Having talked to multiple GCs to get quotes, it was clear Nathan had a very honest and reasonable approach. He also was happy to show his previous work as an example. It's also a great sign that he has a good relationship with his past client, and I can see why, now being one of them. Even after the project had mostly finished, Nathan was still helping to touch up any minor issues the previous client had. This amount of service really convinced me Nathan was the right person to go with. Nathan worked with me diligently throughout the planning phase, addressing any hiccups. He is also great at handling inspections and it was completely hands-off from me, which gave me great peace of mind. During construction, his team worked quickly, efficiently, and with high quality. He and the foreman had a great understanding of construction techniques and would explain in detail exactly what we needed to do. This gave me a great understanding of what exactly was going on in my house and give me confidence in the construction quality. Nathan was flexible with schedule. We were able to meet almost every week during the critical times and every other week otherwise to go over updates and scope of work. When needing to hit critical deadlines, Nathan and his team delivered. When decision points came up, we would go over options and he would give his advice. We were always able to quickly come to a decision. When issues came up during the build that required going a more expensive than expected route, Nathan often quietly addressed them without adding an extra charges. While I tried my best to avoid changes in scope, they inevitably come up. Some of these things Nathan covered for me. For everything else we were always able to find a reasonable path forward. When I pointed out small quality issues, Nathan didn't hesitate to get them addressed. The attention to detail is great - we acclimated the hardwood, beautifully mitered waterfall edges, installed clean under cabinet lighting, got the walls down super smooth and touched up all imperfections, custom arches were clean and perfectly curved, trims and baseboards were seamless - the list goes on. He also has a great network of skilled laborers and suppliers that all help reduce the cost a little and ensure expert quality. While the overall schedule did push out a bit (which seems inevitable in construction), the end result was worth the wait and I'm overall very happy with the quality of work and finishes. I think the best thing with Nathan is that it makes the stressful process of home renovation as stress-free as possible, and you can be rest assured he will get you across the finish line with a result that you will be happy with.

I'd like to begin by saying that we had hired Nathan as project manager once before to remodel our…read moremaster bathroom. Because we were so happy with the entire process of that job, we wanted him to handle our kitchen remodel as well. The kitchen turned out great and we are very happy with the result but there were a few problems along the way. Ours was a pretty straightforward remodel, we wanted to paint our kitchen cabinets which were original to the home built in 1969, place new porcelain countertops with a waterfall at two ends, replace the vinyl flooring with porcelain planks, and repaint the walls and ceiling. Our kitchen is a rather small galley type kitchen, so the project wasn't huge, and was expected to be completed within 5-6 weeks. Things got off to a slow start, the installation of the floor took 5 days, and didn't include the grouting which was accomplished by a different employee on a separate day, so it actually took 6 days. The installer did a nice job, but was exceedingly slow. The flooring was covered with construction paper to protect it before the grout had been cleaned off, so when it did come time to clean it, the grout had completely dried, and was difficult to remove, and took an additional full day to complete. It was estimated that 3 slabs of porcelain would be needed for the counters, but we wanted to buy an extra slab because the veining on the porcelain we had selected was complex, and we wanted the sections to flow as perfectly as possible. After the countertops were installed, which turned out amazingly well, a crack developed in one section that ran from the front of the counter all the way to the wall. Nathan was great about the whole thing and agreed to obtain another slab in order to replace it, which he did. Almost immediately, the replaced section developed a crack in exactly the same spot as the first. It was at this point that it was realized that our counters weren't perfectly flat and level, nor were they sufficiently rigid, which is a must for porcelain slabs as they are somewhat fragile. After some adjustments which included the addition of an underlayer of Hardie board and some reinforcement of the counters structure to increase the rigidity, a 3rd section was placed. The matching of the veining was not as perfect as the first installation. This was disappointing, but we would have accepted that, however, because the height of the counter had been raised due to the installation of the Hardie board underneath, the waterfall end was no longer long enough to reach the floor. Without consulting us, the fabricator spliced on a narrow strip at the floor level which did not match the veining at all and noticeably stood out. I messaged Nathan right away, and he agreed that this was not an acceptable solution, and agreed to obtain even more counter material to replace the waterfall section. At this point I was becoming slightly annoyed and asked that two slabs be obtained so that the entire section of countertop, the waterfall as well as the next section which adjoined the piece that had cracked twice could once again be matched to the level that the original installation had obtained, and without hesitation, Nathan agreed, and much to his credit, and the craftsmanship of the fabricator, the 4th attempt came out beautifully, and we are delighted with the way it now looks. The project ended up taking a little more than 9 weeks instead of 6, however, because the installation took longer than expected, we had to halt progress for 4 days for a previously planned vacation, and an additional 2 days when we had another pressing matter to attend to that was originally scheduled to be beyond the expected completion date, so that six days was on us but only necessary because the project ran longer than anticipated. I was going to rate the job as 4 stars because of the problems with the porcelain installation, but because Nathan was so understanding and easy to work with, and went the extra mile to ensure a quality job in the end, we decided to give True Builders the full 5 stars. To sum up, we are delighted with our new kitchen, but we think that a lot of the delay and frustration could have been avoided if someone had checked to ensure that our cabinets were suitable for the installation of porcelain slabs prior to the actual installation. Despite that, the work was completed to our satisfaction, and Nathan was terrific throughout the entire process, we couldn't be happier with the end result.

