I came here with my family for lunch on a weekday and we were able to get a table easily. It's very spacious inside but it looks like they have limited tables. It could just be because it was too early to open all the tables. We ordered beef with green beans, moo goo gai pan (mushroom and chicken), filet/ braised fish with tofu, eggplant with chicken and salt fish, and fried squid as part of the lunch special. The mushroom and chicken is not listed on the menu but is available upon request. My favorite was the fish with tofu. The menu states "with bean curd," but I prefer tofu and they were able to make the substitute. They initially misheard our order and gave us the fried squid with salt and pepper but the waitress was so nice and even offered to replace it. We didn't mind though so we kept the fried squid, which was a good thing because it ended up being my family's favorite dish. I would come back here just for the wonderful service and variety of food. The waitress was very attentive without being overbearing. This place might have replaced their previous chef. I came on NYE and ordered sweet and sour spare ribs and Chinese flower and yellow chives stir fry. The spare ribs were just bones. It had no meat whatsoever. They looked like trims or left overs. The sauce was good though. The stir fry was bathed in oil and it was very salty. The flower chives were soo old. Totally inedible and there was no yellow chives. They were just in the picture and name. The food gave me acid reflux. After an eventful ordering process, she brought out the wrong dish, and insisted a steamed chicken is "CRISPY" - after we told her this is not the house crispy chicken we ordered, she yelled at us again saying that was what we ordered and the steamed chicken is their house crispy chicken and it is "CRISPY". I guess she really thinks that we are all blind. We had to speak with the manager to get rid of this crazy B and get a replacement of the dish that we actually ordered. They probably picked the oldest Chinese broccoli they can find on the market - it was so bitter and not even possible to chew! We came here on Chinese New Year for dinner. Wow, talk about price gouging! I understand it's Chinese New Year and they charge more but at least they should not skimp on the food. The lobsters were $48 for 2. A little high but we ordered it, with the understanding that the price spikes during he holiday. However, the lobsters had no meat at all. The shells were empty. The pieces that had anything were the 2 tails. Claws had empty shells and so did everything else. So we were basically given 2 lobster tails from that dish. The fish flounder also had no meat. It was all bones and fried skin. We did not ask them to fry it but it came out fried so the only thing I ate from that dish was fried skin. They had a special dish , fried pumpkin and that was very good. Should have known there was going to be problems when we tried to order. Explicitly stated we wanted the crispy chicken, and a few other dishes. Two the waitress said would take about 30 minutes which is fine as it is normal for that dish. In the meantime two other larger tables were seated and they started getting food served before us. First dish came out about 40 minutes later which should have taken 10 at most. Next a veggie dish came which was terrible. Finally the chicken appeared and was NOT what we ordered and when we explained to her it was incorrect, she argued with us. Last dish arrived probably an hour later. Reminded them for our rice that was supposed to come with the first two dishes and never arrived until I requested they pack everything to go. The owner refused to allow us to be seated! We entered the restaurant at approximately 2:15 PM on 1/13. ALL tables but one were totally empty-there were 4 seated at the rear table. We were told you need a reservation. We told him we had eaten there just three weeks ago at lunchtime with no difficulty. He refused to seat us insisting, even though there was plenty of seating and he admitted there were no large parties on their way, that you must make a reservation. I asked him if we went ouside & called to make a reservation would he seat us & got no answer. When we told him he'd never see us again & that we'd post our experience online he said "I don't care"-I can only hope the guy is crazy and didn't deny my wife & I seating because we were non-Asian. read more

A family style restaurant that my family and I LOVE coming for delicious and authentic Chinese food. Trust me, it never disappoints! They serve delectable soup and offer a variety of options. All the dishes we ordered exceeded expectations. Came recently for my Mom's birthday and the workers all sang Happy Birthday to her while bringing out the Chinese Birthday Buns. We were going there for small family party, I pay the check immediately right after I got the check, but I think that is too pricy, so I take a picture of the check, I add it up with my calculator then find out the total was not right, try to talk to him and he seems impatient, and don't even feel bad or apologize for the wrong price, by the way, they charge $140 for a small(not more than 1.5Lb) see bass and $75 for two Lbs of baby live shrimp which $12.99/Lb in the retail supermarket. That is so unreasonable price. Will never ever go back again. I was previously under the impression that if I wanted a nice family meal in Bay