I'm a fan of Shep's Midtown Ace and Ace Hardware stores in general. As opposed to big box home improvement retailers like Home Depot and Lowe's, Ace stores are smaller and really exude a more genuine and authentic neighborhood feel. Generally, I've found the folks at Ace to be more accessible, knowledgeable, and helpful than those at the bigger stores. Shep's Midtown Ace is no exception. Shep's Midtown Ace opened in January 2015. I watched from across the street, from inside my dentist's office, as this place came together. It's certainly one of the nicest-looking Ace stores I've seen to date, especially in terms of its facade. Like other urban and in-town Ace stores, they efficiently pack a lot of useful inventory into the store. This one has two levels. The store is located at the corner of Juniper and 7th. Free parking is located inside the deck next door. Enter via Juniper. You don't need to enter any of the gated areas inside the deck. There are street-level spots reserved for Ace customers that will be on your right just after entering the deck. You don't need to grab a parking ticket or anything. I came here needing a tool to replace a recessed light bulb in a high/vaulted ceiling (about 14 feet high). Shortly after I entered the store, an employee greeted me and asked me if I needed help finding anything. I told him what I needed and he told me exactly where I could find it in the lighting section upstairs. The bulb changing kit has a telescoping pole that extends to 11 feet and three attachments: one for recessed and track lighting (a suction), one for standard incandescent bulbs, and one for floodlights. It cost $27.21 after tax which I thought was a little pricey, but not excessive (otherwise, I wouldn't have bought it). I was satisfied with my experience and will definitely return. I like this and the other Ace Hardware near me (Bates Ace Hardware on Howell Mill) about the same. They're both good. read more

I have been to Shep's Ace a few times now since I moved in nearby. Every time I come in somebody greets me near the door and asks if I have any questions or need help finding anything. I recently went in for advice on how to mount a tv into metal studs and Mark talked me through the different options I had and gave me his recommendations afterwards - it was all I could've asked for and more. Why do I always leave Home Depot fatigued? Like I have just finished some endurance challenge and my prize is a Flat head screw driver? The expert level game of hide and seek for employee assistance is almost comical. If you, like myself, don't have the energy to take on the Home Depot Spartan challenge while buying a $3 light bulb Ace is your place.... Genuine mom and pop style customer service makes up for any price increase you may need to pay. Somehow this little hardware store manages to always have what I am looking for. An employee is not only always on standby ready to direct me to my item they also have the knowledge to tell me that's not really the item I need. While ace is walkable to all of midtown there is also covered parking. The Starbucks across the lot always provides the caffeinated confidence needed to tackle the most challenging of IKEA assembly projects. They sell great hammers for disassembly as well... read more

The gentlemen that work here were so nice. I love when you enter an establishment and are welcomed immediately. I came there to get a key cut and unfortunately the key I had needed to be ordered online from a separate place. The gentleman who helped me was so gracious and looked up the key for me. I've been coming to this location for the last 6 years. It's more expensive and selection is limited, but regardless, I've been choosing to support a local business over the big-box competitors. Not anymore. I spent $140 on some items for a home project in mid-March right as we were entering "pandemic-mode" and doing the whole shelter-in-place routine. However, one of the items didn't work for my project, so I was planning to return it, but again, we were in the middle of a GLOBAL PANDEMIC. Fast-forward to mid-May, and I needed some items that I knew Shep's Ace would have, so I thought I'd kill two birds with one stone -- purchase my new items (about $25 worth of stuff) and return the $8 UNOPENED item from March. Except Shep's Ace wouldn't let me return the item for a refund because I purchased it over 30 days ago. Hello, extenuating circumstances?? Global pandemic? The city has been shut down?? Residents have been advised to stay at home unless completely necessary?? Still, nope. Owner policy. No returns over 30 days. Guess what, Shep? Not only did I not spend money in your store today (which would have been well over the amount of the returned item), you will no longer get my business, which I'm guessing would've been thousands of dollars over the coming years. Congratulations -- your unyielding policy during extraordinary circumstances just cost you way more in lost business today and in the future. read more

