I don't often write bad reviews but this was very upsetting to hear. Writing this on behalf of my SO since he doesn't have a yelp account. This happened on 9/7 around 12:45PM. It was his first time going to Beard Papa because there is a Persona collab currently going on. Purchased a 4 pack of the collab cream puffs from an older male employee working there. There were communication issues because the worker couldn't understand the simple order. Eventually my SO got his order, paid and left. He brought them home to eat, took one bite of the cream puff (Joker themed strawberry cheesecake-filled cream puff) only to find the filling was just plain vanilla. Understandably upset because this wasn't what he paid for, he went back to get replacements because now we can't trust that the others have the correct filling either. Unfortunately, there didn't seem to be any other employees/management present so my SO had to confront this same male employee. No apologies or anything for the mistake. Instead he kept repeatedly doubling down about how he wasn't told that my SO wanted something different. The onus should NOT be on the customer to just KNOW that the fillings can be changed. Especially if it's their first time visiting. Nor does it make sense that the DEFAULT filling for the collab pastries should be anything other than advertised. My SO had to raise his voice and demand replacements, and this employee threw a tantrum by rolling his eyes and tossing the old ones with an attitude. You don't belong in customer service if you can't handle simple orders and taking accountability. He seriously needs to be retrained/disciplined/fired. SOMETHING. This man was awful and rude and this is absolutely unacceptable behavior. read more

We were in the area when I thought of stopping in for dessert. Beard Papa is the only place open late in the food court of Tokyo Central. They are open 10am to 8pm, daily. I ordered an original with vanilla filling. The pricing has remained the same but the size of the puff appears to be smaller. They used to be presented in a cardboard food "boat," like the ones used for French fries. Now the cream puffs are served in a larger size cupcake liner. Hmmmm. Beard Papa's in Gardena is inside Tokyo Central, and you'll find it as you walk in on the right. It's a tiny little bakery corner with fresh cream puffs made in-house, which is awesome. They do have some really good cream puff flavors, the vanilla cream is my go-to, and my kids love the chocolate. The customer service needs some work. Every single time I've been there, it kind of feels like the staff is just not thrilled to help, and that vibe definitely takes away from the experience. I keep coming back because the cream puffs are delicious, but I really wish they'd at least crack a smile or make you feel a bit more welcome. I did see a fly on a cream puff once, and while they did toss it out after I pointed it out, it'd be great if they covered the pastries so that doesn't happen. For the ambiance, as it's located within Tokyo Central, it shares its locations with many other restaurants packed together. The food court itself offers seats but it's nothing fancy or special. This place is located in the Tokyo Central food court area. I liked the concept of ordering cream puffs like donuts because I love cream puffs and have never seen anything like this place. I got the original and chocolate cream puff shell with vanilla filling. I went pretty late in the day so I didn't expect anything to be fresh. I will say I'm sure they taste even better fresh. The original puff that I tried was nice! It tasted a bit different compared to a couple of years ago but overall it tasted fine. But then I tried the chocolate cream puffs and they tasted moldy..? I checked the puff for any exterior signs of mold but I couldn't find any thankfully, but it still tasted like mold. I even quadrupled checked to be sure. Went with one my my favorite flavors instead of 5 like I wanted. Green tea with green tea filling. The outside green tea flavor was very sweet and thick on the cream puff. Bit into the inside to taste the cream, and it was not sweet like the outside. It paired perfectly and cut the sweetness of the outside. The bottom of the cream puff was really crunchy and hard. They were $4 each which I thought was a little overpriced, considering that many bakery goods can be under $3 each. I had to order at least 2 because minimum purchase of $5 to accept card. Quality wise, I'd say it's really good! The chocolate and matcha coatings are definitely not fake, they put a big layer so you can enjoy the flavors. This was my first work place and it was a very clean and chill place. The ingredients are pretty fresh and they trash old bread unless you come early in the morning (it might be bread from the night before). They use real vanilla beans and clean almost everything when it is slow. I visited a couple of weeks ago and it was just as yummy as I remember. My favorite thing is the mini eclairs with vanilla filling. It's not the same as getting one giant eclair. The mini ones make it a fun bite in your mouth experience every time and since they pump the filling fresh in front of your eyes, you are never going to get soggy bread. I like that they now have the option for card payments and tip and such a diverse selection of drinks and other types of eclairs. It wasn't this fancy when I used to work there. The cream puff shells are already made and you just pick which one you want and what flavor filling you want and they will make it for you. My friend chose the honey butter puff with the original custard filling. I chose the rainbow sprinkles with matcha custard. It was really tasty and I loved the matcha custard because it wasn't too sweet and had a lil bitterness that matcha has. The only problem with these puffs is they are only great to eat immediately. These don't taste good if they sitting too long. So for me I can only eat 1 even though I want to eat all the flavors. read more
