Ok, here's the deal. I want to start this review by saying I've literally been to the Barrio Queen location in Glendale twice in eight days. Yes you read that right. Before that I'd never been to one, but heard so many great things. I've been talking it up to anyone who will listen and today my sis, Dad and I met up at this location in Avondale to try it out. I LOVED the big beautiful wood doors upon entering. There is some great artwork here just like the other location to enjoy outside and inside the location. There is patio seating as well as a large bar if you are alone or just prefer those areas. We were greeted right away and sat in a booth towards the back where it's a little quieter for my dad who has a hard time hearing. Once sat we were given our menus to peruse and waited for our waitress to bring some chips/salsa and take our drink order. We had to wait quite a while. Another couple sat behind us and got all these things before us. Once our waitress arrived however it was hard to be annoyed as she was very apologetic. We soon found out that they were very short handed. Some of the staff didn't show up and they were getting busy quick. The poor girl was working her tail off and for that we definitely tried to be as patient as possible. We of course ordered the guacamole. It took a long time for her to come back and we were slowly getting full on chips. Once it arrived Ian's made it was ok, but had too much lime and unfortunately not enough salt. While good it wasn't something that would wow anyone as I'd hoped. We were able to order and waited again. By the time our meals came out unfortunately they were warm, luke warm at best. They'd definitely been sitting. Everything was still good, but it again wouldn't been so much better hot. I ordered the tamale trio with rice and beans. The Puerco verde is by far my favorite, but the chicken one with three pepper red sauce was awesome . I'd never had the chicken before today. The veggie one with queso (can't remember specific name) was awful. Basically all masa no flavor. It was hard to cut into with my fork. I was done after one bite of it. My sis liked her Chile Verde plate but again she said how much better it would've been hot. My dad said his Chile rojo had great flavor. But again barely warm. This locations reviews info are pretty accurate. I'll stick to the Glendale location . Hopefully when their Surprise location opens it's good because I'm really looking forward to it. Highly dissatisfied with the service we received today. Went in with high expectations, as I had been to another location, but the lack of professionalism was disappointing. First of all, the restaurant was loud. Not because it was busy, but because the DJ was blaring music in our ears the entire time. It was difficult to even hear across the small table we sat at. Ordering was a hassle. Even lowering the volume just slightly would have enhanced the experience slightly. Our silverware had food on it when we first unwrapped them-- all three sets at our table were dirty. Along with this, the food was mediocre at best. Certainly not up to par with my experience at another location. Even the birria tacos did not come with the sauce that was listed on the menu, and no one at our table received food that seemed fresh. My tacos were cold, and others were just room temperature. Upfront, we ordered guacamole, which is supposed to be made table side. Apparently, the rush of three tables meant we just got a bowl of pre made guac at our table after our other food had already been brought out and we had finished eating. Our server was practically non existent. If there was a rush, I would be more understanding, but the restaurant seemed almost completely empty. OVERPRICED. POOR SERVICE. BAD FOOD. The only thing they have to show is the ambience and even that isn't all that great. It's posh and basic. Their "Table-side" guac was bad from the start. It had no seasoning whatsoever! No salt. No pepper. No jalapeños. No lime. No cilantro. Bland. Their food in general had no flavor! Even the beans tasted canned (which they probably are) To top it off there was no salt/pepper on the table to help season anything. The service was just as bad. We ordered alcohol with water and we didn't get the water or any other beverage aside from what we ordered because we actually did not get checked on the entire time we were there. So we couldn't ask for anything. Our server was behind the bar bullshitting. It was also not a very busy night either. Overpriced as F***! We paid $15 for a small margarita that had very little tequila and was simply bland. Almost $100 spent on a meal for 2 that should have been like $50. Today was our second time coming in to eat here and oh my gosh i dont know why we waited so long to come back!! Service is amazing the manager (Julio) went out of his way to check on us! This review is for my first time here and for Happy Hour. My guy and I were out and about and decided to stop by for a drink and take a look inside. It was busy at the Hostess desk so we asked about the area since the wait was a bit long. No waiting and we found two open seats. Yessssss! The menu is very colorful and has some tasty choices. Unfortunately , my guy and I had just eaten . Sad for us because I could've found quite a few meatless items to try. Luckily, it was Happy