It was impossible to make a reservation or even get a response from staff members. I left my contact info with front desk staff, and no response whatsoever. Located in the prestigious Lake Placid Lodge. There was a fire that destroyed the previously restored hotel in 2006 (or maybe 2005) but before that I had visited and had the great honor to spend some time with Forrest "Dew Drop" Morgan. A local celebrity, a WWII Vet, Coach for the US Bobsledding Team, and an accomplished storyteller who was the owner of the Dew Drop Inn in Saranac Lake, NY. He also bartended at the Lake Placid Lodge. He's gone now but I had to mention him as a local fixture, celebrity, and just a wonderful human being. Anyway, on to Maggie's. It's a cozy place in an amazing building. Google the Lake Placid Lodge to get the full story. I'm here for a writing retreat for a few days so this review might (lol) cover multiple meals. Why multiple meals? Because I'm here for a few days and it's a lot of fun to be able to eat here (and maybe their fancy restaurant - Artisans) and not drive! First up, a classic simple vodka martini. No vermouth, olives, and stirred not shaken. Executed perfectly thanks to the super friendly bartender. Next up to just sort of check it out was the French onion soup. Different than what you would expect with lots of crispy fried onions. The onion stock could have been stronger and they could have tripled the amount of high quality Gruyère. I mean really... I pretty much order FOS for the cheese... Still, for a bar, I'd give it a solid 7.5 out of ten. Next were some PEI oysters. Sorry, I ate one before I took the picture. They had a cucumber mignonette sauce which was really cool. Not briny but this cucumber thing was really something different and creative. This was actually off the fancy restaurant's menu (Artisans) and the bartender graciously let me order them. Course #3 - 'Dack Salad - Mixed Greens with Quinoa, White Balsamic Dressing, Labneh, Asparagus, Watermelon Radish and Sunflower seeds. Yes, what a great salad... as long as get rid of the Quinoa! Just my personal non-preference. Yeah, it's got fiber which is good but it just didn't vibe with the wonderful greens and balsamic. I hate yogurt. Sorry... but this Labneh somehow worked nicely. This is a great salad and with a protein, a meal. Lastly a burger. Local beef from Donohue Farms. Yes! It comes with a bacon marmalade (I love bacon, bacon marmalade, nope) which I got on the side and Meier's smoked cheddar (love smoked things but not on my burger tonight). Luckily they let me get some American cheese (yeah I know but I love it on burgers). The menu mentions Tucker Farms Pommes Frites so I'm assuming they are local farm fries. Ok, the burger with my modifications was great! One complaint. Maybe you can see it in the picture but if you only have tasteless anemic tomatoes, let's just not use them. Otherwise I loved it. The fries were great but had this white powder that I couldn't figure out. Ended up it was a truffle Parmesan but it didn't really taste like either. Though subtle might be a good thing. Overall I'd give this place a solid 3.9 but made it 4 stars for the environment, history, and great service! I'll be back tomorrow... Oh! By the way, Cory was the awesome bartender and Becky was the great attentive and friendly server who found me some Drambuie which I haven't had in years... maybe this place need more than 4 stars lol... read more

Walking into the Lake Placid Lodge is like walking into a Ralph Lauren showroom! The lodge, with its impeccable wood and antler decor makes you feel right at home in the Adirondacks. Now enter Maggie's Pub - the quintessential Ralph Lauren family room. The bar is beautifully decorated with wood and vines and the wooden bar stools are actually comfortable! This night we happened to sit at a table for two. We knew we wanted the yummy Caesar salad but the chicken pot pie was new on the menu and it was awesome! Full of flavor with a delicate puff pasty crust to top it off. My Cosmo was perfect and my husband had a Negroni. With the fireplace roaring and tables full, it felt like we were guests in someone's home. Service was very good. Always a great experience! read more

