Every time I call them or stop by their location I have to wait and wait and the phone is almost never answered. Just They never have enough help. They don't acknowledge you when you come in someone's either at lunch at 2 PM or they're in the restroom or whatever. I'm tired of it and I'm taking my business elsewhere. I do not recommend. And, when I went in the office today I was told they didn't know how long it would be to wait and I couldn't make an appointment One good thing is when I requested my prescription, it was emailed quickly (this was 2 weeks ago). read more

this was my first ever time coming here and i literally live a 1 minute walk away from this place so i was like why not. haven't gotten my prescription renewed in about 1.5-2 years so yeah. but everyone here was absolutely wonderful. took care of me the moment i stepped through that door. the gentleman at the reception table was very nice, took care of me as soon as i came in for my scheduled eye exam. he immediately got me the pictures/eye blow air thing/ peripheral thing. wasted no time at all. then doctor tayman proceeded to help me finish up with finalizing my new prescription. he was a very nice gentleman, and was very professional with his work. he definitely knew his stuff as he's been doing this for over 50 years. learned some new things as well, such as you can tell how ones blood pressure is or if someone is diabetic just from their eyes. takes serious knowledge in the field to know stuff like that. then, another one of the gentleman in the front took care of me in choosing new frames. i ended up not choosing a new one, and just opted to replace the lens on my current frames. unfortunately i have a gargantuan cranium, so most pairs of frames do not fit me but yeah overall i definitely recommend coming here for your eye exams or to consult with anything regarding optometry. the folks here are very nice and professional and will for sure take care of you. read more

I was really disappointed by this place. Due to limited choices from my insurance provider, I sort of blindly pointed to one of the 3 choices in my area and went here. they are very disorganized and make you wait forever after checking in. customer service is not their strong suit. when I came back for one of my follow ups they had lost my file and searched the cluttered desk for 10 minutes. i went 3 weeks waiting for the call that my contacts arrived (extremely over priced btw, only got them b/c of the allowance my insurance provides through a network provider) and finally called to inquire. they has just been SITTING over there. later i needed to go back because I was concerned my prescription was not strong enough and it took 2 weeks of repeated calls (every time i was promised a returned phone call and didnt get it) to finally get in. after getting the exam again and sure enough needing something stronger, i nicely asked if i might be able to get a few samples to tide me over till the ones i was going to get online arrived (insurance allowance was maxed out so why buy their overpriced ones). the optometrist said something to the effect of "those samples are for customers who plan on buying through us" in a snobby tone. I couldnt believe it!! I'm sorry, am I not a "customer" who spent $90 out-of-pocket since you failed to mention your additional "lens fitting fee" that wasnt included in yearly exams - even though i was told the whole exam was covered? not to mention my "fitting" included me telling him what it was already, even down to the brand i needed. and the reason i needed samples was b/c they took 2 weeks to get their act together in getting me an appointment and i was nearly out. my experience went from bad to worse to just plain insulting over a 6 month period. DON'T go here. typical example of an over-priced, snobby la jolla place that has no integrity and isn't even good at what they do. read more

I only went because my ophthalmologist said it was too early for cataract surgery. When I told him it was uncomfortable driving at night, he told me to get glasses. What a disaster. None of the glasses (three pair) were correct. All of them made me dizzy when I looked through them. I had one for reading only, a pair for driving at day and night, and a pair to be progressive bifocals. Bifocals were not progressives as I had requested. I had to tilt my head far back to use the bifocal portion - which was awful. My over the counter reading glasses are far better for reading and working at my computer. Today I received a text message to confirm for an appointment THAT I DID NOT MAKE. I stopped to pick up the glasses that I had paid for and told them that it was inappropriate for them to make an appointment for me. They told me that I had made the appointment last time I was in. NOT TRUE. I informed at that time that I would telephone because I had to look at my electronic calendar on my workstation. I had not called because I was mulling over what I was going to do, and my decision was to pick up the merchandise I had paid for and go to another optometrist. I was astonished that they would pushing a appointment on me and then LYING to me about me having made the appointment. My recommendation - AVOID. read more

I've been a patient of Dr. Gentile for a few years now. I've had an amazing experience every single time. For starters, I'm a huge hypochondriac and get extremely nervous and anxious when it comes to my eyes. The staff at La Jolla Eye Care does an amazing job keeping me calm when I come in for appointments. Debbie always orders my contacts for me, Lisa calms me down when she checks my eye pressure, and Dr. Gentile performs a thorough exam + answers all my questions. I've had my run with conjunctivitis & eye dryness which leads to me coming into the office often. They're always able to get me in fast when I have an issue and even seen my husband the same day as well. I can't thank the staff enough for being accommodating, kind, and patient each time! Im writing this review for me and my mother, who had a terrible time at this place. I had just found out I needed some glasses, and since my insurance isn't taken everywhere, I decided to give this place a chance. My mother came along too because she needed new lenses for her glasses. The store is half the size of what it usually is because they are doing repairs. At first, the staff were really nice and helpful. I couldn't find a pair I wanted, since most of their men's glasses were black. So then it was my mom's turn and this is where is goes bad. My mom just needed new lenses for this glasses she had, and the saleslady (whose name I didn't catch) seemed to be very helpful and told her she could have very thin lenses even though her prescription was huge. She told my mom that if she didn't like it, she could have a refund. So my mom agree and she is told that they would be ready in a week or so. Three and half weeks later, we get a call saying that they are ready. We go in to find that they actually are not, and that the lenses are not thin like she said, but almost an inch thick! We asked why are they so thick when you promised they would be thin??? My mom was pissed so she asked for a refund to our insurance. Then the saleslady mood instantly changed from nice, to really rude. She actually laughed at my mom and said "I never said you could get a refund! It is impossible!" She basically told my mom to suck it up and deal with the lenses. I would avoid this place at all costs read more

