cleaned up, but all of this could have been avoided with some communication, something that this shop clearly does not partake in. read more

Going into a specialty shop like Predator's, or any other brick and mortar, can be a bit intimidating. Especially for someone like me who has very little experience or knowledge of the sport. Sure I did a lot of research online and understood some of the lingo but, nothing compares to the real thing. This shop is within walking distance of my home but I often times opted to hit up the big shops in the area. There are two primary ones close by and those who are familiar with the area will know which ones they are. To my suprise and something I will soon come to appreciate was when the associate at the big shop recommended Predator's Archery and more specifically, he said "talk to Curtis or Mike" (the owner/s). Having a budget in mind, and sort of knowing what I wanted, I headed down to the shop one night after work. My first impression as I walked in was "wow, this place is tiny and there is stuff everywhere". However, that feeling disappeared rather quickly as I started to hone in on the products i was interested in....BOWS! And boy do they have a lot of them. Luckily for me, the shop wasn't really busy and I was fortunate enough to have Mike come out and help me. As I proceeded to explain what I was looking for and how much I was interested in spending, what brands I was considering, and that I was a lefty, he scanned the wall. Unfortunately, and fortunately, he only had 3 bows. A Hoyt RX-3, RX-4, and a Mathews VXR 28. Sadly, my top choice was the VXR 31.5. After a quick search of various boxes scattered around the shop, he found an unopend VXR 31.5 and what do you know, it was a left handed model. This is really when the excitement began...for me at least. As Mike began to open the box, I stopped him and was upfront and honestly told him that I was not fully prepared to buy at that moment and didnt want him to waste his time. These things are not cheap! Much to my surprise, he just said "that's not a problem, you will be back!" As I transformed into a kid in a candy store, he took the new bow in the back, measured my draw length, and set the bow up for me to test. Keep in mind, it did not have all the bells and whistles but I was able to shoot. Fast forward a few weeks, I went back into the shop and had an opportunity to speak to Curtis about the same bow. Luckily for me it was still available. As I gave Curtis the history, I told him that I would return in a week or so to purchase the bow. (this was in between the holidays) Where my already amazing experience got even better was when Curtis took the bow, placed a sold tag on it, and began to ask about accessories. After speaking with him for about an hour, I had a full list of components, a bow, and arrows all ready for me to pick up in another week. On pick up day, I had the pleasure of speaking to Sammy. He is, as other reviews have stated, very friendly, helpful, and knowledgeable. He helped get my bow together, paper tuned it, and helped me with some pointers. I am now the proud owner of a 2020 Mathews VXR and ready to get after it in 2020. In summary, if you are looking to get into archery, need some gear, or want to fling some arrows down range, Predator's Archery is amazing. The staff is friendly, knowledgeable, and you can certainly tell that they love what they do. Patience is key here though, and if you have a phobia in tighter spaces, perhaps take a deep breath and try to relax before you head in. There is a lot of stuff chaotically organized. Their customer service is fantastic and I can honestly say that I've never had a more pleasant experience. They specialize in all things archery. They also have a deal where you get 4 lessons with a real professional with every bow purchase. Can't say that for any other local shops that won't even let you touch a bow. They have two ranges on either side of the shop and food is abundantly found at many of the local eateries. This shop reminds me of the mom and pop bicycle shops of old where parts seemed to be scattered all over the place but to the shop owner, it was perfectly in order. I've recommended this place to two of my close friends and within the last two weeks, they both bought bows. read more