Parkway, Joy K's would have been the only choice around. THIS IS NOT THE CASE. Thank the Chinese restaurant lords ! Bay Parkway Cafe, not really a cafe, serves restaurant styled dishes and take out. Ba-boom. And guess what ? The food is so much better. Hmrpgaghweaough. That's the sound I make when eating out delicious dinner an avenue away from my house. Weirdly enough, of both the times I've eaten dinner here-- it's relatively empty. There's never been a bustling crowd like at Joy K's, where you actually have to wait around for a table. Nope. The lack of people dining here was a bit of a turn off at first (to my skeptical mother, anyways), but we sat down anyways. There are two owners of the restaurant. One man and a lady. The man took our order and was awfully nice. He gave us all the insiders-- on what was fresh and what wasn't, recommending us dishes. Our dishes came pretty fast-- efficient kitchen, I guess. Of both times I've been here, I've had the: Lobster with Ginger & Scallion- Standard lobster. Feels like they gave us more than two lobsters, but may have just been large ones. Squid with Salt & Pepper- Delicious! Crispy, with the pleasant...err-- bounciness that perfectly cooked squid yields. The downside is that it's way too salty. This stuff is potent! Crispy Chicken with Fried Garlic Sauce- FAVORITE THING ON THE MENU. I'm not sure if this is what it's called, but the skin on the chicken is crunchy and the meat is moist-- EVEN the white parts. Yum. The garlic is perfectly fried and it's just so savory and salty. I want to slather it over everything. Everything. Even a boot is okay. Steamed Live Fish- Different types of fish are recommended depending on what they have in stock. I don't know how the chef does it, but even with the bigger, more fishier tasting fishes, he still makes it taste really "clear" and sweet. It flakes off into hearty chunks in all the right places...! Bonus is that the sauce drizzled over the fish isn't as oily as other restaurant extablishments. As in, there's more sauce than oil ! Sauteed Watercress with bean curd paste- Yum! Their choy dishes are never really oily, but it's still super yummy. Perfectly cooked with a nice fuu-yuu flavor. Sliced Pork Belly & preserved vegetables- Ugh. Second favorite. This stuff is so so so fattening-- you can see the layers of fat and lean meat quivering as the waiter sets it down, still sizzling and steaming. It's saucy. It's salty and sweet (thanks to the preserved vegetables) and there's a whole bed of lettuce underneath to sop up all this goodness. Pair it with a bowl of rice, and you've got heaven. HEAVEN. They usually offer a complementary soup that is served at the beginning of the meal along with a small dish of peanuts. Slices of oranges finish up your meal. You can't get better than this. It's the classic Chinese restaurant with your normal freakishly large menu (with a great, great chef who knows what he/she's doing) in not so classic decor and a misleading storefront. COME HERE NOW. Its not a cafe, don't know why the owner chose to name it so The Bay Parkway Chinese restaurant scene, if there is such a thing, consists of a smattering of Chinese take outs, and Joy's K, which is a block away. Long story short, my grandpa has beef w/ Joy's K, so every time we go out for dinner for the past 4 or 5 yrs for his b-day, this place gets our business over Joy's K. Is it the better than Joy's K? Not really, but considering the options, well, there isn't really any options. If you go here for dinner, do not, I repeat, do not sit in the basement. Its cramped, low ceiling, and pretty much doubles as their storage room. Their first floor is much nicer, and there's even a chandelier towards the back. Some of the dishes we ordered: Lobster - It wasn't a steal, I think at $12 each, but it was decent size and tasted good Eggplant - my cousin's fav dish. Its good, but not that good Crystal Shrimp - Really? Such fancy name. It was the same jumbo shrimps that they use for walnut shrimp, minus the walnut and the mayo Fried Chicken - crispy, but a bit dry Clams with black bean sauce - its okay, slightly undercooked, but probably better than overcooked Sizzling sliced sirloin - sliced beef on a hot plate, not bad, not great Tong Choi (Chinese Morning Glory) - They didn't have dou miu (Snow Pea Sprouts) that day, so we ended up with this. Its really isn't bad, especially w/ fermented bean curd paste. Fish - My mom brought a few and had them prepare it. That was my favorite dish, as the entire fish was delicious and didn't have many bones. I even had the fish eye ball, although not as good as the cheeks. Yes. I came here with my family on Mother's Day. They were fairly empty when we went around noontime and we were worried that they weren't good. But I trusted the other yelpers and we gave this place a chance. I'm glad we did! (later on, people rolled it and the place was packed) The food tasted fresh and was overall really good! I didn't expect this type of quality food around here; I've never been a huge fan of Chinese food (even though I'm Chinese; it's probably because my parents cook it at home all the time) but this family style restaurant really did not disappoint! The food here is so much better than Joy's K or the 8th Ave restaurants. I felt like the presentation of the food was well done; nothing was overly salty, oily or overcooked. It was really great! Don't let the name fool you, this is not really a cafe. They are a Cantonese style restaurant. I mainly come here for dinner. The food here is delicious and most importantly, always made fresh. The service here is great, there's an older gentleman, he's always our waiter, and he's just a doll! Sometimes, they don't look too busy, but don't be fooled, they do plenty plenty of delivery and take out. They also have the value meal for take out, where you get 4 dishes for about $30, so worth the money, but they don't offer that menu on holidays and not sure about weekends. On the nights where we don't feel like cooking, we always end up eating here. Come and try it out. read more