While my typical grade would be 4-star, Maggie's stands out among the constellation of lackluster Lake Placid gastronomic destinations. First off, the best fries we had out of 5 or 6 attempts: fresh and golden and not over cooked or cooked in old oil. We had the duck wings (excellent glaze and crispy but not dry-a good indication of a knowledgeable chef), two very good burgers with aforementioned fries, and chicken pot pie. To be picky, the proportion of mashed potatoes to peas and carrots heavily favored the mash potatoes and was the least tasty of the table requiring some more flavoring. We usually stop by Maggie's Pub if we spend the weekend in Lake Placid. The best part is that you don't have to be a guest at the lodge in order to eat here, so if you're just traveling through you can enjoy a nice view (if you sit outside), or sit inside by the fireplace. I would definitely recommend having a cocktail from the bar to start your dinner. Although a bit on the pricier side, they are definitely worth the splurge. Menu options are great, and I've been told that they may have the best burger in Lake Placid...Still making my rounds to confirm if this is true, but so far it hasn't proven false. read more

OK - the best kept secret in Lake Placid. Maggie's Pub is tucked into the Lake Placid Lodge, one of the top rated hotels in the country. The food is not posh and the environment is far from snooty; probably more down to earth than some of the other restaurants in the area. Menu is traditional American with such fare as crab cakes with fresh avocado, steak frites, black angus burger with caramelized onions, seared salmon on a white bean salad w/ bacon and cilantro, and....warm sticky toffee cake. Environment is amazing; like being in one of the great Adirondack camps from the past. Tons of wood, hand crafted furniture, hand blown glassware, fireplaces made from stone from local artisans. And then there are the views from either inside or out! - absolutely amazing; all for $14 for main course!?!? Tell them to raise their prices! Service is very personable; the wait staff are truly interested in you and your experience. They love hearing your likes and dislikes to make sure whatever you order is to your liking. The chef rocks; totally accommodating and brilliant; plus he looks like Liam Neeson crossed with Tom Cruise. Oh, then there is the bar with some of the best cocktails outside of New York City; had crafted to scrumptiousdidiliyumptious! The wine list is off the hook too; one night I was there and they showed me the cellar/cave; wow...... Anyway, I hear the hotel is like $700 a night and so I thought this would be too up-nose for me but I was wrong, one of the best kept secrets in Lake Placid; Maggie' Pub is the real deal. read more

The "pub" is in a hotel for the well heeled ($600/night on the low end), but the pub/restaurant are open for all. The menu for Maggie's was definitely not pub food but is very good. We shared a couple of glasses of average Oregon pinot noir. Cauliflower soup was surprisingly tangy/tart, and the wedge salad's dressing was also a little tangy for my taste - but both were still good... the chef seems to like above-average acidity in a finished dish. Beef stew was delicious but not really creative or worth the price tag; chicken over smoked polenta was good but not stellar. Everything is priced about 25-30% higher than you'd pay in most other places, I'm assuming because the hotel is clearly top notch and the setting is Adirondack chic - the room itself is really enjoyable. The service is where it fell apart. We were introduced to one server who said she and another server would be "taking care of us," but then a new server started to take our orders. After she asked if we'd like more wine, she never returned to take the order. We waited literally about 15 minutes after finishing the meal and not a single server was to be seen. I eventually got up an asked the host David if we could have the check. He was consistently friendly. Overall, a neat ADK experience. Two glasses of wine, two apps, two entrees before tip was $130. It MIGHT have been worth it if servers were available and prompt, which was not the case. I'd sooner return just to see the room and have a drink at the bar. read more

Maggie's Pub was wonderful. If you're lucky in season, you might score a table outside and enjoy the view. It was a bit cool on the night we were there so we ate inside. Pre Fix menu was $34 each. Very nice, nothing special. But the ambience was wonderful and they had live acoustic music. No one was in Artisan's next door where the prices were much higher but the pub was packed. Definitely worth having a drink at the bar and then touring the lodge afterwards. I suppose the only downside to the evening was there an awful lot of pretentous MD's in attendance who had been at a conference at the Lodge and were anxious to talk about their $ and try and try and outspend each other with wine. But that's the way of many of the wealthy. Too bad they don't realize what pretentious twits they are. But then twits attract other twits so they are happy. By the way, I really wish I could stay here. The reviews for the hotel are fantastic. But oh my, the place is so pricey. We stayed at a cute little place right around the corner called the Garden Cottage which used to be the old smoking gazebo for "fine gentleman" of a different era for one of the grand hotels here. This is great little hideaway to get a great cup of hot cocoa (seriously, if it's the winter - get the hot cocoa). The food is tasty and hearty. Maggie the dog is a sweetheart and likes to sit by you to get your head scratched or run outside and play around. There's games and a pool table to just lounge around. It's a nice little hiding spot for my husband and I to escape. read more

