I was staying at the Cheshire hotel next door and when I arrived I was STARVING. Thank goodness I got to Basso when I did (7:30pm) because they seemed to be closing early for the evening. Their voicemail message said that after reopening after the COVID pandemic, they would be open until 9pm. However, the front desk guy at the hotel did tell me they might close early if it wasn't busy. Anyways, I felt a bit rushed... but politely. Excellent Italian food, classy vibes. Logistically, Basso is located at a hotel and has a fairly large parking lot. Valet is available. The restaurant itself is located in a basement and has a speakeasy/sports bar crossover vibe. There are gas lamps that light around the edge of the room, creating an intimate atmosphere. Their menu tends to change frequently depending on item availability. It would have been helpful for our server to tell us what they were out of in advance, because we ended up having to change our minds on an entree and three drinks throughout the course of the night at the time of ordering. I tried to get a squash blossom pizza but sadly they were out, so I had a chicken based pasta dish, which was good. My dining partner had the pappardelle, which was AMAZING. So Basso has a great social atmosphere. I started out with the Cannellini Dip( pic below) , creamy, but the basil oil coated over the flavors so I really didn't taste the blended flavors. The cocktails aren't strong at all but they do have zest to them. I ordered the Pappardelle,( phone went dead so I didnt get the pic) forgot to tell the waitress no mushrooms but It actually wasn't that bad of a taste. The dish was good but had very little seasoning, it didn't taste bland but it tasted like beef stroganoff only the hamburger helper brand taste way better. They do not take reservations so 3 of us joined their waitlist at 5:10pm on a Saturday night. It said we would be seated between 6:30-7pm. We decided to commit and waited around for an opportunity to dine here. We watched as we moved down the queue and we were two minutes away in an Uber and still showing 3rd in line. Suddenly, it just said "You've been removed from the waitlist and you can rejoin if you'd like". We entered the restaurant around 7:15pm, the hostess said she still saw us on the list and we'd be seated next. We waited another hour before they decided to seat us. I'm sorry, but a three hour wait for a party of 3 is absolutely ridiculous!! The food was good, our server took 15-20 mins to get us cocktails after we ordered (this happened a few times). Then she said she'd been let go for the night and wanted us to close up with her. So, we waited all night and then had to rush to close out. Upon leaving the restaurant, two of us stopped to use the restroom. Two of the stalls had zero toilet paper, there was no more hand soap and the trash can was overflowing. I dined here years ago and it was fantastic. We all said we love the atmosphere, food was good, drinks were pretty good but we'll probably never come back due to the poor experience. Cooked to perfection and the truffle fries with it are amazing. The cocktails are strong and tasty, and there is a nice wine selection. Basso is a great date night spot! My husband and I met up here with another couple for a later dinner. The menu is limited, but the atmosphere is dark, romantic and intriguing. It's in a basement unread another popular restaurant and inn. It reminds me of Sotto in Cincinnati, one of the most romantic restaurants in the city! Besides the cozy ambiance and mysterious den-like vibes, the service is top-notch and food good. I wouldn't rate the food as the best ever, but it was good and notable. The portion sizes on the entrees, especially the gnocchi, are small. But the pizzas are large and can feed 2! If you are hungry, go for a pizza, it's oven fired pizza with plenty of toppings. I got the Emo band which has homemade sausage in it and poblano peppers. An unique combo, not spicy at all and still good as leftovers. For apps, I recommend the Crispy Meatballs! The sauce is great! We also ordered the truffles fries, but I wasn't super impressed with those. The tiramisu for dessert was delicious and just enough for two of us. I loved the atmosphere here and my risotto was delicious. I wanted to love this place so badly, although our service and the portion size of my plate really turned me off. We had to change our order three times after putting it in, because the waitress kept coming back and saying "actually, we are out of that." It would leave customers much less dissatisfied if you would tell them from the beginning that you don't have something. Additionally, my boyfriend asked if there was champagne in the drink he was considering ordering, the waitress told him there was not, so he proceeded to order it. She arrived to the table with the drink for him stating "there actually is champagne in this." I was confused that she didn't find it pertinent to come ask if he still wanted that drink after she found out that it had champagne in it. Like I said, the risotto was delicious. It was perfectly flavored and had a kick to it. The one problem I had was that there was not more of it. It came out as a very small portion and it left me feeling hungry within two hours of eating it. This individual ended up taking our order and promptly came back to let us order drinks which was super nice of him but still at that point was too long. Perhaps he was also just trying to help us out on timing but it was weird that our pasta and steak came out before the Caeser salad and the crudo.
