One a positive note the margarita was very good and the presentation was pretty. As for the food, the steak was very tough, contained a lot of gristle and was bland. The food was far from authentic in my option. The service was also poor. It took about 10 minutes to be greeted once I was seated despite being one of two people in the place. Then about 10 additional minutes to receive utensils and water. Overall the waiter seemed uninterested and bothered. I even received the gen Z stare more than once. To sum it up, the drink was sold but the food did not meet my expectations. The restaurant was decorated nice but the food fell short. read more

The first few times I came here, I really enjoyed my food and service and the chill atmosphere. That ended today. So I brought a friend and it was her first time eating here. We were going to a concert at HOB so this location was really convenient. We also used the valet company on 4th and was told that Blue Agave validates parking. Our server was not very attentive. She disappeared a few times for smoke breaks. She delivered our food then circled back after 1 minute to ask if we liked it. I mentioned I had only tasted my soup and it was delicious. My friend had only had a chip from chips and salsa. She didn't return for 20 or so minutes. The corner tacos that I ordered that was good last time, was lacking in flavor big time. I took one bite and knew there was no way I could finish. I finished my soup. The server came over and I advised that I liked this dish in the past, but this time it was very bland. She didn't apologize or acknowledge my statement at first. Then she asked if I wanted them to remake the SAME entree. I said no thank you and I was nervous to order an additional meal as by this time, time was well spent. I did speak to the manager per the servers request. The manager told me he "never had a complaint" on that dish. I did explain it was good last time but not today. I even mentioned the difference in both times. He did not apologize either and said "taste buds are different". My friend did not like her margarita either. She compared it to a medicine taste. I did enjoy the chips and salsa but left a little hungry since I couldn't finish my tacos. The artwork is really bright and colorful, however that's not enough. Overall, I was so very disappointed. This was a spacious and vibrant spot, featuring a small bar upstairs along with additional seating options. They served lots of diverse types of tacos along with other Mexican fare. I went with carnitas tacos ($16.50). There were three street tacos to an order. It also came with a side. The side chosen was the cilantro lime rice. It was standard white rice with limes and fresh cilantro present. The tacos came with raw onion, and a tomatillo sauce. The tacos were packed with the carnitas. However, they were inconsistent. The meat was very flavorful, but some pieces were dry and tough to eat. The pieces that were good were tasty. The sauce was a good spicy, where it was not unbearable. The raw onions and pickled carrots were a pleasant touch to add to the tacos too. Will I go back? Probably. read more

Stopped in for a lunch before heading to the Museum of Illusions. The interior is decorated nicely and the staff was very friendly. We got some chips and queso for an app which was great. I had the salmon tacos for my entree. The chipotle sauce has a nice kick to it, so careful if you don't like too much spice. I loved it though. We had some friends in from out of town who were staying at the Ritz, so it was decided to meet for dinner at Blue Agave on a Wednesday night. Located on E.4th Street, Blue Agave provides a great view of the street from its huge front window which was open to the cool drizzly night. The entrance to Blue Agave is from the small alley beside the building, you enter into the center of the restaurant which is spread across 2 levels. We were seated at one of the hightop tables in the front. The decor is sleek and modern with some Day of the Dead art, which are kept to a minimum. Tables are granite topped and substantial. We were greeted promptly by out friendly server who brought the beverages promptly. The menu is medium sized with apps, tacos, salads and entrees. We ordered individual meals and an order of chips and salsa for the table (they do not come free). The chips and salsa came out promptly, freshly fried large corn chips and two cups of mild salsa. Overall tasty if not the most exciting and a generous portion that was shared between the 5 of us. Unfortunately this is where the meal started to go off track, as we ended up waiting about a half hour with no other food or updates. Finally our server came over with another serving of the chips and salsa and an explanation that the kitchen was stopped for a while from producing any food since a health inspector had shown up. I don't know if this was true or if the server had just forgotten our order even though the restaurant was not at all busy. Our entrees did come out shortly after this. I got the Seafood Relleno which was a mix of shrimps, crabmeat and scallops grilled and served over the poblano pepper with a cheese sauce and a side of Mexican rice. Overall this was very good with the griddled scallop pieces and crabmeat very tasty and high quality. The shrimp were fairly scarce and were a bit overcooked. The poblano was so overcooked that it had almost no impact. The rice was good. My friends generally enjoyed their meals, although one who got the Carne Asada thought that it was overcooked. Portions were good and the flavors are fairly straightforward relying on quality ingredients over complex seasoning. Finally to cap off the evening it took quite a while to get our checks and pay the bills when we were ready to leave; it seemed the server had lost focus despite the fact that the restaurant was almost empty. Overall while Blue Agave is a very attractive space in the middle of a busy restaurant row and the food is overall good, the issues of consistency and the service lapses make it hard for me to give a strong recommendation. Everything about our visit was wonderful. First, you do have to enter the restaurant from the small alley, but it is well marked. The restaurant was very clean and modern with low lighting. There are two seating areas that we could see - one in the back of the restaurant and one in the front near the bar where you can overlook 4th st. The restaurant is open to the outside in that area, but inaccessible for foot traffic. We started with some margaritas and the trio sampler. The guacamole, queso, and salsa were all fabulous, but the guacamole was our favorite. The margaritas had great flavor and plenty of tequila. My favorite was the spicy mango. They offer a margarita flight where you can choose 3, but the seasonal ones are not an option. Our entrees were just as tasty and well prepared. The melting chimichanga with chicken was to die for. My husband got a chicken dish with spinach that he also enjoyed. The white cilantro rice was soft and well flavored. Service was spot on as well. I had dinner at Blue Agave before a concert at Rocket Mortgage Fieldhouse and it was super convenient! I recommend getting here early before a show since the restaurant filled up really quickly, but around 5pm we were able to get a table right away. There were a lot do great menu options - I tried the bowl with veggies, and appreciate that there were a lot of different protein options for adding to your bowl. The ingredients were really fresh and flavorful and it was the perfect amount to feel full without being stuffed. The queso was also really good and the margaritas were super big, though a bit expensive. Overall it was a good experience and I'd go back next time I'm in the city! read more

