Me: "I'm here to pick up my glasses. I got a call on Thursday that they are ready." Office mgr (forcefully): "Do you have an appointment? Saturdays are normally appointment only." Me (taken aback): "No." There was nothing mentioned about requiring an appointment on the voice message left by an Unknown caller. The glasses could be picked up on Saturday between 11am-1pm. After almost 4 weeks, and no pro-active status during that time, I went asap on Saturday. It was my 3rd visit. The office manager gave explanations for problems during each visit, especially that delays and limited office openings and short hours were COVID-related. Maybe. So this rating gets 2 stars instead of 1, to make up for his COVID hardships. Back in high school I remember the principal announcing over the loudspeaker system that *explanations* for morning tardiness were "not excusing causes." LOL. Same here. During the second visit, I asked the office manager if he was Dr Mozlin. "No, you'll never see him. I run everything." I chose the Mozlin optometry office based on many 5-star Yelp reviews. I've been going here since I was a teenager, and I've been through dry eyes, LASIK 3x, a cataract replacement lens and countless Rxs in between. To say the least, I'm a challenging case. Now I need readers. Ay! I made the erroneous decision to see another optom in Encinitas because it was a one-stop shop. I could see the ophthalmologist and the optometrist in the same visit. It was more of an eye mill,really, just horrible. Nice docs, but unqualified staff doing the exams. I was in the midst of a trial lens from the horrible place and decided that I should actually have a real doctor give me the eye exam, instead of an optician. Huge difference! After a few minutes and a couple jokes, Dr. Mozlin discovered that I didn't have an astigmatism, and my Rx wasn't even close to what I was given as trials. After over one year of visits and trials and surgeries, I can see with my multi-focal lenses. Thank you! I will never go anywhere else, and I'm sorry I did. Barry R Mozlin, OD owns the Shiley Optic Clinic. I have never dealt with a ruder service provider when trying to discuss an issue with my glasses. Yes they were made last August, but is it really my responsibility to know they made them with the wrong axis number? Even Dr. Mozlin agreed one could compensate when one eye is bad and the other is not, but he would not agree that I couldn't notice the problem within the 3-6 month window when they could have been repaired. Blaming everyone else, the Optometrists at the Shiley Eye Institute, and not even saying they could've made a mistake reading a number is no way to work with a client. Walk ins...NOT WELCOME! I've stopped by this shop on several occasions and they were closed... "Due to Covid". Finally! ...I noticed they were open so I went to the door and asked for them to tighten the sidehinge at the side of my very expensive prescription sunglasses. I was told I need an appointment to have any work done on my sunglasses WHICH I BOUGHT There! If you can't find time to make this simple repair for a client who has been a loyal customer and has spent a lot of money at your shop, never mind.....I'll shop go to Costco where prices and service better. read more

You want over the top customer service, you will get that at this office. I received an eye exam at another office in Encinitas, but they only had about 2 pairs of glasses which fit my criteria and the service was pretty bad. My co-worker referred Dr. Mozlin and the experience was incredible. I didn't have an appointment and Jill was nice enough to let me come back at a later time that day to look at glasses, which was fine with me because I had some errands to run. When she looked at my prescription, she was skeptical about what the other office had wrote. I ended up choosing a pair a glasses and Jill recommended I come back the next day to make sure the prescriptions were accurate. I ended up getting another eye exam from Dr. Tillman who said the prescription was wrong and that it was right to have a second look. She had me wear temporary glasses with the original prescription the other office wrote and I immediately felt a pull in my left eye because it was hard to focus. She lowered my prescription and had me try that and make sure I was comfortable with them. Thank god for Jill and her intuition. If I had just bought glasses with the original prescription, I would of never ended up wearing them because my left side was over prescribed. The best part of the whole visit was that they didn't charge me for the additional services. It was a free eye exam and all I end up paying for is the frames that I chose. Which by the way, they have an amazing selection to choose from and they can always check and see if they have a color you like. Jill ended up ordering my frames in black. Great customer service, the doctors know their stuff, Jill is the definition of customer service and speaks with the customers best interest in mind. I was terribly unsatisfied with my experience at Barry Mozlin's. I bought a voucher from KGBDeals that said 'Exam and $150 Towards Glasses' with a Fine Print item that says 'Valid for complete pair of glasses/sunglasses only; must include frames and lenses'. My girlfriend is currently uninsured and I figured that a coupon deal would be an inexpensive way of getting an eye exam done. The staff were really friendly. They ended up giving my girlfriend a lens fitting test although I hadn't signed up for it. I objected to the lens fitting charge and rejected the services and they gladly complied. Things went downhill from then though. Most of their frames and lenses were overpriced and I couldn't afford to buy them. They didn't allow me to pick up my girlfriend's eye exam prescription. They asked me to pay 85$ above the 69$ I had already paid for the deal. 154$ for an eye exam (for glasses only) prescription ! Summary: I hope you didn't get screwed over by the deal as well. I thought their services are reasonable, but I felt like they're a shady outfit desperately reaching for your cash. read more

I purchased a Living Social deal for an eye exam and $175 towards prescription lenses and am so happy I did! I have noticed some eye fatigue at the end of the day and also some changes in vision when driving at night so I thought it was time for me to get myself checked out. I don't have any vision benefits on my current insurance plan so I figured this would be a good way for me to get check out. I had no issues making my appointment and was able to get in right away. The office has moved from it's original location but is not hard to find because of the signage. The office itself was very clean and comfortable and I was greeted immediately. You can find the new patient paperwork on their website so I completed it before I came in. The lady at the front desk (Jill?) was really warm and welcoming and put me right at ease. We went through a few primary tests for checking eye pressure, peripheral vision and examining the anatomy of my eye. One that was completed, I was able to see Dr. Mozlin. He was very thorough and also had a dry sense of humor which I fully appreciated it. He was a complete professional and confirmed my suspicion of one eye being weaker than the other when it came to seeing distance. After the exam, I worked with Tim to find a pair of frames. I explained that since I would only be wearing them in my house or car, I would be fine with the least expensive ones and he found me a pair that were still stylish. He didn't try to up-sell me on any product and I never felt pressured. I had a really great experience at Dr. Mozlin's office and will continue to be a patient here. Thanks for everything! read more

