Certain things to get here that won't disappoint. The sesame noodles are great , taste like homemade noodles. Cheap too! The 3 cup flounder is fresh and excellent with a wonderfully, flavorful sauce with hot peppers and thai basil, but the sweetness cuts the heat in a perfect way, not too sweet. Love their chinese vegetable choices...chinese broccoli, bok choy, greens like in Chinatown. Can be very authentic if you order right. Great chinese appetizers and good sushi. I am outraged. This place is disgusting. Over priced and terrible quality food. Mold on the bowls. Manager yelled at me for asking to get my soup taken off from the the bill since there was mold and dirt on it. Very disappointed. Customer service is terrible. Staff is rude and ignorant. This place has disappointed me extremely. I used to be a huge fan until my horrible experience... bowls were dirty, hair in my rice and dust/mold in our soup bowls. Epic fail. Waited for our food for an hour and gave up trying to get dinner. 20+ minutes to get an iced tea. Both the siu mai and sesame noodle appetizers were good but they use an udon noodle which makes for a very different texture. The kids' French fries were also good. Skinny like McD's. We used to order from the typical Chinese take-out restaurants in our town but Baumgarts is a whole new level of amazing Chinese food with the added bonus of unique menu options that offers something for just about everyone. We love their Gluten-free Sesame Chicken & General Tso's Chicken, their Broccoli Asian Slaw/Salad & Roast Pork Lo-Mein (it's to die for!). In appearance it looks like a diner with an old fashioned ice cream parlor counter but when you get to the menu you might think you just walked into a Chinese, Japanese or Thai restaurant. The menu has some basic American comfort foods and I guess Asian comfort foods as wells. I was very surprised when I saw the menu. I couldn't decide between the dim sum, quesadilla, and cheese burger. I ended up with the special of the day crispy duck buns. My friend got the quesadillas and they were good but when we asked the server for some sour cream I think she wasn't sure what that was or if they had it. The duck was excellent. The server seemed a bit confused when it came to dessert too. She had no idea what ice cream toppings they had and didn't have, but she got the order right so all was good. Overall it was a nice friendly place to eat. Definitely a place you can bring kids to and all could find something good to eat. read more

Had the food here once and altho i wasn't grossed out by any means, my wife and I were looking at each other and telling each other that this isn't real Chinese food. People, if you want authentic Chinese food, this place is not for you. This is a standby favorite. Good chinese food that's fairly inexpensive and very good ice cream. On some Friday and Saturday evenings the wait can be long-ish and they do not take reservations. This place serves no beer, wine or liquor. Anyone who is familiar with dining in Bergen county where many many places are BYOB or Yelp where one can check to see if it's a BYOB place can't gripe about no liquor license. There's a deck off the back of the 2nd story for dininfg during the warmer months. It's pretty nice since one is not on the sidewalk right next to both pedestrian and vehicular traffic. read more

We have not been in quite awhile. We were rushed to order. When we said we were not ready to order, the server asked is we were waiting for another person. Menu is extensive - Chinese, Thai and sushi - sashimi. My husband had wonton soup - okay not great. I had chicken satay - but the chicken was a bit dry and you could hardly get the bamboo skewer out - dipping sauce was nice. My husbands crispy sesame beef over broccoli - too much breading and TOO sweet. I have crispy mango chicken. Also too much breading over lettuce with a few slices of mango - bland and over cooked. Asked for brown rice and got white. Asked for water and the check. Got the check and had to ask two more times for water. When we got home I had a terrible headache - do they use MSG? PS. For untrained pallate decent food, but I was disappointed in my dish. I asked for the helalthy option plate and food was bland. They did not have hot pepper flakes instead giving me a chili sauce, which the vinegars threw the taste of the dish off. Chicken breast seemed to be coated in batter when it did not need to be. Ridgewood is a wok in a soda shoppe. Edgewater offers killer view of NYC skyline. Either way, the menu offers many fine choices. Soups are packed with flavor. Duck Crepe to start were packed with flavor and everyone at the table wanted one of the four sections. Spooned the Plum Sauce over a stolen Pork Dumpling. Absolutely Fantastic Fish really is! Every selection is flavorful and well prepared. I usually go for the Heart Healthy Selection with shrimp, brown garlic sauce and a choice of three vegetables, which depend upon my mood. Had the Shrimp with Spinach over Mai Fun Noodle special and have my new favorite dish, particularly over the enjoyable broth. Very child friendly and generous portions make for a family value. Leave room for desert. Some regulars might think is not as unique as it once seemed, but my family will be back again and again. read more

So, the decor at Baumgart's is a little questionable. It looks like the inside of diner. I was almost a little afraid when we went in. However, the Chinese food was surprisingly VERY VERY delicious. For appetizers we shared the house dumplings and the peanut butter flavored won-tons. Both were very yummy. My girlfriends both had the sesame chicken dish (which I tried, which was DELICIOUS). While I opted for healthier fare (they have a page dedicated to make your own healthy entree ++). My dish was also delicious. The place is BYOB which is kind of strange given the atmosphere but also a plus. I'd definitely recommend this place for a sit down Chinese meal. read more

