Yep, they make a good puff. My friend & I split one of the regular and a strawberry. The regular to me was more creamy and much more custard-like. The strawberry one def had chunks of strawberries as well as you could see the seeds of the berries in the cream... but it was a bit too runny for me. A real treat these cream puffs are! And they aren't the teeny tiny soggy puffs you buy at the general super market. They're really addicting, and at a buck-seventy-five a pop they are a pricey obsession! Like chocolate? Splurge the extra 10 cents and get the eclair, you won't be disappointed. And on Friday's and Saturday's they have chocolate filling. Walk into the market and buy some chocolate milk, and ohhh boy, it's such a delightful snack! WOW! those cream puffs were amazing! an amazing treat after a delicious meal at hakata shinsengumi ramen! Today's special was the strawberry filling..sooo delicious, they fill the cream puff with the light strawberry filling in front of you! On top of that, we ordered the chocolate dipped cream puff... WOW! oh wait..already said that. OOPS...WOW! the fillings were so light but creamy and a delicious sweet snack that doesn't make you feel guilty after eating it. Beard Papa's is life!! I cannot believe I haven't reviewed them yet! Been going to this location since I was in high school! (I'm 26 now). And believe it or not, they have NOT changed one bit. My mom would often mistakenly call this place Papa Beard, which may be why I like it so much, it reminds me of her! Beard Papa is located on the right side with all of the other vendors in the Marukai Supermarket. Like many other Yelpers have mentioned, they offer many different flavored cream puffs, but not all at the same time. The cream puffs are made fresh with great ratios of filling and dough, and I don't believe too sweet. My favorites are the original and green tea flavor. They sell them in cool little yellow gift boxes, so they can be used as a unique little gift or potluck item if you'd like! read more

It's been a while since I had a cream puff. I love them but for some reason, I haven't had the time or had the chance to treat myself. I think my first experience was in Boston almost decade ago. Anyway, this place was a little sad. It's located within the Tokyo Central grocery store, which is kind of dead and a weird plaza in Gardena. Tokyo Central used to be a Marukai market that nobody went to and now it just sells toys and tchotchkes. Back to Beard Papa's. I ordered an Eclaire, vanilla, standard. He grabbed it from a refrigerator, it's already filled. The pastry itself was crispy, almost hard. Is it stale? The cream didn't taste like vanilla. It didn't have much taste, maybe vanilla pudding from the supermarket? It was pretty disappointing. I love eclaires and it only made me want to find a better place to erase the memory of this one. read more

Their cream puff reminds me of something I had as a child. Something fresh, something basic, something good. (Can't put a finger on it though). Couple of friends I know who had cream puffs at West LA area and Down Town LA have declared this location's tastes better (West LA's is the best they thought but unhappily admitted that this tiny place located inside a supermarket is better). the best cream puffs that are totally worth the price and the drive! Think about the flaky, but firm pastry shell that has a tiny bit of chew, and the fresh, hand-filled custard that is sweet but not too sweet, and thick but not too thick. Top it off with a little bit of powdered sugar and you're pretty much (unwillingly?) committed to finishing the whole thing by yourself=) The chocolate covered 'eclairs' which is pretty much the same thing but chocolate covered, are also delicious. If you like desserts, you NEED to try one. They're on par with a hot Krispy Kreme. This is one of the few times I would recommend seeking them out. I could polish off a box if my wife didn't stop me. Oh my god...the cream puffs...the eclairs...heaven, absolute heaven. A very nice lady, dear to my heart, introduced me to this place. I'd never had a cream puff so delicious. I fell in love instantly. I knew we'd bond for life. I'd come here every day if I could. I prefer mine without that chocolate business, because the chocolate takes over the cream puff IMO. I treated my sister to an eclair once, and she demanded I buy her two the next time (one of each)--how greedy! I love the way they pump your thingy for you when you order it. I guess I just don't have Beard Papa as much to notice if there's actually a difference between their different stores but this place was just as good as the ones I've had in other parts of Southern Cali as well as NYC. Have you ever had the best cream puff ever? No. You have not. Not until you try Beard Papa's cream puff. The cream on the inside is slightly sweet and has a really smooth consistency. The mid-crust has a good texture and the outer shell provides a crispy flake. It's all topped off with a wisp of sugar powder, which makes it the perfect cream puff. Double recommended! I love Beard Papas! I have had them in Japan before so when they started building them in the US I was so excited. Their cream puffs are definitely some of the best I've had. The inside is a really light vanilla custard (original) but you can also get different flavors that they have every now and then (green tea, coffee, strawberry, etc). Original is definitely my favorite, though. I also especially really like their eclair cream puffs (which just has hardened chocolate on top of the choux pastry). These cream puffs are also pretty large. This location is inside of the Marukai Pacific Square shopping center so parking is easy and you can just walk inside the market and it's in the food court area. I just wish it wasn't cash only. :/ read more

