This is a long over due review. Bay Custom installed my kitchen countertop in early 2022. The quality of the counertop and the job is great and has held up well with heavy daily use for over 2 years. It was also a GREAT experience working with Bay Custom. I initially reached out to a few places. It was easy to schedule an appointment with Bay Custom. Frank came to my house with samples. He was very knowledgeable and gave me good practical advice on the details. His quiet was also competitive. I remember another place estimated one extra slab for my project even though their price per slab was good. After I double-checked, they figured they could save one slab by doing some special layout! Another great thing I had with Bay Custom was that my project was to replace the existing kitchen countertop. I heard that I had to living without countertops for 3-4 weeks before the new ones are installed, as fabricators usually can only take measurements for fabrication after I remove the old countertops. But Frank had this new technology that he can take measurements without me having to remove old countertops first. So I literally only had less than a day without countertops in my kitchen throughout the project. It was a life saver! :) The customer service was also great. I had a minor issue on one small part of the surface. So I messaged Frank. He showed at my house the same day! It was a small defect from the manufacturer. After having several bids on Cambria Quartz, Bay Custom was the winner. I even had the folks that Costco sends, come out and bid. They were great to work with and very professional. They managed my expectations the entire time, even with a delay from the manufacturer on the materials. They were prompt for every appointment, which is a rarity these days with contractors. The workmanship is flawless! The space was left very clean. I will include pictures at a later time when I decide on and install the backsplash. The Cambria Quartz is the only made in the USA and it is far superior to the stuff from Asia. Cambria quartz has pattern flow like granite without the upkeep. I was happy to spend my money on American made products and have a local company fabricate and install. Bay Area Custom are one of the few Cambria dealers in the Bay Area. They also install granite. Love my new countertops that look amazing!! Thanks Jodi and Ken for making my kitchen and bathrooms look new! I was recommended to them by Creative Wall Designs and I'm glad they did. I got multiple countertop quotes but Jodi came in the middle for price and asked me the most questions of what were my goals for the project. The other vendors just wanted measurements and to just give me the quote. Jodi acted as a consultant walking me thru all the different types of stones and the pros and cons of each stone. After talking with her I decided to go with HIMACS Volcanic Stone in the color Shasta. This is stain resistant stone and you can refinish it if it gets scratched. Since we have 3 year old Twins this seemed perfect over Quartz. We did have a few bumps on the project. First the tear out took over a day which we had not planned since the tile was over 33 years old. The team had to come back on a Sunday to get it completed on time because the painters were starting on Monday to paint my cabinets. Second our materials arrived and were damaged. Monarch had to reorder and that put the schedule out about 3 days. A few days later they installed the bathrooms and we had sinks again woo hoo!! The coving turned out beautiful and I could not see any lines at all on my new countertops. Friday we had the kitchen countertops installed and wow what a transformation! They looked beautiful and the kitchen appeared so much bigger! My 3 year twins said Mommy we have a New Home!! The crew who did the tear out were rushing and did chip the wall and let some of the tear out materials get into my garbage disposal but luckily the plumber was able to vacuum it all out. We were very impressed with the service at Monarch. Our contractor had actually recommended another place but Monarch beat their quote. Coupled with their great reviews on yelp, we decided to move forward with Monarch instead. They were very friendly and helpful from the get go, but most importantly, when part of our countertop arrived with a gouge in it, they took one look at it and told us they would not be comfortable installing it and instead would get us an entirely new section of countertop. We were upset because we thought this would cause even further delay in our remodel, but there was no reason to be! Monarch had a replacement slab ready and installed just a couple days later and it was perfect and beautiful. They apologized profusely and were very honest and diligent in working with us. Loved that the crew showed up in masks. They were great working with me while I had my other remodel crew working on other aspects of my bathroom. They bought the material I asked for and stored it until it was in need. Then, they came to my house, measured everything, made templates of the walls, made the cuts on the material, then installed it in about 3 hours. They did an excellent job of cutting over the plumbing holes, made a shelf insert on one side, and it looks lovely. I used Corian in Jade Onyx...beautiful. read more