The place you must visit!!! Yes, hotel is expensive, but outside visitors are welcome to hit Maggie's pub- downstairs in hotel. So cozy, ambience is great. Employees are super nice and friendly. Food- delicious. We ordered the cheese plate for $26 when we went the year before and they baked me a whole loaf of the fruit n nut bread that came with the plate to take home for $20-25. The best bread I ever ate. This time March 2013, we split the fish n chips for $16. Huge portion. Fresh Cod. Light batter. Delicious fries. Just perfect. They didn't even charge a split fee- like at most restaurants. I will definitely be back. #1 spot in LP for sure. I also love that this place is casual, yet totally romantic. read more

I sauntered in alone one day, my husband off to ski whiteface. The bartender was incredibly attentive, setting me up early (half hour before they opened)- with a coffee, and lighting the fireplace. Her service was wonderful and made such a difference on a day when I could have been stuck in a diner, hiding away from the minus degree wind chill. I enjoyed the coffee, and then ordered a delicious grilled ham and cheese and a glass of Sauvignon Blanc. Definitely a welcoming and lovely place! read more

Maggie's at the Lake Placid Lodge was highly recommended by a friend. I am always hesitant of those that oversell a place because they tend to underwhelm me upon arrival. Maggie's at the Lake Placid Lodge was the exact opposite. It was everything and more. The Lake Placid Lodge is set behind the golf course located right on the water. Driving through the course in the October is beautiful in itself. Once we arrived at The Lodge we were directed downstairs to Maggie's. There was still outdoor seating available on the deck. Everyone who was there for lunch was sitting out on the deck even though it was a bit chilly. The view was that tremendous. There was only one server for the tables, which caused the service to be a bit slow, but it was worth the wait. The beet salad, tomato soup with grilled cheese, and burger were all phenomenal. The grilled cheese was made with a goat cheese that was a different take than your typical grilled cheese. It worked perfect with the tomato soup, which was delicious. It was definitely our favorite part of the meal. After the lunch we played pool inside in the bar, which was a rustic decor. I could have spent the entire afternoon relaxing by either of their two fireplaces. If you are up in the area, stopping here is a must! read more

It's a crying shame that this only has 3 stars as I go to write the review. TL;DR The two 1 star reviews dragging this down are people complaining about the no kids policy. So if you have kids, don't come. If you don't and the price doesn't scare you away, go for it.. My wife and I were in Lake Placid for a honeymoon. We decided to check out this lodge because it is pretty famous and take some pictures. After pictures we decided we were hungry and would grab a small bite to eat. It was a bit cold, but we sat out on the now enclosed porch. Great view over the lake, would be especially good during the summer when it uis completely open. They did have a heat lamp out there, so I assume they do food out here until at least late in the fall. Almost worth it just for the view. Everything seemed super fresh and made with high quality ingredients. The presentation of each dish was also excellent. Huge lumps of crab in my crab cakes, the mushroom soup was light and fluffy and rich, the brownie sundae was beautifully crafted with homemade icecream and some peanut "snow" (I don't know what it is really called). I would definitely recommend this place to anyone going lake placid. read more

We were told we had to visit lake placid lodge when we were there for our anniversary. We went to Maggie's based on reviews. View was very pretty, as we ate outside I ordered the blueberry mojito that was excellent. We started with the cheese plate, for $24, which was ridiculous. There were three types of cheese. No explanation of what type of cheese we were given. The food was awful. I had the Bolognese, which was a C at best. Very little flavor, not enough sauce. My husband got the chicken breast which came and you did not know what you were eating. His meal was basically "slop". We spent $125 plus tip for an awful meal. We stopped and got a slice of pizza in town after that experience. read more

