I have been stopping in here for years, and always thought their Baxter Mt Burger (half lb of 80/20, swiss, mushrooms,onions) was excellent. Not this time. I ordered it med well. It came out with pink. Above and beyond, very greasy to the point where the bun fell apart. The salad was decent, nothing special. Price of $15 was substantially higher than what I've recently paid, for better food. I guess when you're the only game in the area, you don't need to be on your game as much. Food is brought out in to-go containers w plastic forks. I understand the need for safety, but all the eateries I've been to in the past year are passed this protocol. Baxter Mountain Tavern is a super local restaurant and pub in the Adirondack Mountains. I had the good fortune to be a part of a large group of 9, who reserved a table in the "back room" to celebrate a birthday. The back room has a wonderful view of the outdoors. We were waited on promptly by two very attentive servers. I ended up ordering a couple of salsa and chip apps for the table, which were very welcome and went pretty quickly! For dinner, I chose steak fajitas, which was a generous platter with steak, lettuce, tomato, shredded cheese and four tortillas. All in all, we had a wonderful evening at the BMT and ended up walking home in the dark while stargazing along the way! read more

All I have is bar seating and if there are 3 of you too bad you have to sit in between the plexiglass it can't be moved ! . Since we were hungry we decided to stay and sit at bar , once seated- Alex was the same rudeness to everyone whom came in after us -We soon Discovered he was the Bartender, Waiter ,Host , Take our Server , all solo with 6 tables and of the 8 seats at bar 4-6 were taken - Yes he was busy and did a great job with all he had going on , yet still unacceptably Rude to all of the guests. We Had An arugula / Beet Salad which for $16.00 was pricey and small . The Burger was Tasty and I opted for a salad in place of fries which was rather large for a side , we ate it all . Went there tonight, staff was friendly and attentive but they're running it in a unique way that isn't exactly full service as you have to go up and order drinks and pay bills and basically do much of the work as you're expected to throw out your food as well. But going to the food - prices were fair for the area as many were closed - wife got a salad and a quesadilla and I got the watermelon salad and a burger. Burger was good, roll was eh and they didn't give me any mustard or ketchup or bbq to put on until I asked. We were hiking in the Adirondacks. During Covid many businesses are closed so we ended up at the Baxter Mountain restaurant. As vegetarians we were pleased to see several options. Their cocktails and selection of beer and cider are fantastic. It was nice to be able to sit down outside and have a meal, admittedly in a takeout setting, but I appreciated the ability to sit down and have a meal. I also loved the sign "no short, no shoes, no problem- no mask, no service." We came back the next day for lunch after a hike up the hurricane mountain. Food was delicious, made with care. Setting wonderful. A nice touch that some of the herbs come from their own herb planters. High quality food, great setting. Highly recommended. read more

We visited at about 5:00 PM on a busy day (sep 26). The two earnest women manning the orders, the bar, order delivery, table clearing, were clearly overwhelmed. Our first drink order was forgotten, then the food order took well over 1 hour to arrive. The beautiful view on a beautiful evening, sufficed for the first 30 minutes, but then it became absurd. Two groups who arrived after left without being served. About 1.5 hours after we had arrived we had our food. So they were understaffed by far and had no leadership. Where was the manager or owner??!!The poor servers were left on the front lines to field all orders and eventually bear the brunt of everyone's frustration. I felt bad for them. The food was good and view spectacular and if the service was merely passable I would give it rave reviews. read more

We had dinner at BMT last night and can't say enough good things about it! It is beautifully decorated, cozy and inviting. The staff is friendly and attentive. And the food is next level delicious! The chef(s) knows what they are doing! My husband had the fish tacos and the ADK Bolognese and I had the pulled brisket sandwich. There are so many levels of flavor in each dish. We didn't have room for dessert but will definitely have something when we come back. How lucky to have such a wonderful dining experience here in Keene! Highly recommend!!!! read more

