I've been dealing with Chris and his family at Basone for years now. They have always gone out of their way to give me the best service possible and treat me like family. Chris even made a call to Montreal to finally track down an obscure truss rod nut for my old Squier (and even the one he got required extra machining), when I was resolved to the fact that I'd probably have to get a new neck. They'll also not sell your something you don't need. I thought one of my guitars may need a feet dressing, but he saved me money by showing me it did not. Like most good luthiers, they have a huge backlog of work. If you want something done right away, this is probably not the place for you, unless you luckily land in a lull. It's worth the wait. You can get anything up to an entirely custom built guitar made here. They also deal in a nice combination of common and boutique brands for amps, pedals, accessories, etc. Highly recommended. read more

Super nice guy that runs the place. He was really patient with me while I rattled off the long list of issues that are currently plaguing my heavily modded electric guitar. I came in asking for some electrical work grounding/nicer soldering, a quick nut filing and a bit of love for the fretboard. I was quoted roughly 10 days. As someone who likes to support local business and bases my choices off of the good reviews I said what the heck and gave them a shot. I was at no point concerned with the cost of the work as this is my main instrument, so I didn't base my choice off of that. I did also mention that I had to leave to perform in a festival near the end of the month. After 13 business days (18 days total) I went back in and just grabbed my guitar which had yet to be serviced. The guy was quite overbooked which is understandable. The gentleman apologized and threw me two packs of free strings for the inconvenience, (however the pack I had in the case was no longer there so really only 1) He said he was going to try to get the guitar done by the end of the day, but at this point I leave in 4 days and no longer have the luxury of time. Obviously this was an isolated case and I don't expect that everyone would have a similar experience and this review is in no way aimed to slander the owner who treated me with nothing but respect. This is meant to be an reflection of my experience. That being said I'd definitely consider shopping there again, however I wouldn't take anything in for repair without confirming a hard return date and as a result I am now left scrambling to find a capable guitar tech to service my guitar on very short notice with very little time. read more

THIS GUY IS AN ABSOLUTE HACK. Shopped around to find a repair person to do some work on my guitar and found Basone. Initially i was really excited to find someone who was straight forward about the services offered.... until i picked up my guitar. I received a voice message saying that my guitar was ready and that the repair "matches the vintage vibe" of my guitar? unsure what that exactly meant i went in on my next day off to pick it up. the repair was not done in the fashion to which he had quoted me, to the point where my guitar was actually damaged and then he charged me $40 more than he had quoted price. Having dealt with another so called "luthier" before i payed the money and left extremely disappointed. I guess this is what to expect in vancouver? If you value your instrument and want a superb end product don't stop here. An absolute hack job. read more

My boyfriend and I had an unforgettable experience with Chris and his wife on our stop to get his banjo fixed. Chris was able to realign, restring, and tune up the Banjo in a two day turn around mid tour, and for us in despite his existing work load. Chris was personable, hilarious, and insanely knowledgeable and it was so refreshing to be able to feel the passion Chris and his wife have about what they do, and we felt like friends there, more so than just customers. I would recommend this store for purchase or repair or any inquiry at all because it was such an efficient and easy experience to get our repair done there and the work done was impeccable, for such a reasonable price point. Basone is as dishonest as they come. He likes to talk about how great his reputation is and then he plays games with his customers. I bought new machine heads from him for $80 + tax and he gave me $55 when I returned them unopened. He sold me a guitar that didn't work and the list goes on. My advice is to find another guitar shop for whatever you need. read more

I bought a second hand gibson les Paul special from a store in Portland, only to have the pickup selector die on me after 3 days. After the original store offered no help, I started phoning round stores in the Vancouver area. Basone was one of the last I called as they had no reviews on yelp. After the service I received I really don't understand why - they were fantastic from beginning to end! I had received quotes from other stores, all in the $50 range, but Chris filled me with confidence over the phone when he laid out the steps he would take to resolve it and the time frame to complete the repair. In the store he was approachable despite helping two customers simultaneously, and took the time to make sure that a repair really was necessary. Two days later when I picked up my fixed guitar I chatted to another friendly and attentive lady who rang me up while offering advice on new strings, all while simultaneously feeding her infant son. Nice! I get an incredibly welcoming vibe from this family run store, and Chris has many examples of his prowess as a luthier on display. I will definitely return to this store for service in the future, and maybe even to enquire about a custom made guitar. read more

I brought my guitar in for a new set of tuners and a setup. When I got it back it was like a whole different instrument. The guitar felt better than ever and it was a riot to play (and that's saying a lot because I thought it was perfectly fine *before* I brought it in.) I'm buying a new guitar soon and will most likely bring it in to Basone for a setup too; hoping they'll work their magic again. Very friendly and enthusiastic staff. Parking can be a challenge during the week days, though. read more

Friendly, knowledgeable, honest and reliable service. I needed an upgrade (or replacement) for my old acoustic guitar and some new equipment but I wasn't certain what I wanted. Chris did a great job at setting me up with what I needed. Every time I visit the shop, Chris makes me feel like a valued customer! I ordered a Seagull with built in Fishman pickup and a Roland AC33 acoustic amp. Delivery was fast and the price was really reasonable. Thank you Chris...my new equipment sounds so good! Custom work was subpar, overly expensive and many bad mistakes were made which he would't fix. Money that was promised to be refunded was later refused to be given back. Was rude , unreliable and was never straight with price and parts ordering. Will never have any more business dealings. I will be paying out of my own pocket to make this expensive guitar right. read more

Chris was extremely helpful when I brought my guitar in. He put in some of the best pickups I have heard and really cleaned up the sound of my cheap electric. Great guy to talk to. The best part about his service was he would text me because I work full-time, the same hours that his shop was open. Awesome, awesome service. Will be back soon! read more