Hour. Both of us ordered the House Margarita and I was not disappointed. It was flavorful and I actually tasted the tequila . Oh boy! It was hot still and my thirst was quenched by that drink.. Even my other half remarked how good it was. The bartender brought us chips and salsa also. They chips were hot, fresh and a bit salty and that salsa! Major YUM factor! You bet, I finished that salsa. Might I add the decor is very colorful and every one inside was enjoying this restaurart. The employees are very friendly and I watched food platters going by and being set down all around me and felt sad because I wanted to try dinner here. Will we be back? You better believe it. First time coming and the ambiance was cute, plate presentations were awesome but mildly disappointed in the taste and flavors of everything we ordered considering this place claims authentic Mexican recipes. Started with the ceviche, which was good, but maybe I was hyping it up in my head. I ordered 3 tacos ( pescado, carne asada, and the pollo deshebrado). All of them were bland. Finished with the Tres Leches which was also a disappointment as it was more of a strawberry shortcake. The highlight was the customer service - EXCELLENT- awesome staff, from the hostesses at the front to the waiters. Today was the first day Barrio Queen Avondale was open and was it amazing. Everything from the ambiance to the service and especially the food was amazing. We had the Roasted Elote (Roasted corn), Mocajete, and the Trio Enchiladas and for dessert Churros. They have a great selection of Tequilas and the Skinny Chola was also a great mixed drink. We decided to check it out for a late lunch...it was already packed and had about a 20-25 minute wait...but, it was worth it. We started with the guacamole, which is made tableside. I'll just say it now, pomegranate in the guac is a game-changer...who knew?? It was delightfully tasty, along with the freshly made chips, delicious! Hubby got cheesy enchiladas, the red sauce is strong and flavorful. I went with the 3 tacos (2 carne asada and 1 carnitas). The tacos are like street tacos and, like the chips, freshly made...so good! I ended up putting some of the guac on them, which made them really good!! Yeah, we ended up having dessert, too. Hubby had a Mexican chocolate cake with vanilla ice cream and Mexican chocolate sauce...he inhaled it. I got the donitas, fried dough balls dipped in sugar, that came with a Mexican chocolate sauce and a vanilla sauce for dipping. We had a lovely time and would be happy to go back. Our waitress, Taylor, was very friendly. Only setback was, the taco sauce that came with them was very bitter, so I ended up not using it. But, since I added the guac, it wasn't missed. read more

We ordered the Trio Mole Enchiladas which were ... different. I loved the red mole the best the others were pretty bland in my opinion. Yes, I was raised eating Mole so for those of you that are asking "does she even know authentic mole". . I thought for the price these enchiladas were small and barely had any meat. For context : For two trio platters, a horchata, and virgin marg it was over $60. Overall, the service was great food came out fast (made me question how it's prepared). First of all the restaurant was almost empty, we arrived just before 5:00 so figured we beat the rush. It did take longer than we expected for our wait staff but typically we just don't pay attention to that now a days. 1 house margarita and 2 Diet cokes ordered. 1 Coke brought back. The Margarita came and it was in a short highball glass. Mostly ice and $12.00 this was for the house. So knowing drinks are more it's expected but this Margarita was disappointing. We were brought hot tortilla chips, they needed lots of salt added. Also no generosity with salsa. It was served in a single size ( maybe holds a couple tablespoons). We love Guacamole so always order, this was a chunky flavorless Guacamole, where were the ingredients? Oh they did throw in a bunch of pomegranate seeds. Don't recommend spending your money on this at all. Orders placed, Taco Trio, Asada, Chorizo, Fish. These are street tacos, they were ok but my friend says " don't order Chorizo as way to salty. Next up the other guest ordered short rib torta, it was good. Finally I ordered the Pork Chile Rojo. If you read my reviews you know this is my all time favorite meal, we'll it was not. Pork was cubed so tiny and not tender at all. This was not cooked low and slow, this was thrown together and unfortunately sauce was flavorless. So not sure if it was this location, bad cook that day? As we did visit another location several months ago and everyone was happy. We came here for my sisters 30th birthday. We really enjoyed the atmosphere. The food and drinks were delicious, although I wish their margaritas were bigger for how much they are. The chips and salsa they give you are AMAZING. Probably some of the best I've ever gotten. I probably filled up too much on them. The desserts we got were disappointing. The tres leches was different, and the cake was dry. The bread pudding had a good flavor but I was expecting it to be warm, but it was cold. Quality of the food is great, I was really hesitant at first because of the initial reviews here however, everything from the service, food, drinks and ambiance was great. I had the Azteca