This Intown Ace Hardware in Virginia-Highland is rated very high on Yelp for a reason: outstanding customer service. During my visit, it seemed everywhere I turned, an employee was there to greet me and ask me if I needed anything. As I approached the key stand to get some keys cut, there were two employees ready to help. Shout-out to super-friendly Sahil for proactively asking me about my keys as soon as I pulled them out of my pocket. She let me know what my options were and I chose to have three standard keys cut at $2.98 each. Three total rang up to $9.74 after tax. Sahil told me this is the "fun" Ace Hardware and I could see why. The staff trended younger and more "hip." I'm a fan of Ace Hardware in general because each store feels like a small, local, and unique business. This one especially so. It's popular among locals with a strong sense of neighborhood and community. And, like other city Ace Hardware stores, it was densely-packed with all sorts of useful hardware and garden items. If you've never visited this location before, be sure to check out the beautiful plant room. They have a good selection of plants and a big wall of seeds. They even sell King of Pops here. Limited free parking is available on-site. I visited during a peak time and was able to snag a spot. If no spots are available, just park on Drewry St NE (also free). I moved into a new neighborhood 14 months ago. Finding a good hardware store is essential when you move. I found mine: Intown Ace on North Highland. The clerks are invariably helpful on all those crazy chores that a new house requires. Scott helped me this weekend figure out how to keep my the guests from the B+B that is across the back alley from me from driving on my garden when they turn around. (Don't ask. I am always amazed at how inconsiderate people can be. Especially that woman who blocked my garage with her car on Thanksgiving weekend.) Intown Ace has a larger garden center than I initially thought and behind the store they have a great selection of the larger garden tools and landscaping stuff. But the key point is these folks make you welcome when you walk in the store and have got home repair experts to explain not just what you need but how to do it. Plenty of parking. A big, loud, boisterous shout out to this fantastic answer to the B.O.D. ("big orange douche"). Granted, the nearby, big-box Home Depot provides jobs to American workers and for that I'm thankful. It's just my preference to work with folks who are in-town, managing a locally owned business. I feel seen here, whereas in HD I feel like a lost three year old searching for mommy in a supermarket. Intown Ace has almost everything for which you're looking - with friendly, attentive service and a great selection. I was pleasantly surprised by the breadth of garden selection. On this particular day I was tasked by my partner with a list of specific herbs and a vague idea of the decorative pots I wanted on the property. they had everything I needed, and the plants and pots were all in great shape - not banged around or mistreated. I absolutely love this place. First off, the staff is so genuinely kind. Immediately every time I've walked in so many people offer to help and guide me where I need to go. Literally the opposite experience I've had at Home Depot or Lowes. They also have SO much cool stuff! Fantastic hardware department, I got a face lotion I love, and an unbelievable plant section just to name a few. They are DEFINITELY worth checking out! You will not be disappointed. Second day at my new job and I am LOVING it! Today was a bit interesting...I felt like I was experiencing the movie "The Devil Wears Prada." Upon entering the office, I had a list of errands to run...coffee mugs, make keys for the office, pick up lunch, etc... I mean I do work for a very small company and have to wear many different hats (sales, marketing, account management, interior decorator, office manager, etc...). Plus, there are only two of us and someone has to do it right? :) Anyways, it gave me additional opportunity to drive the Jeep around so I was game. My main mission was to get additional keys made for the new office space. Of course, I went to Lowe's since I have used them before and was quite upset when all 3 keys did not work and I had to go back out there. Because of Lowe's, they recommended that I get the keys done at Ace Hardware. I need to stop by Lowe's tomorrow to thank them since I had the BEST CUSTOMER SERVICE EVER!!! Everyone at the store was super nice and super helpful. I felt like I was in a mom and pop shop. It's been a long time since I have been to an Ace Hardware and forgot all the cool things they sell besides the typical hardware goods for your home. Cool toys that I haven't seen in like forever and unique items that both Home Depot and Lowe's do not carry. Well I went back to the office with the 3 shiny new keys and guess what...they all worked!!! I am definitely going to start shopping more at Ace Hardware. Great place to find indoor plants, especially specific calathea and philodendron varieties you might not find in big box stores. They also have a section for air plants ($4.99-$19.99 depending on size). I probably wouldn't buy the more common houseplants here (monstera deliciosa, philodendron brasil, golden pothos, etc.) because they're a little more expensive than they would be at a Home Depot/Lowes, but great selection if you're looking for something less common. Also, found some really cute mini cactus/succulents for $1.99-$4.99. Staff is friendly and accommodating. read more