Monarch has a small (but nice) showroom in S. San Jose near the Oakridge mall. The showroom is mainly full of solid surface samples such as corian, quartz, acrylics, etc. They have lots of options to look at and carry several manufacturers in each. They DO NOT have any granite slabs, but can of course install them as well if you find and choose the slab you want from elsewhere. From what I gathered the business is run by a husband and wife team, Jodi and Ken. Jodi seems to handle the business end while Ken handles the technical side and installs. Jodi is very thorough and takes the time to explain all the different types of surfaces to you, their pluses, minuses, etc., and really goes in depth to help you understand how the surface will work for you, your family, environment, etc. Ken was also in the showroom when we visited and he's a joy to talk to about the install process (for those that are interested like me). I really got the feeling that he pays close attention to detail and would deliver a high quality install. And in fact this one of the main selling points that Jodi will leverage. After inquiring with about 5 different counter top contractors Monarch became my first choice based on their level of service and the confidence I had in the quality of their workmanship. For a strictly solid surface (quartz) kitchen install their quote was reasonably competitive. However after changing our mind to do a mixed granite/quartz install, after spotting a slab we really liked, their price jumped up quite a bit, considerably more than the retail cost of the slab itself. This didn't make a lot of sense to me as I understood it the material cost difference was only a few hundred bucks at most, but the quote difference was over 1K more. I was never able to get a satisfactory answer as to why the cost was so much more, other than a difference in the material cost (which didn't completely justify the cost difference) and the fact that granite requires more "babying" than quartz. I tried to negotiate the price down and didn't get a response. I really got the feeling that maybe they just don't like working with granite and in turn ask a premium for it, and don't want to negotiate. In the end we decided to go with United Marble and Granite, who by the way does the actual stone cutting for Monarch, and was about 30% less. I really wanted to work with Monarch as I feel it would have been a high quality install and that matters to me. However I just couldn't justify the cost difference. Bottom line, I think Monarch will deliver a high quality service and install and has reasonable prices on solid surfaces. But as soon as you put some granite in the mix their prices jump, and I personally didn't like the break down in communication when I tried to negotiate, especially in today's economy. read more

Ken & Jodi are likely a great team; but beware their sub contractors or employees. Unless Ken & Jodi on the job; beware! Recently we had our bathroom subbed to Monarch; but they sent in the crappy "team". While Ken attempted to remedy their work; they really screwed the pooch on this job. First - the subcontractors were really creepy and they made my wife felt really uncomfortable. Second, Ken attempted to "cover" up the situation by saying that my wife mis-understood when they said, "My, that's a mighty big bowl of noodles for a small asian girl." (Yeah. Seriously. Right? Just listen to that damn sentence). Second - the subcontractors just messed up the measuring and installation of the acrylic into our bathroom remodel. I don't recommend them. Member Comments: When we had finally decided it was time to redo the kitchen we started searching Angie's list and Yelp for a reparable counter company to start the process. She came across Monarch and decided from the reviews that we should take a look at what they had and talk to them. What a great experience. Jodi, one of the owners met us at the show room and took us through the process. Having a partner that is extremely anal and used to work in corp facilities made Monarch's already great process flow with ease. As Jodi and Lisa went through all of the options and talked shop, I did my usual thing and wandered around and looked at all of the samples. I had one hit my eye that was just beautiful and was a brand new product to the market from Corian. Of course as always it was higher price then we were planning but after a little begging of Lisa to find a few extra dollars in the budget it was the final choice and we could not be happier. Monarch took all of our draft measurements that Lisa had done with all the drawings and started the bid process. Since it was going to be a complete kitchen overhaul we also needed a plumber, painter and cabinet worker. Jody had people she recommended who recommended other people and before you knew it we had the team in place and only needed