We were greeted immediately upon entry and welcomed to select our own table. Menus provided and specials given verbally. This is a detail I find is often skipped these days and I truly appreciated both a paper menu and a listing of the specials verbally. We enjoyed the map mural of the peaks and so happened to sit below the portion that illustrated the peak we climbed this morning. There's a fireplace and lots of wood and branch elements which perfectly complement the stone floor. Overall it is a tasteful and not at all knick knacky Adirondack motif which is of course exactly what we're here to enjoy. The iced teas were cold and arrived unsweetened - which we loved. The soup du jour was a shrimp & crab bisque. I failed to get a pic of it due to my intrusive appetite and the amazingly delicious aroma of it- but a slice of baguette in a creamy bisque chock full of perfectly crisp shrimp and lump crab in quite a deep bowl lured me in. It was worth every bit of the $10 asking price. We did not order a cocktail but the gentleman beside us enjoyed his first and ordered the same again so it couldn't have been bad. Our main course for both of us were the Climbed a Mountain burger and they were both a true medium rare. Perfectly seasoned, it was a pleasure to bite into a brioche bun which did not overpower the burger, but truly the brightest spot in this burger which will bring me back again and again was the house made pickles in the burger. If you, like I, love a crisp, properly seasoned and pickled cucumber which adds more than just a tang of vinegar to your burger... run. Do not walk. Get yourself in here and taste for yourself. Service was friendly, prompt, never pushy and very kind. Just our kind of place and something we have not been finding in Keene of late. We will most definitely be back. Side note: the restrooms are individual and set apart from the main dining area which again is such a nice detail. They were also pleasingly decorated and scrupulously clean. read more

Came here after a full day of hiking and was starving for food. Fortunately there weren't many people at this hour so I was able to be serviced very quickly. I ordered the chili to warm me up, as well as the Mountain Burger with a side of salad. The chili was much larger than expected and came with a side of cheese cornbread. It was quite good though I personally would have added some salt and pepper. As for the burger it was very enjoyable, though possibly owing to my physically destroyed state at the time. I especially enjoyed how the buns were toasted, as well as the crispness of the toppings. The salad was quite refreshing as well. Honestly my own gripe with my meal was how expensive it ended up being; particularly the pricing of the burger in contrast to past burgers I've had. As for everything else, well as an avid hiker I really love the decor of this place and have nothing but good things to say about the service. read more

I enjoyed a wonderful lunch at Forty Six which was honestly a surprise. Previously, the limited menu had caused me to revert only to the burger. This trip was a revelation! My friend and I shared a huge salad which was fresh and perfect with our next choice, a cauliflower crusted pizza. We had extra to take home! Food was fresh, flavorful and delicious. The staff is very friendly and attentive. The atmosphere is nice and relaxed. It's a small dining area, so reservations are definitely recommend. As for the food, it was delicious! I had the roast chicken which was very flavorful and juicy. My husband had the pork chili verde and said he just could not stop eating it. The dessert was to die for! Lemon eggless custard with blueberry compote and a corn cookie. The only thing I noticed was that they did not have everything on the menu. They ran out of the Brussel sprout appetizer which was exactly what we wanted. They also had 4 desserts listed, but told us they only had 2. Of course the one I was looking at they didn't have! What a gem! Yelpers once again helped me find a truly lovely place I would never have otherwise found. Stopped here and came famished for a late lunch after hiking in the Adirondacks. The inside of the restaurant is very warm and inviting, and there's as small patio with about four tables with umbrellas and metal chairs. Service was attentive and friendly, yet unassuming. I shared the burger, fried chicken sandwich, and vegetable of the day which was bok choy. All were excellent. The burger was made from high quality local beef, and came with tomato, lettuce, and pickle on brioche, and was just perfect, well-seasoned, balanced, with a nice crispy but light char on the patty. The fried chicken sandwich came with a spicy aioli and coleslaw on brioche, and was the ideal balance of spice, crispy, tender, yet not oily. For both, my party elected for fries, and they were crispy and well-salted. The bok choy was al dente with nice browning on one side, very fresh and tasty. I'd definitely be back (and may well be later this week). read more

