We have them prune our trees annually as needed, and they do a free annual inspection plus an extra one before expected storms to check for stability. They also treat our trees to prevent disease; our birch trees have been healthy while others in our neighborhood had to be removed. We have had only two arborists in that time, and the same lead man for about 12 years, who are very knowledgeable and will work with me to get the result I want, whether a light or heavy pruning and shaping. Requested a competive quote since the multiple 100 foot trees are aged out and unsafe. For 30 years I have protected and cared for the trees. The Barlett rep gave me a story that they preserve trees not remove them. My house and family are at risk. The Barlett rep was rude and arrogant so I selected a more professional arborist. This is an update about the service I received. After I left my first review the manager called me to answer my questions. I expressed my frustration and told him that it was too bad that when one of his expert goes on vacation, no one takes over to keep the customer updated of the work. At the end I am happy with their service but I went through some annoying moments of stress, I wish I had not experienced. These guys literally went out on a limb in climbing those Oak trees to remove dead wood and make the Oaks more balanced. Their arborist Juan Ochoa is the best, very pleasant, professional and called me back even after hours to respond to my inquiry. They are pricy, probably due to full insurance coverage and Workmen's Comp, but did throw in some free branch and trunk removals. Cleaned up after themselves at the end of the day. I have enjoyed their services since 2013 for pruning annual caterpillar control and prevention of Sudden Oak Death. Highly recommended. read more

Bartlett Tree Experts have the correct word "experts" in their name. I just had my 5 year "anniversary" with them and I'm looking forward to many more years. I had a different tree company coming out for over 3 years for a sickly oak tree. It never got better under their care. I called Bartlett and Adam Clarke came out and took twig samples, (something the other company never did). The results came back and a plan was written up and implemented. It took awhile but with scheduled treatments my tree looks so healthy! Bartlett also takes care of my Podocarpus trees, keeping them healthy and have done a pruning. Joe came out and checked out a tree that has been leaking sap/honeysuckle for the first time in 9 years. He identified the tree and said that the problem is insects. He assured me that the tree is resilient and the insects will be gone in about a week and the leaking will stop. He recommended a treatment during the rainy season to help with the insects next year. We had Bartlett Tree for many years and they did quality work, albeit expensive compared to others. We liked the knowledgeable professional account managers who paid regular visits to keep tabs on our heritage oaks. Then, we experienced frequent account manager turnover, the regular fertilizer and pesticide service that used to take a tech several hours was "done" in 8 minutes, and we were billed the full amount, twice! The account manager argued with me about the bill even after I sent him video from our Nest camera proving that the tech drove in and out of our driveway and that I'd paid once. We terminated the contract and the account manager left a rude voice mail message saying how he had been excellent! I'd give zero stars to him and five to the tech who used to come to our property. read more

Four of my neighbors use Bartlett in San Rafael, and their trees all look amazing: clearly the work of master arborists. So, I contacted them to do major pruning on a couple of trees. The biggest issue was our gorgeous Italian stone pine, which has been growing so robustly that it threatened to block our valley view and reduce the value of our house. But the pine is so beautiful that I worried about a "hatchet job" which would look awful and possibly harm the tree. Instead, Bartlett's expert team carefully cut back to top of the tree, leaving many branches to cover the cuts, keeping the tree healthy, and providing us with many more years of our beautiful view -- until the next trimming by Bartlett! read more

Our HOA hired Bartlett to cut down a huge old Bay tree on the hill behind our townhome that had suffered a quick death from the drought and other ailments. (So sad to see it go from a healthy green to totally brown in just a year after watching it grow so tall and beautiful for 23 years!) Some years back I contacted Bartlett's and scheduled an appointment for someone to come to my home and inspect some trees I was worried about. Adam Clarke came and performed a close inspection of my privet hedge and my dogwood which was erratic in its annual bloom. Adam was polite & professional and drew up treatment plans for addressing the issues of the trees mentioned. I have called Adam on other occasions as other tree/plant issues have arisen and he immediately responds & sets a time to come assess the situation. His botanical knowledge is expansive. He always notifies me ahead of a scheduled treatment who is coming & when. I would simply avoid Bartlett Tree Experts. Not sure how much merit I would put into the 5 star reviews. On August 14th I established an appointment to have them examine a Strawberry Tree in our yard which was in distress. An assistent from Bartlett called and said due to the heavy smoke my Sept 16th appointment was cancelled. I was rescheduled for the end of September. I called to confirm this appointment today. They have no record of an appointment. They checked on the mix up. I was told the Arborist came on Sept 14th, 2 days before the appoinment that they cancelled. He was "never" going to come back again due to a dog. First, if you come on the "wrong" day, and you do not call from your "cell phone" to my number which you have, just how do you expect someone is going to know you are here. Second, you insist on having an email address. Just how is sending an email going to let me know you are 2 days early. As I understand things, also because I didn't give you an email you will never come back. These sound a lot like the rants of a child. Apparently you do not think my time is just as valuable as your time? I suggest you get competent help in your office, keep your appointments and don't blame the customer when you are the one in the wrong. Maybe then you might have a modicum of customer service. read more

I am updating a review on a Ca Live Oak treatment I just found the receipt dated 11/16/2016 They had been treating a large very important tree that gave privacy, shade, and bird,squirrell,deer food. It was magnificient and cherished by me in past 15 years. Well......I didn't see the tiny holes at the base, noticed some dying outer branches/leaves, and had them look at the tree with hopes of keeping it alive. It still had lots of very dark green shiny healthy looking leaves on it, as I fertilized many plants 30ft above it and over 10 ft away. Bartlett drilled holes and pumped in something to kill beetles/borers, and decided it needed fertilizer pumped into ground. hmmmmmmm I thought.... no phosphorous defiencey with twice yearly Agrifos (15 yrs worth) , and nitrogen in my other plants around it.....ok $105 I pay to Bartlett for Boost NK Liquid 20-0-06 "to help improve plant health" woooops its a tree not a plant? hey wait isnt that too much nitrogen for a sick tree? I am looking at the receipt as I type this. let me call my aborist/doctor friend who is the expert in S.O.D. and Oaks health and ask about proper fertilizers for sick Oaks. Well YES it is too much nitrogen according to the Author/teacher Arborist PHD told me. moral of story do homework on what you are getting up front even if it takes time. read more

