I love this hardware store. And I don't like hardware stores. Their wayfinding technique is very user friendly. It's a person and today she not only knew where everything was that I needed, she was also serving BBQ. Take that Google. I wish I could take them to Chicago with me. Super friendly staff that knows what they're talking about. Despite the higher costs, I've come to prefer Bates Ace over Home Depot just for the simplicity and convenience of shopping there. Also love how dog-friendly they are. Great shopping experience all-in-all. read more

Wow! I feel like this is a hidden gem in the midtown area. Exceptional, efficient service. Right when I walked in, I was greeted by an employee who made sure to direct me to where I needed to go for the item I was looking for. I was given 3 aisles to look in, but as I headed toward one of the aisles, another employee had been informed of my need and directed me right to the product. Talk about excellent communication among employees! Prices are great, too! In and out of the store in 5 minutes. Plus, plenty of free parking in their own lot. read more

Today my brother and I went to get succulents for our apartment. Upon walking into the greenhouse, we were told by what seemed an impatient clerk not to go into the back, as if we were children who needed to be looked after. After that, our whole experience felt like we were being monitored. When we got to the checkout line, we were greeted with more impatience. Succulents were great, but the environment felt hostile. I've got to say, this place was a totally different experience then a Home Depot or Lowe's. Everyone was friendly and the service was incredible. Can you imagine just having a conversation with the paint guy without 10 customers looking annoyed that you are holding-up their day? Oh wow who knew that ACE Hardware had so much cute stuff?!?!?! I stopped in for a toilet flusher (sexy, I know...) and left with a little red flyer wagon, some Christmas cards @ 60% off, AND my toilet flusher handle thing...but I could have spent so much more time in there! And maybe it was just like a Saturday thing...or the beginning of the holidays thing...but they actually had FRESH baked chocolate chip cookies and coffee for everyone...and the cookies were still warm! It was a really delightful shopping experience and I was looking for something a little less "orange" after all of my trips to Home Depot over the past six weeks. So I'm giving this place 3 stars SOLELY on the fact that they have employees (with/without a happy demeanor) stationed to help whenever needed. I did not know that Ace was priced higher than other hardware places. Had I known this, I would have driven my ass a few more miles to a Walmart. I needed paint to cover my apartment walls back to their original color. Yeah ummm maybe I'm a bit naive to the home decor world, but I damn sure didn't plan on paying $25 a bucket on eggshell colored paint!! I didn't realize the price until it was time to pay, and I was too embarrassed to tell the cashier never mind. In all for paint and a few other things that I needed to get my apartment inspection ready, I paid around $120. Umm yeah I was pretty pissed. I will never go to Ace again. I receive the same amount of customer service from Home Depot. I'll take my cheap ass back there from now on. read more

Easy online & store pick up BUT, if you return an online item, they only offer store credit vs. a refund! Compared to many other stores that offer store pick up where I've shopped (Lowe's, Macy's, Wal-Mart, Kohl's), I find this return policy absurd. read more

I went there to see if I could get a carburetor for a 25 year old lawn tractor. Its old, but not at all rare. They told me they could order it and it would be $150. I got it, an air filter, spark plug, fuel shutoff valve and fuel filter for $23 online. Same part number. I knew what I could get it for before I went there, but wanted to support local business if I could and was prepared to pay $40 or $50 so I could have it and work on my tractor over the weekend, but REALLY, $150!? Shirley runs the counter and is great, but I just don't understand the parts pricing. read more

Wouldn't allow me to return an item because the packaging was damaged even though the product itself was NOT. How does one open a package without damaging it? Isn't the reason for packaging to take the beating in order to protect the product? Cashier tried to argue with me that there was no reason why the product did not fit my face. Complete ignorance as she & I are different ethnicities with completely different bone structures. How are YOU going to tell me what does or doesn't fit MY face? And the reason is completely irrelevant if the product is perfectly entact. So, Ace Corporation is haggling over a product, which they bought for probably $8, not because the product was damaged but because the $0.50 packaging was?! Nice. read more

Arrived at the store on New Years' Eve to purchase some cleaning items and to look at landscape lighting for my home. Your greeter at the door (was a lady, don't have her name) was very pushy and not very helpful or friendly. When I was able to find what I needed, I asked her a question regarding the size of the package and was told brusquely that it was the only size available. Not a very nice experience, but then went to the checkout and paid for my items. I walked across the street to another business to find out some information for a work related issue, when I noticed the manager walked over to the building, and complained about my car being parked. I was also berated for parking at your store when I explained to him I was a customer. I was also told rudely that "the management doesn't care about my complaint and they won't help", even though I explained to him again that I was a customer. He only asked afterward if I had bought something and then showed him my receipt. He apologetically said after that "he didn't know". The business I went to and work for seems to have a stigma attached to them as a nuisance, but you should know that people who work for them are tax paying, hard working people who could potentially help bring more business, as they also come in contact with other business owners and professionals in the community. I had considered purchasing landscape lighting from your store, but given this experience, I will NEVER shop there again and will post this review (copied and pasted) on Google, Yelp, and other business reviewing sites to get the word out about my poor customer experience. read more