I had a Amazon Local deal for the eye exam and $175 towards a pair of glasses and it was awesome. I do not have eye insurance so it was a real life saver. I actually hadn't had my eyes checked in about 5 years and they were very nice about it. The entire process took about an hour (getting my eyes checked and then picking out frames and getting everything set). I did end up paying $150 there, but to be fair I got pretty expensive frames (they are Ray-Bans) and my lenses were most of that extra money. if you have glasses you know how expensive it can get without insurance. At least I now know my new prescription and can go else where for any additional items (contacts, sunglasses, extra frames, etc.) I was told it would take 5-7 days for my glasses to be ready, but they actually arrived three days later which was great! Came here initially for a new eye exam (Thank you KAISER for determining that my vision was not degraded enough for optical coverage!!). I used a groupon that gave me a great discount on frames, lenses and the exam. The staff was super helpful and friendly, they were very accommodating and the office was neat and clean. My exam was thorough and the Dr. made sure to explore several options to help enhance my vision and help with the "tired eyes" and computer glare issues I have. Love this office. Tim and Jill in the front always make the office visit fun and they both know how to help you choose your frames, if you need any. Our family goes here, including two young boys. They've been assisting my 12 year old son to choose the coolest frames for the past five years. My eyes suck! Vision has been going down hill ever since I hit the big 40... But I found a place I really like. This place is great! Doc Mozlin gave a very thorough exam and I just didn't expect the doctor to be so damn funny. Great experience all around! I needed a new glasses prescription & frames and saw some good reviews so decided to check out! I came in hoping for a walk in but due to Dr. Mozlin being great at his job I needed to book for a few days later. Jill at the front desk was so helpful and kind! I'm new to Cardiff and truly enjoyed talking with her, and learning more about this amazing city I was happy to wait for my appointment and when I came back in Jill remembered me and was exited to see me, that always makes someone feel so valued. I also, am 4 months pregnant and had my 5 yr old with me so I was a little bit of a hot mess the day of the appointment but everyone in the office was kind, patient and helpful! I enjoyed my experience with Dr. Mozlin himself, he was a lot of fun and kept me and my son smiling the whole time! Tim helped me in picking my frame along with Jill and helping me decide which one was best! Absolute scam! This optometrist has a groupon deal that states you get an eye exam & $175 towards a pair of glasses for $59. Sounds like a great deal, right? I show up and they tell me that with Groupon I MUST buy a pair of prescription glasses TODAY (where lenses are seperate & glasses are seperate) or else I will pay $119 for the eye exam. Ummm so what's the deal in this? NONE at all. I read the fine print to groupon again and it doesn't say anything to that effect. The guys said if they could add that phrase they would but Groupon limits them to what they can write. My advice is to move on & find another OD. SMH read more

I simply couldn't decide which glasses I wanted and tried on a million different pairs. After wearing contacts and glasses for more than 10 years, I finally decided to be brave and investigate Lasik. Since the ripe age of 13, I've had to wear glasses. I have considered Lasik, but all that guarantees is the need for reading glasses in my golden years. I found out about Dr. Mozlin's optometry boutique from Groupon and I'm so thankful that I did. I was in desperate need of seeing glasses, as one pair was lost and the other broken, besides I hadn't had my eyes checked for years. Dr. Mozlin is not only a great optometrist, but a comedian as well. He kept me entertained the whole time I was getting my eyes checked and answered every question I had about my eyes and the options I had available to me. Then, there are the staff at this place, I can't say enough about how professional and helpful they are. Tim and Jill were the two who worked with me in finding not only a great pair of seeing glasses, but I finally treated myself to a pair of customized sunglasses with my prescription lenses in them. What I liked most about Tim and Jill was that they were able to educate me on what makes for a great fitting pair of glasses. I didn't know for instance, that some glasses are meant for a certain type of nose bridge and that the size and shape of a lens depends on the shape of your face and the size of your eyes. So, basically not all glasses are going to look good on you and sometimes the glasses that look great on one person, look terrible on you. I realized after their help, that I had probably been wearing the wrong type of glasses for my face and nose type---for years, and worse yet, no one in that industry had ever bothered to tell me. read more

I have never written a review before, but in this economy it is important to get quality and reasonable prices. Don't bother looking further! Dr Mozlin has over 25 years expierence and is probably the best known optometrist in North County. He has been my optometrist for 14 years and he is always up to date, takes the time to do whatever it takes to make sure my vision is perfect! He also does tremendous laser referrals. I trust DR.MOZLIN and did I mention he has fab frames and sunglasses? His staff works just as hard to make sure I get appt. times that work for me and are incredible in finding best looking frames for my face. He also is very funny! I always leave with a smile on my face. That matters to me. I give Dr Mozlin 5+++ stars. As for that one crummy review, that must have been written by a competitor! read more

Really Expensive. Rude assistant. Dr. Mozlin seemed nice enough, but I agree that he appears impatient. His assistant told me that I should have been able to get use to progressive lenses, after all, "the fellow who just left couldn't even speak english, and he got used to them". $750 is a lot for a pair of glasses. The frames were only $125. I didn't get reimbursed for the $350 charge for the progressive lenses that I couldn't use. I won't be going back. read more