burrito which was short rib birria which was cooked to perfection. I think this was the favorite out of all the things we ordered, it also includes rice, red sauce and barrio sauce. The food was disappointing. It lacked flavor. The elote cóctel is watery and needs more condiments. The French toast was soggy. The bacon had a spice which is just weird. The fajitas are 27 and they give you 4 strips of chicken. The torta de asada was okay. The service was also okay definitely have been treated better elsewhere. To add to the sub-par food there were gnats flying around and going into the food. Based off of the other reviews they have had this gnat problem for a few weeks now. Would not recommend this place. We met friends at Barrio Queen for lunch yesterday, at their McDowell Rd and 104th Ave location. We were greeted by a friendly staff member and seated immediately, and our friends arrived a few minutes later and were directed to our table. Chips and salsa arrived quickly. I like their chips, they're thick and the salsa is delicious. Our server was excellent. Our friend had some questions about the menu and the server was very helpful. Our drinks arrived promptly, Our food arrived in a reasonable time, and our orders were filled correctly. The food was delicious. I had the Azteca Burrito; the beef short-rib meat was seasoned nicely, the portion was perfect, and the side of rice and beans complimented the meal. I don't understand why there are so many low rated reviews for this place. Perhaps they struggled when this location first opened, I don't know, but there was nothing I could criticize yesterday. The restaurant is clean, nicely decorated, the menu has some great options you don't typically see in Mexican food restaurants in the Valley, the service was excellent and the prices were reasonable. I really wanted to love this place. I am looking for a good place to take out of town guests. This is not it. I ordered it through Door Dash to try it. I ordered a side of Charro Beans. I am not sure what I got but it did not resemble the picture at all. Hardly any beans, no chorizo and no cilantro. It had a strong smell of ashtray and the taste was the same. I still feel sick from that mistake of a bite. The dasher waited for a very long time to get the order. Today was our third visit to Barrio Queen, and again extremely happy. Normally I try what I know, but not here. I tried the table side made guacamole was the best I ever had. I had the chili verde, fabulous. My wife had the most amazing chicken wrapped in banana leaf , cochinita Pibil. I had never seen on any other Mexican menu. The staff is friendly, helpful and so nice. I've heard a lot about Barrio Queen, the reviews I got from people I knew were always positive so I decided to give it a try. Worst Mistake ever; I only tried BQ bc it was closer than El fundador and I was limited on time. I tried the enchilada trio and surf and turf taco. I also tried the Pineapple drink as well. Enchilada trio consisted of; (1) chicken and cheese (bland chicken and congealed cheese) (1) 1 plain cheese (I sure would've skipped this had I known it would be a solid piece of cheese) (1) carne asada and cheese (passable) somehow I was given a double serving of beans, no rice and some weird squash bell pepper medley that I could've done w/out. The tortillas weren't as great they were weirdly thick as if the masa had gotten wet prior to going on a tamal. The sauce was bland and in desperate need of salt, I threw majority of the food 80% in the damn trash... yes it was that bad. Surf and turf taco was pretty nice I think they might just want to do tacos since there's way more variety in that menu. read more

Quesibirria tacos are a must to try! They are delicious. Vegetarian tacos are not too good, pretty soggy and flavorless. The Gringas taco is good but could use lemon or something so the meat is not too dry. The churros are good, but the caramel filling overpowers the flavor of a traditional churro. Do not get the tres leches if you have had authentic tres leches; it was a huge let down. The esthetics of the plates are all 10/10, but flavor wise it was very underwhelming. I would however rate the Quesibirria tacos a 10/10!!! The service was great, and the ambiance was nice. Jamaica was good, just a tad too sweet, but nothing a little water added to it can't resolve. 3/5 stars overall. read more

Stopped in today for lunch with family and let's just say that this was a very disappointing experience. Overall service was decent, server was attentive, the food....well the food was very lackluster from previous dining occasions at this particular location. Ordered the Tamale trio, mar y tierra tacos, fajita trio(chicken, shrimp & steak) and the chile Relleno. The tamales in general were subpar, having more masa than filling. One of the tamales was topped with this red "salsa" that tasted more like burnt enchilada sauce. They forgot the rice and beans for the tamales and the black beans for the chile relleno. The fajitas could've used a bit more seasoning and a little less charring. Shrimp & steak had the taste of char-grilled, nothing more. The chicken was slightly overcooked. The highlight of the entire meal were the tacos! Very well seasoned and balanced, but really couldn't enjoy them due to the annoyance of pesky flies lingering around.