I frequented this store for the first three months that I lived in Atlanta. The staff was generally very nice and the store itself has lots of inventory at competitive prices. I was hoping to be a regular shopper here. However, during my last trip to Bates' Ace, I had a bad experience with one of the store's employees. This young employee walked by me a couple of times without asking if I needed help (which I wouldn't think was bad if he was in the middle of another job, but he didn't seem to be busy). Then, when I asked him to help me find a scoring tool for acrylic sheet, he seemed rather annoyed and wouldn't even look in my direction when I was talking to him. I purchased the items I'd collected and left the store without searching for that scoring tool. I submitted a complaint about the incident to the store manager via email, which said he'd follow up on, but I never heard back from him. I hated to stop shopping at an otherwise nice store, but with Walmart and Home Depot not too far away (and Amazon), I decided to take my business elsewhere. I've tried many, many times to support this store because I live nearby and believe in supporting your community. However, on several different occasions, the customer service has been horrible! Furthermore, I do not like being attacked by a greeter as soon as I walk in the door asking me, "what am I looking for?" I would prefer their greeter be at the register to get people out so they don't have to wait in long lines. Went there on Sunday to purchase a new dead-bolt lock and have it re-keyed to work with my current house key. When i returned to my house, I noticed the key not only didn't work but wasn't even a close copy of my existing house key. Went back today to have it fixed and the key guy was very salty. Additionally, not once did anyone in the store apologize for the mistake or time required by me to remedy it. Finally, I had an additional key made for my house and the new lock, which didn't work either. Had to pay to have another additional key made even though they messed-up the first one. Too many fish in the sea - go to another Ace or hardware chain altogether. read more

Disappointing service. Always enjoyed going to this place for the past 7 years of being in the neighborhood, as they greet you at the door and try to help you immediately. Its more expensive, but they generally know where things are and its convenient. Unfortunately, I think that is all an act. A few days after Christmas, I went with my father in law to exchange a present I purchased for him there. Had the receipt. Just wanted to switch something out that he already had for something of the same exact value. Because I had used an online coupon, the associate wouldn't do it. Literally switch one $60 thing for another. Perfect condition, never been opened. Not asking for a refund or anything. He refused. I asked to speak to the manager and he said the same thing. Said " I'm not suppose to do this" and " I don't make the rules". Great customer service. Im standing there in line with people behind me, including my father in law whose present this is, and the manager is being obtuse and unhelpful. I told him I'm there all the time, which I am, and would appreciate his help. Then he says, "well I guess this once I will do it" in a tone that would make anyone feel awful for asking. After this big ordeal, now I'm the bad guy. Im pretty irked at this point and just tell the manager to forget it. I didn't want a some big favor, I just wanted good customer service. if they want to argue about it and make me fell bad, then they loose my business. I pay for the other item in full and leave. So today, i Asked my wife to swing by home depot today to pick up some ice melt. Since she was right by Bates Ace, she went in there. They made her pre pay for the ice melt and said to come back when the truck delivered it was 2pm. Go back, no ice melt. So I go by there after work at 6pm. Still no ice melt, one story about why the truck was late from one associate and another story from another associate. No apology, in fact, just a rude associate telling me three times in a row to "go talk to the manager" before just walking away. So again, I leave with no ice melt. My wife has to drive back up there at 7pm to pick it up. No apology for the hassle, no thank you for your business. just another rude associate at the door saying "go get in line". It's really too bad that this place can't be a great neighborhood hardware store. That takes care of its long term customers. read more

I'm a fan of Ace in general, but this store is a pleasure. The staff are friendly and knowledgeable, but not overbearing. The store is well stocked, and someone is always willing to give you some advise. Unlike at a Home Depot or Lowes, I actually believe the person is telling me his/her honest opinion, rather than just pushing certain items. This Ace has a lovely garden section, though it's not very large. They only seem to keep a few of each plant at a time, so the selection rotates fairly quickly. The same can be said for the pottery/planters. Before I leave I always make sure to take a quick look at their "quirky" section. Local honey and pickles, along with cute artsy garden/home items. read more

The whole spiel of Ace Hardware is that they offer you a personalized experience. Overall, buying is not a problem. Be careful if you need to return items though. It took me half an hour to return a five items, four people standing around the register, and holding up so many other people. First, they didn't return all the items, then at the end they couldn't return one last item due to the system. The manager tried saying, well, it's because it's not on the receipt, I then pointed out to him, and he told me that they couldn't find the code, when I offered to go look for the same item in the back, he finally decided to figure it out. The new worker was nice and apologized but no apology from the manager, who had an attitude of "well, it just won't work and we can't do anything about it (and we really don't want to try) when it is their fault for not inputting it right in the beginning. I think I'll make the extra trek to Home Depot next time... read more

I Just moved into Berkeley park around the corner from this store and I consider myself one lucky homeowner! The thought of going to Home Depot gives me hives. Thy never have what I need and you have to set off fireworks to get attention from an associate. Bates Ace Hardware is a fraction of the size yet they seem to have just about every thing I need. The staff is friendly and knowledgeable and they know me by name now. It's such a contrast to what I've become accustomed to in the behemoth home improvement stores. Bravo read more

Wow, I'm surprised there hasn't been a review written. OK, the inside staff are great, 4 star great, but the lawn mower repair staff are ZERO. Took my lawn mower in for service and was told 2 weeks. 30 days later, still getting told at least 2 more weeks so I took my lawn mower back. During the last 30 days I attempted phone calls and either no answer of the ringing phone or some one would just lift the phone up and then hang up. Going in person to check and no one there (it's located under the store), just rows & rows of equipment to be repaired. When I asked for the lawn mower back, the clerk tried to tell me that they (Bates) had only had the lawn mower for 2 weeks instead of the 30 days of record ! Oh, the same clerk said that Bates Commercial Customers get serviced first. read more
