We have several hundred feet of absolutely gorgeous mahogany handrails that ring a large raised deck. Unfortunately, the long curved sections that descend to the pool area had suffered from a lack of attention (totally my fault) and water intrusion and needed to be replaced. This was a daunting job - the wood had to match the cross-section and appearance of the existing railing, while curving and descending 2 stories. It is about 130 linear feet. Steve and Tom came out to survey the job and said, "no problem". I must confess to being skeptical given the complexity. They took the old sections, and a month later returned with beautiful matching replacements. Tom spent a week carefully aligning and hand fitting them to the steel structure. We hired Bay Area Stairs (BAS) to build a spiral stair in our newly renovated house in Marin County. The rough steel structure was put in place by our builder and we needed stair expertise to finish it. Their estimate came in much higher than we budgeted for, but since Steve (one of the owners) promised an exceptional quality execution, we signed the contract awaiting his promised high end delivery. Time estimate to complete the work was 2-3 months (+ 6 weeks for pandemic lock down). Unfortunately what followed was over a year of unsatisfying performance in conjunction with a difficult relationship with BAS management. Work was sporadic, inconsistent in terms of timeliness and quality. There were no shows, late in the day shows and overall poor management oversight. Work often had to be redone, as it was unsatisfactory. That said, we'd like to praise one of the carpenters, Tom, who had outstanding workmanship skills that in our opinion greatly contributed to the project. 10 months later, the final structure was unveiled and was ready for painting. Again, Steve claimed that Bay Area Stairs had unique expertise to paint stairs and promised top quality results. Unfortunately that did not go well. The paint color did not match the samples we were given. Furthermore, execution quality was very poor. After 3 additional months, 2 different painting teams provided by BAS, and more emotional toll... we finally asked Bay Area Stairs to leave the premises and we hired our own painters to redo the whole paint job. Obviously our experience fell well short of expectations. read more

I wish I had found Bay Area Stairs sooner. We were remodeling our house and wanted a different look. Anyhow, we hired this other company who came highly recommended by our designer (BIG MISTAKE). The owner came out to meet with my husband, everything was good in the beginning. First few appointments seemed to go smoothly and then it went downhill from there. For the first few weeks they were at my home they had different people coming to work on the stairs each day. They had to come back multiple times to fix their mistakes. When it was all said and done I was not happy with their work at all so I decided to find a new company and that's when I came across Eric's company. From the beginning he was so helpful and knowledgeable. I talked to him multiple times on the phone and by the end of the week I knew I had found the right company to do the job. We scheduled an appointment for Victor and Frank to come out and it was night and day. Those guys are so professional and knew exactly what they were doing. They got the job done in two days and then Eric scheduled an appointment for the paint guys to come out to do the staining. He told me (in the beginning) that one of them just got married and was on his honeymoon so they can't come out until the following week which was fine because they did an amazing job. Eric is also very honest with his pricing. He came by the house to meet with me and asked if I was happy with their work which I thought was so nice and professional of him. We ended up paying less than the initial price because they didn't have to change the newel and posts. Victor and Frank were able to save it and not damage it when they were removing the balusters. These guys are great! Not only is their work fabulous, they came in ahead of schedule and on budget. How often do you see that in construction? Anyone who's looked for stairs builders in the Bay Area knows there are only a few qualified companies. Our research showed Bay Area Stairs is at the top of that list. They fully justified their ranking on our job, which involved a complicated replacement of an existing staircase with new stairs to a third floor. Using Bay Area Stairs' CAD system, we were able to see 3D designs of the proposed staircase and make minor adjustments to get the details right before construction started. After the design was finished, Bay Area Stairs started work on our stairs in their shop, while other contractors completed preparation of the stairwell. Once the stairwell was done, Bay Area Stairs brought in their crew and installation of the stairs was completed a week ahead of schedule. They came back for finish work and painting when the other work completed, and took care of minor punch list items promptly and without complaint. If everyone performed like these guys, the construction industry would be viewed in a whole new light. read more

Bay Area Stairs is a small company that makes a high-end hand crafted product. Their focus is mostly on staircases, but the also do other custom millwork, custom mantels, doors, tables, that sort of thing. I have used them on several occasions and have been pleased with their work. You have to understand, this is old world craftsmanship. What you are seeing take place in this shop is a talent that I am glad still exists - they take quality wood and turn it into an object that is extremely beautiful, functional and will outlast your lifetime. That is what woodworking is all about. Their prices are not cheap, but they are fair. You will be probably be paying more for the product here than if you have your local contractor but it is worth it. Who knows, you might be surprised at how their products fit into your budget. I would knock half a star off for their dinky showroom, but that would only be to encourage them to showcase more of their beautiful creations and talents. read more

Lousy customer service. Made an appointment to talk to them about doing the stairs in my home one afternoon. Raced home from work... and... no show, no call. Okay, it can happen. People are busy. I tried again recently because this is something we really want to do. They called and got some information from me and said they would call back soon with a starting point estimate so I had a ballpark figure to start from. No call, no followup. And let me point out that I live in the town they operate out of, 10-minutes from their operation.
