So glad beard papa has finally made its way to Houston! I have been eating it for years in Taiwan and would usually get a daily cream puff. I think the beard papa hype has officially died down (thank goodness) so when I went this past weekend there were only 3 people ahead of me. I had the strawberry w vanilla, honey butter w/ vanilla, original w/ vanilla, and original w/ cookies n cream. All were very good and filled with their cool and delicious cream. I love how the filling is not too sweet and actually has a distinct flavor. I definitely would eat them ASAP so the puff does not get soggy and the cream stays cool. Overall I was very impressed that these taste basically identical to the ones I've had in Asia. The wait was a little long for a few cream puffs and the drive was far from my side of town. I actually like this place better than Bibble & Sip in NYC! I think the cream puffs are different; they're fluffier and smaller here whereas at Bibble & Sip, the dough was denser and the cream was heavier. They're medium sized cream puffs that are made to order (and they seem to have some pre-made/display maybe?) with various fillings. I liked how light and fluffy the cream was, and everything was really fresh. We tried the standard cream puff with green tea filling, and also the creme brulee cream puff. Omgosh, both were so good! You have to eat the creme brulee cream puff within 30 minutes though apparently... no problem, we ate them within 5 minutes of getting them lol. read more

Must be new as the store is pretty plain in decor. I got the classic. It was not overly sweet, which I liked. The bun was misshapen, as if a newbie poured too much batter and it oozed onto the cookie sheet in a blob. Then, no one cared enough to discard it to keep everything standard. Wow these cream puffs are AMAZING. My family and I came on Saturday night and there was no wait. Inside the store, it's very cute and has lots of opportunities to get Beard Papa's merch (shirts, mugs, bobble head) in addition to the food. We got the honey and butter cream puff with ice cream. It was SO GOOD. The cream puff was crispy and paired very well with the ice cream. The almond with vanilla cream was also very delicious. We also got a cream cheese one, that we preferred less than the other 2 but was still good. Overall, would highly recommend coming here. I will definitely be back. read more

Recently went back and ordered the caramel with chocolate filling. It was the perfect combination! I really liked the chocolate filling as it was not overbearing. I also ordered the strawberry matcha latte and it tasted just as amazing as it looks! I think it has an even level of strawberry and matcha, where you taste both flavors evenly. I've had their cream puffs before but I haven't had the chance to actually enjoy them in the store front. They have ample seating and even a swing chair. Although they did run out of some flavors like honey butter we were able to try the chocolate, green tea, Crême Brûlée, and strawberry. All were delicious. The pastry was crisp and light on the outside and the pastry cream was amazing. It wasn't too sweet and was the perfect choice of dessert to end the night with. Came here on a Sunday night around 6:30pm and it wasn't busy at all. I was waiting til the hype died down a bit before making the trek to Katy. You can order the cream puffs by icing flavor and also by cream flavor (inside). It's a small place with a handful of seating so I saw quite a few people just get it to go. There were also drinks available. I got the strawberry iced cream puff with vanilla cream and the matcha iced cream puff with matcha cream. The vanilla cream filling was very good and not overly sweet at all. The matcha cream filling was good but the taste really stuck in my mouth and I really wanted to wash it down with something. The icing for both was good and sweeter the the cream. The cream puffs were palm sized and light and airy. I don't think I'll pay this price for them but it's worth a one time try. read more

Dam talk about long wait. I been to their Osaka location was never like this. Two days it took me to get some cream puff. Grand opening days was turn away because they ran out of the stuff. And second day they ran out of strawberry favorite when I ordered bummer. I understand this is their grand opening but dang this is ridiculous. They should planned this a lot better even for grand opening. Now on to the cream puff . I got the original favorite. The combination of cream and bread was perfect. I didn't order the drinks was very limited, they already making me mad with the long wait and running out of the products. But you buy five and get one for free. All the amazingness is true! The crispy, croissant-like exterior with the creamy, melt-in-your-mouth custard is worth the 30 minute drive! To get the bang for your buck, purchase 5 to get one free. A shop that specializes in cream puffs? Move out of the way! Shell was perfect, flaky, buttery, and crispy. The fillings were great as well. We tried the creme brulee, original, green tea, and honey butter shell with vanilla, chocolate, and green tea filling. Everyone one of them were great, you can have it in whatever way you want to suit your craving at the time. The creme brulee was probably my favorite one. Negative point, I'm not sure if it was because I went during a thunder storm and everyone wanted to stay in, but all the tables were covered in filth. No one picked up after themselves and all the staff were behind the counter helping with the orders, which I don't think they needed everyone to be back there to fill and pack the creme puffs. No cleaning staff to maintain the seating areas. Also, they didn't have napkins out for you to take and even though we asked for some we got two... Two small and thin napkins for oozing cream puffs. So, here it is now, finally!!! The original puff filled with classic vanilla flavored creamy custard is always the best. I've mixed and matched their different shell and filling flavors and they've all tasted