When we first went to bartaco after it opened, I would have given it 5 stars. Bartender was fantastic, drinks fantastic, and pork belly tacos, as advertised were the best item on the menu. Since then we'd been a few times. Last night, 3 stars might be even too much. When we were waiting for our table at the hostess stand, we and another party saw a mouse. My husband stated he thought it ran over his foot. I asked if we should go... but as we are veterans of living in the city and mice being pretty normal, we decided to stay. Maybe we should have gone to have a better night. Service at the start was fine, but then drinks did not come until after the first round of food. In addition, as I've seen from a few reviews here, we received an additional tray of tacos that was not ours, which a runner then took away and looked to serve to the correct table. Having worked in the restaurant industry, I know you never take a plate of food from one table and move it to another. Everything came out within 7 to 10 minutes, which was great, but a few of the tacos seemed like they had been sitting and were soggy which I took to mean they were sitting prepped in the kitchen and just popped on the table. Who knows. Because then when we ordered a few more tacos, we waited about 20 minutes before starting to look around and our server not once making eye contact. 10 minutes later, my husband and daughter left to go to the bookstore while I waited for the check and as soon as they had left, the tacos came out, in a to go box. The server did not offer to do anything in regards to the long wait time, which even if I wouldn't have taken, should have been addressed. We won't be coming back for a long time... It seems they've lost their way. If you do go...the pork belly taco and the crispy oyster taco were both delicious (even if soggy). read more

I haven't written a Yelp review in years, but my experience at this restaurant yesterday was definitely noteworthy. Putting aside the value of food knowing off the bat the prices are a little ridiculous for the portion sizes My husband received a $50 discount the other day and to celebrate my recent employment after being unemployed for a while we decided to come back here after having an okay experience the first time. Well, the vibes were weird. When we first sat down a server came over and brought us chips and guacamole and said, "here you go". We thought this was some kind of daily special they're running and thought that was cool. Until a few minutes later our main server comes over looking embarrassed and informs us the chips and guacamole was actually meant for a different table and tells us it's fine. I looked at my husband like oh wow guess we lucked out? They previously had a order food and drinks via QR code from your table, but it seems like that's not a thing anymore so that may have attributed to what seemed like some logistical or managerial issues. A few minutes later another server tried to give us different food when we hadn't even ordered yet. When we actually did order and received our food it was disappointing. I found a hard round black thing in the ceviche which my husband guessed could have been part of the avocado which I really hoped because I didn't want to think what else it could be. The tamale was flavorless and watery. The birria was actually decent. The tacos were okay. The free chips and guacamole were tasty. But the chips that came with the ceviche were stale so it seems like that's hit or miss. We ordered the seasonal fruit with tajin. The fruit was good, but didn't have any tajin. Overall I left feeling underwhelmed especially for the prices and portion sizes and quality. Also we didn't have any utensils or napkins at our table and asked for napkins when we started eating the chips and guacamole. One server mentioned that we should be getting utensils, but when our main food arrived we still weren't given utensils. Once we were able to flag down our main server she was apologetic and said the tables should have a utensil bucket prepped. But, none of the three or four servers coming to our table noticed which seemed odd. Not planning a return visit any time soon. read more

Was excited to hear Bartaco opened in Hingham since we love their Seaport location, however this location slightly misses the mark. There were issues with some of the tacos. We didn't enjoy their sesame ribeye at all. The meat was unfortunately dry, and the kimchi topping was rather flavorless. The Birria tacos are usually solid but were dry this time. I did enjoy their Salsa Roja + Chips and Pork Belly Tacos though. Those are always delicious. Ordering is easy since they let you pay individually using a QR code, however for large parties it can get a bit confusing who ordered what since they ignore the names on the orders. Would recommend the staff to mention the names on the orders when delivering as it would've saved us and them a headache. read more