Well, the other reviews listed here paint a picture that isn't usually the case when we go. We live in Lake Placid and we visit the Lodge when we have friends visiting or if we want a change of pace. This past visit had enough issues that I decided to write a review. Disclaimer-my husband and I got married there and we love the Lodge. First of all the service is just off. It's either really slow or it's inattentive. We started at the bar. We ordered drinks. My husband got his right away and I waited 10 minutes for mine-it wasn't busy. We moved to a table when friends arrived. We ordered an appetizer and entrees. One item we ordered was the Pot Pie. Normally this is chicken but that night it was turkey. Fine. But when it was served it had zero sauce and had about 10 small vegetables in it. It was inedible. No accommodations were made for it. The rest of our meals were fine, nothing particularly special. The drink prices are a bit outrageous for a pour of just alcohol-we know the prices are high there, it's part of the visit but...... You can charge $20 for tequila but does it really need to be a measured pour? This may not seem like a reason for 2 stars but this is after about 30 visits to the Lodge and the service and the food stays mediocre or worse. Part of the price here involves the awesome building but for someone who lives in town it has become a place that I will leave for the tourists, which is too bad-I barely recommend it to people who ask me where they should go. There are a lot of slow times of year in the Adirondacks and it seems that a place like Lodge should want visitors all the time. Not just the ones staying there. When you are staying there and that's your only option, fine, but if you aren't staying there it's moved way down my list, which makes me sad. read more

I think I had a one off today with my food experience. They food quality was very poor. My Campfire Chicken Soup had so much potential but the broth tasted like ocean water. The chicken dumpling soup was more of a cream of chicken, with no dumplings to be found, and last of all, the "Barn Pizza" smelled like Shrek shat on it before it was served to me. We came here for our NYE dinner instead of splurging at Artisans (the restaurant in the lodge). The atmosphere was good, although the bartender seemed pretty grumpy. This place is expensive so be prepared to spend some money - our dinner of a cheese board, caesar salad, meat spaghetti and two rounds of drinks was $145 for two people. Interesting drink menu, great decor and awesome setting (billiards, other games and fireplace seating). Would definitely come back here again! read more

The bartender was not very good and needs to be re-trained. Even the waitresses were remaking the drinks that w\had been returned from the the other diners. In a higher end bar, you should know how to make a drink and cater to your guests. Also never placed a napkin under our drinks and the bar was wet. I had to wipe it down. This guy was clueless. When we ordered food, he gave us a plate without silverware or napkins. The burger was tiny, and very rare while we asked for it to be medium. Overpriced, poor bar service. Perhaps that is why they have someone new being trained. I think this guys'd days may be numbered. read more

Have enjoyed several meals at Maggie's. Not exactly vegetarian-friendly but they do their best to accommodate. Had one meal where tiny pieces of pork were in a sauce that was an oversight but generally you can find meals to eat. The beet salad is absolutely delicious and the egg ravioli are also intriguing with the wild mushrooms. Friends have enjoyed their steak dinners and other meals with meat with no complaints. What truly makes Maggie's worth the visit, however, is the atmosphere and the wait staff who are all colorful and willing to do what it takes to make your evening spectacular. Their knowledge of the local area and the Lodge also help to create a certain magic to your evening. Lastly, the cocktails....while pricey at $15 each on average, they are worth treating yourself on. If you are in a rush, don't eat here. If you want one of the best views in all of Lake Placid while eating a leisurely lunch, eat here. This is the type of restaurant where you come for the view, not the food. My wife has ordered beet salads from one coast of the country to the other and she was disappointed by the version served here. The few beets that were served on the greens were tasteless and some of the greens were limp. I had the turkey and bacon sandwich which was good but a little pricey for what it was. Bottom line: Come here and pay willingly for the view - just don't expect great food or speedy service. read more

I would love to be able to rate this place on the merits of its food or ambience. Alas, we weren't allowed to dine there because our party contained a 10-year-old and an 8-year-old, and this PUB is so fancy that only children 12 and up can dine there. By the way, my girls are not unruly or wild, nor are they so unaccustomed to dining out that they wouldn't be able to control themselves through the brief interval of a PUB lunch. They're incredibly sophisticated diners who have enjoyed multiple-course dinners at many of Manhattan's finest restaurants, including the tasting menu at Megu, and who can discuss food with a vocabulary and depth of knowledge that would impress a professional food critic. Of course, I understand that policy is policy, and I do know that some folks don't like to dine in the presence of kids, regardless of how well behaved they are. But could you please state your policy on the sign out front on the main road instead of letting us drive 10 minutes out of our way down a country road only to be turned away like so much riff raff? read more