Originally, the remodel was going to affect less than half of the house, but as the remodel progressed, we were very happy with the work and this encouraged us to expand the scope and budget of our remodel to include the entire house, and even the exterior. Roberto is friendly, honest, hardworking, diligent, and holds himself and his team to high-quality standards. We are proud to show our remodeled house to our friends. Everyone, including multiple friends who work in the construction and remodeling industry, remarks that the attention to detail by Roberto and his subcontractors is excellent. SCOPE This section of this review is to comment on the scope of work that REF Builders took on for our remodel. It was not a small job. REF Builders worked with our architect's design to relocate our kitchen to an entirely different space. This required moving electrical, plumbing, HVAC ducting, and gas lines. One previous double door in the new kitchen area was converted to a window, and another double door was filled in and the exterior wall re-stucco'd to match. Roberto's team installed highly-unique custom kitchen cabinets, all-new appliances, a new island, and countertops with precision. The remodel also included conversion of the former kitchen space into a new family room, and remodeling of 4 bathrooms, 4 bedrooms (out of 5), and conversion of a living room to an office space. His plumber installed a new tankless water heater with recirculation system. His electrician re-routed multiple electrical circuits to a Tesla PowerWall battery circuit-breaker. His team installed 14 doors with all-new door trim (including front and back doors), 2 sliding barn-doors, 2 windows, and cut new window screens for all windows. They also built a new staircase from the 1st to 2nd floor. REF Builders also installed new flooring throughout both floors of the house (including installation of new subflooring to fix termite-damaged wood and use of self-leveling concrete to flatten the floors to resolve uneven settling), new floor trim and crown moulding, new drywall throughout half of the house, painted the entire interior of the house (all rooms), and applied new stucco, painted the entire exterior, repaired face-up boards below the gutters, and installed new window trim on the entire exterior of the house and built a new concrete landing/stairs for the back door. They also installed all-new insulation throughout the walls and ceiling areas, and replaced the ceiling on the first floor and upstairs hallway and installed all-new recessed lighting, ceiling fan, and exhaust fans. They built an enclosed laundry which involved installation of new lighting, exhaust fan, and moving electrical. The toughest part of the project was resolution of major ceiling cracks due to settling of the house. Instead of just patching the cracks, a structural engineer was consulted and the sides of the house shored up to address the root-cause of the settling/cracking, then major structural work to reinforce the upper middle parts of the house, and finally the cosmetic patching by replacing the entire affected ceiling. Roberto handled all necessary permits, and inspections with the City. QUALITY OF WORK The quality of work was excellent throughout all of the diverse areas and disciplines of construction. Roberto personally inspected work as it progressed and in some cases, made his subcontractors "re-do" work that was not to his satisfaction. He would have them tear apart work that he considered inadequate and not only have them re-do the work, but in some cases he paid for the materials that were necessary to re-do the work (such as replacement tiles). When we presented him with a "punch list" after each phase of the remodel, he was very conscientious about taking care of each item to our satisfaction. His employees are hardworking, detail-oriented, and very meticulous about the quality of their work. They never rushed anything they did - it was evident that they had the discipline to always do their work correctly and precisely, rather than quickly but sloppy. They often stayed late, sometimes into the late hours of the evening. His subcontractors for electrical, plumbing, and especially painting delivered top-notch quality. We would often ask questions or for special modifications and they were always eager to accommodate our requests. PRICING AND BUSINESS PRACTICES Quotes (estimates) were always clear, and invoiced amounts always matched exactly. There were never any surprises. If we requested changes, Roberto would provide us with pricing for the "change order" and the eventual invoicing reflected that same amount. Roberto never exhibited a "nickel and dime" mentality. We remodelled everything - it very was close to a complete tear down. I would highly recommend REF based on our experience. Their quote came in reasonably priced. Roberto, his crew and sub-contractors were honest, transparent, flexible, hard working, and perfectionists. They went above and beyond to work around our need to accommodate our need to stay in the house, while delivering quality work on time. Roberto himself is a perfectionist, noticing imperfections we didn't even see, and fixing them himself. He treats his work as a craft and takes pride in it. His sub-contractors are the same, with his painter especially, as well as his electrical and plumbing guys all being exceptional. Frequently surfacing suggestions to improve upon original lighting and plumbing plans when they saw the architects plan wouldn't work as well. They really want to get it right for the customer. When unforseen work came up (e.g. moving the sewer line) he did his best to make sure he priced the additional work, accounting for our budget, frequently offering to cover labor if we wanted to cover material for small improvements he saw he could make. A great example: We weren't planning to replace existing siding and just have new siding match. However after demo, there was only a small section of old-siding left. He offered to replace that last chunk, without charging labor, if we covered the material, so we were set for the next many years. The best example of his customer-centric attitude: The architect we used messed up the positioning (off by many feet) of a 700lb 60ft vaulted ceiling beam in their plans. We noticed this after Roberto and his crew had already installed it, and started to build roofing on top of it. The architect suggested we would have to pay for their mistake to re-do the plan. Roberto stepped in feeling this wasn't fair to us, took on the cost of tearing it down again, and moving it to a new position to meet structural needs, while making it aesthetically pleasing (some of the photos here, are of that beam). This customer-focused attitude shows up in all aspects of the project. Roberto delivered the project on time, it looks fantastic, and he also helped us work around PG&E delays. I'd highly recommend considering Roberto and REF for your construction needs - whether complex or simple. They're customer-centric perfectionists.
