What a disappointment. The service was extremely slow. Would not recommend. You are better of at Wendy's.

My wife and I recently moved here and have been working hard and just did not want to cook dinner the other night. We didn't want to go to a chain or get fast-food burgers, so this fit the bill. What you get is a very basic burger, cooked on a griddle the way you'd get one at an ordinary diner, with some customization options, but nothing fancy. The buns are toasted and the meat is cooked to well-done, unless you order differently. Basically, if you want haute cuisine, this is not the place. What it is, though, is a tasty simple burger made to order. It's not Umami Burger, or even In-n-Out, but it hits the spot and is a great alternative when you're sick of fancy burgers. I ordered their Giant Burger with an extra patty and cheese. It came with lots of tomato, onion, and lettuce and the proportions were just right for a decent burger. A two-patty burger this size was completely filling, leaving just enough room for the fries. Speaking of fries, they also are nothing special, at least until you eat one. They are just ordinary fries, but they're actually cooked right. Not too brown, and not underdone. They are cooked to Goldilocks' "just right." What this means is that every last fry is crispy salty perfection. If you ask, they'll give you their secret fry sauce, which was better than ketchup. The employees were very nice, and willing to chat a bit since it wasn't very busy. My only criticism is that the exterior of the building is gross. It really needs a good cleaning (or pressure-wash) to get the years of accumulated grime and dead bugs off the awning. read more

Absolutely one of the best burgers in town-- fresh not frozen meat from R&R cooked to order, add your favorite toppings in short: mouth-watering burger juicy burgers that will drip down your arm--- scrumptious! This is an-old school burger joint, with very limited seating inside (and some outdoors in warmer seasons--but loud on bustling Lake Avenue.) Don't expect much glamour from this historic Redding hole--in-the-wall cooked in front of you grilled burgers. The shakes are made the old fashioned way-- real ice cream & milk-- both chocolate and vanilla are equally delicious! The only "downs" on Bartels is you'll pay for a quality burger $5.95 and the french fries are not bad, but not as good as they could be. (But nothing that homemade fry sauce or catsup can't fix). A much better meal than In-n-Out or Five Guys and I prefer to shop local---especially when it's better. The grill masters will deliver your meal to your table--- with a smile. read more

I went by on a Thursday evening. Oct 7th. I ordered the Giant Burger meal with American cheese. 3 other people came in after me and placed orders. They all got their food and left. Finally, they brought a bag out to "Tim". An easy mistake so I took the bag and walked to my car. Inside was 2 burgers neither of which was like what I ordered. I went back to point out a mistake. They immediately got defensive and told me that they made what was scribbled on a small piece of paper. I said that it was not what I ordered. I pushed to bag to them, they pushed it back. Eventually, the food was on the floor. They started yelling that I should leave and never come back. Never an offer to fix the order or refund. Just get out and don't come back. I first went there way back in 1995 or so. Not to worry, I won't ever come back. read more

This place was recommended by a friend who grew up in Redding and since I happened to be up there, I decided to stop in. Like others have said, it's quite small. There isn't a huge amount of parking, either (although 15 people inside would feel packed so it doesn't need much parking). The burger was able to be cooked to order (I got mine medium....sensitive stomach + long drive = play it safe) and the fries came straight out of the fryer and onto the plate. I went for the Giant Burger with pepper jack cheese and grilled onions (which they put on the grill in front of me and grilled, and then grilled the burger in the juices from the caramelized onions). I'm not a big fan of fries, so I only ate less than a dozen of them but they were good. Next time I'm in Redding I'll try to make it out to Bartel's again. Driving up to Oregon for a Rogue River rafting adventure means a pit stop in Redding. A bit of yelp search pointed us to Bartel's, a place that probably hasn't changed since the '70s. I loved the formica countertops and the fact that you could order a bloody rare burger, which isn't something you see all the time in restaurants. The postage stamp of a place has a very basic menu; burgers, fries and shakes. In order to avoid smelling like meat for the rest of our trip, we opted to sit at a table outside and received wonderful service. The burgers came to us just as we ordered, mine rare and my husband's medium rare. The hand made milkshake was thick and the fries were right out of the fryer. In town for a few days, yelp'n around for cheap meals. The reviews weren't overwhelmingly positive, but I'm not sure why. I got a giant (as opposed to regular) burger with fries and a drink. The burger was cooked to order which was medium. I was sitting at the counter watching the girl cook the burgers and I had no confidence that she could cook this thing properly, but she actually nailed it! Medium, not med rare or med well. So that was a nice surprise. Juicy, too. They use purple onions, fresh green leaf lettuce, and keep the tomatoes on ice; those are all good quality indicators to me. Also the fries were hot and properly cooked, which I also doubted was going to be the case since there's no timer and she actually stirred them, stabbed at them with the scooper, while they were cooking. The special sauce for the fries was good, it did taste like ketchup and mayo mixed, but it's sitting out on the counter so I doubt there could be mayo in it. There's not much to say about the iced tea, it was good, not at all rancid as in so many places that are not careful to clean the container daily. The parking lot is small and the seating area is smaller. If they were busy you'd have to get it to go. There is outdoor seating as well. So all in all, I was skeptical but my doubts were unfounded, they did a great job! not necessarily the warmest greeting, but they were friendly enough. Definitely would come back! read more