Monarch to come out and reaffirm our initial measurements. They were always on time, kept in constant contact with us and worked with us to make sure the sink and stove we bought could be cut into the counter tops and installed. Having such a great team at Monarch made the process appear to be seamless. The counter top company that they purchased the slab from also had the sink we wanted so it was all ordered at once and the Monarch team had that to use as a template for the new cuts. We cannot recommend this company enough, they are professional, nice to work with and do fantastic work. The corian counter top was processed to look like natural stone, having said that there is always the issue of cutting and matching where the cuts are. Monarch did a fantastic job. If you didn't know where the cuts were to begin with you would not find them. You will not go wrong and will have a fantastic kitchen if you use Monarch, and Jody and Ken's commitment to quality, customer service goes above the industry standard. I am SO please with Monarch. I had Corian installed in my boys' bathroom. It's beautiful, came in 600.00 less than another company and was worked around my chaotic schedule. The company is run with integrity and heart. The owners are honest and forthright and truly care about the satisfaction of their customers. My contractor was not the happiest about my choice, trying to redirect me to two other companies yet when he saw the completed job he raved about their craftsmanship and the perfection of the install. I was 100% pleased with the workers who came into my home. I live in a house of chaos.....I teach art lessons from my home and it's always filled with kids and parents and yappy dogs (mine), teenagers and noise (mine again). Nothing phased these men and they were polite, respectful of my home and my students, did not interfere with my lessons, and were just plain "good guys". They were pleasant to have around and I trusted them completely. I cannot recommend this company highly enough. The work is perfect, not only to my layman's eyes, but to my perfectionist contractor and every parent who peeked around the corner waiting for the kids to finish their art lessons. Jodi and Ken are a great team. The work was quality, and they took the time to address all my concerns before the project was done. Ken really does care about aesthetics and takes pride in his work. One example of his pride is his woodwork that goes underneath the counter... something that you don't ever look at. It is smooth and pleasing to the eye. Another example is their use of silicone (a kind of caulking between the surfaces). They match their silicone to the color of the counter top. They don't just use clear. In my case, the silicone actually sparkles like the counter. Ken installed CeasarStone counter tops in our master bathroom and guest bathroom on two different occasions thi year. The have excellent communication skills by phone, e-mail, and mail, and their prices are great (and I shopped around first). Their billing is simple. Their work is quality. I had my quartz counter top installed by Monarch Solid Surface Designs. I was very impressed by how Jodi spent time to educate me on all the different types of material you can have for a counter top. Since I was able to find the color that I wanted at a competitive price, I decided to go with Monarch. I liked their preciseness and detailed work. The problem I had was that it took much longer to complete the counter top than I thought. It took 3 weeks from the time they got the template to final installation of the final backsplash. Very happy with my new quartz countertops. Jodi was very helpful in the process, and gave me a quote promptly, however it took me a week to get ahold of her to sign a contract. I ended up going to the showroom to get her in person bc I couldn't get her on the phone or through email. I was happy with pricing, and Jodi and Ken really busted to get the work done on my timeline- Jodi even recommended a plumber who hooked up our brand new sink wonderfully! Once I signed the contract Jodi was very easy to get ahold of over the phone. After much research we chose Monarch Solid Surface Designs to install Corian in our kitchen. Monarch happens to be located two blocks from our house, so we were in their showroom a great deal of time during our decision process while deciding to go with granite or quartz or Corian... The stone products are very beautiful, so the decision was very difficult for us. We had installed Corian in a previous home and loved the fully integrated sink, coved backsplash and ease of cleaning and, if chipped or scratched, it's super ease to repair. Stone products don't offer these priority benefits. Monarch is a mom & pop/husband & wife store offering one-on-one services. Ken & Jodi, the co-owners, were wonderful and super patient with us during our protracted research/decision process. Jodi is very knowledgeable and took us several times to the distributors warehouse to view full slabs of the various color samples we were considering. There was