This was my third experience with Bartaco, the first two being in Boston and Chicago. Both of these have been great-to-fantastic. The Hingham location overall, however, was a few hairs below what I've come to expect, more on that later. I had the opportunity to try the cucumber salad, as well as the pork belly, duck, and chorizo tacos. To start, we have the cucumber salad: a dish that holds a lot of promise but falls and trips into a vat of vinegar, and gets out still dripping. The use of acid was heavy enough to warrant a "team lift" icon. Unfortunately, said acid overpowered anything else the dish had going for it. The Chorizo taco was a case of user error. Keep in mind, this is Argentine-style, which is considerably milder and more delicate than Spanish-style. While I prefer bolder flavors, the taco was well balanced with the use of onion, cilantro, and sauce. Next is the duck taco. Duck is a protein that has great flavor, but in my opinion can be easy to overpower. Thus, I appreciate that this taco didn't have so much going on that the meat's flavor was covered by external elements. The tamarind and caramelized onions gave whispers of sweet and tangy. However, on the flip side, I felt the meat didn't quite have those lovely, roasty, Maillard notes, and was missing an element of contrast, namely something crisp and fresh. When it comes to the pork belly taco, I have no notes. This one was utter perfection, and quite frankly, I wish I'd ordered all three as pork belly. Maybe it was just well-executed, maybe I just love pork belly way too much. Whatever the case, this one was a standout for the night. Now, me being me, I wouldn't skip dessert, so I ordered the churros. These were good, but not great. They seemed to be fresh, had great flavor, and the dipping sauce was fantastic. At the same time, they were nothing worth raving or writing home about. Next, let me talk about the service. It was very friendly and polite, but a bit slow with getting the food taking a bit longer than I would've expected. This is compounded by experiences at other locations, and the fact that the restaurant wasn't very busy at the time. The interior is modern and laid-back, and feels almost like a place that could be entirely outdoors. This is thanks to the decor and the use of wicker. Final verdict: The other Bartacos I've been to have set a high bar. This bar was, unfortunately, a little too high for this specific location. Thus, if I am to make a return visit, it would be to the ones downtown. read more

Although our lunch visit was several weeks ago now, I'm left with a great impression of this still relatively new spot at Derby Street. My order were the yummy Baja fish tacos and for Tom, the spicy shrimp tacos. He drank ice water and I had a spicy margarita. Both our dishes were delicious. My margarita was quite tasty. I don't love the ordering system which is to mark down your own food selections but I suppose it cuts down on any wait staff error. The ambiance is lovely. Our server was attentive and kind. We met the manager on our way out who was welcoming and personable. We didn't have a lot of time to linger that day but we very much look forward to a more leisurely visit in the near future. Meh, Bartaco Bartaco just opened in Derby Street Shops which is phenomenal for all you shopaholics. It's another location to their Seaport one. But, on a Saturday night which to my surprise was extremely busy, slow service and cold tacos. Plus when you order their "guacamole and chips" you get taco shells rather than the average Tostitos. Service was extremely slow at the bar. I had to call on a Manager to wipe down where we seating since the bartenders was shaking up some cocktails. So excited to have a bartaco on the South Shore! I've been to the other Boston locations a couple times, so I made a point to give the new Higham edition a try. It's only been open for 6 weeks or so, and the place was already absolutely packed on a Saturday night. If you come here (or any of their Mass locations honestly) during a popular meal time, be prepared to wait. This place is super buzzy, and they don't accept reservations, so they're notorious for long waits. This location does allow you to join the waitlist online however. That's what we did, and we even decided to eat an early dinner around 5pm, and still spent about 35 minutes waiting with drinks at the bar. The host told us the wait can be as long as 2.5 hours (!!!) at peak times. We weren't in a rush so it was all good, and we started off with the signature "green" margaritas at the bar. This is one of my favorite cocktails they offer--their great bar menu is one of the primary things that keeps me coming back. Once we arrived at our table, we kicked things off with some chips and guac, which was fresh and flavorful (don't let the break-your-own-chips put you off). You can either order via QR code/online menu or put a card up on your table to have a server come by. Service was super fast and the team checked on us multiple times, so no complaints there! We sampled quite a few different tacos, and the highlights were definitely the pork belly, spiced chicken verde, sesame ribeye, and crispy oyster. The side esquites were another highlight - creamy and spicy and everything you want them to be! I will say that we tried the roasted duck taco for the first time, and it was a bit of a let down. Super dry and just not that exciting compared to the others. The biggest downside to bartaco is just how popular it is. But if you're not in a rush, it's a great spot for a cocktail and a plate of upscale street tacos. (The have a pretty big kids menu too!) The neighborhood could use more trendy, fun places like this, it definitely won't be my last visit! read more

