This place is known by the locals and doesn't disappoint. We arrived in the greeted by some of the servers. The place was a little chaotic because the servers were busy: answering phones, checking people out, and delivering pizzas. While it seemed a little hectic, the place is buzzing with people which was nice to see!. We were seated and ordered the cheese bread. It was good! But the fact that they wanted Me to pay $ for sauce to dip the bread in felt cheap. Just charge more and include the sauce. Done. The place didn't have the best vibe and felt a little outdated. But the pizza was not! It was fresh, the ingredients were quality and the crust- this place has an amazing thin crust. Order it. And the fact they cut the slices in squares made me like this place even more. We ordered a 14 inch for my wife, son and I. It was perfect. The bathroom: Side note: I grade my bathrooms as a 5 Star Bougie (clean, pleasant, smells great, picked up, in order), 3 Star Basic (like home with the basics and equally as clean) or 1 star Bad (filthy, paper towels on the floor, sink is disgusting, smells like a toilet, etc) ... this gets a 1 star Bad! 40 years ago, it was called "Bill's," and it was in the same location.  Hasn't changed much, same counter, same booths, now fairly worn, the faux leather brittle with age.  The home-spun murals of scenes of Italy on the walls are fading. But would the pizza hold up?   Did we love it because it was great?  Or because at the time, it was the only show in town? My sophomore roommate was a guy from Chicago named Joe.   Nice guy.  Talented artist.  Wanted to grow up to be a famous talented artist.  Hope he made it. Most college roommates experience the "either / or" phenomena, meaning that it's pretty normal that one roommate has some money, and the other doesn't.  The cycle reverses on a regular basis. In our dorm room, whoever had the money had the power to dictate toppings:  Joe always got ground beef and diced onion; for me it was Italian sausage and sliced green olives.    Neither of us minded the other's selection. There were a couple of great things about rooming with Joe.   He had a car.   And a very tasty morsel of a girlfriend.   In a college dorm room, it's hard not to become somewhat "familiar" with everything that goes on and Sara was, well (swoon). One night Joe let me use his car (unheard of) so he and Sara could have a special "moment".  He flipped me a sawbuck, too, and said "go have a 'za', and take your time. I started off down College Avenue, it was winter, there were patches of ice, I was very careful with Joe's pride, a green Beetle.   I stopped at the RR crossing for a slow moving freight, minding my own business, anticipating the 'za, when WHAM!  I got re-ended.   As you probably know, the Beetle has the engine in the back, so a whack can cause serious damage. No one was hurt, someone summoned the police, who informed me the drunk driver who just plowed into my roommate's car was "so and so's son", and there was never, ever anything going to come of it. And nothing did.   I got a pizza all by myself, Joe and Sara had their special moment, and if Joe was ever pissed about the accident, he never let on. So nearly 40 years later, I show up at Basil's, order a medium of (my) sausage and green olive, and (Joe's) ground beef and onion, to compare and contrast as it were, to see if this is great pizza or just a glorified memory. I did notice a couple of things while the dude is making the pie, things that (for me) are critical for a good pie: 1) sliced cheese, not shredded, and 2) bulk sausage, pinched by hand, in nice sized pieces. The old Baker's Pride ovens had lost some oomph, it would take a full 15 minutes to bake, with the requisite occasional door opening, and paddle spin. I took my hot pies back to my motel room.   I tried one, then the other.  Then the first, then the other.  They were superb. Great melted cheese that clings to the crust, a cracker-like crust, a big of tang to the sauce, and quality toppings. Could I eat two mediums all by myself?  Nah. But 40 years ago I could. read more

Best pizza in town and in a cozy atmosphere. Service has always been very good and whenever we are looking for pizza, that's where we go.

To start; the Pizza smells amazing and you can smell the magical aroma from blocks away! That being said I have to say I was a bit disappointed. Crust was okay, toppings were a bit sparse. Been wanting to get there for awhile now and now it looks like we have found a place to stop by for a great pizza on the way home to Iowa. Just a few miles off I-35 and well worth it. We had the Hawaiian Pizza and the Garlic Cheese Bread (get the marinara sauce)....very cool pizza dough machine expertly operated that you can watch from a few of the booths. My wife and I were in town and they had a lot of people in the restaurant for a groom's dinner and I had the Popeye's pizza, which was okay, but there was very little flavor, it could have been a dinner rush. I waited 20 minutes every time I wanted my soda refilled. Small problems, but big issues between a 2 and 4 star review. All I want is a beverage with a pizza, and I sucked on ice for 20 minutes before I got a refill. The pizza was very old style, thin crust, the lady that I guessed was the owner was super mean when our party asked to move tables around, even though our party was probably going to spend $400 in one night. It seems that if the late-night scene in Northfield is some sort of constellation, than Basil's pizza could be considered Orion's Belt. None of the bars stay open late enough, but you can guarantee, that once you settle up your tab, thoughts will turn to that damn gyro pizza. I feel very, very bad for my friends who are vegetarians when we go here. I become indigent to the point of foaming at the mouth should they sully even half of my gyro pizza with their vegetables *gag*. And don't forget the tzatziki sauce. This is crucial in your Basil's gyro pizza experience. Order at least two containers for a large. This stuff ties the room together, so to speak. So there you are, on the late night, hanging with all of your drunken cronies, inhaling pizza at a breakneck pace. What, I ask you, keeps this from degenerating into bedlam, sheer madness? I'll tell you. The matronly Greek owner lives upstairs. I can only imagine what her nights are like. Around eleven, or whenever her floorboards begin to rattle, she knows it's time to bail out her deer-in-the-headlights staff. The second she walks in, the riff-raff straighten up. Years ago I had pizza here and it was awesome. So I was excited to go back again during a visit to NFLD. I was so disappointed. Different ingredients perhaps? Everything about it was so different. I couldn't even finish my pizza. The sauce was flavorless as well. Server was so busy and took forever to get beverages, never a refill and the pizza took too long as well. I had high expectations based on the reviews but it was just okay at best. Nothing was disgusting and I didn't feel mistreated which is why I didn't rate it as a one star. The garlic bread tasted frozen, not garlicky enough and you could see just one slice of cheese was laid on top. Pizza was pretty good but not great- Reminded me of Georges a lot. The boyfriend had spaghetti with three small meatballs and the sauce was very watery and pooled at the bottom. My dad had a meatball sub with three small meatballs and some potato chips that very evidently came from a bag. We asked the owner if the Spanakopita was homemade and she said it was bought pre-made and frozen. With the speed of the delivery of food, it made me wonder what else was frozen and just heated up... Waitress was nice though she mentioned how the food was "fake Greek" and was not very knowledgeable of that side of the menu. read more

