This is a small place that I had never heard about but my friends are big fans of their pastries. There are several tantalizing looking flavors as I love a good cream puff. I ordered the chocolate with the chocolate cream and the cookies and cream with vanilla cream. I enjoyed the chocolate one more because I love chocolate so much, but also, it wasn't too sweet. It really helps to savor the flavor more when you aren't cringing by a thick sugary flavor that almost stings your teeth and throat. The cookies and cream coating on the cookies and cream one was okay, but it could have used more Oreo crumbles/flavor. Well I caved last p.m. too! I'm in town just for the weekend for Universal theme park. I try to hit this area up when I'm in town as you can get lunch/dinner upstairs and come down for dessert. First you choose your shell. Either a plain one with nothing on top, or an eclair with icing (chocolate, strawberry, green tea, Oreo, honey butter, s'more, churro). Then you choose a filling (chocolate, green tea, vanilla, ice cream). Occasionally they'll introduce special flavors and special collaborations. The choux pastry that holds everything together is light and slightly crisp. An ideal vessel to deliver the soft burst of velvety custard. Quality and consistency of the filling has gone down over the years but it's still a sweet treat. Besides their signature cream puffs, they also have mini puffs, mini eclairs, and other select desserts and beverages. You can also buy the custard separately if you just want a cup of that. Only the vanilla filling was better in Japan. Price has climbed up to $4.25 for the plain shell, but I don't find that outrageous given the cost of the surrounding area. The employees were also kind. I enjoyed my Original puff filled with green tea cream. The pastry cream was balanced in sweetness, matcha flavor, and egginess. My boyfriend got the Cookie Crumble (white chocolate Oreo) shell with chocolate filling. I always thought the dipped shells were just okay. The taste does not justify the extra calories for me lol. While the chocolate filling improved, it tasted too much like chocolate pudding. So I'm still not a fan of standard chocolate (and probably vanilla) filling here. read more

March 1st, 2025 @ 7:00pm I was meeting up with a friend here who lived about an hour away and just as he was about to arrive, the worker kicked us out because we were "taking the seat of paying customers". It was incredibly rude as we let the employee know that our friend was about to arrive and we would be happy to make a purchase now as it was dark outside and we didn't want to wait in the cold. The employee said No to us making a purchase because the other customers already paid first. We didn't know it was a new rule and that's not usually how it works at all. It was strange because there were enough seats for the other customers. I asked if the customer next to us wanted to take my seat and they declined. Not much to say, but Beard Papa is a great little cream puff pastry restaurant in a small shopping Center in the Sawtelle area. They have an assortment of difference types and flavors of the cream puff themselves and you can select between a cream filling or ice cream. We ended up going with the plain puff and ice cream filling, which was a large portion and delicious. The puff was airy with a toasty exterior. The other puff options are a little out there, but the variety of selections would make for a great treat for events. They have deals if you order a dozen or larger quantity orders and they even have a loyalty stamp card program for frequent visitors. The parking is a little chaotic, but it's a ticketed lot with an attendant and there is underground parking. I believe there's a $10 spend minimum for the parking to be validated, which I imagine isn't that hard at any of the stores located in the center. The staff was very friendly and the service was quick. The only observation was that a lot of the indoor dining area was not set up when we went around midday. I don't know if this is typical, but we took our good to go, so it wasn't a big deal. read more
