First time at this establishment. I've had taiyaki in the past was excited to try this place. I find the menu wasn't quite as user-friendly to read as I didn't know what ahboong was and my eyes just gravitated right to taiyaki since I had wanted the fish filling waffle and I didn't know how much it was to add an ice cream with it. I think the menu could be improved on. My cousin and I both had the taiyaki. I got the matcha custard and there was barely any filling. I kept biting into my fish but all I got was waffle with no matcha in sight. And when I finally got close to the tail there was barely a dab of it. I was pretty disappointed. I come to this establish once a week with my family. On Friday, Jan 2 at 8:10pm I went again and ordered what I usually do: an upside down ahbong. This time at the first bite the fish pastry tasted stale, dry and cold. I went back to the establishment and kindly asked if I could get a warm and fresh one. Two employees said that they could not give me a new one because the fish is supposed to be served cold. I understand that you don't want the fish to melt the ice cream but as I glanced at the counter, there were no less than 15 prearranged Nutella coated fish that have been sitting there for what may have been hours. Terrible customer service and it seems like a bunch of teenage workers were just trying to save a few minutes rather than cooking fresh batches of fish pastry every few minutes. My kid loved it! It was pretty cool presentation too & the ice cream is AMAZING! I'm lactose intolerant, so I just had a bite but in my kid days, I would've eaten a ton of this! I'm a big fan of SomiSomi in Carrollton, so I was super excited to try the Katy location. My friend and I split an Ah-Boong (soft serve in a cup with a fish-shaped taiyaki on top). We got the matcha and cookies & cream swirl, which is one of my favorite combos. It was pretty busy when we went (Saturday afternoon), and there was a mix-up with our order - they accidentally gave us only cookies & cream and put fruity pebbles on top even though we didn't ask for them. We let the staff know and they were quick to fix it. Once we got the correct swirl with Oreos and matcha powder topping, it was perfect. The ice cream was smooth and flavorful, and the contrast of the warm, crispy taiyaki with the cold soft serve is just unbeatable. Despite the initial mistake, everything turned out great and I'd definitely come back! One thing to note: this location doesn't really have any seating. There are a few narrow standing counters that maybe fit ten people total, so it can get crowded inside pretty fast. I wasn't sure if I'd like it but I DO! My youngest has multiple food allergies and they have this list of allergens for me to peruse before I ordered. Super friendly staff! The treats aren't too sweet and they're fresh. If you order the filled taiyaki, it's an additional 5 minute wait. This is a chain that originates in LA's Korea town... so my apologies for calling it taiyaki throughout the entire review. They should be bunggeobbang. They also have drinks that sounds terribly intriguing - namely that strawberry milk - but I didn't get it since I only have 2 hands and 3 items already. *To note: no eggs in their products except for taiyaki. There is a number of items with coconut but only one with other nuts - the hoddeok filling. Wheat is in the obvious places - cookie flavors, bunggeobbang pastry. There is no seating! It's quite small but packs up quickly because of how iconic this place is. I got the mix of matcha and banana milk soft serve. I love matcha, and so the flavor was just right. The banana milk, honestly, I did not really love. I've had banana milk itself from the carton, and for some reason I did not put the 2 and 2 together that this was not banana ice cream. It's banana milk ice cream. Banana milk has its own distinct flavor, and that's exactly what it was. It's true to its name I just didn't realize.