My wife and I are extremely disappointed by Bartlett's increase in the spraying (15 minute job spraying from a portable back pack from the ground up 10 feet on the tree) of an Oak Tree for Sudden Oak Death Syndrome. The increase for this minimal service is $74.00 for two applications. Increase in cost of labor, materials , time etc. are the excuses I encountered from "Adam" the arborist who took over from Mike Green. My wife and I are both "seniors" and have been dismissed even though we have been loyal customers of Bartlett for 30 years!! This is bad business and I would suggest one look elsewhere for your "expert" tree service as this is no longer a "service" to the trees or customers!! SUCKS BIG TIME! read more

He has provided the most comprehensive proposals of any arborist that I have worked with. It is clear what each tree needs and why, there are no unnecessary extras, and bids are price competitive. He has accommodated and worked around complex requests and schedules. He spent extraordinary effort getting city and encroachment permits to remove a very large tree, and worked with a couple of bee keepers to find the best solution to save a large hive. Bartlett has helped me maintain the trees on our lot for several years. We had a CA oak that was heavily damaged by a storm and they were able to save the tree. Because it is a prominent tree in our front yard, they also preserved our curb appeal. I would like to plant some additional trees for privacy and shade and they are coming out to advise me on good options for that area of our yard. I wanted to update this review. All of the trees that Bartlett trimmed are doing wonderfully. One tree in particular was spindly and I was thinking of removing it. Bartlett suggested that we trimit and see how it does. Two rosemary bushes planted at residence on April 17, 2020, there was an issue on regarding the placement and it took 18 days for the representative to return my call. One of the bushes is dying and the Bartlett representative, Asher, who did the work stated the plant did not look as healthy as the other plant (which is planted approximately two feet away) and to give it a couple of months, I asked for a replacement plant (please note, these plants were $275.53 each) but I was told Bartlett does not guarantee their plants, even after Asher said the plant does not look good. It has been five months and the plant in question is slowly dying while the other looks very healthy. I filed a "dispute" with the credit card company in mid August 2020 for the cost of the one dying plant. Bartlett office in San Rafael called me on August 12, 2020 asking me what I would like to see happen, I told her John and I want the plant removed and the funds refunded to the credit card for the one plant, she agreed but said the representative had to come out and look at the plant, again. The representative arrived at 8:00AM, August 26, 2020, as scheduled, looked at the plant, and said to give it until January 2021. This is an unacceptable conclusion. read more

I have mixed feelings about this company. Initially I was pleased with their arborist, who told me that I didn't need to remove a large tree that Treemasters was chomping at the bit to take down. On the other hand, although I told them year after year that my budget was tight and my objective only the health of my trees, they recommended numerous annual treatments and services that I've since learned are not best practices and are just a way to drum up fees. No harm was done to my trees, but I spent close to a thousand a year that I didn't need to spend. I'm now using Marin Tree Service. read more

Jon has walked our property with us many times and helped us prioritize care -- identifying trees that are diseased, at risk, a safety concern, and/or important trees that could use special attention. We have used Bartlett services on our heavily treed lot in Mill Valley for something like 20 years plus. We have from time to time used other services, and some are quite satisfactory. But with the onset of sudden oak disease and the need for caterpillar control, special fertilizing, etc. we have depended more on Bartlett for the last 5 or more years, in applications to add longevity to our native oaks. Yes, the company's services are not inexpensive. Yes, one can get more aggressive pricing from local firms that do not carry a large national firm's operating and research overhead. But Bartlett has never let us down, or let us feel that the company would not stand behind the work we pay for -- and I much prefer using firms for dangerous tree service that are professional, adequately insured, and reliable. If you have disease or pest control problems with your tree cover, Bartlett can bring to bear a first-rate research and application team with experience on a nationwide basis. Finally, Bartlett is fortunate to have here in our own San Rafael office people who are qualified, thoughtful, and diligent. As long as we can afford the services, we'll probably consider Bartlett for most of our needs. read more

I have used Bartlett Tree Experts many times over the last few years. I have had nothing but good experiences with their services. They invest a lot of time and expense to keep ther people up to date on the best practices for keeping your trees healthy. Bartlett recently had to take down a very large Monterey pine that was very close to my house and had started to decline. It was a very delicate procedure so close to the house and they performed it without a hitch. Bartlett also does maintenance work on the trees in my yard. There was another reviewer who stated that they didn't trim the person's tree to their liking. Barlett has been caring for my trees for years and they know what they are doing to trim trees for maximum health and beauty. My trees are beautiful and I have confidence that they are healthy and I won't have any nasty surprises from a tree falling over because if was diseased. Bartlett isn't the cheapest company. They are the best. Update 34/1/2011: In the recent storms many trees and limbs were blown down around the county. The fact that none of the trees on my property suffered damage is a testimony to the expert care of Bartlett Tree Experts. I no longer worry that there is hidden disease in any of my trees. I had a great experience with Bartlett. My father had always used them and when the time came to spruce up the property last year, I found them very easy to work with. The Bartlett crew was patient and agreeable the entire time, stopping their work while I hemmed and hawed about branch height and how any cutting would affect the view.
