i give this particular place...(it might not be the case for this chain elsewhere) a 5 star rating because they really do have the best size huge cream puffs i have ever tasted. I dont stray from the vanilla filled cream puffs because its the best filling. the bread, when fresh, has a light crunchiness with each bite and sprinkled with powdered sugar...yum...but the best part is the filling...once you bite into it, the filling captivates you and takes you to another land....filled with glorious wonders....but then again i am biased because the last time when i took a bite of the creamy puffery goodness, i saw a really cute japanese girl standing next to me so it could be the combination of those two things that made me give this place 5 stars. read more

this is the closest Beard Papa's to my apartment, so i guess it'll do if i absolutely can't wait for a cream puff (highly unlikely). after having a cream puff from the Beard Papa's at the Americana, i was expecting the same quality at this location. not so...not by a long shot. for starters, in the few times i've purchased cream puffs and eclairs here, i've NEVER had one made fresh! yes, they put the cream in when i ordered, but the cream puff and eclair shells were sitting out, and very cold. not the warm, fresh cream puffs and eclairs i've had at the Americana! no melty chocolate on top of the eclair -- instead a hard, too-thick layer of dark chocolate atop a cold cream puff shell. cash only is also annoying, but they aren't the only ones in the Marukai food court that does that. service leaves a lot to be desired. i could barely understand what the employee was saying from his grunts and mumbles. only after i asked him to repeat himself twice, did i get clear responses. even then, he was very gruff and unwelcoming. (this has happened to me on more than one occasion) all in all, a world of difference when i compare this location with the one at the Americana. cream puffs are still edible, and would even be good if i didn't have the Americana to compare. but since i've tried the same stuff at both places, this one is such a disappointment. judging from the rave reviews, maybe i've just visited at off times every time i've been? we'll see...but for now, there is a lot of room for improvement. read more

I have a confession! Once upon a time I was completely out of cash but I was craving these little puffs so badly that I actually drove to a bank (since they don't take card) and withdrew money for the sole purpose of indulging in the heavenly joy that is Beard Papa. The original cream is my favorite although I like strawberry too. When you can't choose between your favorites, why not have both? So remember kids! The original is the best by far. Just biting into it is perfect with its vanilla bean filling. It is the best. The shell is perfect. The cookie one also tasted really good, but the shell is really crumbly and it broke when i tried to rip a piece off. It is a treat to go here every time. read more

Beard Papa is my go-to cream puff in the area, and when I lived in the northeast, I would always stop at the one on Sawtelle. They sell mini or large ones, so you can decide. The cream resembles the traditional Japanese kind...not the ones filled with whip cream you find in the United States. I gotta mention though, there is a place called Angel Maid Bakery in Culver City that sells cream puffs that I like slightly better. If you need to bring dessert to a party, I think a bunch of the small cream puffs to replace the basic cookies, brownie bites, and cupcakes would for sure make for a very pleased crowd. read more

My son and I love the cream puffs here. We always get the original dozen. The place accepts cash only. They prepare the puffs in front of you by meticulously putting in the cream inside the baked pastries and sprinkling a little bit of powdered white sugar on top. Puffs tastes as great as it looks. Haven't found cream puffs better than theirs. The custard filling is just so delicious and goes perfectly with the pastry which is just crispy and puffy. It's such a beautiful thing to watch them fill the pastry with the perfect vanilla custard filling. And to top it off, they sprinkle it with powdered sugar. A small stand among other tiny eateries inside a Japanese market. Make sure you have a couple bucks of change on you because they take cash only. The cream puffs are about 2 bucks and actually a good size, I ate one of the matcha puffs and it filled me right up. I like how the cream is cool when you bite into it. I like their cream puffs. Some people don't like it because they're so light. But i like them a lot. I've also recently tried the strawberry. I think I like it better than the vanilla. They have eclairs too, which are pretty good. I've had better cream puffs from Angel Bakery on Centinella in Venice. The puffs are smaller, but that only means you can eat more. If you go to Beard Papa's on Sawtelle, you might have a hard time parking. Just tell the Valet guy yo'll be at Beard's for a couple of minutes, and he will let you park without charge. read more

Heaven on Earth pastries! We go out of our way for this place! Best on earth, I mean it! Bring cash, they don't take credit card. The location is a little weird, it is located inside of a large grocery store, I think it's a Japanese area. This shop is inside the Marukai market. I like their cream puffs. I heard of Bread Papa before but have never gone. The breads are fresher then I thought they would be. They put in the cream and dust with sugar after you order. I was sure they were already in the puff. There was also more cream inside than I thought here would be. Yet the cream didn't make the bread soggy,it was still firm with a little give. I now have to go to one of their main stores to see about their other flavors. read more

Now that its open here in LA I can finally gorge myself with the best tasting cream puffs I've ever had. Until I find a place that has better cream puffs this place is 5 stars. The cream puffs may not be worth a three hour wait like what happened when it first opened in New York, but they are definitely worth going out of your way a little bit and waiting fifteen minutes for other people to make up their minds. They're good in general, but when they're still a little warm in the bread and freshly powdered, watch out. You could find yourself eating more than one (though one is usually the perfect pastry amount.) They're really not THAT expensive in the world of fancy pastries-look at Sprinkles cupcakes and they are definitely NOT worth the wait that people go through for those. I've been out of state for a few years, and I came back remembering Beard Papa's amazing cream puffs. Looking at the recent reviews, I guess they have a new worker that doesn't make them as well as they should. Luckily for me when I passed by yesterday, I didn't have this problem. My personal favorite is their chocolate cream filled puff they sell on Thursdays and Fridays, and it was just as delicious as I remembered. The taste and consistency are absolutely orgasmic. Full of light, smooth, flavorful, and not overly sweet cream (huge plus for me because I can't handle most creams/custard). The regular puffs are like barely over $2-ish?