absolutely no pressure to buy, which is a priority for us... Ken, a very knowledgeable and nice honest man, meet with us several times at our home where we thoroughly went over what we envisioned the finished product would look like and all our options. After months of research, we finally decided that quartz was what we wanted for our kitchen counters. We visited several shops and saw many samples, but we really didn't connect with the salespeople. We found Monarch on Yelp, and we went for a visit. The samples were the same as we had seen, but the difference was the owner of the shop, Jodi Wallace. She was friendly, but not pushy, knowledgeable, and very professional. She was an excellent listener, and answered all our questions. What sold us was when she said "You are going to be spending a lot of money, you don't want to just like your kitchen counters, you want to love them". I couldn't be more pleased with the product and the work performed by Monarch. Jodi has a very nice selection of products in her showroom and examples of all of the edging treatments. She is extremely knowledgable and can tell you the pros and cons of various different surfaces. She is not like a salesperson, more like an expert consultant. This made it easy to pick exactly the right material and edging for my large custom bathroom vanity. The edging work is lovely and the top is a perfect fit. The installer did a great job and managed to get the top into a tight corner without scratching walls or the custom cabinetry. Amazingly, Jodi was able to keep track of lots of different customers all at the same time. I went to her showroom during the pre-Christmas rush and, after my visit, was trying to decide between two different materials. Since she was tracking all her customers so closely she discovered that the material I was leaning towards was going to be in extremely short supply due to some very large purchases by big developers. She called to let me know that and I was able to secure a piece that was right for my job. I really appreciated the heads up and would have been disappointed if I couldn't have gotten the material I wanted. Mine was a small job yet I got fantastic service. Jodi and Ken did an outstanding job with the countertop and backsplash on our kitchen remodel. Jodi provided a wealth of knowledge and experience in helping us decide not just the type of quartz, but what to consider in selecting the color so that the surfaces go with the floors and cabinets. Ken was great when it came to creating the templates and installing the surfaces. After Ken made the first set of templates we had a small redesign which caused a change to the surface dimensions. Ken quickly came back and re-did the changed template. He also helped us with a decision to replace the existing garden window, which was sagging from age. And he worked with the window person to ensure that a single countertop piece would flow from the sink area directly into the garden window. My initial call to Monarch was for the seemingly impossible. I had a Corian counter with a vege/prep sink in it, but I never used that sink. I wanted to remove it and fill in the space. I had a spare piece of Corian (thanks to the previous owner!) which was just a bit bigger than the sink area. Ken came to the house, evaluated the situation and said it would be tricky but felt they could do it. Working with just the bit of Corian we gave them they pulled it off flawlessly! It looks like there was never anything there. I've had several general contractors through regarding other projects and they've been amazed at what Monarch was able to do. So, for my next project (master bath remodel) I called Jodi. She was very informative and patient as I deliberated over the various materials/colors/edges. I eventually decided on the Buckingham color of Cambria. Unfortunately, Cambria informed Jodi our color was backordered for several months after we were well into the project. We weren't the only Monarch customers affected by this untimely notice from Cambria. Jodi went above and beyond trying to locate a slab for us. Unfortunately, she couldn't find one, so we were back to finding an alternative that would work with our design. Ken and Jodi worked with us to make the switch up as easy as possible and ultimately we were very pleased with the outcome. Great customer service and quality workmanship... that's how I describe Monarch Solid Surface Designs. I research products and companies carefully before I choose them to work on my kitchen since I hire all the contractors myself. After all, I want this work done only once, by honest, competent and meticulous craftsmen. I definitely found these qualities at this company. Jodi and Ken are a great team. She is in charge of the showroom and will take time (I easily spent over two hours) to answer any question about the job, materials, edgings, seam placement, etc., no matter how silly it may seem. In helping me choose the right quartz counter top design for my kitchen, she asked questions pertaining to wall, cabinet and floor cabinet. It was quite helpful since