Really good cream puffs, especially for a small location and kind of slow business. I was worried that the cream puffs wouldn't be fresh because it was relatively empty today but I WAS WRONG. The puff was extremely fluffy with just the right amount of crunch. It was filled right in front of me and wasn't soggy when I ate it 20 min later. It tastes exactly like any other Beard Papa's cream puff I've had before, which in the case of chain stores is a good thing. The worker used proper sanitation techniques, like washing hands, using plastic gloves, no cross contamination, etc. I was very impressed. read more

I'm still comparing BP's cream puffs from Shirokiya (Ala Moana Center Honolulu) to the ones I've been sampling here and again, these just do not compare. The chocolate is kinda like that coating on a Tasty Freeze, except triple the thickness. It's really heavenly. Be very careful. You can get addicted. This is bakery crack, man. They have different flavor toppings every day, so make a mental note to go on the days your favorites are being served and hoard them like crazy! This location closes rather early.. I'm not big on sweets or desserts (I know, what's wrong with me?)... But these cream puffs! Wow... I got a single coffee-flavored one (I figured it wouldn't be as sweet). It was mocha-licious. Best cream puffs in my opinion, especially since this is all they make! I know there are other bakeries that offer cream puffs, which are also quite good, but I love that Beard Papa only specializes in cream puffs. Because of this they offer a variety of flavors from original, chocolate, strawberry, and green tea! My personal favorites are the original and green tea....SOOO GOOOD!!! I know they are a bit on the pricey end, but if you order in pairs of 6, you get a small discount. *Usually I purchase the puffs for events, parties or as gifts, so I always call ahead to order and the owner will have them prepared for you in advance to pick up! read more

I can never refuse cream puffs... The original is great on its own, but the eclair... Damn! I love the chocolate on top with vanilla/strawberry filling. This review is strictly for this location only!! I've had Beard Papa at several of the other locations and they have all been great. I came to this specific location on a Monday afternoon, there was only one man working. He was in the back washing bowls or something. I stood at the front patiently waiting, thinking he saw me. However, after about 2-3 minutes I realized he probably didn't and called out a "hello?"....nothing. I said it a little louder....nothing. I said it louder and waved my hands around to get his attention. He finally noticed me (it had maybe been 10 minutes at this point). I got a dozen of original. I get home and not a single one tasted like it was fresh. The shell tasted incredibly stale. I don't think I would ever come back to this location again. read more

Located inside the Marukai Japanese market, I once got there 2 minutes before the shop closed and bought off the last bag the manager of the shop was probably taking home to his sick child. I remember looking for this particular location and not being able to find it because I didn't know it was located INSIDE the Marukai. Then over the weekend, we were across the street at Spoon House for dinner and decided to do some light grocery shopping. Lo and behold, there was the Beard Papa's!! Like finding money in your coat pocket!! I showed some restraint and only ordered one for myself. The boyfriend got one each of the regular and the eclair. I had mine that night then asked for one of his the next night. Ooops! They were so good, how could I eat just one!? I think what makes Beard Papa's puff stand out is the creamy goodness on the inside. It's just the right consistency of creaminess (not to thick, not to runny); it's not too sweet and I love the fresh taste of vanilla. Lucky for me, we went to have dinner in Gardena last night with the boyfriend's family so we were able to stop by again to get more. WORST BEARD PAPA!!!!!!!!! Not sure how they operate this store though. The girl/lady works on weekends is the WORST server we ever seen. She took 30~40 minutes to take care of 1 person's order (who only ordered 1.5 dozen,,and we were next) and finally we got our 4 pcs orders. YUM! I didn't know what the big deal was until I tried them. The crispy pastry puff is the best part of Beard Papa's Cream Puffs. These pastries come filled with a light custard like filling, not like the whipped cream filling that you might have tried in other cream puffs. The chubster that I am, I had to try all three flavors available that day (vanilla, chocolate, and green tea). The winner was Vanilla! Chocolate was a little strong and Green Tea was too strong. I ate my first Beard Papa cream puff in Japan and was hooked. When they arrived in Gardena I was thrilled. These cream puffs taste great! I've given them to friends and family and all of them loved them. My office building manager just told me she sought out Beard Papa to give her relative that was visiting from Italy! I love Beard Papa... The original flavor will always be my favorite. Tried the green tea filling, not as exciting, but is light. The outside breading is slightly crispy when fresh. If you're not looking for it, you'll miss this Beard Papa location by a mile because it's located inside the Marukai Supermarket. The market itself sells your typical Asian fare and also houses a couple food stands in their small food court. We only go here for the cream puffs because they're amazingly yummy. They're huge, light, not too sweet and freshly baked every day. You simply cannot go wrong. The prices are decent too. I highly suggest going early because they sell out of certain flavors. It's really small but hard to miss. Everything looks clean and the service was quick and courteous. Although, when we first got to the stand there was no one there so we left and came back later. My co-worker and I went on a mission to seek out this location of Beard Papa's after lunch one day, and it almost turned into mission impossible--we drove all up and down Redondo Beach Blvd but kept missing the shopping center where Beard Papa's is located (it's across from Spoon House), and then once we found the shopping center, we wandered all over the shopping center looking for the shop until a kind clerk in a video store told us it was inside the Marukai Market. Oops. Anyway, we finally found the place and got some cream puffs at last. They were good, but I wouldn't really go out of my way for them again. I thought the pastry was so-so and the custard filling was fairly good, but nothing to write home about, IMO. OK, I know that Beard Papa doesn't need another review, but I love the regular cream puffs so much that I just had to give it some props. They are sooooo freakin' good. I've tried the eclair version (it is the regular version topped off with chocolate) and I thought that the chocolate detracted from the experience (This coming from a guy who loves chocolate!!!). I've heard several people complain about the cream puffs being messy to eat. I don't get it. I've never made a mess eating it. I love it when people focus on one thing, and do it right. It's the same quality I seek in a woman, I suppose. Not that their cream puffs are out of this world -- no -- but where can I find cream puffs that are warm both inside and outside. Most bakeries make these in the morning and they sit on the shelves for hours, if not a few days, often in the refrigerator. Not here. The dough are created, almost right off the oven, and cream is inserted as they are served. These things are expensive for what they are (you can buy a prepackaged cheap version in the grocery store for 1/4 of the price), but hey, it's not like you are going to have these every day. There are many kinds of filling -- again like women -- and I don't discriminate so I love them all. They are all wonderful in their own way. It's a great gift to bring to a party, if you can only hold off eating one in the car before you get there. read more

It's pretty good, but not as good as Patisserie Chantilly or Cream Pan. Those are truly amazing Japanese bakeries.

If you like cream puffs, you have to go to a beard Papa store. The vanilla custard is so made with real vanilla; I could drink the filling. I kind of preferred the smaller creampuffs over the larger ones. And be careful when you take your first bite. Know where the filling hole is where they injected the filling. Recommend taking your first bite at that location otherwise you're in danger of losing all that good filling! read more
