First of all, these were the best fries I've had in AGES! Popped in for dinner with my wife and kid on a road trip. Ordered three burgers, three drinks, and a side of fries from the polite, efficient young woman at the counter and our order was ready just as quickly as it would have been at McDonald's or some other mediocre chain. We found Bartels on Yelp while moving my mother's baby grand piano from Stockton, CA to the Portland area. My brother's Giant burger is a better deal as it's $5.75 vs my regular at $4.50, but has twice the meat. My brother ordered the meal and we split the fries, which we ordered extra crispy based on reviews. We liked them! Thin and perfectly crispy and ate them with fry sauce. We got a free drink upgrade from a small to a medium by checking into Yelp! The guy taking our order didn't know about the Yelp deal, but gave it to us. Our burgers were tasty! My brother's had 2 slices of cheese on it and I ordered pickles on mine, which are free and not on the menu. I'm allergic to a bunch of stuff but added bacon to mine and my brother had the works plus bacon and cheese. WAY better than a chain burger, so juicy they dripped even though they were cooked well. Apparently the "giant burger" patties have a different composition than the regular ones. Not a fan of the fries. We were craving a good hamburger while visiting Redding and a local insisted we try out this burger joint. Tucked into a nondescript standalone building, this place is a gem. On the corner of Hilltop and Lake. Only 3 booths inside, it's mostly take-out. While the building is older, it was clean inside and it didn't have that distinctive odour of stale grease that some mom and pop establishments have. If anything, it had the air of a 1970's hangout. You could envision seventies cars stuffed with teenagers, munching on yummies. This place is not all about the decor, It's all about the food. It's been working for them for 43 years, as of 2019. The chef/order taker was friendly and helpful to us newbies. They carefully explained the 'specials' and suggested their fries sauce instead of ketchup. Good suggestion. My companions and I all ordered lettuce wrap burgers. The meat was juicy and perfectly cooked, to order. Not too saucy that it dripped all over you but saucy enough to make it good. They knew how to tightly wrap the lettuce wrap as well. Bonus points. The fries were crispy and the fries sauce was yummy. My friends ordered small milkshakes and said they were delicious. I am glad I didn't order one, I would have been stuffed to the gills. read more

Great burgers, delicious fries and good, efficient, friendly service. We came on a Sunday at about 12:30, and there were no customers. But the place quickly filled up, with a line out the door. To be fair this place is a solid 4 and didn't make a 5 for a couple reasons.. first the positive.. the food was very good, it was cooked mostly to order, and there was a lot of it and they were good with changes like extra onions. Fixings are limited but free. The service and staff were super friendly and none of my negatives are about them so there's that. On negative side, the burgers are pricey at about $11.50 for the meal after everything is counted though the menu shows cheaper. Also, I noticed two unfixed bullet holes in their front window after I sat down which doesn't give one a warm and fuzzy. It's also hard to get into from certain directions though that's not on them per se. Overall I'd go back and would recommend it for a good, greasy, guilty pleasure burger. Plus I got to see someone start their challenge but with 13 patties.. wish I could've stayed to see how he did! read more

Great environment. It is and does feel like a hometown, wholesome, family burger joint. They take your order and throw your food on the grill right in front of you. The burger was pretty good, fresh meat, fresh veggies. Good fries. I wish I had known I had to ask for 1,000 Island. My only complaint was that I asked for easy ice and my drink was 80% ice. I prefer more soda than ice, but I suppose "easy ice" is in the eye of the beholder. Lol. I would like to return to try and beat the posted record on the wall. Someone ate a burger with 10 patties in 15 minutes. Probably a $30 burger, but worth the novelty. I would recommend checking it out. 4/5. read more

I used to go to Bartel's in the early '80s for lunch when I worked in Redding. Now I've retired here 35 years later, and thought I'd see if it was as good as I remembered. Yep. I had the Giant burger with pepper jack and some fries. The burger is a good old messy American burger, handmade, hefty meat patty, and with your classic fresh tomato, iceberg lettuce and onion slice. The fries are fresh and hot and tasty with their special fry sauce. A bad day at Bartel's is better than the best day at a corporate burger chain like McDonald's or Wendy's. Go. read more