New location open in derby street ! It was definitely popping with a lot of families on this holiday Monday, dates, groups, birthdays. The space is definitely clean, setup nice and staff are great overall and nice. When we arrived around 6:30pm the wait was said to be an hour, you leave your name and number per usual, and they text you when your table is ready, you have about 5 min to come back and see the host. We spent the time roaming around the plaza shopping and checking out the other businesses! About 8pm we got the text and ran it back. We were seated promptly by the hostess, our second contact staff showed us the QR code on the table to online order, the blue flag card to notify staff you need assistance, and brought us napkins, utensils, trays, and sauces (Rojas, jalapeños, habanero). We went thru and selected the tacos of course - Baja fish - chorizo - crispy pork Also got the Duck barria, and two deserts key lime pie, and tres leches! Now our taco items came out together The Baja fish was probably the best. The chorizo wasn't dry like many places, and the crispy pork was overall good, a bit extra hard to chew thru. Must say that compared to many other spots we've had the filling to tortillas was a bit lopsided, so the portion per taco was very small. Other spots load them up for the price. The barria duck was disappointing in that it seemed to be over fried charred pretty good on the outside and the duck therefore was really dry. The deserts took quite awhile to show, figured maybe after we finish the main meal items the deserts would be brought back out. One staff member we asked about said they would check, but didn't see them again. We put the card up on the table and another member said she would check. I believe a supervisor or manager came by noticed it took about an hour to get the deserts but he made it right without us asking. The staff here overall and the ordering system is really nice. Makes things easy. I believe you can chalk this up to new opening woes, and they'll pick it up and have it running smooth from back kitchen to front of house. Every staff member was extremely nice. We shared plantains, esquites, and 11 tacos: baja fish, glazed pork belly, sesame ribeye, pistachio cauliflower, chile-lime shrimp, spiced chicken verde, roasted duck, seared chorizo, tuna tatako, crispy oyster, and falafel - TASTE: 4/5 - started off strong w apps; the corn was super tasty, and the plantains sweet. Highlights of the tacos were the Baja fish, pork belly, and seared chorizo. The crispy oyster was prob the weakest link. Liked the hot sauce options on the table TEXTURE: 4/5 - all of the tacos were generally well balanced w tender meat, crunchy and/or saucy fillings, and soft tortillas PRICE: 4/5 - $3-5 per taco honestly wasn't bad, was expecting worse! Subtotal was $58 SERVING SIZE: 4/5 - could've ordered a few more tacos after finishing, but were still satisfied for dinner SERVICE: 5/5 - joined the waitlist 30min before arriving at 5:15pm on a Friday. The booths were filled, but plenty of tables were open and we were seated immediately. Not bad, not great I went to Bartaco with a friend recently for lunch. They had a wait for tables so we sat at the bar. We each got a cocktail and started with salsa. The salsa was very good, though chips are fried whole tortillas and we didn't get enough to share with the salsa. I got a pineapple pisco drink. I asked what pisco was and the bartender had no idea. She asked the manager who also wasn't sure but said "like a brandy". I had the drink and it was very tasty. I went with the ahi tuna and crispy rice for lunch and it was very tasty. The amount of tuna was very small and could have been fresher. But the flavors were there and the seasoning good. My friend got two tacos, one she enjoyed and the other she didn't eat because the chicken was chewy. Tacos are sort of "eh". Could use some sauces or salsas or sour cream or something. They seemed small and not worth it. Overall it was okay. The location is convenient, building clean, staff friendly enough, but didn't seem like a place I'd be eager to go for dinner. Buzzy new addition to the Derby Street shops offers friendly service but food and execution not yet firing on all cylinders. Plenty of wicker, wood and outdoor seating -- you can almost imagine this place nestled on a beach. The outdoor couches are inviting and my knee jerk reaction is to order a light beer in response. They have a little card game that where you can prompt the server by putting up a card when you want to get their attention. Our server was more than accommodating and brought our food and drinks in quick succession, whether or not we used the card. Unfortunately, this is where things got a bit less positive. The place is a styled as high-end street food and the flavor combinations certainly look enticing. Indeed, the tortilla soup was tasty, if not small. Unfortunately on the taco side, what could have been a great combination of ribeye and kimchi came off bland. The ribeye was not well seasoned and the kimchi lacked punch. The tuna and fish tacos hit the same. We took the opportunity to sample some of the sauces on the table to bring the tacos to taste -- however even the sauces tend to be on the sweeter side and overwhelmed the poor habaneros (which is not something I am used to saying). Bartaco is owned by the same private equity firm that owns the barcelona wine bars, del frisco group etc. I am sure they run their chains efficiently but the chain seems to lack the imagination that the decor and menu promise. For these types of chains, consistency can be a strength -- if this location is representative of the others, I. would encourage L Catterton to raise the bar at all of their locations. read more

Underwhelming is the best word to describe my experience here. Came on a Friday night at 5 and got seated right away. Took 30 minutes for us to get a simple mixed drink and a margarita. The marg was mostly mix with very little alcohol in a small glass to boot. The waitress was a space case and took another 40-45 minutes to take our order! It wasn't even all that busy either. Tacos were tiny and as I said, underwhelming. The cucumber salad was good although the cukes were a bit mushy. Chips and guac....chips were just big circular wicked salty sheets? Like what? So strange. The crying and whining kids next to us sure didn't add to the experience, although not the restaurants fault there, obviously. Also how can you run out of rice on a Friday night early in the night??? Way better places around for tacos and drinks. This is a hard pass, won't ever go back. read more