Take anywhere else, head of time and just make sure they have what you need but, definitely come and support this local neighborhood midtown location! Whether it was fighting a gnat infestation spawned from the old soil in one of my desk plants or mitigating my dog's diarrhea damage to my Chinese rug after consuming large chunks of marinated pork belly, like the Ewoks were to the Rebel Alliance in defeating The Empire, Ace Hardware has been there for me through so many battles. (Here's my review for another location: http://bit.ly/1IYVHMZ.) And like in the past, Ace had my back, again, for the biggest task of them all: getting settled in Atlanta. My girlfriend and I dropped by this Ace Hardware to copy our house key, and we ended up staying longer than planned because we couldn't help ourselves from gazing at this location's marvelous space. In contrast to other spectacular Ace Hardwares, this one is a lot more airy, has two levels, and WILL BE OPENING AN ICE CREAM SHOP IN SEVERAL MONTHS. Lol. This is in addition to all the things one could ever love in an Ace Hardware such as nice and knowledgable staff and shelves stocked to the max. They literally have everything. If Ace Hardware locations were Power Rangers, this one would be the White Ranger. You know, the one that had the Tiger Zord. Circling back, when I mean they have everything, they literally have everything. -Nails to hang your heavy framed art? Check. -Non-toxic cleaning supplies? Absolutely. -Soil to pot your plants. Yup. -A selection of grills and grill tools. Duh. They even have organic dog food, y'all. ORGANIC DOG FOOD. Am I screaming in this review? Yes. But happy screaming. Anyways, if you're wondering how much it set us back to copy our house key, it was around $2.50. I love Ace so much, I decided to sign up for a membership (free). I had been going to the one in Virginia Highlands, but they are SO nice and accommodating here that this is my first stop. Selection is awesome, parking (in the parking deck) is free and easy. Have used Sheps a couple of times out of convenience but today, their customer service policy was less than one star. I had to repair a shower knob and needed a hex key ( Allen wrench) to do the job. I bought a 9-in-1 set from Sheps. However nine and one comfort grip that held all the hex keys was so big, it would not fit between the shower wall and shower handle with enough room to actually tighten the screw. So, literally within 15 minutes, I was back in Sheps to exchange the nine set, for a different set. One without such a bulky handle ; a set that would actually work . The guy behind the counter closely inspected the unit I was exchanging and said it appeared that it had been inserted into a screw. I explained that indeed it had, but I could not actually turn the screw. I tried to explain that I couldn't get it to turn because the spacing between the shower handle in the wall was too tight. He went on to explain their return tool policy, and that his manager would be very very upset with him if he took this set back. I was very nice, but was trying to explain to him that I needed exchange this set, for a set that worked. This one physically would not work!! I've attached photos for reference to my plight Sheps wins the battle for $18.35, but they lose the war. Myself and my associates will never go there again. read more

If you need something quickly, and only want one overpriced option of an item, then this is your spot. They don't have basic essentials, and if they do they have a more glamorous, decorative version of it that is usually double or triple the price. I went in for a simple wall plate cover that has a light switch and receptacle. They didn't carry it in plastic, which is absurd because it's the most common thing out there. However they did sell it in decorative metal for more than double the price. I asked the associate at the counter if they had any in plastic. His lackadaisical response to me was "if you didn't see it, we don't have it." I informed him that it is a basic item, and that They did not even have a specific place on the shelf for this specific item, and I was frustrated with having to pay double for a decorative version. He then rolled his eyes, and said in a condescending way, "would you like for me to go look for you?" I said "no, you have a computer in front of you with an inventory list, if you can't pull it up and utilize it, then just sell me this overpriced item, because it will surely beat having to get in and out of the Home Depot parking lot on Ponce de Leon on a Saturday." I will never go back here. I will patron the Virginia Highlands location, because they at least ASK you if you'd like help finding anything the MINUTE you walk into the store, as opposed to this snarky teenager who didn't want to unglue himself from the counter and his phone. There is nothing better than great service. You forget about what it feels like because everyone is so accustom to the mundane average service we get on a daily basis. I am writing this review because of the great service I received yesterday at Shep's Midtown Ace. Located in the heart of Midtown on Juniper near 10th, Shep's is an Ace Hardware store in walkable distance to those of us who live in the neighborhood. I am painting a wall in my apartment and needed painters tape and a paint brush. I was in a hurry and the folks at Shep's were happy to help. I drove to the store because I was expecting it to rain and they had me in and out in under 10 minutes. I walked in the store and was immediately greeted by Todd. Todd asked what how he could help me and I told him. He walked me directly over to the paint supply section and said if you have any questions, don't hesitate to ask. I found what I needed and went up to the register where I was checked out. I exchanged a pleasant story about a football family I share the same last name with. We laughed and I was on my way. There was nothing extraordinary about my experience, it was just pleasant. The store was clean and the service was outstanding. I will be going to Shep's for my hardware needs instead of going to one of the big guys from now on. Thanks for a great experience. That's my word and I'm sticking to it. read more

Shep's Midtown Ace hardware store is one of the best additions we've had to Midtown in the last several years. Having a hardware store that you can walk to and not battle the traffic and parking lot at Home Depot is fantastic. But even better than the convenience of Shep's is the the customer service you get from the second you walk in the door. There is always someone to greet you and ask if they can help. I've gone there several times with a problem, but I wasn't exactly sure what I needed to fix the problem. They were able to tell me exactly what I need and then walk me to that item in the store. The customer experience is outstanding. For a store in the middle of a city, they have a great selection of items. I've never had an issue with them not having what I need. The prices might be a bit higher than the big box stores, but I'm more than happy to pay for the service and convenience. read more

Wouldn't take return of $80 heater that barely functions, saying it's seasonal (even if it's January). It's a shame because I love to support local businesses, but when I can find a $30 heater at the big box stores that's more functional than the crap they're selling here, it's hard to make a case for local business. read more