Food was so-so. Salad with House Dressing was tasteless. My wife and I both had spaghetti and meatballs, and I had extra mushrooms on mine. It was so-so. Meatballs were good. Mushrooms looked like they were still freeze dried. Garlic bread was great. If you go, get extra bread instead of salad. We were offered take-out or eating on their patio. We chose the patio as it was a nice night. After a leisurely dinner we were preparing to leave on our scooters when I had this urge to go to the restroom. I'm 76 and at my age you don't ignore urges. They don't allow you to use their restroom, but you can use their patio. I won't be using their patio, or restaurant, in the future. read more

Basil's looked good, but had not had a recent review so I was a little apprehensive, but am SO glad I went with it. Garlic Cheesebread with Sauce - the bread was good, the sauce was outstanding! It was a true homemade meat sauce. I'm so used to getting generic red sauce, this was such a tasty surprise. Meat Pizza (no salmi) - thin crust and homemade ingredients - fresh sausage, fresh cooked hamburger, and crispy, sliced bacon! I don't like a lot of sauce on my pizza so the combination of crust, sauce, and toppings was perfect for me. I'm actually sad I'm full because I want to keep eating this awesomeness!! I think the prices are relatively fair for what I like. Service is generally good, sometimes it takes a bit for someone to come to your table after seating. Not too bad though. This pizza place is definitely great! I reserved a table for 12 ahead of time for a birthday, and the pizza was great. We got an XL cheese and a L cheese and Knight pizza. While the pizza was definitely great, there were a few caveats. The pizza was cut into a grid, making it hard to eat the middle pieces. Additionally, the old lady gave us the check right after she served our pizza. But beside these things, Basil's lives up to its reputation as a solid pizza choice in Downtown Northfield. read more

My kids' favorite pizza in town. Usually delivers in 30-45 minutes, even on weekends. Usually run about $40 for two pizzas and a big Greek salad. Much better tasting than George's Vineyard which also does Greek food. Also has amazing gyro platters. Only downside is the lack of online ordering, but phone orders go pretty quickly. read more

We just got a carry out from Basil's one evening. The pizza was good, but I didn't feel like it was anything extra special. It is no better than George's Vineyard pizza and costs twice as much. In fact, I actually prefer a Little Cesar's $5 Hot and Ready pizza over Basil's any day. Not that it tastes that much better, but at least there is a balance between taste and cost. The interior of the building was also must less...uh...nice? than I expected reading the reviews on here. It smelled like grease which I find to be gross. Yum Yum Yum, a thousand times, Yum. Such a better option than the other pizza places in town! I love the sweet family that runs this place, and the pizza is always the BEST. The ingredients are always fresh, they don't take TOO long, and you never regret going! Only downside: the restaurant portion is so tiny and always busy. I would not say Basil's is perfection, but the pizza remains near and dear to me even 5 years after leaving Northfield. Hard to write about the pizza that served so many different occasions - fuel for late night paper writing, late-night drunken craving, late-night sober craving, all-purpose comfort food especially during finals, morning-after fix, a welcome break from the dining halls - so many times, Basil's had the calming effect of a valium. My favorite pizza was the gyro pizza, of which I ordered dozens during my time at Carleton. It's exactly what it sounds like, a thin crust pizza topped with slices of lamb meat, spices and cheese, to be dipped in tzatsiki sauce. The tzatsiki, especially, cut the heaviness of the lamb and cheese; many times I just ate the pizza to for the tzatsiki sauce. An odd, but great pizza that I have yet to see replicated anywhere else. It was by no means the perfect pizza, but nobody ever seemed to care, least of all me. Recently went back to Northfield for reunion weekend in June and found myself falling back easily into the old habit of dialing Basil's at midnight. I love this place and hope all of you enjoy it as much as many of us transplants did during our time in Northfield. read more

Good pizza, huge portions, cheap prices. They serve their round pies cut into small square slices -- I'm big on sampling, so this is much better than having to commit to a huge wedge slices! They are open late, which is great given most of northfield sleeps at 5:30. They save us by being open til 1am on mother's day! They allow you to halve a pizza and have it two difference styles. The 6 us shared 2 XL pizzas (4 styles) and a dinner Greek salad and there was plenty to take home. Came out to be under $10/person. I'd stick to the specialty pizzas. We ordered: --Athen's Special (gyro, tomato, mushroom, onion). Delicious. Gyro is cut thick and surprisingly great as a topping. --Hawaiian -- wouldn't order again. canned pineapple, lunch meat ham. --Greek Popeye (spinach, feta, bacon) -- very good. Lots of all three ingredients. We didn't order garlic bread but watching them make it in the kitchen -- it sure looked good! Only complaint: Strange vents blow up your shorts and make the place pretty chilly. Bring a coat. read more