great! I've introduced this place to my family members and they've enjoyed it as well. SEVERAL FLIES LANDING ON PUFFS that you're about to purchase! The staff don't even care about it! We were so excited when we noticed that Beard Papa's was opening in Katy since we had good experience of the quality and taste while back in Japan and other major cities in Asia. Waiting time: We planned ahead to avoid the crowd around 11am but still we waited in the line for 25 minutes and another 15 minutes to get our order. And even just half hour after opening, most of the shell flavors have ran out of stock. Quality: Our order was green tea shell puff and several ordinary puff. The quality are so inconsistent that some of the puffs are just 40% size smaller of the others. It might be the traffic that caused the staff to rush through the baking process without having a proper baking temperature. These pate a choux or puff pastries need a certain and consistent temperature to get to the right size. The green shell puffs were great, good crisps and good flavor, but the original puff were small and soggy because they didn't bake it in the right temperature. All the moisture were still trapped inside. Cleaniness: This has to be the worst experience. At the time we're in line, we saw more than 4 flies landing on those puff shells. HOW ON EARTH Beard Papa's are still selling those products once they're contaminated? I'm sure that the staff saw those flies because they shoo the flies away before they grab a puff shell. A a whole - decent; some issues need to be addressed though. I was so excited for this to open up from the moment I heard my friend mention it. I had no idea what it was until she explained to me that they were cream puffs! When I made the trek out there to try this place out, I was glad I got to try it. Overall, the atmosphere, the food, the service wasn't bad - but it wasn't mind blowing, I'm willing to drive out here every week for it. It's like that cheerleader effect- as a whole it looks great, but when you break down into the details, it's not the best. Ready? Let's dive in. Service: First off, I would like to commend them for letting us know right off the bat what they had left and what was sold out already. They had stationed an employee at the door to let customers know what to expect before they got to the counter. I really appreciated that because it gives you a realistic expectation of what is left. That being said, they only had 3 flavors left: vanilla, green tea, and chocolate ice cream. A decent enough variety, but not the best because if 80% of your menu runs out, then maybe you're not estimating correctly... Food: Since there were only 3 flavors, I went ahead and tried all 3. My favorite was the chocolate ice cream filled, then the vanilla, then the matcha green tea. The cream puff itself was pretty flaky and crispy, but some might say a bit too crispy and not enough of that buttery, melt in your mouth taste. Another big drop for me was the fact that they had flies zooming around in the cream puff case - talk about disgusting and unsanitary. So I did not understand what was all the hype about. A lot people say Papa Beard make Japanese cream puff and it's delicious. Therefore my expectations was high. I pretty much got almost all the flavor there is, that was available. Waited in line for about 15-20 mins. Out of all the flavors, my favorite was probably the creme brûlée. My least favorite is green tea. I felt the cream puff was good but not what everyone says it to be. The cream puff is abit pricy $3.20 & up, however it's a pretty big (palm size). It's made freshly. Boy we were thoroughly impressed with their filling and puff pastries as we bit into these fluffy goodness. I think they are a bit pricey for pastry since I normally get mine from 85 or six ping, but the quality and the fact that these are made in front of your face every day... I'm not even sure how to rate this. I decided to go smack dab in the middle until things improve. I first visited one in Boston. Their store was 10 times smaller and I only waited for 20 minutes. This place is larger and more open. There were 6 tables that I saw in between the mass of people inside. It was only Sunday afternoon over a week after the grand opening. One point in their favor: the line was inside. Unfortunately, it was LOUD. Technically, there were two lines. The one that you see first is the "pick up your order" line. The one slightly to your right alongside the counter parallel to the wall proudly stating "BEARD PAPA'S" in silver is the "I still haven't ordered yet" line. As you stand in the hopefully correct line, you realize that a vast majority of the people seated at the tables are not actually enjoying their puffs - they're still waiting for them. As we got closer to the counter where they're preparing the orders, an employee comes up and starts telling people the wait is 30 minutes to get your order after ordering. It makes sense, since each puff is filled to order, but wow - 30 minutes?? At least the line wasn't out the door (I tried coming by the opening day and that line was LONG and we decided not to be a part of it). It was finally my turn. The puffs start at $3.20 each, depending on flavors, and it's a little more if it's filled with ice cream. Once there, there is an accurate menu of what they offer at that time on the counter (don't follow the menu displayed on the wall). Guess what? They've run out of EVERYTHING except for vanilla original and red bean ice cream filled puffs. Wow. Well at least that gave you less options and, therefore, less time to ponder. Not that I needed to; I only wanted matcha and creme brûlée and maybe one strawberry. I decided to go for a full 6-piece box of vanilla original because it's not like I had a choice. As a note: a purchase of the box gives you a $1 discount; my total came up to be just short of $20. They gave me a receipt with a number. I waited for my buddy to finish placing their order and we left and returned to our headquarters - a boba place right around the corner - until it was closer to the 30 minute mark. We returned around 20 minutes later and there were only 3 more orders before me. Yay! Although we did wait a little longer, it wasn't that bad. I did hear a lot of people grumble under their breaths about the ridiculous wait and how it was a huge waste of time. Can't really blame them. At this point, there was a free table but still a steady stream of customers. I lugged my box to my headquarters and enjoyed a puff with my hubby while my baby stared at me. There are vanilla bean seeds scattered throughout the custard. It was creamy and the puff itself was light and crispy on the outside. Still delicious, even though matcha is still my favorite. Honestly, the wait time is ridiculous, especially if you have a baby with you. Thank goodness it's surrounded by a ton of tea places you can call your headquarters until it's time to pick up. You would think that they would plan to have enough by now so they wouldn't run out of everything but vanilla. That was a major disappointment. It's amazing how it's such a decent sized place, but they can't keep up with it even after a week. The puff itself was scrumptious, but is it worth it? I need to drive 20 miles to get there, so it's pushing it. Not to mention closing times were wrong the first few days online. My next visit will probably when H Mart opens, just so I can compare with the Blalock location. I already have it planned: order first and shop at the market before picking up. Done. Finally a Beard Papa's location in Houston! I've been a fan of the franchise since I first tried their cream puffs in Tokyo, and every year I would devour some when I go to Saigon. My sweet tooth was always satisfied after the first bite! I actually attempted to wait in line yesterday, butthe line was extremely long, and the store seemed like short-staffed/workfow was not smooth. So we backed out after 15' waiting. I came with another friend to the Asian Town today, and the line was not as bad, so we were able to get our orders pretty quickly. I had the crème brûlée cream puff with vanilla filling, and my friend had the oroginal crust with green tea filling. The crème brûlée was a pretty interesting idea, but really, I've had better cream puffs at Beard Papa's in Tokyo and Saigon. The crust was too dry, and the filling was a bit too liquidy for my taste. Though the filling was just the right sweetness, so that was good, at least. My friend was not happy with her green tea puff either, and said it wasn't worth our time waiting in line, even today. 10:30AM Line was wrapped around the building. Left after a few minutes b/c it was too hot outside. 3:30PM Came back in the afternoon and still a line out-the-door but much better than morning. I want to highlight the long wait/long lines because products were sold out by the time we got to the front. Chocolate filling was sold out and we grabbed the last few green tea shells left in the latest batch so I felt limited by what was still available. Cream puffs themselves were too crispy on the outside (maybe go a wee bit easier on the egg wash before baking). Had expected them to eat more like large profiteroles but instead, it was more on the dry/crispy side and the cream filling could have been thicker (ours were a bit runny). The dipped green tea and chocolate eclair shells felt stale on top - meaning there were no taste differences between original shell & dipped shells. I've just come here the one time but their original creme puff is great. The outside is crispy and light, as the puff should be, while the custard on the inside is rich but not cloying. They have the right balance with this and I'll be coming back to try the other varieties. Arrived around 11:15 and waited maybe till 1 PM to order, then wait another 15 minutes to get the cream puffs. It was grand opening day and they opened at 10:30 (not sure if they opened on time but there was a line out the door!). It was nice that one guy came out with a cooler to give cold water bottles. Many people were waiting with kids or older adults and it was pretty hot outside. After waiting so long, when we got inside (there was still a line inside) we saw that they didn't have all the shells on the website, just the ones listed on their menu. So we changed our order and got ready to order. Then we waited and got the counter and then found out that they had no other shells left except original and honey & butter shells. What a huge disappointment. We ordered what they had and then left. I really think they should have planned the operations that day a little better. Considering the massive # of people, I don't think they did terribly, however they definitely could still improve. For one, if you start to run out of things, you need to update the crowd waiting so people don't waste their time. Perhaps a menu/poster that you can cross out things on the outside on the window or the column so that people know what's going on could be nice. Or maybe go down the line and just yell it out so people know what they're waiting for. Having some in the display case was really disappointing as well and really didn't make sense to other customers who also asked "why did they say they were out?" just to walk around the counter and see the ones in the case. If those were displays, maybe mark them as such. If they were food, then I guess the staff decided to keep displays to entice people in with the food they don't even have anymore was more worth it than selling them at that time. Finally, when it came time to eat our cream puffs which were pretty fresh, it just didn't live up to the hype. The shells were good, but they weren't fantastic or special. The cream was a huge disappointment, barely had any flavor, was plain and not enjoyable. We did not like the green tea cream or chocolate cream at all. Vanilla was edible but not enjoyable. For $3.00+ a piece, I would expect a lot better. Not a lot of places sell cream puffs so perhaps people think these are good - I would say they're slightly below average in overall taste. read more