Be prepared to pay a pretty penny for this restaurant, because it's expensive. First the brussels sprouts were 19$ and they were too fried. Then the salad was fine not worth 15$. Next the burger and chili were good. Finally the 25$ pork chop had too much sauce and too much fat. As for the service so if you make a reservation the table, ready for you with water, menus and everything. They make the 50 decently fast, and the server was nice attentive, and recommendable. The place had comfy furniture and looked fine. I think there were decorations on the wall but I forgot. All in all just too expensive for what you get. read more

Would highly recommend this restaurant tucked away from the touristy parts of ADK in Keene. Definitely make reservations a few days in advance as it is a small dining area but very cozy. The food was amazing and we especially liked the variety as I usually don't see duck on most menus. The lamb was so tender and the sauces on both were delicious. The appetiser meat and cheese platter we got was very good and had bison meatballs and a very tasty cheese with pickled veggies. 5 stars all around! This place is exactly the kind of restaurant I LOVE to find. Farm to table, made from scratch, flavorful fine dining. My husband and I were visiting from oot and staying at the Roostercomb Inn. There aren't a lot of food options in the Keane Valley area, and Lake Placid honestly isn't worth the drive (the food there is overpriced and nothing to write home about). This place is well above the rest and really made our trip! We ate here two nights in a row, Monday & Tuesday. Quick note - they are closed on Wednesday & Thursdays and their kitchen closes around 8:30pm so plan accordingly. Monday night we just got into town and wanted some good food after eating quick & dirty the last 24 hrs. We had been eyeing Forty Six from Yelp and this place lived up to the hype! It's very cute inside & out with a good amount of tables and an outside patio as well. (No dogs allowed though) We started out with the Summer Corn Chowder to share. It was a big portion and had charred corn, potatoes, peppers, and a medley of veggies with sunflower wheat croutons. It was really delicious and thoughtfully made. For our entrees, my husband ordered the Whisky Peppercorn Steak cooked rare with White Truffle Fries and I ordered the special: Braised Short Ribs in Burgundy Sauce over Polenta with Roasted Carrots. Wow! The prices are justified, if you were wondering. The meat is locally sourced, and the Chef is very talented. My husbands Whisky Peppercorn Steak was huge and full of flavor! It was cooked to the right temp, the fries were great, and he liked the still crunchy roasted carrots. I was also soooo happy I ordered the short rib! The sauce was so good I could drink it! I almost thought the side was mashed potatoes with corn in it, till I remembered that it was polenta. I think it's the best polenta I've had, and the roasted carrots really rounded out the meal. We both had leftovers that we packaged up and enjoyed later that evening. Even reheated, it was all so good! The Chef was also kind enough to give me some extra of that Burgundy Sauce to go. Tuesday we did a 10 mile turned 13 mile hike to Indian Head & Rainbow Falls. Around 7pm we realized dinner was going to be a bust if we didn't run down the mountain, so we booked it and called them the minute we got service. They weren't able to accommodate to-go orders and their kitchen was closing at 8:30pm, so we hustled as fast as we could and made it to the restaurant around 8:05pm, putting our orders in by 8:15pm. As we waited for our food we saw multiple not-so-lucky hikers and locals be turned away, so we really were SO lucky to have made it in time! We both ordered the Mountain Burger, mine all the way with chips, and my Husbands with just cheese and fries. I asked the waitress if I could pay for a side of the Sour Cream & Chive dip, and she was able to make it happen! I actually wasn't charged for it either, which was really nice. The burgers were huge, the meat was perfectly cooked and definitely local, and we both had trouble finishing it all again - even after that long hike! Paired with a Boylan's Black Cherry, it was the perfect meal and we were so grateful. It started getting cold and buggy on the patio, so we left before getting dessert, but the waitress let us get two cookies to go. Service was also very good both times, even the hostess was so kind and helpful! This place gets busy but the staff handles it so gracefully. Overall this place was the best meal of our trip! You can tell they are so thoughtful and talented. Keane Valley is lucky to have Forty Six and we will be back to visit again soon! read more