Maybe i shouldn't generalize based on ONE cream-puff, but I was determined to try both Beard Papa's and this other place on Lomita to see which one has the better cream puffs. Sorry to say, but Beard Papa's lost. Sure it was nice when the cream dripped down my fingers, but it didn't have that great taste, and the dough itself wasn't that great. I think it lacked a little bit of consistency. Don't get me wrong... Beard Papa's is good... but I've eaten better. 3 stars for being inside Marukai (in spite of lacking its own sense of individuality), good creme-puffs, and nice dripping down gustard. read more

Dayam these cream filled bastards! Why do you have to be so frickin' good and so bad for my health, huh!? Tell me, why... I'm pretty sure that i'm not going to say anything that hasn't already been said but this Beard Papa is located in the Marukai Supermarket and it's always the same dude working each time i go. They have different flavors of cream (green tea, strawberry, caramel, mocha and chocolate) depending on the day (original is available everyday). So far i've had the chocolate and the original and they are both good. The eclair is pretty good too, but the chocolate on the eclair can be a bit too excessive (at least for me). For a cream puff, these suckers a pretty darn big and heavy. It always seems to surprise me how these puffs can hold so much cream in them and after the first bite, be careful cause it can get pretty messy with all that cream oozing out. I usually like to take them home and warm them up for a couple of seconds in the microwave, but they are good either way. Rich creamy goodness in the palm of you hand, YUM! read more

Great cream puffs, and I also like the eclairs (how can anything topped in chocolate be bad?). Use caution when eating - take your first bite at the hole where they fill it, unless you like the filling squirting out. I still like the original filling the best, chocolate second, but the "Special Flavor" fillings can be a nice changeup if you're a regular. The atmosphere of eating in Marukai is the only thing that keeps this location from being a 5 star. Honestly, I can make better pâte à choux. (try me). Every time I come here and get a box, the shell tastes very stale. Is that the flavor? The cream..well, the original is ok with the vanilla bean, but the others...green tea and that strawberry one...gross! I tell my self that I should just make it myself instead of buy from this company, but it's a hassle to make the shell and the custard. Maybe I should build my own empire of pâte à choux. Totally different than this franchise/company but sell the same product. I will be back, but only cuz I have the craving for one and I don't have time to make one myself. This is a review for just the chocolate covered eclair with regular filling. It was a really good pastry, the shell was exactly what it should be, sort of stiff but with just enough give so as not to feel stale. The filling is extremely tasty, like a very cold, sweet vanilla custard. Also they give you a TON of filling, I mean to the point of it almost exploding when you take a bite. Let that be a word of caution, be careful when you eat this if you don't want to stain your clothes. A cheap, tasty pastry in the middle of a cool market...what's not to like? read more

This place is a gem. Definitely my go to spot for a delicious cream puff. I have had the chocolate covered shell and the plain, filled with vanilla or green tea cream. My favorite is plain with green tea. I'm picky about desserts, they have to be fresh and Beard Papa hasn't disappointed me yet. Going in the Marukai is also a great way to waste time in Gardena. I love to wander the aisles and absorb all the randomness. What an inspiring selection of miso soup bases and other Japanese cooking items. The beauty product packaging is more aesthetically pleasing than anything found in Target. What a wide selection of tiny razors, and tape to hold the eyelid open wider. Always a good time. read more
