I loved this little taco spot! When I made it into Cleveland and dropped my bags at my hotel, I was excited to see that there was a Mexican restaurant just a short walk away. For whatever reason, tacos sounded like the perfect comfort meal after braving the airport. I stepped into Barrio on a weekday afternoon and if I didn't know any better, I would have thought they were closed based on the quiet street and customers inside. There were 6-7 other guests in the restaurant but beyond the music, it was very chill in there. I took a seat at the bar and I was promptly greeted by a nice guy behind the counter. He explained the taco ordering process to me, showing me the order form and even sharing his personal favorites. I love the ordering form! It's cool to see all of the options in one spot, the choices were extensive. I decided to go with 1 specialty taco, the La Tierra, 1 chicken taco and 1 steak taco. I also got a side order of guacamole and pico de gallo. I'm so bummed that I don't remember the second sweet guy who assisted me, I believe it started with a D. He was the sweetest! About 15 minutes after I ordered, he came back with his hands full of bags. We both looked at each other and laughed because, why did y'all give me all of these bags?! LOL. Turns out they bagged each item separately (paper bag and a plastic bag). I felt so greedy omg. I had to quickly rebag it all before I walked out, lol. My tacos were delicious! Albeit, a little soggy due to the sauces I requested to have on them. The guacamole and pico were also delicious but a bittttt too salty and limey. I usually like my guac and pico with a little extra kick, but I could have done with one less dash of salt and one less squeeze of lime, lol. Was here on a weekday for a team lunch. For a Friday afternoon at noon it was pretty empty. So we got seated pretty quick and our server was prompt with chips, salsa and water for all. It took a while for our order to come but they prompt with getting us refills on the chips and salsa. I ordered a couple of the El Jefe Specials - El Jefe Loco and Crunchy Chipotle Chicken and a build your own - pulled pork and chorizo for protein, pico de gallo and corn salsa with chipotle crema and mango habenero sauces. Absolutely terrible experience. The customer service and overall etiquette from the staff was some of the worst I've ever dealt with at a restaurant. We came in to enjoy food, drinks, and watch a game, and instead felt completely unwelcome the entire time. What really pushed it over the edge was the staff intentionally changing the TVs away from the game we were actively watching simply because we weren't rooting for the local team/city. It came across as petty, unprofessional, and honestly childish. Instead of creating a fun sports atmosphere for paying customers, they made it feel hostile and uncomfortable. There's a difference between friendly hometown pride and outright disrespect toward customers. We were polite the entire time and still got treated poorly for no reason. Food was overshadowed by the awful experience. Plenty of places know how to treat customers with basic respect -- unfortunately this isn't one of them. Won't be back. read more

My wife and I normally visit Cleveland for Cavs games and visit this barrio location. Always had great experiences visiting until Saturday (9th). Not sure if the server (Anthony J) was having a bad day but he tossed our chips on the table when we first were seated and a fourth of them fell out onto the table. When the rest of our party got there, we put in our order around 2pm. 45 mins went by and our 8 taco order was still not out (even though the restaurant did not seem too busy - 15 min wait to get in, one section open). We were looking for our waiter but did not see him so we asked the nearby waitress if we could cancel our food order due to the Cavs game being at 3 and we were no longer going to have time to eat. The waitress went and found our waiter and told him that we would need to leave and we would like to cash out (ordered a marg pitcher while waiting). 10 mins go by, my friend sees our waiter Anthony and asks him if he could cash us out so we could make it to the game. Anthony, visibly upset says, "the get the f*#k out of here (n-word slur)" and shoulder bumps my friend. At that point our friend is upset because he is called a racial slur and we are trying to pay and leave. The manager comes out and tells my friend "we can leave and the drink will be comp'd". I am already at the bar with the bartender not knowing of this conversation and the manager comes to the bar and the bartender asks if she should cash me out. The manager says since I handed her my card they have to take the payment when he told my friend it would be comp'd, does not add up. The total for the bill was $41.07. I pay the $41.07, and do not leave a tip on my card. The next day, I am being charged $51.07. Your employees illegally wrote a $10 tip for themselves onto my receipt. What was once a great location for us has been a nightmare experience. We will be finding another restaurant to visit when we come to town. read more