The guys who assisted me were very helpful. One of the guys told me to keep my receipt and if the screws didn't fit, to bring the receipt back, and we'll figure it out. Or give a refund. My new go-to spot for plants and any other related items!!!!! The service is excellent - we were asked if we needed help and the staff was so knowledgeable and patient while we were trying to decide what kind of potting we needed and what size planters we wanted. They showed us around and gave us a ton of useful tips about the best environment for growing specific plants. They had an HUGE selection and the prices were very reasonable, especially for a lot of the beautiful ceramic planters they offered. I am here -- or sending my partner here -- once a week, be it for a tool that we misplaced [again], massive ferns for our porch, a funnel for a costume, or a recommendation for a landscaper. I've never not found what I've needed here. Unless it's a super specific or luxury item. But for all the staples and the occasional random thingermajigger, they fit all my needs. We go there often because they are close and I try to shop with them when possible instead of going to the big chains. I think that everyone should try to frequent smaller businesses, even if sometimes you have to pay a little more. These guys are very knowledgeable and nice. Love the BGE, Love the BGE accessories section, cool plants, cool items, and drumroll please.... they sell Safari hats! The shop keepers are really knowledgeable and friendly and are just great guys. They stock lots of hard to find items such as Diatomaceous Earth, which is the best organic (kid and dog friendly) way to keep creepy crawlies out of your house/kitchen. I love this store. I don't even live in the highlands, but somehow everytime I go to Osteria or Belly, I wind up going into Ace. There's always something we want to look at or need. And the staff is so frakin helpful. =) I've had keys made here. Someone helped us with a hole in the wall repair kit. Then we talked at length with a guy about a little Weber grill and never bought it. He didn't care, he was just happy to help. Stores like these are what make me happy. I don't think I ever need to step into a Home Depot again, unless I'm building a deck or buying a lawn mower (both HIGHLY unlikely). This Ace Hardware is great for small household repairs, paints, garden supplies, random tools and items and people who know what they are talking about. My boyfriend (I love him dearly and hate to publicize this) is a bit challenged in the home repair department and luckily the employees at Ace are incredibly knowledgeable and honestly try to help. Today, we went in search of flat paint and caulk for the bathroom. My boyfriend was getting all excited about getting a huge tube of caulk and the manly caulk gun when the employee who was assisting us said "You're just caulking a small area right? You don't need that tube and the gun. This (handing us a small tube that did not require the gun) will be plenty." Thank you for not letting us by crap we didn't need! When I bought a bunch of supplies for gardening, I spoke with the gardening specialist and he helped me find everything I needed as well as helped me pick out plants to buy based on my space. Most notably, when my bathroom fan broke and I need to replace it, the one I bought from Home Depot was too big but it was the smallest fan they carried. I went to Ace in search of a smaller one when an employee showed me the fan motors and suggested I just replace the motor, rather than the whole thing. Perfect. Mainly echo-ing what the other yelpers have said: This hardware store is the prime example of what a neighborhood, locally owned shop should be - friendly, helpful, hospitable, and intentional about providing the best shopping experience for their customers. Every time I've been here, I received help rather quickly and can get what I need and head out in a few minutes. The staff is really knowledgeable about the nuts and bolts of any project you may need help on. The store is a bit small and the lanes are narrow, but you can still find what you need in a quick manner. Store is more for smaller repairs/improvement/projects. Take note of their lazy cats usually hanging out by the registers. Their laziness makes me wonder why I try to run around and get everything fixed so quickly. read more

In comparison to the big-box competitor nearby (which I rated a few days ago), I am a fan of the Intown Ace Hardware. When I need one 1/4"-20 tpi bolt in 3/4" length, they have it, and they don't make be buy twenty of them in one package. Staff is always ready to help, taking me exactly to what I need, and offering advice on whatever I'm working on (if I ask for it). And I'm grateful for that, because sometimes the historical samplings of loud hair-band music throughout the store can override my ability to put thoughts together. This time, however, I did well. This time, I'm attempting to make a picavet. Thanks to the folks at this Intown Ace, I'm going to be able to complete the project for less than $7. And that makes me very happy. read more

They did it again. 3 useless plumbers & 2 useless specialty plumbing stores later, I went to Intown Ace on the remote chance they'd be able to fix a plumbing problem. They had all the parts needed ("completely unavailable" according to useless specialty store #2) to repair the problem. The 5 other "experts" were talking about hundreds of dollars in plumbing work because "there was no way to find the parts that would otherwise fix this." Well, actually there was, and I should have just gone to Intown Ace in the first place. They are the oasis in a desert of morons. I will forever love this store. read more

We often visit this ACE when visiting our daughter who lives in a tiny apartment not too far away. Every time we go in, there is adequate, outgoing, knowledgeable staff, eager to help us find whatever we need for our next DIY project(s). They execute excellent customer service with ease. We can pick up 10-15 DIY items there in 15 minutes, which would take well over an hour to hunt down in one of the big box stores. The large wind chimes I got from there last Christmas make our patio sound like a cathedral every time their is a slight breeze. Browsing their isles is so much fun, it gets our creative juices flowing and we wind up fixing more things in her apartment that we originally planned. Bought a new Weber grill at Intown Ace Hardware. Phillip went above and beyond to help us. We had a grill that squirrels had chewed on and a mouse had moved in to the bottom. Phillip added some wiring to the back of the new grill to prevent any critters from taking over. After bringing it home we couldn't get the gas to work. Phillip took time on his lunch hour to come by to discover we had connected 2 gas lines which prevented the gas from coming through. He fixed it and refused a tip. He was happy he figured it out.
