I wanted wine and must say that they have really great wine - I enjoyed both the Pinot Noir and the Chardonnay. Also they had the most adorable bathroom with framed high school photos of celebrities (St. Louis is the most high school fixated city in America, IYKYK). The service was friendly but a bit uneven, considering how empty it was when we first arrived. There were some long waits for drinks, and a couple of mix-ups. I believe the main source of confusion was that one big check had been started, but with people coming and going at different times, it had to be split into separate checks on the back side so people could pay before leaving. I do recommend them for happy hour and plan to return.

It's the only of the drinks I've had and it's one of those rare menu items that you fall for on your first visit and probably will rarely, if ever, deviate from... unless the menu is seasonal. Oh, that would be a bummer. Let's hope this is an evergreen cocktail. It is so well-balanced, yummy, and prettily presented. I plan to return to this bar often. We asked if we could just take them ourselves. We still had a couple of drinks coming and were told those would be brought outside, but once again, my friend eventually had to go back inside to get the final two drinks. Unfortunately, the overall consensus from our group was that the drinks weren't very good either--even something as simple as a vodka soda with lime juice. I'm really not sure what was going on with the bartending and serving staff that evening, but the entire experience was disappointing. Another friend and I actually suggested this place to the group because we had heard good things and seen the positive reviews, so it was especially disappointing that everyone left feeling let down. We ultimately left without finishing our drinks. There's definitely potential here, but the service needs significant improvement.

We were seated right by the entrance with a curtain separating the area. True to its name, a Tiger statue sits at the entrance which is decorated in tropical manner. The theme continues within the restaurant. Lazy Tiger has a happy hour which if I remember correctly, ended at 6:30. Their cocktails are $12 during happy hour (rather than $14) and they have a selection of snack type items which you could have as appetizers if you'd like. We both got a cocktail. My husband had the human costume (gin, amaro, blanc vermouth, melon, gnartruese, malic acid) and I had the humble brag (gin, rhum, salted banana, forbidden rice, coconut, lemon). Both were refreshing and different but in a good and surprising way. We started with the nachos from the happy hour menu and added some pork belly per our writer's recommendation. I love pork belly anything anyway. The nacho was a huge serving! And it was very tasty with a good amount of crispy pork belly peppered throughout. I had the Morrocan spiced halibut served with couscous, asparagus, Spanish chorizo, tomatoes, pistachio dukkah. Halibut was well seasoned and prepared perfectly. We also shared an order of the vegetable fried rice and added some spam because I am a sucker for spam fried rice. It came with some chili crisps which brought the dish to another level. My husband had the tamales which he thoroughly enjoyed. I didn't get to try some but it looked fantastic. There is a food menu, but I will be honest I've only ever come later at night. The drink selection is very good although when it is very crowded it can be hard to order. The last time I was at Maryland House was after my sister-in-law's wedding. They had actually paid to reserve space. When we got there though, nothing was set aside. It was pretty frustrating. After about 30 minutes they opened up a side room for us. It was late though, and that kind of took the wind out of the sales. Our waitress was sweet and friendly throughout the whole night. I also heard they do events here pretty regularly, like weekly or monthly, and I really want to come back for one of those. Definitely a spot I'll be returning to!

The first time I went I was very impressed by the decor, the food and service. The Meyer lemon chicken was fabulous! Craft cocktails were tasty as well. Although the management staff seems a bit impressed with themselves, I was excited to go back. On second visit, a Monday night, the service was poor and the Meyer lemon chicken was replaced on the menu with a boring breaded chicken patty. My server was asked to adjust the calamari to not have tentacles only rings she agreed and the food runner delivered the appetizer with tentacles and no warning or explaination. She simply didn't care. The busboy attempted to remove plates before we were done eating, when there was clearly food left on them and had to be told to stop so we could finish our meal. The gas lanterns at the table produced a constant clicking sound that never stopped like it was trying to light every 3 minutes which was quite annoying. A word to Basso....you have a great space and a great opportunity please don't let your customer service and menu changes take you down a road we would rather not see happen. Early success sometimes makes people forget that it's the small personal touches that bring people back time after time. Its as much of a people business as it is a food business. read more

Basso's atmosphere is absolutely fabulous. I enjoyed the warm glow of the lights, the heavy woodwork, and the comfortable decor. It was very inviting and it allowed us to thoroughly enjoy our dining experience. I'd give the food a 4, and the service a 1. We made a reservation for 7pm. We arrived, and were told our table wasn't ready. Over 50% of the tables were vacant. We had to wait at the bar... for 30 minutes before reminding the hostess that we made a reservation. The salad was tossed fresh and was very chunky and flavorful! Definitely enough to share as a starter or a meal by itself. The meatballs (beef and pork combo) were house-made, slightly sweet and a hearty and tasty dish having fried garlic and roasted Brussel sprouts tossed in - YUM! We also tried their Ziti house-made Pasta and some Grilled Carrots. The Ziti was excellent, however the lemon flavor was a bit heavy to the taste for me but a nice entree. The grilled carrots were good, but not special to me, so i'd opt for a different dish to share next time. Yuzu Bar for dessert was also perfect after the meal, and paired well with a hot french press coffee! Really enjoyed Scouts overall, great atmosphere, food and service! That's the vibe. We started on the front patio on a Friday night and quickly realized we'd made a mistake. The doors to the interior were open and the music -- a rock-forward playlist that night -- was loud enough that we considered bailing. Our server, was unbothered when we asked to move up to the rooftop. Where we met with a new bartender and server, London, who rolled with it, got us resettled, and from that point on the night was great. London was clearly handling the bar and most of the rooftop tables, but she was attentive throughout, and made eye contact, which seems a near miracle from many 20-something these days. Bumping the score up just for the flexibility on the table move alone. The food: crab cakes were genuinely good, not life-changing, but well above the weak-crab-cake bar that exists in most of the world, served simply with capers and a small salad. I went off-script and ordered the wagyu burger medium rare with fontina (London mentioned cheddar is the more common pick, but the Fontina offerd a great alternative). The burger was deeply flavorful and cooked exactly right, but here's my one real note for the kitchen: toast the brioche bun. Wagyu medium-rare puts out a lot of juice, and an untoasted bun loses its structural integrity about three bites in. A quick toast would let the bun keep some additional integrate and keep up with the perfectly cooked beef. The pom buff were great, the best elevated patato tots you may come by. Beyond what we ordered, the Greek salad is a longtime go-to -- chopped, with grape leaves and pita, available in a small or large, and easily dressed up into a light meal with or without adding some protein or can be share as a self-dress bruschetta appetizer for the group if you ask for extra bread. The cheese boards are also a reliable pick. The wine list is extensive (it's a wine bar, after all), but they don't sniff at cocktails -- I had a solid fine old fashioned, and my wife shared had a Malbec that paired well with everything. Lots of gluten-free options across the menu, too. What Sasha's gets right is that it has refused to become precious. "Wine bar" reads as pretentious to some people, but this place runs as a neighborhood spot. You'll see college kids dressed way down, couples on dates dressed way up, Hawaiian shirts, oversized sweaters, the full range. It's the kind of place where you can split a bottle with your girlfriends, meet a date for drinks and a quick bite without committing to a full dinner, or roll in for brunch on the weekend. Different times of day, different vibes -- always approachable. 4.7 stars. Loses a few tenths for the front-patio music situation and the weak burger bun, but more than makes up for it on flexibility, food, and overall hang factor.
