I gave this review two stars because, although some things were good, I wouldn't go back there. The main problem was that it is incredibly noisy. My dining partner and I sat at an intimate booth. Despite leaning across the table so our heads were less than 2 feet apart, conversation was very difficult. This wasn't the kind of noise where one or two parties were being offensively loud, it was general restaurant noise. It didn't make me feel any better that I could hear every word that our waiter was saying three tables away but I couldn't hear someone at my own table. Restaurants have tools to manage noise, they don't care to use them because high noise levels boosts table turnover. The service was acceptable without being truly attentive. The salad, the Zucchini noodles and the roast cauliflower were delicious but the Branzino was dry, I would have been disappointed if I had cooked it myself. The space is very nice and the ambiance is good - if you ignore the crushing noise levels. read more

Over priced meat ,small drinks where you could not taste alcohol. The tables are small so there is no room for plates and appetizers at the same time. I thought the menu was limited. The light from the pasta prep was very bright,like I was sitting outside. The waitress was okay she had a reasonable knowledge of the menu. Overall I will not return. read more

Celebrated our son's birthday with dinner here. Great service from hostess to water glass refills to wait staff. We enjoyed a pizza for appetizer which was perfect. Bread basket was very good. We really enjoyed the pasta with a truffle sauce. The pasta with meatballs was delicious. Will definitely return! read more

This is my boyfriend's and my second time going to Basta for dinner at the Thousand Oaks location. The food was in point as always. We had the wagyu beef hamburger and a shrimp and lemon pasta from their special. Their customer service was excellent. Especially from busboy, Jose Gonzalez, who was very attentive and made sure we had everything we needed. He made sure we had water and plenty of bread. Definitely coming back! I wanted to give this place a few tries before adding my review. The food is delicious but the service is never any good. Today we came in when it opened, the bus boy and hostess were more helpful than our server, Maria- who had maybe three tables. She was on her phone, read the special from her phone, which is just yuck! She asked the bus boy to do her work, if I had cash we would have tipped him and not her. The service here is consistently VERY slow. The ambiance mostly great, but the music is way too loud inside. You can hardly hear each other talk. Overall, the food is great-the service is the biggest compliant. I guess, the owner doesn't care much about reviews, considering he's not replied to others' reviews about the service. Just don't expect great service if you come to the TO location and loud music. read more

first time at basta, and it was delicious! the wagyu carpaccio was by far our favorite, it was so tender, flavorful, and the burrata was fresh and creamy. the cappelletti was a stuffed beef and pork pasta which was pretty good, and the sauce made it even more delicious. the calzone was tasty, and we ordered it without the mushrooms because of allergies, nonetheless, had great flavor. thank you to our server, josh, for creating a wonderful experience for our valentines and birthday celebration! read more

The atmosphere is terrific! Nice open space cutely decorated with a comfortable sweeping bar. The food was absolutely delicious and bountiful which is unusual these days...It was Valentine's Day so we arrived at 4 o'clock expecting it to be busy and sat at the bar to eat. The only flaw was the service, or lack of it. The bartender was pleasant but never gave us eye contact unless we flagged her down which we had to do for everything. We had to ask for our drinks then to order and everything else down to our silverware and plates. We were never asked if we needed anything or how our food was, or if we even wanted more drinks. I went up to what looked like a manager and told him we wanted to order dinner and get another round of drinks. He accommodated us, but never came back either. It didn't ruin our experience because the food was so awesome and we will definitely go back again. Hopefully the service will improve overtime because hospitality and great service is the backbone to a stellar restaurant. read more

What a disaster ! We arrived at 9 pm and the restaurant was very busy , but it died very fast. We only ordered 1 appetizer and 2 salads with a bottle of wine . Half way through our salad , around 10:10 the server Ivan dropped the check ( we were still eating and didn't ask for it ) and in 10 min he came and said we had to pay other wise he could clock out and his manager would write him up. Then they proceed to close the restaurant not carrying at all at us. They were swiping the floor , moving chairs around, making even hard to walk through. I work at the industry and I understand very well how this things work, if the restaurant says they close at 10 PM, and they let us in at 9 , they should at least wait until their last guest finish their meal, but no... we felt very uncomfortable, like they were kicking us out. No manager were at the floor and that is probably one of the reasons why the staff were acting that way when there's still guest inside. The food was OK, nothing special but the service was Horrible, We were very excited to visit the place but will definitely never Come back. It's really unacceptable how the staff can close the restaurant with guest inside. If they want to close yearly then change their operation hours and don't let guest in. read more

