TLDR: Upon arriving home, my wife (who was mostly concerned about how dirty everything was going to be) said, "My God, its cleaner than when they started!" Aaaand Mario's bid for the work was several hundred lower than any of the other 5 bids. 'Nuff said. The story: We had a big chinese elm tree that died over the course of the summer, and with winter coming we needed to have it removed before winter storms could cause damage. There was also a large cyprus tree that needed to be trimmed back but was on a difficult slope over some wooden decks. We asked for bids from 5 different companies via yelp, and Mario sent a resonable estimate based on the picture I sent. Other companies came by and estimated the project between $200 and $1500 more than Mario's bid. After checking Mario's business license, contractor's license, and that his insurance was valid (I've been burned before, so now I check), we set a up a time for his team to come at 8am Friday. At 7:59, the doorbell rings, and they got to work. We were concerned that they might accidentally kick the sprinkler heads all around the tree. No worries there, he put traffic cones over all the sprinklers to protect them and remind his guys to be careful of them. Nice! They were efficient with how they took the tree down using ropes and chainsaws. It was actually pretty fun to watch, and also made me happy that I decided to let professionals handle it. When we left to run errands, they had just finished grinding the stump. It turns out that the stump was right next to one of our sprinkler lines! No worries. One of his guys was over fixing it the same way I would have. When we were driving back to the house, my wife was saying how she hoped the tree guys didn't leave as huge a mess as our concrete guys did. We pulled up to the house and grounds looking nicer than when they arrived earlier that morning. They even bought an extra bag of new mulch the same color as ours and spread it over the area where the stump had been! The good: Great Price! Great communication. Worked efficiently, professionally, and were genuinely nice people. The end result was exactly what we wanted from a tree standpoint and more than we hoped for with the clean up effort. They thinned the entire tree canopy carefully from top to bottom and brought the tree back to a safer and more manageable size, it looks beautiful!!!!