Staying at a hotel directly in front of East 4th Street we had walked past Blue Agave several times during our stay and decided to try it on our last night in Cleveland. We ordered the queso with Chorizo for an appetizer and it was absolutely delicious!! For our entrees, I ordered the steak Chimichanga and my husband ordered the Carne Asada. We were both very happy with our orders. Plentiful portions and bold on flavor, we were beyond impressed. Service and atmosphere were on point as well. Went here after a Guardians game on a Wednesday evening. The place is in a good location and has very good ambiance. Dress is casual. Shorts and a t-shirt are just fine. We were seated immediately but it took approximately 15 minutes for a server to take our drink orders. The servers were friendly but there weren't enough of them. They were slammed even though the place was only half full. The margarita machine was broken. Apps were ho-hum. Chips and queso were mostly chips. No salsa comes with it (which is okay with me because that's just how some places do but some folks might be expecting salsa as a default, so beware). Our friends' elote looked good. Entrees were average. I had the chicken tinga street tacos. The best part has the veggies and quinoa I selected as my side. That was the star of the dish. It came with three very full tacos. Wife had chicken chipotle tacos which she said were good as well. She said the rice was mushy but had good flavor. I would give this place a 3.5 if I could. Bumping up to a 4 because of the friendliness. There are better places in Cleveland to get Mexican so I hear. If you just want a decent, inexpensive meal, then this place will work. read more

I am disappointed with our experience a few months ago. We were seated across the stairs by their server station upon arrival. Sadly, it was downhill from there. It took awhile for our server to greet us, but she did bring waters upon arrival. We immediately ordered 3 lime margaritas on the rocks and the salsa, guac and queso trio with chips. We received our appetizer long before our drinks and I'd say the bar wasn't even that busy; the seats at the bar were maybe 50% occupied, the tables infront of us were done and heading out, the table beside us were already eating, and the tables across us by the stairs were empty. I don't know why it took that long to receive 3 lime margs on the rocks but hey we got 'em. Guac and queso were great, but the salsa tasted like it came out of a jar. We placed our entree orders shortly after: street tacos with sopa azteca, cochinita tacos with spicy veggies & quinoa, and the carne asada fajitas. The food came at a decent time but I wasn't too impressed with the temperature. The carne asada didn't come with the beans, rice and tortillas until maybe 3ish minutes until after the skillet was presented. The sopa azteca was not seasoned and it honestly didn't taste like anything; the street tacos' flavour outweighed the fact that the soup was just very bland. Although, the cochinita tacos were fine. After the first batch of tortillas were eaten with the fajitas, we politely requested for another one but waited about 5 minutes for them. We requested it with what looked like a food runner on his way back to the kitchen, a followup with maybe a busser, then finally got ahold of our server and asked for the third time and she was the one who ran it up the stairs to us shortly after. Now remember how I mentioned we were seated by their server station... well they had to bring the dirty dishes downstairs using the elevator (which was also about 3 ft. from me) and left the garbage can right beside my seat. I was sitting in the booth and had I needed to get out, I wouldn't be able to because the garbage was that close. It was disgusting. I was immediately turned off. Now, I understand you have to get the plates to the kitchen but you cannot forget the trash out like that. Someone eventually put it back into the station but it took longer than it needed to.. especially when it should've been done immediately upon taking the cart out of the station. I don't know if it was fair of me to hold this place to high expectations and standards based on the other Mexican resto experiences I've been to in CLE (one being, I believe, their sister restaurant and imo best in cle: Tres Portrillos in Beachwood), but I don't think I'd return to this location again. read more

I came in on Cinco De Mayo, probably their busiest day of the year. Despite the chaos, the staff did their best to keep the waiting list orderly. We waited for about 70 minutes for a seat and I wondered if it would be worth it. It was! For the holiday, they used a special menu with some of their most popular features. The grilled burrito was probably the best I've had with plenty of queso and seasoned chorizo. The Mexican rice was delicious. My friend had and order of nachos and thoroughly enjoyed it. Lunch time pick after visiting the Rock n Roll Hall of Fame. The outside patio was packed and music was lively so it immediately drew us in. The host had an attitude from the very beginning and he unfortunately didn't represent the establishment on a positive way. Apparently you shouldn't ask if there are any items in the menu that he'd suggest. We sat inside at a small table top which was perfect for the two of us. Our server was much more pleasant and we followed her lead with every recommendation. Blood Orange margarita...YES PLEASE! It did not disappoint!! Started with queso and added chorizo. The chips were fresh and perfectly salty and we scraped out the dish. We weren't super hungry so we split the grilled fish street tacos and Mexican rice. There is not a thing I would change.