I have been hearing nothing but great things about Bartaco and discovered that now there is a location Hingham now. Thought why the heck not give it a try? We visited tonight at around 6:30pm and had to wait a little over an hour for a table. They were pretty packed around the time we went. We decided to walk around to all the shops to kill some time & at 8pm we finally received a text that there's a table ready. I really liked their ordering system! They have the standard QR code at each table & you can order through the site. If you need anything, there's a card you can put up & it flags one of the staff members to assist you. What we ordered: We tried a couple different tacos, including the chorizo, pork belly, Baja fish, & their birria duck tacos. The meats were not bad & not dry but the tacos could've benefited from some extra sauce, like a creamy aioli of some sort? Just felt like they were missing something. As for the duck birria tacos, I wasn't impressed. At first, I thought there wasn't any cheese at all but found out there in fact was, just very little amount. The tacos were also VERY DRY & duck was also very dry. Tacos were overcooked to the point of tasting like rubber unfortunately. Dessert: We decided to try two of the dessert items, key lime pie & tres leches. We ordered both of them at the same time we ordered the tacos. We were not sure if they'd bring the dessert at the same time the tacos were served & they didn't serve it at the same time so we then thought okay so they're coming after we finish the tacos? Cool. Negative. The desserts were forgotten and we waited almost 30 minutes. We then asked two workers to see if our desserts were coming and the first worker did not come back actually lol. The second worker we asked found out that we had been waiting almost a hour, so I guess the desserts were supposed to have came the same time the tacos came. The desserts were okay. Not too sweet so that was great. The key lime pie one was much better than the tres leches though. Overall, my experience at bartaco was a 5/10. I don't know how to feel about it to be honest. It was a lot of waiting & the food was mediocre at best. I think this location just recently opened so it's all good. Maybe will give bartaco a try again, but their other locations. read more

Bar Taco is a family favorite. The food is always tasty and consistent. The service is unmatched as well, especially tonight. There was a small mix up with the drink order and our server Vanessa took care of us like we were family. Seriously, just a wonderful person. Also, a gentleman by the name of Daila came over to make sure we were all set with our corrected drink order as well. Service is just unmatched! Heard and saw some "not so good" reviews but most of the complaints were about the service. We gave them, Bar Taco in Hingham a chance anyway and did not disappoint. Date night and after the movies, stopped in and was greeted by one of the waitresses Emma. Emma was friendly, attentive, professional, delightful, courteous and polite. The restaurant clean, spacious, nicely decorated, well lit and comfortable with outdoor patio seating. The front of the restaurant is opened to the outdoor patio with heaters. We chose to sit inside. Noise level was filled with music but you can still have a conversation. Great menu. Placed our order with Emma and our order arrived in timely manner. Ordered several tacos, duck, ribeye, chorizo, fried oysters and pork belly. Shared an tres leches for dessert. All were nicely presented, fresh, perfectly prepared, tasty and absolutely delicious. Well they say bad things come in 3's...so this will be number 3.... Food is subpar.....Tuna rice bowl, the slaw was drenched in vinegar & the crispy rice was wilted! The Black beans are a disgrace to every Latin person alive!! WHERE IS THE FLAVOR! The kids quesadillas were ok if you enjoy stubborn cheese that stick to the paper. The pork belly was tough, & chewy..... The service was great!! We had Amelia , she was kind & courteous & tended to our every need. I am very surprised by the negative reviews. I've been to a couple of Bar Taco locations but since I live on the South Shore I've eaten at this location about 10 times and they have all been great experiences. We like it so much that we decide to order it for our son's graduation party. We ordered 3 Beach 6 packs as well as a family pack of cauliflower tacos and 15 quesadillas. First - put the beach wraps on the dine in menu! We love them and they were a huge hit at the party! The food was perfectly packed and ready on time. People loved the guacamole and salsas too. Much appreciation to the staff - especially Connor who helped get it organized. Ignore the negative reviews and try for yourself - we are big fans. read more

The food and atmosphere are so good but the waiting... ugh. We (5 of us) were seated just before 7 last night (Monday). We ordered drinks and chips and guacamole right away, and the drinks came quickly. (Their mocktail Nojito is amazing.) 25 minutes went by and we had to flag someone down to ask about our chips and guac. We were finally served that, then we waited ANOTHER 30 minutes until SOME of our food trickled out. My husband and son were completely finished with their meals by the time my daughter and her friend received even one bite of their entrees (kids' quesadilla meals). Parts of my meal were served around 15 minutes apart. (The pork belly taco is so good.) Our server came over multiple times and was very apologetic, saying she'd checked in with the chef to try and hurry things up. She ended up telling us she was taking three items off our bill, which was appreciated, but when I go out to dinner, I expect to eat at the same time as the people I'm with. 10/10 recommend. Went in tonight with our five and two year old (it's their favorite restaurant) and we were met with nothing but vibes and great service. Brandon, the Gm, introduced himself quickly and made such an impression within the first few minutes that my 5 year old not only remembered his name, but randomly commented "mommy he's so nice!" He checked in often, as did Mike the AGM. we come often and so so appreciate the kid friendliness of the restaurant while also still feeling like we're having a fun adult night out.