Apparently this establishment was remodeled this summer--it looks new. It is invitingly in front of a mountain and its lodge like exterior fits the area. Our waitress was attentive, positive, engaging. My Salmon was prepared perfectly and my wife loved her Root Vegetable Stew. There are two wood burning stoves and a small but roomy bar. Absolutely will never use this place again. Ever. In fact, I hiked 16 miles yesterday and ate Stewarts pizza rather than use this place after what happened the night before. Called at 6pm. Ordered a pulled pork sandwich and slaw, a cheeseburger and upgraded for a charge to sweet potato fries. Comes with a drink. Asked for iced tea. Was told "45 minutes to an hour. Probably. I mean we're just really busy. If you come at 7:20 you should get your stuff." Me: your website says you take payment over the phone to limit social contact. I have my payment ready. Employee: well, we're just really busy right now. Is it ok if I just run your card when you get here? Arrive at 7:15, huge, absolutely HUGE line of people. In line beside their deck seating area in notable compliance with a sign stating "got a drink? Take a seat." One lady tells me she had placed an online order 2 hours ago and has been waiting an hour to pick it up. I wait 20 minutes to say I'm here for my order. 20 minutes later the food comes out. I say, "is my bbq sauce in with the fries or do I need a container as I see you have ketchup containers here." Im told it is in the bag. I paid almost $50 with tip for 2 sandwiches 2 sides and 1 drink. When I got back to the Inn we were staying at prior to hiking the High Peaks, there was no bbq sauce and no ice tea. When I say my medium rare burger was not. I mean it was brown all the way through. It had been cooked high and hot and was succulent as shoe leather and tasted exactly as well seasoned. The sweet potato fries clearly were freshly sliced and should have been delicious except some were cold and some were wilted and some were super hot. Disappointed, unhappy, and disgusted. read more

The restaurant just reopened under new management. Food was delicious. Restaurant was clean and waitress was super friendly. My 14 yo son ordered duck. It was cooked perfectly. My hubby had pork chops and the meat was tender and flavorful. We devoured everything, including mezze platter. But the figs- o, those figs were so perfect with everything. Went there last night for the first time so we have no comparison for what it was like previously but we were pleasantly surprised by the ambiance and the view in the back room. We shared an order of the Brussels sprouts app which was perfectly cooked and each had a burger. My sweet potato black bean burger was one of the best bean burgers I've had and the fries were thin and crispy, my favorite way! My husband said his wild burger was perfectly done and the onion rings were great. Ended our meal with a shared brownie sundae which was fantastic. We will definitely be back! read more

Baxter Mt. Tavern has been our "go to" restaurant for many years, so we were keeping our fingers crossed about the new menu. At our first return visit we were satisfied that enough old favorites remained to make us come back. Our second visit wasn't quite up to par. The staff didn't seem too experienced-asked if I wanted Alfredo or Marinara sauce on my lasagna! Then my fiancée found a hair in her dish which the staff brought back to the kitchen but didn't even offer to take back the dish. The bread pudding, another favorite, was served lukewarm. The place has been at this location for a long time under many names. It was always a hotspot for hikers to have dinner after a long day in the mountains, and it's still is, but it seems more tourist oriented now. Back when it was "Murphy's ", the food and the atmosphere were casual and it was a really fun place to eat, with decent food that didn't cost too much. Now it seems more like a four-star wanna-be, that still serves three star food. I've been there several times over the past seven years and each time I felt that presentation was given more credence than quality. The place has become expensive and kind of trendy, but still with middle-of-the-road quality. It's still available for dinner out after a hike because there is simply no other place within a decent drive that competes with it, so if you're in that neck of the woods, go right ahead. Your meal and drinks will be fine. If you're closer to the lake placid area, don't bother making a trip out this way. read more

What a horrible experience. The restaurant closes at 9 pm, we arrived at 8:15. Granted this is on the later side, we still shouldn't have been treated the way we were. Open entering, the bar tender said to us that we have 10 min to order food, (really ?) . Foolishly I agreed to sit down at the bar for dinner. Felt so rushed and totally unwelcome by him. He warned us that the appetizer will come out at the same time as the dinner. This man was the epitome of unprofessional. I ordered a burger and it was totally over cooked despite me asking it for medium rare. Surprisingly my girlfriend's lobster roll was decent, but that did not make up for the way we were treated by our "server" . I understand people may be going through something personal, but this man was so unprofessional it was absolutely mind blowing to me that this is how an employee treats a customer in a restaurant. We went to Baxter's after my step fathers memorial. Had made a reservation for 12 people. Every plate was lukewarm. The only plate that had hot fries was my cousins child's plate, which was only fries and came out 10 minutes after every one else's. The waitress never asked if we wanted refills on our drinks, never asked how our food was. Was not attentive at all. Had the restaurant been extremely busy I would have understood. But the staff seemed more interested in socializing with themselves than serving our table. Very disappointed with the service and food. read more

