If you're renovating your home, Lifecycle is a place you definitely need to check out. First, if you have things to demo and remove from your home, they're a great place to donate construction materials. Secondly, if you need to purchase discounted construction materials, check this place out first. I'm renovating my 1960s midcentury modern home, and I needed to buy some doors. Because I'm fancy, I wanted quality, wooden doors with lots of glass on them. Other wooden doors at my home, I've had custom made. And they've irritatingly cost a lot of money. The more glass that's used in the door, the higher the cost. And if you want to use quality, heavy mahogany wood? That's even more money. So, I visited Lifecycle recently and I found twobeautiful vintage wooden doors, with heavy glass. These are the types of quality doors, that were crafted with the type of workmanship that you don't find often, anymore. It's absolutely obnoxious to deal with LBC as a donor. They only accept donations by appointment. I sent in photos and got an appointment. After loading my truck and driving to LBC, I was greeted by a completely incompetent worker. They were speaking in a whisper and I could barely understand what they were saying, what they wanted me to do, or if they were even speaking with me. They rejected my donations of 100+ year old architectural elements because they were in less than perfect condition (shocker). This was a massive waste of time. I'll skip the effort next time and send these items to the dump. read more

The Lifecycle Building Center is a relatively young, local non-profit organization whose main goal is to make each phase of a building's life more efficient and sustainable. This is achieved by the reuse and resale of bulk building materials. Over the last five-plus years, nearly 500,000 pounds of materials have been diverted from landfills thanks to the LBC. Talk about green. The LBC makes these materials available to schools and non-profits for free and to the general public at deep discounts. I attended an LBC fundraising event at Opera Nightclub (a.k.a. "The Atlanta Event Center at Opera") less than a couple weeks ago. It was entitled "RE:Purpose, A Lifecycle Celebration" (http://www.yelp.com/events/atlanta-re-purpose-a-lifecycle-celebration-2). There was live music, drinks & food galore, and a silent auction was held. I had a good time and never knew Opera could be used for events other than clubbing and EDM concerts. The venue is actually quite nice and surprisingly clean under bright lights, though the upstairs VIP area still stinks. Restaurants and vendors who donated food to the event included: JCT. Speaking of food, I saw a video on the main stage of Jim Stacy, chef/owner of Pallookaville Fine Foods in Avondale Estates. He spoke about the LBC and the reclaimed materials he's used in his restaurant. Very cool. The silent auction looked to be a success. Various items were up for bid, mostly art. Biddable items included wine racks, a pair of steampunk-themed lamps, furniture, jewelry, gift certificates, a rock climbing class, a cooking class, a night's stay at The Inn at Serenbe, and SunTrust Club tickets to a Braves game. While I didn't win anything, my friends ended up winning several items. While I've known about the LBC for years, this event was my first in-person introduction to the LBC and the passionate people behind it. I think what they are doing for the community and the environment is great and I support their cause. read more

