Bastion was amazing! My wife and I were visiting from Sacramento and wanted to check out some of the famed gluten free restaurants in Portland. Bastion definitely is part of what makes Portland's gluten free scene great! The location is in a beautiful small neighborhood in the city. Bastion sits among some small businesses and has the feel of a cozy business in a house. My absolute favorite thing about Bastion was their fried chicken. It was crispy and delicious. Often times gluten free items lack a bit of substance when it comes to how it feels, but the nice meaty chicken pieces really helped offset that in the case of the chicken sandwich. It was fulfilling to eat and would do a great job filling up anyone who is hungry. My wife went with the waffles and they were great. They were presented beautifully with a gorgeous flower garnish. If you want a nice IG picture, well, here you go! To wash it all down I tried their mango smoothie. And this thing was smooooooof. This was one of THE BEST smoothies I've had in a while and I would drive back up from Sacramento just to get this again. We loved our experience at Bastion and am sad to leave! read more

I went here at 11am on a Friday specifically for the shakshuka and they said they were sold out?? so I ordered the smoked salmon bagel. It was good but definitely overpriced for what it is. You can tell the bagel is not a normal bagel, I think it was gluten free or something? That didn't bother me at all but just be aware of that. Also, the smoked salmon was not like typical lox, you can see in the picture that it's more flakey, more like cooked salmon with smoked flavor. I also got the muffin in the picture. It was a little dry/not fresh tasting, even after I asked them to heat it up. It definitely has a healthy/homemade taste, probably that it was made with some type of wheat or oat flour. I also got the oat chia pudding to go (not pictured) and it was good too, still on the pricey side but at least the portion isn't tiny. Overall, the ambiance is nice for a cute brunch and I like that they supposedly use clean ingredients (no seed oils and refined sugar). For two years in a row now, Bastion has been my go-to for my partner's birthday cake order. Both times I got a chocolate cake with chocolate frosting. I can't believe these cakes are gluten free and don't have any refined sugars. Absolutely DELICIOUS! And the presentation is beautiful, with scalloped frosting edges and gorgeous edible flowers arranged on top. I still haven't actually eaten a meal at Bastion. I'll have to change that really soon. Stumbled looking for a healthy brunch and it was busier than expected! Salmon hash was amazing. I did ask for more dill sauce and hot sauce and it made so much better! The turmeric golden chai was also amazing I enjoyed every item I bought here. The staff were all friendly but they were so busy. It did take a while for our food to come out. I've been here several times, and while the food has always been tasty, my experience today was concerning enough that I won't be returning. Because the kitchen is visible from the dining area, I've noticed on previous visits that the cooks weren't wearing gloves or hair restraints. I tried to overlook it because I enjoyed the food. Today, however, I had about 20 minutes to observe the kitchen while waiting in line, and what I saw was extremely troubling. I watched the cooks prepare food with their bare hands without using utensils. One cook handled receipts, crumpling each one after preparing an order, and then immediately went back to handling food without washing his hands. At another point, that same cook left the kitchen, picked up a mop and dustpan, cleaned the floor, and returned to food preparation without washing his hands. I also never saw either cook wash their hands during the time I was watching. I saw one of them touch his face and then reach with his bare fingers into a tray of parsley, which he then sprinkled onto a customer's food. At that point, I was honestly so uncomfortable that I turned around and left. What bothered me most was that a woman I believed to be the owner was present in the kitchen and appeared to witness what was happening, yet I didn't see any intervention. I really wanted to like this place, and I've given it multiple chances because the food is good. But good food isn't worth compromising basic food-safety standards. I hope management takes this seriously and addresses these practices, because I simply can't recommend eating here based on what I witnessed today. read more

That is rare! Come here to eat healthy real food. It's a cute little cafe where you order first and then sit down. Bus your table after. The staff is friendly and their menu is excellent! I had a hard time picking what to eat, but I ended up going with the salmon salad. The person at the front said their popular items are the waffles and borscht. Both sound delicious, so maybe I'll try it next time. Their menu is unique and not the usual selection on a lunch menu, like a deli sandwich. Every plate is presented beautifully too. They put my large salmon salad on a bed of lettuce and topped it with beets, pomegranate, a radish, and what looked like flower petals/buds. I saved 1/4 of my lunch to-go. My husband had their salmon hash with potatoes, and let me tell you, that egg on top looked delicious. I saw some other folks ordering that, so it seems like a popular item on the menu too. We also ordered the matcha latte with coconut milk and the Bastion pink latte. Bastion pink latte is tasty and healthy (beets, cherry, maple syrup, ginger, and substituted with coconut milk). No caffeine though! I loved my matcha latte because it wasn't too bitter and not too sweet (I had honey for sweetener), but it was creamy and delicious with the coconut milk. What a cool place. I met a friend here for a late lunch on a weekday and I was surprised how busy it was. We ordered at the counter and the service was helpful and friendly. Favorite brunch in Portland! Love that you don't have to worry about many allergens (all gluten, dairy, and seed oil free!) and that the meals are balanced to provide plenty of veggies and protein (founded by a nutritionist!). The flavors are there too!! The acorn and sweet potato waffles are my favorite on the menu along with the pink latte. I've also tried their chicken soup and smoked salmon bagel-- both were amazing! The only thing that would make it better would be if the side salad dressing had more acidity or saltiness-- it was mostly oil, like it wasn't mixed well. Amazing! The food is so fresh, the ingredients are high quality, the GF bread is incredible and they were even sweet enough to bring out some salmon for our dog. Somehow I've been here 3 times and don't have ant pictures and still haven't left a review! One of my friends is celiac and another is vegan so this is a great spot for folks with specific diets. Their food is also great! I usually get the side vegetable hash with an egg but I've also had the breakfast sandwich. My boyfriend got the mushroom biscuits and gravy recently and it was amazing. Great matcha too! Only docking a star because their pastries are pretty dry. I get that they are vegan and gluten free so maybe I just have a bad threshold for that. Seating is also pretty limited inside - when it's warmer out it's not a huge issue but I waited for at least 20-30 mins this weekend to sit inside and there's not really a great place to wait. The staff threw in a few free pastries and were really kind about it. I'll keep coming here though! It's a great middle ground for my friends with special diets. read more