Burgers and beer is the best celebration after ice climbing... Especially when you can warm your toes in front of a beautiful fireplace! We both ordered the 8oz burger which was so juicy- cooked medium to perfection. We ignored our diet that night and it was well worth it. They sat us right by the fireplace, had a great view of the tv screen at the bar (football fanatic here), had some good selections of beer, and the staff was super sweet. Who I thought was the manager was actually the owner - David Deyo & he was so welcoming and easy going. Sit by the fireplace (if no one is hogging up the couch- there really should be a 10min time limit!) while you wait for your food, kick back, relax, and enjoy. We booked a dinner experience @ Baxter Tavern for our anniversary and Tori and his crew did a great job making and serving the dishes. Their restaurants has a very homely and cozy feel with a personal touch. Our favorite among the foods that we got to taste was the sweet potato and chic pea curry and eggplant parmesan! And yes not to forget the bread pudding dessert we loved it and ordered another as extra. The bar area is pretty and also probably they have great views to the mountain in the morning. Really don't have much else to say about the entrees. We also got coconut shrimp as an appetizer, $10 for 5 pieces that are the same exact kind we get frozen at the store. This place was great. I appreciated their clear precautions during the pandemic with regards to cleanliness. I also appreciate a business that takes the safety of their staff and customers seriously even going as far to voluntarily close their indoor dining spaces. We had the Baxter burger and a bacon cheese burger with fries and onion rings. We also ordered the Mac and cheese with bacon because it sounded too good to pass up. All of the food was outstanding and so satisfying. The best part though were the two waitresses. Faith greeted us, helped us decide what to get and was incredibly helpful the entire evening. The other waitress, who's name I didn't get, was incredible too running food for all of the tables and making sure orders were fulfilled. Even though we got caught in a downpour I am so happy we decided on this patio restaurant. There are larger picnic tables under a covered patio section for bigger groups and several 2 tops that were covered enough that we didn't get more than a sprinkle. Such a fun easy going vibe. Let me get this out of the way, I had the Baxter burger and a Switchback Ale and they were delicious! That's about all I have to say that is good. After a long day of hiking, all I wanted was a burger and beer. So I found this place on yelp and headed out. When my two friends and myself entered the "tavern" we were greeted by a friendly hostess who attempted to seat us until she was shooshed by what I would assume is her manager. He then asked us if we had a reservation (which I would never expect at a tavern). When we said no, he looked annoyed, told the hostes to tell us that we could sit at the bar. She said "would you like to sit at the bar?" We said that works fine. He then tells us "then go!" As if he were showing away children. VERY RUDE! When we sat at the bar the bar tender got us our menus and a beer right away, but then she got an attitude when my friend had questions about a salad. After she wrote down our orders I let her know that in was going to be separate checks to which she replied "you could have told me that before I wrote it down!" After that she was mildly attentive at best, while she conversed with the manager (who had about three glasses of wine in the time I was there) and belittled a new employee. Our med rare burgers took about 35 mins to come out but were on point and there fries suck (just my opinion of course). Over all the foods pretty good the people that run the place suck. read more

This was the first place I used to eat when I got into town. Not anymore. Never again. We sat down at 6:30 but were told our order would not be taken until 7pm. We should have left then and there. We ordered some burgers and quesadillas. Our food didn't come out until 7:45. The food was awful (my mother and I ordered burgers medium rare. Mine was raw hers came out well done.) and when I inquired when our food would be ready I was rudely told "I don't know." No inquiry to the kitchen was made. The restaurant was not busy and I can see why. As we were waiting I overheard waitresses being told to "wait 15 minutes" before waiting on other patrons. Don't know what's going on over there. We stopped here after a long day of hiking and got the cheese burger (grass fed) and beyond burger. The portions were definitely generous without feeling overwhelming and the lettuce, tomato, and onion were obviously all very fresh. When I asked for extra crispy fries they were exactly what I was hoping for. Both meals absolutely hit the spot and the side of guac was undoubtedly homemade. The drinks were both a fair price and made *very* well. If anyone doesn't enjoy this place it's likely their fault. The property is gorgeous and the staff is efficient and friendly. Okay the food is a staple , it's above average pub food, but the views is why I gave it five stars, your surrounded by the adks but most importantly your right across the way from Baxter mountain. If you can go on a semi blue cloudy day you will find piece and quite you never have had before and lunch will be perfect! I usually don't review a place after one visit but since I'm not sure how often I will be back in the Adirondacks, wanted to add review for travelers. If you are staying in the Keene area, there are a few dining options and we tried most. Baxter Mtn Tavern is standard grill fare but has amazing views in the back seating area which is lovely for dinner and make it the best dinner spot in Keene or Keene Valley. Prices are fair for the food and range from very reasonable for the casual fare to about par for the course for dinner entrees in a vacation area. Service is friendly and prompt but not rushed. Tips on finding it: when you are on NYS-73, turn off between Keene and Keene Valley in the direction of Elizabethtown and you'll see it after you go up the hill on your left. read more

Baxter Mountain Tavern is on my MUST DO list every time I head to the Adirondacks. It's just a short ride up Route 9 (a couple off minutes really) off of Route 73 in Keene. It has a lot of character and charm and Dave the owner and his staff do a fantastic job serving great food in a really fun and friendly way. Be sure to eat outside on the deck when the weather is nice and ask to be seated inside near the beautiful fireplace in the winter. I recommend this great restaurant to everyone I know who visits the Lake Placid area. It really is worth the trip! read more