Lifecycle Building Center is one of those places that you hear about, sounds great, but you never really "get" until you visit. And once you do, you wonder why you didn't earlier. A must visit for all building, construction, repair, or just adventure. Better prices than you'll find anywhere if they have something you need or want. Also an incredible service for those who have anything to pass on rather than sending it to the landfill. Would ANYONE find it valuable? Why toss it when LBC will help redeploy it to someone to help save them money or even donate to school or charity. That's right! School and charities can get things FREE here! And you donating and/or shopping here supports that cause. This place is great. The people who run it are amazing. This place needs to grow and become a huge asset for Atlanta and our community. Go there! I needed an 8 foot white board, preferably magnetic as well. The office and facilities team told me to just order from Office Depot. Best price was more than $500 but not magnetic; that would be more than $700. I got it from LBC, DELIVERED for less than $100. Magnetic! I love this place soooo much. I deplore the "tear down and build a McMansion where a perfectly decent house used to stand" ethos of Atlanta. But so far, I haven't been able to change it. Fortunately, this gritty but great place exists to recycle the house pieces and parts that come from those teardowns and possibly overstocks, etc. Just come here, okay? My hands hurt right now so don't make me go on. There is unique stuff that you won't find elsewhere. Some of it is vintage, some is so new you wonder how the heck is someone done with it already. Whatever. Come with an open mind and wear your sturdy clothes, and just see what you find. You'll save money, get great stuff for your remodeling project, and be recycling good stuff all at the same time. My only negative is this: they aren't open all the time. It's run by volunteers, it's a non-profit, so do check their website and maybe call too before you go to avoid a fruitless trip. Other than that, this place is wonderful! This is a cool spot if you have some free time and want to browse the most random stuff ever. It's really a DIY'ers/contractor's yard sale or flea market. I personally think they are over priced a bit, but you never know what you are going to find in here. Don't go in here thinking it's going to be super organized. Disclaimer: My husband is on the Board of Directors. Yesterday was the public dedication of the LBC, a new non-profit organization focused on the recycle/reuse of bulk construction materials. The organization is under the blanket of the US Green Building Council - Georgia Chapter (http://www.usgbcga.org/), and they're closely working with Southface (http://www.southface.org/). According to their executive director at the launch, Atlanta is the only major metropolitan area in the country without this kind of organization, so it's about time we had one. One of the tenants of sustainable building is using existing spaces as much as possible, and when that's not possible, deconstructing those spaces in a way that the materials can be reused. That's what the LBC will do - partner with architects and construction managers to ensure that any demolition is actually planned and organized deconstruction such that the materials are collected, and then put into this warehouse. People can then come to the warehouse to select these previously used materials for their construction projects. As someone whose father can't possibly throw away even a 6" block of a 2x4, the idea speaks to a basic belief in me that can't throw anything away that someone else might be able to use. Touring the warehouse yesterday, they've got a lot of wooden cabinets that used to be in CDC labs, cool desk lamps, a leftover bar from a TGI Fridays, a plethora of whiteboards (including an executive one that's got faux cherry wood doors with tack board space on the inside), filing cabinets, bookshelves, even pallets of bricks. I have my eye on some of the cabinets from the CDC labs, even if they are labeled "E. coli samples". I'm sure my mother-in-law will love that I've got those around her grandson... but seriously there are some nice wood cabinets that will look great in our mid-century themed home office, and for prices that I'm willing to pay ($60-100 per module). They're open by appointment, primarily catering to construction managers, and artist who work with previously used materials. If you're the volunteer sort, and you're interested in construction, they're looking for volunteers to help deconstruct and then sort the materials at the warehouse. Everything they've got so far is due to volunteer support. I'm both a LBC donor and customer. I picked up some tile for a shower project and carpet tile for the basement office. Also dropped off some flex duct and lumber I was done with. As a pack rat in need of a purge, it was great to be able to take stuff to a place where someone who needed it could find it and put it to good use. Not only can you save a lot money on gently used materials, but your support of LBC helps keep these same materials from taking up space in landfills. We stopped by last weekend, I'd never been and was curious what they had to offer (a lot of cool salvaged and left over building supplies, plus some interesting miscellany!). We ended up buying some nice porcelain tile for our renovation, that would have cost us 4x more at the big box chain! I'm sure their selection varies wildly from day to day, but it's definitely worth the trip if you're not in a rush, and you're willing to poke around a bit. Bought the exact bookshelf I have been looking for at Lifecycle Building Center yesterday. Great condition. Was a bit dusty but nothing 3 minutes of dusting couldn't take care of. Only spent $30 and carried it home same day. I loved how I was able to find exactly what I wanted and felt GREAT that the money I spent went to a great cause. I wish Atlantan's used business like this to help with reuse practices. I had a great experience. Was in and out. The staff was super helpful and I was only there about 30 minutes. I will definitely go back for any future projects. I wish more people would donate more items so that less items would end up at landfills. I am also now interested in finding more about what can be donated. I'm an apartment dweller and will soon be a homeowner. Once I start homeowner type projects I am sure I will be a frequenter. read more

Lifecycle has great reclaimed building materials...cabinets, doors, tables, lighting, fixtures, and other great stuff! (Sorta like Habitat for Humanity but with more commercial, less residential wares). Lots of cool stuff for use as props or set decorating, too. High quality of materials for more refined jobs and lower quality for when ya just need to get it done and looks don't matter. Finally, a building materials reuse center in Atlanta! I was pleasantly surprised to see the wide variety of materials the Lifecycle Building Center (LBC) has to offer. They have close to 40,000 square feet of warehouse filled with a little bit of everything: floor tile, kitchen cabinets, plywood, bathroom fixtures, hardwood flooring, book shelves, wood doors, windows, lighting fixtures, mantles, HVAC equipment, church pews, electrical outlets, junction boxes, brick pavers, storage bins, a Viking double oven, ductwork, wall treatments, etc. The pricing is great; the Director of Operations (Adam) indicated the pricing model is 50% of retail or less. Adam also gives great tips on how to improve the efficiency of your home; they even offer home performance improvement classes! I went to LBC the other day in search of a wrought iron gate or door to place in my garden for climbing roses and vines. Adam was really helpful and located some old burglar bars that were perfect for me. I loved being able to get something that is not at every Home Depot, and the bonus was being able to support an organization that keeps so much re-usable stuff out of the landfill. Lots of cool old vintage looking mantles and doors but lots of new stuff too. It is huge facility and well worth a walk-through. Highly recommend for do-it-yourselfers and creative types who can see alternate uses for everyday items. I want to go back and make a planter out of an old pedestal sink! read more

They offer a wide array of materials, at super discounted prices -- at least 50% off what it would be at Home Depot (and you can look up the price at Home Depot and compare if you think their price is too high - they will change it to be half the Home Depot price). Super helpful staff! I was looking for some piping material for a community garden project, and was given great advice about which materials would work best. We had a GREAT time at the recent LBC pallet workshop. The volunteers at LBC taught me how to make a barstool out of used pallets - what a fun project! Everyone was so helpful, and it really inspired me to get more creative. Wow! For a mere $30, I just bought an amazing 48 inch bathroom vanity from Lifecycle! The guys there were so amazingly helpful! When I told them my plan was to add bun feet I got from a yard sale and a white carrara marble countertop and sink I got from craigslist, they went way beyond the extra mile and cut the "kickplate" off for me for only $5, gave me some free birch veneer, and threw in some 2 by 4s they cut to size which I will use to reinforce the base. A similar vanity (without counter, sink or faucet), which I had been thinking about buying was $678! This place rocks!!!!!!!! read more