What a gem! We must have driven past this place dozens of times. We'll, finally J and I stopped in around 5 on a Thursday (in November) so it was just us in the dining room for awhile. Both the hostess and our server were polite and personable. And the ambience is cozy and rustic but still very polished and clean. I got a bowl of the smoked tomato soup and it was a generous portion. It was delicious. If you're picky about textures, maybe opt out- it's not sieved so there are bits of tomato skin but I liked knowing that it wasn't from a can. I wish there had been more than 3 croutons cuz they were excellent. The shepherds pie was a miss for me. The mince was very very fine and made for an unappetizing texture. Also, the description said it had vegetables and I counted two pieces of identifiable carrot and one celery. The potatoes on top were nice and it was piping hot, which I appreciated. J's burger was excellent and accompanying fries were perfect. I loved the presumably housemade pickles- they are delicious and I would buy a jar of them. The only negative was the brioche bun which seemed tough and almost chewy, like it had been thawed in a microwave. Dessert was amazing. The apple crumble was hot, the apples were soft and the top was so tasty. The ice cream was a generous scoop. The pumpkin bread pudding was so beautifully plated and had a lovely texture. 1 bottled lemonade, two entrees, one soup, two desserts- $78 before tip. I had never visited the popular cafe that used to occupy this spot, but I like what's going on now. My trips through Keene are in the daytime when there is a short, smart lunch menu featuring sandwiches and small plates. Service was quick and pleasant. I had a house-smoked brisket sandwich, which comes with melted cheese and tomato jam. I usually like my brisket unadorned but this combo worked well. They subbed a house salad for the fries, which was a good choice. On the server's advice I tried the apple sage dressing, a bit creamy and sweet but not too much. Recommended. The other diners were on their way to or from hikes or other outdoor adventures and this was a good spot to take a load off and refuel. We were about the only people in here but the waitress took care of our smelly hikey selves so well. After our hike, we came here for the "I just climbed a mountain" burger and it was delicious and cooked to order, while the fries the burger came with were even better. The $10 appetizer of the mac and cheese was a huge portion as well and we enjoyed sharing it before the burger came out. I would definitely recommend this place! Today, I learned that you wear the badge of honor of a forty-sixer if you've climbed all 46 high peak mountains in the area. A mountain has to be at least 4,000 ft high in elevation to be considered high peak. What a treat to come to this place after climbing! That cheeseburger was heavenly! The meat was perfectly cooked, pickles and onions were thinly sliced so all the flavors meshed together. It wasn't too big so I was able to enjoy every bite. The fries were also out of this world. The Kohlrabi was fantastic -- curry-forward and bathing with greens in a flavorful sauce. The mac and cheese was a tad overpriced, although flawless -- pasta wasn't mushy, bacon, peas -- and it came in a small cast iron crock. The entrees were very good. The lamb was perfectly cooked, the steak was, too. The former was presented well, and the steak was plopped on the plate. However, presentation does not detract from the taste. Cozy Adirondack experience with chef quality food using fresh local ingredients coming from their kitchen. Started with the homemade chips and dip definitively worth ordering. My Pop ordered the spinach tortellini soup which was outrageously good. I ordered the duck break which was delightful, served medium rare with great flavor. Accompanied by roasted fingerling potatoes and asparagus also delicious. Pop ordered the lamb shank special which was accompanied by lentils and white rice. The portion was enough for two and the flavors were simply comforting, meat falling off the bone. For dessert we ordered a corn bread pudding topped with house made blueberry ice cream. The corn bread warm and sweet with the cool slightly tart blueberry ice cream was sensational. Reasonably priced with a stellar meal for the area. We've gotten contactless curbside the last few times we've been in the area because we have an immunocompromised kid and they've been so amazingly accommodating despite most places going back to normal. This restaurant is the former home of the beloved ADK Cafe, which suddenly closed in early 2018. The new management and staff had a high bar to clear and they've done it. The service is excellent, interior is nice, and there's outside seating, too. The food is also excellent, with a goodly amount of attention shown for vegetarians. Their hummus is probably the best I've ever had, anywhere. The veggie burger was also quite good. Lots of beverage choices and desserts, good parking, this place is a gem. read more