This place has EVERYTHING. From coolers to cat litter, to cold drinks--and every tool you can imagine. Shep's in particular also carries unique gift items that are well-chosen, which is unexpected for a hardware store, but welcome in a part of Midtown lacking general retail. (CVS is the only other "general store" option.) Prices are really reasonable, especially for the area, and it's very easy to walk to. There are some surface lots nearby, limited street parking, and if you look for the signs, free parking in the attached deck. read more

So today I called Shep's Midtown Ace, actually by accident, I thought I was calling Intown Ace Hardware on Highland whom I've been doing business with for years. I didn't know that there was a Ace at 7th and Juniper and was pleased as I'm in the ares often. I asked about a hard to find item which they had but only in a gift pack forcing me to but additional items if I was to get the item I wanted.. I agreed to pay the $99 dollars for the package on the phone and asked them to hold it. I'm in business and I understand the concept. If you have a hard to get item package it in a kit and force the sale of additional items and although I thought it to be a unscrupulous tactic I decided to give in and buy the forced package of 4 items to get the one item I want as a Christmas gift. The item I wanted is a $39.99 item. When I got there about 45 min after speaking to them I was greeted by Rick at the door and welcomed. Very nice. I explained what I had come for and he went into the back to get it, came out and rung it up at $119.96 / 129.56 with tax. I politely explained that this was not the price I was quoted, that I didn't need or want the other items and said I'm happy to pay the quoted price with a smile but to raise the price another $20 once I made the trip over in uptown traffic just to buy from them was not right really adding insult to injury as I'm already feeling a bit abused for having accepted the $99 deal. He then went over an itemised list of the items and the total and said he was sorry I was misquoted and offered nothing else even though I said I really didn't want the other stuff. I'm one of those stupid people who holds out for the local business, small business, buy local ect but here is the perfect reason why the brick and mortar business is going away. Its sad but true because I can trust the click button when a price is totaled in my cart. No, "I'm sorry but its $20 more now" and if it did happen at least I did't waste a half hour in my car round trip. A new business in today's business environment and this is how they kick it off. I'll keep buying from my local Highland Hardware store and I'll pass these guys by.I'll attach a photo of the itemized receipt on my Facebook, Nextdoor and other reviews. Cant find a way here. Went there several weeks ago and found parking scarce. Had to park in the only spot available, and it was on the back street. The other time was also on the back street and the visit previous to that the spot was found on the side street. A few days ago i decided to get smart and go so early that the parking lot would not be totally full. So far, so good. Found a convenient spot in that lot and walked around to the front, only to walk past the front door and had to backtrack to find the front and only door. But it was covered by a horizontal sliding metal sheet that had disguised the door. There was no sign for when it would be opened. No sign of business hours. No indication that, behind that visible shield was a door. Yelp says I'm rolling now. Yelp, I have nothing more to add. Oh, I wanted to online shop for a specific item "Solder-it". So I clicked on one of the selections for Ace hardware store on Memorial Drive. I was directed by an AI to an Ace Hdwr in Salinas, California. Not noticing that, and seeing it showed Shep's store, I opted to make that my store. Well, after that, it told me that I was shopping in Salinas CA. It gave me the option to change stores, but that function didn't function. I even gave it the 30312 zip. I gave it the state of Georgia. I gave Atlanta. I gave it the options of 5 and then 10 miles radii. Still, the AI would not shift me from Salinas, California to anywhere else. Shep's in 30312 opens at 10 usually, but I'll be damned if I'll make that trip again. Never, because it is too frustrating. "Epic, and pretty", says Yelp's AI. read more

As a new Midtown resident, I was thrilled to have a hardware store within walking distance. I had a purse with gold hardware that needed fixing, and I was curious if Shep's Midtown Ace might be able to help. Sure enough, after showing Todd the problem, he walked me around the store and picked out a couple of different pieces that might work. He took time out of his day to try the various pieces until the purse was as good as new. I'm so excited for Shep's Midtown Ace to be my new go-to spot. BEWARE Although I do love the ACE Hardware store, I will never shop there again. Or any tennant in that building. I parked there to get something at ACE, and decided to grab a coffee on my way out. I was gone for about 4 minutes tops, and Castle Parking was booting my car. I explained to him I was gone for a second and pleaded with him not to continue installing the boot. He refused. They are an awful company, and clearly sit there and watch your every move. So I will no longer shop at any of the tenants in the building. Good luck getting ahold of anyone at Castle outside of their dispatch, they simply do not answer the phone. Looked them up, over 150 complaints at the BBB website. Shady company. That building has lost my business as long as Castle is there. Warning all my neighbors. read more

I am so happy to have an ACE Hardware in town now. The staff here is super friendly. This location has free parking in the parking garage. I went to find a plastic tray for under one of my potted plants and being a new store they didn't have any in stock yet. I spoke to the manager and he ordered them in for me and they were there a couple days later. I would highly recommend Shep's over the big box stores. read more