OK - so the one reviewer kinda cracked at/kicked around the Optician that helped pick my bitchin' frames. Annette was freaking awesome!! I made the grievous error going to the goofball down the street - leaving me feeling like I should just make my own frames out of bailing wire & coke bottles. The 'MacGyver' frame will be popular...but if you want to take the easy way out and get something that fits your personality - go see Annette. She was honest, took the time to go over many MANY different frames, and go through the dreaded Tome of Insurance Pricing for Eyewear (ugh!). It's going to take time to select the right color, fit, & style..... because you don't want to look like one of those guys that they used to stuff into the locker in high school (or worse - the dreaded swirly where you watch your poor selection in eyewear swim before your very eyes). I really like my frames - they are truly bad a**. It's nice to be complemented on your eyeglasses - and that only happens when you visit a skilled Optician. I love this place and have no complaints. The office staff have always been knowledgable and kind. As for Dr. Gentile, I adore him. I've seen him before for yearly examinations but this time I had a problem with my eye. I have severe anxiety and was very worried. Same with another time, a year or so ago. He always takes his time explaining what he's going to do and quickly tells me whether it's a concern or not. Then he shows me different photos on the eye chart and explains more. His presence is warm and comforting to me; his manner very kind, gentle and knowledgable. I have never seen the other Dr., but Dr. Gentile is the Dr. for me! read more

This office is very unprofessional. I had an insurance change after moving away from San Diego for a while and the office said they could look up my insurance information and would call me with any issues. I didn't get a call or any communication that there's a problem but when I arrived for my appointment, the receptionist acted rudely and as if I had no insurance and would be unable to pay for services. I provided my insurance only to be told that they don't accept my provider. While it is my responsibility to verify my insurance, I found it unprofessional that they claimed they could take care of it and failed to give me a call when they encountered an issue. The receptionist was unprofessional, rude and did not apologize for the error. I'm actually switching to VSP again shortly but will be taking my business elsewhere. read more

I would say pretty standard, except for the fact that I LOVE the office assistant. She is helpful, good-humored, and knowledgeable. I had a great experience here. Easy to find. The front desk women greeted me, and were very friendly. They had pulled my insurance information already and were upfront about what was covered. The doctor was great, patient, funny, and took the time to talk to me about my eyes and prescription. He didn't seem rushed at all. When picking out my glasses, the women at the front desk were fun and bubbly, they seemed to enjoy helping me find the right pair. One of the best things: they offered to help get my old eye doctor's medical records transferred to them. I had a bad experience with my previous eye doctor, and I didn't want to talk to them. It was a nice service to make it so easy. I will definitely go back!! There is ample parking, but there is a small fee to park if you are longer than 1 hour. read more

I saw the ophthalmologist here, who was recommended by my normal optometrist located elsewhere. The ophthalmologist, Dr. Ng, was nice and thoroughly answered all my questions. The real stars here, however, are the two ladies at the front desk. Not only were they kind, but I unexpectedly started feeling sick while in the lobby and both sprang to the rescue and went above and beyond to help me feel better. It's much appreciated - I thank you very much!! Easy to get to, from what I understand the place was recently renovated and looked nice - only downside was you gotta pay for parking. I already had glasses but just wanted to get some contact lenses, they they did the eye test and sent my home with some disposable ones to try for the next week. I came back did a quick check up with the contacts in and then ordered a six month supply. With my insurance the total was about $280. Seemed to be reasonable however I have never done this before so I have nothing to compare read more

I am going to have to disagree with Heather and say this place was awesome! Maybe she just happen to be there during a busy time for them and is always tough to give good service when you have a billion things happening. I went in there seeking contacts for the first time. The 2 ladies up front were really friendly and answered all my questions fairly well, so I decided to schedule an apt. to see Dr. Tayman. At the appointment Dr. Tayman was very nice and easy to work with. After the exam I had to try on my contacts, which is what I have been fearing the most. So after failing for about 20 min, one of the ladies just put the contacts in for me. I still had trouble getting them in at home so I actually went in there and asked them if they would put them in for me cause we needed to make sure I was wearing the right prescription, and to get used to them and see if I was even comfortable with wearing them in the first place. I even went in there before work a few times and bugged them to put them in for me :) Eventually I learned to do it on my own but all their tips and help definitely made it easier once I got the hang of it. All in all I loved this place, they were very helpfulful with everything and I am glad I chose them. Once I move back to Diego I will continue to go to Dr. Tayman!! read more

I was very with their service, I needed a new pair of reading glasses and for the first time I went to this office . Dr.Gentile was OK, but his assistant was very unprofessional, she try to help me to choose a good lense, she keep asking me if I need glasses for driving and watching TV!! I said no this is for reading only. After almost 2 weeks when I was there to pick up my glasses, I notice the lenses are blue, when I complained, she said because this protect your eyes when you watching TV!! and you made a mistake to order them, for 45 minutes she was denying her mistake .I was so angry and I did not want to pay for that, but they refused. They charged me higher than other and the quality of service lower than other offices. I never go there for sure. read more

The lack of organization and customer service is evident the moment you deal with his front desk staff. It is unfortunate because Dr Gentile is professional and competent. Dr please take care of your business and let the people that you currently employ there, go!!!, unless you are willing to loose your practice. I was a second time customer and I try to give your office a second chance and the royally blow it. Not only I am willing to return I am discouraging people to go there. In summary, the ladies that are attending the store are not capable to give basic information, suggestions or advices on the lenses and products.
