Basia is very lovely and has a beautiful studio; however, after meeting with her a handful of times and providing her with lace she requested to match my dress, she ultimately lost the $300 of lace that I had custom ordered. I only realized that she had lost the lace after calling her two weeks before my wedding asking where the veil/headpiece was. After calling her multiple times to follow up, she ultimately never called me back to follow up. I ended up buying a headpiece from a different company about a week before the wedding. Basia is not what you expect for a chic wedding veil/headpiece designer. She is an older woman, lives on a 5th floor walk-up with her adorable dog with hip problems (and big acupuncture bills!) She doesn't use email (or Yelp!) and only communicates via phone with a real answering machine. Half of her apartment is her veil studio, which features several mirrors, a lovely vanity and plenty of lace, feather and beading for a bride to sift through. I visited once before i really knew what i wanted for my wedding (i had a simple dress and wanted to have fun with headpieces), tried a few things, and showed her a photo of an elaborate feathered fascinator a friend wore at her wedding which was published in Veranda. Basia said she could do something similar but i was afraid to commission it because i wasn't sure it would be exactly what i wanted. Once i figured out what I wanted-- a cathedral-length mantilla with lace trim that i had tried on at another bridal store (at a hefty $1600). Basia made the same thing with even better quality and she charged me a fraction of the cost. When i went to pick the lace for it, she said I had inspired her to make a feather fascinator! She pulled out the most divine headpiece--it was absolutely stunning! I tried it on and bought it on the spot. The veil and feather headpiece she made me were so special, and so unique, they truly made my wedding look. The photos were fabulous and I got tons of great compliments. I am so happy that I learned of Basia through my friend who read about her online. I bought my dress at Kleinfeld, and when they "jacked me up" they slapped on a veil that was $850. I knew I had to be able to get something cheaper, so I said no thanks. In comes Basia. An older woman with no cell phone, just a landline, who lives in an old walk up apartment with her dog on the UWS. I made an appointment and met with her and showed her my dress. She told me to go to Kleinfeld and ask them the exact color veil that would go with my dress, which I did, to make sure it went with my dress color. I talked through what would look best with her, she is obviously incredibly experienced, and she talked me into a dramatic but simple cathedral length veil to balance out my ornate gown. We also made sure it would only be one layer as I wanted to show off the back of my gown. I could not be happier. The best part is, for my raw edge cathedral length veil, she only charged me $100. I'm so happy I found Basia on yelp. I had searched high and low for a veil in NYC that didn't cost $800. I couldn't find anything, though, in my price range. Then I finally found Basia. Fourth floor walk up on the UWS, you'll meet her in her own apartment, brimming with veils. I brought my mom and my wedding dress and Basia pulled two veils for me that she envisioned once seeing the dress in person. One of the two was perfection. It took a total of maybe 10 minutes and I was so thrilled. She ordered the veil for me and a month or so later it arrived. Best of all, a long floor-length trailing veil cost $220. Unheard of! She is located on the 5th floor of a residential building with no elevator. Bacia said it was fine to bring my dress and I was able to try it in while we discussed veil options. I had something specific in mind, but Bacia gave me her opinion and many options. Basia has a large selection of fabric, colors, trim & embellishments to choose from! Since the veil is custom she can cut it to any length or add trim/embellishment as desired. The veil was ready on time and I paid half of what I would've paid anywhere else for similar quality. She was flexible in appointment times and warned me of the rickety apartment building and many steps - I wasn't sure what to expect. She has partitioned her apartment so that the "shop" is in the living room. I was surprised at how many veils she had there. So I didn't end up purchasing a belt/sash from Basia because it would have been a little out of my price range ($150; I want to spend less than that, ha!) but I'm still giving her 5 stars because she was a pleasure to work with. From the moment I called her, she had such a pleasant voice (no email or anything; you must call!). She's probably about 70ish years old so I love the fact that she's running this business and still doing her thang! :D We made an appointment and she asked me if my mother, who would be joining me, could walk up 4 flights of stairs (there's no elevator!). I appreciated her consideration. :) She lives in an old school building on the upper west side but her apartment is lovely (she runs the business out of her home). She has a nice set up for wedding accessories as she does belts/sashes, veils, and head pieces. She's very detailed in terms of our conversation when we were there. She took notes and even started drawing some pictures. Of course, it is helpful for you to have pictures to show her! But I am sure she can also design something for you or show you many samples as she did for me. I think it'd be best to tell her your budget upfront which I forgot to do. I am interested in spending less than $100 and she definitely has options for that price range but they won't be as grand, so to speak, so it's really about what you're looking for. But she does all the work herself, and that is surely to be valued! She was completely nice at recommending another store to go to between 37th and 38th on 6th ave that has trimmings (M & J Trimmings) where one could buy accessories for the belt except it'd be DIY! All in all, Basia is an honest and very friendly person to work with. I can see why she's gotten so many outstanding reviews! read more