Just a good nothing fancy place to get a burger. They've been doing it that way for a long time and they do a great job, always get the giant burger. Price wise you spend a little more than some places but suck it up, it's worth trying for the quality of taste. read more

Some things don't change. Bartels still delivers a great burger, fries & milkshake. Growing up this was always a treat and they still deliver the same good quality. Ask for your shake thick, fries crispy, and definitely some fry sauce. Know that it can get busy, locals know this and plan an extra few minutes since it is cooked to order. (There could be a line at lunchtime.) The regular burger is big- so the BIG burger is huge. Pam and crew at the Lake location are always super nice. :) read more

Ordered giant burger with cheese, bacon, & grilled onion, and it was quite good. You are charged extra for add ins like cheese and bacon. Also ordered a Polish dog... My recommendation is skip the pseudo-Polish dog and go for the burger. Fries were very average. read more

First time here and was in the mood for a milkshake. Looked on yelp and didn't want to go to a food chain so I decided to stop here. Got a burger and fries while we were here. Not a good value, cheese isn't melted on burger, milkshake was far from what A milkshake should taste like, fries were good and the employees were very friendly, hence the three stars. Stopped here on a road trip and the food was awesome! Hubby had a giant burger and could not finish it. I had a regular and it filled me up. The fries are divine! Another review called them "goldilocks fries" they were JUST RIGHT! So true! Cooked to a perfect golden without over cooking. I ordered the chocolate shake but my hubby drank most of it. This place was not 4 stars. If you want a place that does not follow basic food safety standards then go here. I watched the main kitchen staff run their hands under water, with no soap, for literally a second and then proceed to touch their street clothes before moving onto touching the food they were going to serve with their bare hands. The milk shake is just soft serve ice cream that was swirled in a cup. The burger was your garden variety $1 burger, nothing to write home about. I like mom & pop shops but I would have been better off going to In & Out, where I would have saved money and ended up with food I could eat. read more

For its size, the city of Redding doesn't fall short when it comes to burger joints. Nearly every well-known chain can be found within a five mile radius. What should be pointed out is the number of quality LOCAL restaurants in town. Bartel's Burger is up there with the best of 'em. The burgers are tasty and reasonably priced for the amount of food you get. The fries are nothing special, but they do get bumped up a notch or two with the "special" sauce. Fountain drinks are poured for you and are routinely filled with waaay too much ice. Definitely a strike against Bartel's when you're diving into one of their "giant" burgers. In short, go for the burgers. Don't expect to be wowed by anything else the place offers. read more

This is one of my favorite burger places in Redding. The burgers are outstanding. They are large and heavy. You can request pepper jack cheese or cheddar. I always get pepper jack. The fries are crispy and served hot. It's a classic drive up diner and the servers are friendly and helpful. I highly recommend Bartel's! read more

Wow-- how do you spell disappointed? I've lived 5 minutes from this Bartels for over 4 years - it was my Go To Burger joint / it was where I took any visitors from out of the area - and actually some locals who had never been here b4-- don't know what happened but I just made my last order . I always bought the " big burger" I think it was at least 1/3 - to 1/2 lb burger . Always ordered to Perfection / medium rare with all the fixings onions -lettuce -tomato , and for me just mustard. Although they do have a " special" sauce . Somewhat like thousand island dressing - and the fries ?? Sensational! Along with the special sauce for dipping. Last night I had a hankering for a big fat juicy burger - I usually cud get two meals out of the big one . IDK if they've changed meat distribution or cut back on quality to save a dime - whatever ?? I cud have gone up the street to Carl's Jr. For a burger half the price of $11.00 and purchased a burger - fries & a drink !!
