The food is AWESOME!!! I can not describe how good the food was. The beef brisket is to die for and so are the ribs! My mom and I went here based on previous reviews and all I can say is if you're reading this review you pretty much have to come here. This place is well with any detour you may need to take to get here. (Ours was about 25 miles) The people are so friendly and wonderful to talk with. A favorite road find. Not far off I-20 and worth the reprieve from the hot Texas pavement. Surrounded by houses, grassy surroundings. Brisket was incredible as was the squash and the greens. Herbert White was a joy to meet, and he knows how to cook barbecue! The ribs were excellent with a superb dry rub that needed no other sauce. The sides were made from scratch, and where else can you get old fashioned hot water cornbread?! I was hungry and on the road. I searched the internet and found BBQ Express. A wise man once told me if you don't see smoke it ant BBQ and we followed the smoke through a neighborhood where my GPS left off. The owner was there and he treated us like regulars. We got a BBQ brisket sandwich/chips/can drink and the brisket plate/can drink. The BBQ brisket sandwich was great and I would get it for myself next time. I just discovered this barbecue/soul food gem. Everything was outstanding. I went with a group of 5 and we sampled ribs, brisket, chicken, hot links, greens, beans, potato salad, deviled eggs, étouffée, peach cobbler, egg custard pie AND brownies. They have a steam table during the week with whatever soul food they feel like cooking. The owner even took us to the back to show us his smoker. I would have to say this is the most amazing BBQ I've ever had! Every bite was made and cooked with love and care and was just the most well prepared BBQ I've ever tasted. Everything there tasted so good. Its a bit off the beaten path, so you do have to look for it but it is WORTH IT. If you are in the area actively go find BBQ Express, you will NOT regret it. The service was very nice, the staff came out to give us food, chat with us and ask us how we were doing and just overall friendly atmosphere and staff. Outstanding Que! I'm from Los Angeles and there is no food like this out here...and I've tried a number of them. My family had; Ribs, Beef Brisket, & Chicken. All the meats were tender and not dry or over cooked. The sauce was unbelievably tasty. We tried all the sides and those were very good as well. To finish our meal off, we had the Peach Cobbler. It was soooo good. It wasn't overly sweet as most cobblers tend to be. The place is clean and air conditioned. No need to mention the hospitality...you're in the south baby :-) We can't wait to get back to Marshall, Tx to get some of these good eats. read more

Herbert knows how to barbecue. I've sought out every BBQ joint in Marshall - even the hole-in-the-walls only open on weekends - and Herbert's is hands-down the best. Not only does it beat the tar out of Bodacious, the Brown Pig, Ezells, and the rest - Herbert's brisket is routinely better than the Texas Monthly-listed Riverport BBQ up the road in Jefferson. Herbert doesn't have the consistency of a really great joint - you can count on whatever you get to be really good, but can never predict when it'll be jaw-droppingly amazing. If you get a three meat plate, though, at least two of them will usually be amazing. I usually go for brisket, ribs, and hot links, though he makes a great sausage and chicken, too. Use the spicy sauce. Other reviewers are right that the customer service is top-notch, too. Herbert will treat you right and, if you want, tell you his whole fascinating life story. Stop by on recommendations off of yelp. It's a little off the main road but worth the trip. We ordered links, rib sandwich and boudin. Very friendly establishment. Not impressed. Not as bad as Dickey's BBQ but I won't be returning. When I placed my order for boudain, the cook warmed it up in the microwave. I've never been to a BBQ joint and ordered meat and they warm it up in a microwave. When I got it, it was still lukewarm. The potato salad had NO flavor whatsoever. Tasted like eating plain mashed potatoes with no seasoning on them. The deviled eggs were good. The cook was friendly. Was going to get a piece of cake but they were all burned black on the bottom. The barbecue sauce tastes very tomatoey, kind of more like a spicy ketchup. The sliced bread (Sunbeam) and the two deviled eggs were the only good part about this $12 meal. The microwaved, lukewarm boudain wasn't terrible but it wasn't great. There was a lot of it but I threw it away because it wasn't hot and it tasted very smokey, like lighter fluid almost. Marshall, Texas, as far as I know, isn't really famous for too much. This is a shame, because they should be famous for the BBQ Express. I'm a business traveler and one of my colleagues who'd been to Marshall recommended the BBQ Express to me. I'm glad they did! I can safely say they have some of the best BBQ in Texas. I ordered the rib sandwich, pinto beans, and cornbread; portion size was nice. The ribs were smoked to perfection, and the delicious sauce doesn't taste like a store-bought concoction. Besides the outstanding food, the staff was extremely friendly and their enthusiasm for their own food adds to the great dining experience. I had a friend get me a chopped beef plate from there and the majority of it was fat, not just one piece, it was covered. I called and spoke with the owner and he had the audacity to tell me I should have picked it up myself instead of sending someone. He then proceeded to tell me that I should have said trim the fat if I didn't want any fat. I replied my stating any other BBQ place I eat from, I don't have to request that. His comment was that maybe I should just go to those places and not come back. All he had to do was look at the meat and he could have seen for himself there was a lot of fat-everyone I showed agreed it had a lot. I was just wanting another plate because the flavor was decently good, but his attitude towards me has ruined any chance of me, my family, and co-workers from eating there again.