she has excellent taste. Her husband, Ken, is a true craftsman. Since I was keeping my 45 year old uneven kitchen cabinets (they were quite uneven!) which I refinished, he and his team used different thicknesses of plywood in addition to plastic spacers to level it. His team also sanded the plywood, so that customers will not get splinters running their fingers underneath the counter top (a nice touch), and uses color matching silicone caulk, so the back splash doesn't appear to be "floating". Also, Ken made an excellent recommendation that I extend the counter by 10 inches, so that people do not singe their hands near the cook top since it was an open kitchen layout. The installation was perfect - no dust, no mess, which was done in October 2013. I absolutely love my new kitchen and the counter top has certainly added to the ambiance. This follows 3 months without a kitchen, in which we ended up letting our previous contractor go, and finding the products ourselves. Jodi could not have been more helpful. She listened to my story of a kitchen flood and "forced" remodel - walked me through the products thoughtfully - communicated consistently with me - had it delivered and installed in about 2 weeks...this is after 9 weeks of waiting for the last contractor to get the job done. I'm not sure how this place got 5 stars from anyone. First off, their installer showed up with NO TOOLS!! He had to use my tools and my material to try to do the job. The piece was measured wrong from the beginning and since I didn't have all the proper tools for him, he had to come back. On his second visit, he didn't bring a helper, so I was his helper. I had to hold the vacuum for him as he cut the counter top with shaving flying at my face, up my arm and all over my brand new cabinets. I didn't realize I was paying full price for a "hands on experience". The plywood they brought out was too thick so once again, the installer was going to have to come back. Third time was a charm. They finally finished my bar top. If I had this many issues with a small bar top, I can't imagine a job on a larger scale. Lastly, it's been almost 2 months and they have yet to give me a receipt! I've contacted both Jodi and ken and apparently it's lost in file somewhere. I originally wasn't going to write a review because I don't like bad mouthing local businesses but after refusing to give me a receipt, I feel I have to. I needed some repair work on an existing Corian Shower and hired a "so called" Corian repair expert. After watching him underperform for a day, I let him go and called Monarch Designs. Jodi set up an appointment and I met with Ken to see if he could make something out of this botched repair job. The next day, a technician came out and fixed the job beyond my expectations - in half the time that it took the first guy to screw it up. This was a small job and they were able to squeeze me in, even though they were extremely busy with a large new installation job. My wife and I absolutely hated the white tile kitchen countertops that our house came with and were scheming to get rid of them for the past couple of years. We finally decided to go for it late last year and my wife did extensive research to figure out whether to get quartz or granite, what color and style, what kind of sink, and most importantly, who to give the job to. Thanks to Yelp, she discovered Monarch. All of the positive reviews turned out to be spot-on! On our first visit with Jodi, she impressed us with her wealth of knowledge and her ability to help us answer our own questions about what we really wanted. We visited a couple of other businesses that were highly-rated on Yelp but ultimately decided on Monarch - the others just didn't seem as interested in taking our business. Granted, our kitchen is pretty small and it would not have been a high-dollar job, but Jodi made us feel that we were as important to them as someone with a kitchen twice as big and really spent a lot of time with us to make sure we would ultimately be happy with what we got. We even got to visit a couple of houses where they had recently done work. We coordinated with Jodi and Ken on a schedule that worked for us and on the day of the tear-down, they were very prompt. The guys who came over were very careful about protecting the floor, our cabinets, and the rest of the house from dust, rubble, etc., and even left the sink intact and the counters covered with plastic sheets so that we could still use the kitchen until installation day. The installation itself went very smoothly and the results exceeded our expectations! We were expecting to see a couple of seams in the countertop (our kitchen is a "U" shape, so we needed two "L" shaped pieces), but they were able to put in two slabs without any seams at all. Thanks to Jodi spending so much time with us, we loved the color/pattern and the edges we eventually chose, the backsplash, the sink, everything! The cost was entirely reasonable for the work done. We were on a budget and Jodi gave us valuable tips on how to reduce the cost of the work we wanted done.