I have visited Bastion several times now and am always greatly impressed. This has become my favorite go-to spot for a great-tasting, healthy meal or an afternoon pick-me-up. The space here is relatively small inside, but they have plenty of seating outdoors, with a covered deck that's perfect for enjoying on a sunny day. The staff here are always very welcoming and friendly. The menu here is plant-forward and 100% Free from Gluten, Dairy, Seed Oils, Refined Sugars. They also use organic, seasonally based ingredients, making dishes that are always fresh and so delicious, not to mention nourishing. This is one of the few places that I can genuinely say that I never feel guilty after indulging in one of their pastries because everything that is made here is made with healthy and clean ingredients that leave your body feeling good and nourished. I'm so thankful to have places like Bastion that have such great-tasting, healthy food. I cannot recommend coming here enough! read more

I was in this place when it was satellite dream pizza. Has the same comfortable, welcoming vibes now as then, and that probably has to do more with the people here than the place itself, bastian is gluten-, dairy- and a few other things free; largely vegan/vegetarian but they have meat and eggs. I like this approach, focusing on food allergies while leaving the rest of the food field open. These folks are committed to what they serve, offering loaves of their own gluten free breads. I was really impressed with Bastion, their menu and dessert case were a representation of their cool atmosphere and typical busy weekend line. A bright and light space with limited seating and a patio outside. I'd go earlier if you can to try and snag a coveted inside table. The service was lovely and they explained everything beautifully. You order at the counter and then find a seat. You can even buy some of the amazing bread there too! The sand which I had was on some hearty bread and came with a gorgeous light salad. Id love to have given Bastion 3.5 stars. The service was great and incredibly friendly. The food and drinks looked amazing but the flavor was mixed. Highly recommend the pink latte, chicory and dandelion latte, and wild salmon bowl. 5 stars on all those. The fried chicken sandwich tasted good but was not worth the mess of the very soggy bottom bun. The pumpkin curry was fine but nothing special. I'd recommend it though. I'm always looking for restaurants that have GF/DF options that taste good, and this was hands down one of the bests I've experienced! Also the staff were so friendly and helpful when ordering which made the experience even more enjoyable. There are no espresso-based drinks, but there is drip coffee and amazing matcha for your caffeine needs. There truly is something for everyone, and you will leave feeling nourished and fueled for your day. I recommend planning your visit in the morning or after the lunch rush unless you want a wait. The inside is quite small, but there is a heated patio. Sometimes you can call and order take way. Recommendation for the restaurant- I'd love the option to sub the side salad with a different side, preferably something warming. Came for breakfast on the weekend. Husband and I were waiting in line to order. While we waited a table inside became available so I grabbed the table and my husband stayed in line to order. A minute after I sat down an employee came over and told me I couldn't sit there because I didn't order anything. I explained that my husband was in line and about to order. The employee again said I had to leave the table because someone else wanted it and they ordered. I didn't argue, I just got up and we left. So the seating isn't really self-service if someone else wants your table even though you are already sitting there. read more

Bastion - OHHHHH Bastion! Where do we even begin? Lovely lil gem on the south side of Portland. The ambiance and space is lovely. The inside of the restaurant is small, not a place for a large groups to eat indoors. You will likely have to wait for a table or sit outside if you are coming on the weekend. The deck and outdoor spaces are lovely but alas, the bugs have discovered. We ended up moving tables two times running from the flies. There is no table service beyond them delivering the food to your table. Food is fine but quite unique. If you're looking for a standard all-American classic breakfast, probably not the place to go... many items are quite unique with some unusual ingredients. It was a nice experience but not what I usually seek for a menu. The prices were quite high, not feeling that it was worth the expense. The staff was nice.