After waiting about 15 minutes (which is kinda long for this type of place) I politely asked, "Did you happen to forget to put in our food?" The blonde bartender responded by being very defensive and seemed very offended by the question. Instead of addressing the situation, she ran to her manager Who was sitting with her back at us and toward The host stand with no knowledge of the situation... When the manager approached us, she did not ask what had happened or try to understand the situation. Instead, she immediately accused us of being rude to her bartender. We calmly explained that we had only asked a simple question about our food. Unfortunately, the manager showed no interest in hearing our perspective and simply shook her head dismissively. When we asked if there were cameras with audio to verify the interaction, she said there were "16 cameras" with no sound. As someone who has worked in the service industry for 12 years at the same restaurant, I was very surprised and disappointed by how this situation was handled. In my experience, a manager should approach concerns with professionalism and a willingness to listen to guests. This was not the case here. My husband and I went here after a night of drinking. The food was awesome, the atmosphere was great for after a nice bar, the music was just right. The bartender was very friendly and let us do our own thing. My husband had 2 of the El Vegano, he really liked it, it had good flavor and was extremely filling. I had the El Jefe Loca, which was soooo good. Everything went well together and I also put some of the Mango salsa from our appetizer chips. The staff was super friendly, patient, and knew their menu well, which made the experience even better. We ordered the Make Your Own Tacos, which was such a fun and customizable option, along with the Tree Amigos (guacamole, queso blanco, and pico de gallo) and their complimentary Salsa Rojo--all of which were fresh and packed with flavor. Stopped in one late night on a whim for a quick snack and a drink to try it out. Barrio is not very allergy friendly. Service was very slow on a night where it wasn't very busy. It took over ten minutes just to get a server to order drinks. I asked her to check if there was anything I could eat with my Allium allergy. She was unsure but would check with the kitchen. I think she forgot because 15 minutes later she hadn't came back. I asked again and was told there wasn't. Apparently she just chose not to come tell me. As she was cleaning up to leave for the night. After she left, we asked a different server. Who actually did check. I was able to only get a Cheese Quesadilla from the children's menu. It wasn't anything special. Everything is pre-marinated or pre-made. Drinks were ok. Not a lot of choices of you don't love Tequila. My husband had a taco which he thought was decent. We ended up here, when our bartender at a downtown brewery recommended their food. So grateful to that bartender. Food was fantastic, we wanted something simple, tacos, seemed to be the way to go. I like the order sheet that allowed me to build my own tacos exactly how I want them. And the variety of ingredients was nice, with 8 different choices for shell/bowl, 15 protein options including plenty of vegetarian choices, 10 cold toppings and a dozen salsas/sauces. That said, the food was just meh. They brought chips and salsa for the table, and we ordered guacamole. The salsa tasted like a spicy thin ketchup. The guac was fine, but nothing special. The chips seemed a bit stale. I got my tacos on soft corn tortillas, and they were ok but stiff and too chewy. I did really like the portabella mushrooms on my taco, and I liked the cilantro rice and black beans - both were flavorful. The pineapple salsa worked well with the shrimp. My husband really liked the Chimichuri, and while I liked it I found it overpowering- too much garlic. Build your own taco. I requested bombshell taco but I'm celiac so Instead of the flour shell I wanted them to make it corn instead. Which has happened at other barrio locations but this one forgot so when i got my taco it was on a flour shell. I asked the server about my ordered and asked them to replace it with a corn shell because I couldn't eat it otherwise they brought my taco wrapped in 2 corn soft shells with nothing in between. What is the purpose of you charging me for a bombshell if you're going to give me 2 lazy corn shells on my taco. We went to Barrio last evening. My husband ordered a draft beer. The server brought a low cal beer in a can, no glass. He told the server that this was not what he ordered. She said they were out of that beer so she just brought him something else. He asked for a different draft beer. Thirty five minutes later and two requests from different servers the beer arrived. The food we ordered took close to 45 minutes. We ordered fish and someone came to the table to say that they had to defrost the fish. I would not recommend this place based on customer service, timing and planning . Don't have fish on the menu if it is not ready to be cooked. I totally understand being busy from baseball games, when we were seated we were not helped for over 15 mins while other tables around us that were seated were helped immediately. Barrio is a trendy, Hispanic themed restaurant in close proximity to the baseball stadium and basketball arena. The tacos are sold as customized shells, protein, and toppings. It's sad how awful this place has gotten since they started out. I haven't been to Barrio in years, but the food quality has really gone downhill. Service was poor, and it wasn't that busy for a Friday evening. Multiple things were forgotten including meals, drinks and sides, even after reminders. I got a chicken bowl, and the chicken was rubbery and fatty. The rice was overcooked and clumpy. The guacamole was bland. The only good things were the chips and salsa and happy hour margaritas (however long it took for them to come out)! This place used to be the go to spot with my girl friends. Sad. read more

We ordered 2 different type of steak tacos- ground beef taco tasted just like Taco Bell, they have the audacity to charge $4.5 for that? La Tierra taco was decent all thanks to the grilled portobello that's in side. short rib taco- most pathetic tacos I've ever seen on a taco. It looked dry and meatless. Chicken taco tasted like McDonald's. Shrimp taco was boring with no flavor and 2 pieces of shrimp. We had to improvise and put some beef in there to finish the rest of the shell. Not sure what the double shell hype is about but it's dry and cold and you can tell the flour tortilla came out of a store bought tortilla package. I finally went up to ask the tall guy who was at the desk for help and was told he was busy. Barely gave me the glance and went back to counting money. She even got frustrated at me when i didn't write down the order on the paper (this was my first time eating here, i wouldn't know). Instead if helping me, she rudely asked me to write them. Sorry, she seemed like she only wanted to do minimal work. Our food came. It was not edible at all and we ended up not eating them. The tacos were COLD and just bad all in all. Create you're own taco!! I love this concept, since I have very specific tastes in food (gluten-free, not too sweet, nothing fried) and I was able to get that with the sheet you fill out with pencil. I got the Thai tofu with pineapple salsa on a soft corn shell - 10/10, and the chicken with a pesto sauce and verde. The chicken itself was kind of dry which I wasn't the hugest fan of, and lacking seasoning, so 6/10 for that one. My three coworkers and I also shared a passion fruit margarita pitcher - perfect amount for 4, but probably great for 3 too if you wanted to get drunk (and hadn't already had a drink or two somewhere else). First tile customer. Food was fantastic. Everything was prepared well and in timely fashion. Great flavor and price. Pay per taco, get as little or as much as you want.