We were in Redding visiting family and the teenager in the bunch suggested Bartels. The name alone gets me because it's a family name, but I will beg to go back whenever we visit Redding. The restaurant is a throwback to a different time. The inside is tiny, they have less than 10 items on the letter board menu, and there are 2 bullet or BB holes in a window. The burgers are a bite of nostalgia, delicious beef, and the grease of a well used griddle. The fries can stand up to any chain or fancier place with $20 burgers. The kitchen was disgusting the workers looked like they hadn't showered and the restaurant itself had not been cleaned. Something like that will make me not want to return. We visited Bartels tonight and the 2 ladies working were very pleasant. My daughter and I both ordered Big Burgers, huge mistake!!!! Lol. When they say "BIG" burger they are not joking around. Burger was cooked exactly how we wanted to with the poblano pepper added to mine and bacon to my daughters. The fries were cooked as requested, crispy!!! I have been coming here for years. The hamburgers are good, but they are charging an additional 3% pass through fee if you use your credit card. When the nice young woman working the counter told me how much my order was I handed her my credit card for our large order. when she asked me to sign the receipt that came out of the card reader (I can't think of another place off the top of my head where I have to physically sign a receipt except here) and the price on the receipt was different that what she told me the total was when she rang up our order. I questioned it and she pointed to a sign that said they are going to charge 3% if I didn't use cash. I was tempted to have her cancel and reverse the credit card and simply pay cash, but she was a nice young woman and I didn't want to have her going through all that, so I just signed the receipt and paid the charge. If a hole in the wall restaurant, or any business for that matter wants to charge the customer a pass through business expense they should clearly tell that to the customer........ there will be an additional credit card pass through charge. I'm tired of businesses not telling me that there will be an additional charge until after the charge has been run through. Just tell me there is going to be a charge when I hand you my card and I will pull out the cash. read more

Bartel's has always been one of my favorite burger joints but I heard the rumors. "It's just not as good as it used to be!" Maybe, subconsciously, that's what's been keeping me away. To see for myself, I stopped by this evening to, well, see for myself. IT AIN'T TRUE!! I had a giant cheeseburger with everything but tomato and it was just as sloppy and juicy as I remember. A little heavy on the onion, yeah, but some people like that. The fries are nothing special, really, but the sauce helps. This is the second time that I have eaten here and both times I have enjoyed my meals. The hamburgers were excellent both times. Because the facility is not very large and it looks similar to a "Frosty" type hamburger spot, I was really surprised that their beef patties are hand formed into the patties. That really impressed me. I like to chew my food and those pre-formed patties are consistently full of gristle and other unidentifiable but difficult to chew pieces. The hamburgers I enjoyed at Giant Burger were large, had great hand formed beef patties that were tender, flavorful and juicy. If you're looking for a really good old fashion hamburger this is not the place to go! My husband and I have been wanting to try their burgers since we moved to town and decided to finally do it last night, it was awful. Everything is pre-packaged, they don't have onion rings and their prices are absolutely obscene. My husband and I got one regular burger each and made it a small meal and we would have been better off going to McDonald's. read more

It had been a while since I had a Bartel's burger & I was feeling nostalgic. My last Bartel's burger was devoured at the location across from Shasta High on Eureka Way while skipping 4th period drama class. I won't give the year but let's just say, it's been a while. Unfortunately, my memory of Bartel's was better than the actual experience I had this past Saturday but it was still good for sure. First off, the 2 gals behind the counter were borderline rude. The way they acted reminded me of why I moved out of Redding in the first place. Lot's of attitude & staring & eye rolling with no good reason AT ALL. Not sure what that was all about. Moving on... My burger was quite delicious which is the most important thing right? Right. The fries were....fries. The most redeeming part of the fries was the special, secret sauce that accompanied them. I'm pretty sure it's just mayo & ketchup mixed together but it is still special nonetheless. The strawberry shake was....strawberry shake. Nothing spectacular. Bartel's is still damn good don't get me wrong. If you are thinking of a burger in Redding, don't waste your time on stupid fast food chains. Consider Bartel's. read more

With burgers that rival elementary school cafeterias every where this place is sure to wreck your wallet and your colon. Upon entering the dirty restaurant we were greeted by "we're out of fries" by a grumpy cashier who proceeded to stare us down as we checked out the menu. The woman that took our order treated us as if we drop kicked a box full of the cutest kittens. After spending 4.50 for a regular burger the "giant burgers" we received where far from giant and were very boring. I love seeing frozen patty discs clinking on the griddle! The outside of the building claims that they have good old fashioned burgers but I did not realize that old fashioned burgers were delivered by the SYSCO corporation. I have been here twice once five years ago and once today last time they had fries which are not worth the price. read more