So very sad and disappointed... I called to see about making a reservation on Saturday night and was told the restaurant doesn't take reservations. However, they told me that if I came by 5:30 PM, my party of two should not have a problem getting a table right away. We were very excited as the menu looked delicious and I heard the wine was great... When I arrived at 5:25 PM, I was told that there was an hour wait. Interestingly enough, they were open tables outside and inside. It didn't make sense! Guess I won't be trying this place! read more

The service was not great, it took far too long after being seated for our server to greet us, and then took about 30 minutes after that for him to come back and take our order. Our table was not fully set when we got seated so we kept having to wave people down to ask for olive oil and balsamic or more water. However the food was delicious, and came out fairly quickly, so they score points for that. We came to celebrate my friend's birthday and we made the server aware of that and we were extremely disappointed when they did nothing for her. The place was also far too cramped they tried to fit as many tables as possible in a tiny space and it was annoying to have to get out of my chair several times so the party sitting in the table next to us could get in and out. read more

Lesson learned, when eating at an Italian restaurant, stick with the pasta. My husband's Cappelletti was wonderful. I made the mistake of ordering the red trout because I love trout and it isn't on many menus. This one was ok, but the sauce was overly heavy with olive oil (IMO) and the fish was a bit blah without it. Stick to the pasta. Also, be aware that everything is ala carte. Nothing comes with the entree. We ordered the Gem salad to share, like we often do, because they are often large these days. This one (nice assortment of greens, two asparagus spears and about 1/4 avocado with a lemony oil and vinegar dressing) was piled high on a dinner plate - in other words, enough to feed a table of four generously. There is no smaller option so if you want to add a nice salad to your pasta, you are out of luck unless you REALLY love greens or have three friends to share it with. It is $18.00, so I guess I should have figured out it would be huge, but I didn't. We had the butter cake for dessert, which came with vanilla gelato and raspberry sauce. I wished for a bit more sauce - it was merely decoration on the plate. Went to the newish location in TO tonight, place was packed and was really looking forward to a night out with the girls. Took awhile to get service, but was fine with that because we weren't in a hurry and it was busy and seemed understaffed. Menu is slightly annoying without prices for their steaks which is what they're known for, so when it's busy and you're trying to ask questions about the menu, you pretty muhave to wait at least 10-15 minutes between questions. So, finally ordered drinks, then another 15 minutes ordered the octopus appetizer which was quite good, entrees including the Branzino, the special lasagna, and the special fillet. The server came out about 10 minutes later saying there was no more lasagna, so my gal pal had to order another dish which was the other pasta special, shrimp stuffed ravioli. About 20 minutes later, the ravioli arrived...then at least 30 minutes later the other 2 meals arrived. At this point the ravioli had been consumed already and the server said, "sorry, not all entrees come out at the same time". Really? Since when? We came to actually "eat together", not sit and watch one person eat at a time. So fillet arrived, overcooked, which was extremely disappointing since it was $65!!! But not willing to send it back at that point. Branzino was just okay as well. No plans on returning to this place any time soon. Overall experience...meh, wouldn't recommend. Heard their aged steaks are incredible, but at $120 for the smallest, wasn't willing to chance it. read more

The food at Basta in Thousand Oaks is awful. I looked at their website and chose two things I wanted to try:parpadelle with artichokes or the sausage sandwich. Basta had neither. Said I must have looked at their Agoura website. I didn't. So I chose the chicken parmigiana sandwich. It was awful, terribly burnt but I didn't want to make a fuss because the other four ladies were treating me for my birthday. I pushed around the food but couldn't eat it. The other ladies weren't particularly happy with their pizza choices either. Very expensive for just the crust, sauce and a little cheese. At the end of the dinner they noticed I hadn't eaten and told the waitress about it. She said something like I'm sorry. They then told her it was my birthday and what treat would she bring. You won't believe this - she said they had nothing for free but if I ordered something she could put a flare on it! The bill came and she did not remove charges for the chicken parm. They asked why and she said she wasn't allowed to. They asked the manager to come and with a frown she removed the charge. What an experience. I will never return. Yuppie and pretentious. And there is no convenient parking. read more