Surprised by all of the negative comments. Baumgart's is not your traditional Chinese restaurant, but that's part of what makes it so great. Where else can you get a dumpling appetizer, followed by a chicken salad sandwich, topped off with an outstanding sundae for dessert? The pan fried house dumplings are terrific and my kids favorite. After a mediocre experience at their Livingston (NJ) location for lunch, figured I'd give dinner a try in Ridgewood. It always looks busy, and I've heard how good it was. Big surprise, it sucked. Bad food, bad service, cheesy decor, and overpriced to boot. For me and two kids, 60 bucks. Yikes. Really odd place, with American, Chinese, and sushi, none done particularly well. I had a mango salad and a Crazy tuna sushi roll. The salad seemed bone dry, although they swore that it had 'dressing' on it. And it came last. Huh? Even my kids' meals were lousy. How do you screw up a kid's grilled cheese and fries? Well, you don't grill the cheese - you apparently toast it dry. And then you undercook some frozen fries. I don't get it. I'm guessing that people like it because there's something for everyone (there were a lot of families with kids there), but it's clearly the lowest common denominator of food. read more

We were celebrating a family birthday on a busy Saturday afternoon.. Decided to go to Baumgarts because of the variety of their menu and ease of parking. However the service was poor. Not only did the waiter bring the wrong iced tea, but what was really unacceptable was that he brought out each person's order at a different time! That really ruined our enjoyment of the meal, even though the food itself was quite good. My guest also missed not being able to order a beer with her lunch. Horrible, rude service" Went for dinner six months ago with two girlfriends. We were seated upstairs. Although the food was very good, the service was very rushed. There were other diners eating, but we were told at 8 :30 pm they needed to clean up the upstairs and handed us the check. We paid and left a 15% tip. The waitress came over and said in a very nasty tone, you did not leave enough. I dined with my husband and our friends at the Englewood location in January and February. The food and service we're wonderful. Our group of 8 went to the Ridgewood location in March. First they didn't have our reservation. We were seated upstairs and almost immediately the rudest waitress started to yell when we asked for ice. The manager came up who spoke to us like they were doing is a favor by allowing us to dine there. We all got up and left. They yelled at us as we walked out. DO not eat here. Everything was fine until I went to pay. I was with a party and we needed to split the check for one check per person and the waitress gave us the biggest attitude saying it couldn't be done even though we have done the same thing many times before. She continues to scold us on how we should have told her first and how this was very annoying and an inconvenience to her. I was told the wait would be 15 minutes so we gave one of the hostess' our name and sat by the ice cream / bar area, only feet away from the hostess station and we watched people get seated before us. The food was shockingly delicious, would've never expected excellent Chinese food from what appears to be an old fashioned American diner. We had vegetable steamed dumplings (sauce was on point and the dumplings had a very thin dough which was perfect). I had sesame chicken, so good! Definitely one of the best Chinese restaurants in the area. Their General Tsos and specialty shrimp dishes are very good. Sushi is pretty good but not always consistent. If I want good consistent sushi I will go to Sakura Bana right down the street. Their homemade ice cream is pretty good, worth a try for dessert or take out. read more

We went last night and the service was atrocious. My meal came out, and then my husband and one of my daughter's meals came out 5 minutes later, and then my other daughter's meal came out 5 minutes after that. We complained and they didn't do anything to rectify the situation. So then we asked for a discount and they gave us a 10% discount ($7.50) which was laughable. I hate Baumgarts! I live in Ridgewood and have ordered from Baumgarts, because, lets face it...there are no good Chinese restaurants in town (Ivangi I miss you!) It is mediocre at best. The service is awful. But after this evening I would rather eat cereal for dinner than ever order from them again. I ordered take out and my husband picked it up. When he got home, the beef and broccoli was only broccoli. We called them and the woman decided she was going to spend the next time minutes arguing with us about how she was pretty sure we had only ordered broccoli. HELLOOO??? You think my kids will eat five pounds of broccoli? Check my order history going back 15 years! Beef and broccoli!!! Massive menu combining various Asian cuisines and ice cream parlor desserts. Sushi, Chinese, Thai, and sundaes with home made ice cream. Cakes, pies, and cheeseburgers. There is something for everyone. Food is always solid, sometimes outstanding, sometimes average, but consistently better than average. Casual atmosphere and no need to get dressed up which is nice. They are family friendly and it's easy to get a table without a reservation. The parking lot is small so you can't always get a spot if it's crowded, but for Ridgewood it's great. The only negative comments would be it can get loud there and your cloths will smell like Chinese food when you leave. But that doesn't stop us from going, just don't where your favorite sweater or coat. read more