I'm not 100% sure, but based on some of the dishes offered, I think this place is pretty authentic. I had Spring Rolls for an appetizer, and the Lo Mein and Eggplant in garlic sauce for an entre. The Spring Rolls were not too oily, and were paired with duck sauce on the side. Portions for the Lo Mein were VERY generous, and the Eggplant was cooked to perfection. The restaurant is clean, comfortable, and nicely decorated with stone tile work. Wait service was average. My family loves coming here for dinner and lunches because it's really close to my grandmas house. I've been here three times, twice for Chinese New Year and once for my grandmas birthday. This restaurant is definitely a solid option for those in the area looking for a Chinese dinner. It's a small space and doesn't seem to ever get crowded - but the food they serve is quite up to standard with bigger restaurants in the area. I like the various ways they cook their flounder and lobster. The management staff speaks some English so that's another plus! So why only 3 stars? Decided to get take out from them today to eat at home for mid autumn festival with the family. Husband walked in to ask about the honey glazed walnut with shrimp in mayo sauce and the owner told him they do not sell it for price listed on menu ($8.95). My husband tried to point it to him and show him but he went and covered it with his hand and dismissed my husband before he even got to do it. He told him the price is not right. The correct price should be $18! Okay, fine he wasnt going to argue but afterwards he went on and says "even if its there im not doing it today *pointing to the menu*". So okay first you do false advertising by changing the price that is clearly listed on your menu then you tell your customer that even if it's there you don't care you not serving it today?! So i guess you good. You gonna last without any customers and you make your money by opening the door everyday with no business. The whole thing that is really upsetting is not about him not serving the item on menu or the changes in their price. The way he came out was really unprofessional and turned us off about coming here for good. Totally just lost yourself a customer and we've been coming here for the last few years!!! If this is how you respond to your customers you will not last long without great customer service to go with the food. The owner(male) charge you for whatever price he wants. If you argue for the price by menu, he will tell you the price on the menu is wrong. Well, I understand sometimes this happen, but I will still pay for the price I got charged if owner can explain to me with patient. Obviously, the owner doesn't have any patient today and he just told me the price on menu is wrong and he would charge me with the price he said no matter what. I was not so sure what the hell is going on, so I asked him again. Guess what? He gave me the extra money I got charged and told me to shut up. HE LITERALLY TOLD ME TO SHUT UP! there were 10 of us for dinner, to celebrate an early mothers day so we dont have a rush on the day of. we ordered 11 dishes with a soup dish. we weren't disappointed! prices were fair, even to my parents and we had more or less the following dishes: clams, mayo shrimp, calamari, ,tung choy, garlic chicken, lobster, fish fillet, beef and veggie dish, eggplant chicken. everything was better than average and some were pretty darn good. i would probably prefer to come back here than to the other chinese restaurant a block away that we usually frequent. the bill was under 300 for everything! read more

This is more a 2.5 review, but I am bumping it because I'm hoping that the place will eventually get better. Been here both for dinner and lunch, and both times, I have been impressed with the food and underwhelmed with the service. Food is tasty, standard Cantonese fare, and probably a step above what you would get at the nearby Joy K's. However, they seem to have some issues with figuring out how to serve food in a timely fashion..the last lunch I had there, my family waited more than 1 hour for the food to come out. In addition, the wait staff did not apologize and seemed more frustrated with us when we would ask when the food was coming out. My dad figured out that it seems to be due to some bizarro way of serving, in which they serve all the dishes that one table orders before moving on to the next table. While that theoretically could work, when most of the tables are ordering like 7 or 8 dishes, it means that there is a considerable period of time when no one is getting any dishes at all. While I want to like this place more, I really can't recommend it that highly, which is a shame since the food is so tasty. Sigh. read more
