What a gem! truly a special place that I was happy to stumble upon! We stopped and took notice because a woman brought a lawn chair and a book and set up an umbrella... all of which sparked our interest since we're new to town. We notice the signs... best bread awards which intrigued us more but it was ungodly hot out! But this wonderfully kind woman mentioned to us to grab the umbrellas the bakery puts out while the line forms; that it was worth the wait and it'd make it more bareable. We felt inspired and since we had time and were thereto stick around and boy we weren't disappointed! The line formed about 25 deep and counting; it confirmed our good timing and the hype. When it was our turn we're instructed to come in in a sort of pairs and low grouping since they don't have much space inside, and to close the door to keep the air conditioning inside... PLEASE close the door quickly behind you; it's a kindness for everyone involved. Next we were whisked away in our mind by the smell of all the fresh baked breads! We got the heritage and some special flour to take home. It was divine really a stellar loaf ! I will say, though I hate to be that guy a bit but that was no bagel ... if it was marketed as a Rosemary Round I'd have applauded and said well done, it's a nice sort of round bread. But it wasn't hitting any sort of mark for any bagel I've ever seen (and I've seen a lot whew! Even store bought it's like that. Now, I'm not saying it's bad! I'm just saying it's misleading... I ordered it with tampered expectations knowing it's not like east coast, and that's fine! But it was like apples and oranges; yeah both fruits that's about it. As a rosemary bread in a round shape it was tasty but that'd be my only sort of complaint. It's worth the line, worth the wait. The staff was nice and you cant get fresher. Few lines are worth waiting in, but the line at Barrio Bread is absolutely worthwhile, so be sure to stop here early in the AM, when visiting Tuscon. The first day we tried to come here two hours before closing, and they were already completely sold out for the day. The next day we arrived in the am to a line out 30 people deep, that moved fairly quickly, but expect to spend about 20-30 minutes minimum waiting for bread. Is it worth it? It is. We got several loaves: their fruit loaf, a multigrain heritage loaf, some olive oil and salt focaccia and my absolute favorite a small sized chewy Cuban roll warm from the oven and covered in sesame seeds. The sesame Cuban roll was so delicious, it reminded me of my favorite Montreal bagel at St. Viateur's, perfectly fresh, warm from the oven and chewy. read more

We are always on the hunt for local and family run businesses. First tried Don's bread at his Tucson location. We're heading there now so what better time for a review then now. He recently started selling his bread in Gilbert a few miles from our house which we've been going to weekly. See review for that location. He is a 2022 James Beard award winner. He is also a local as he grew up in Arizona. From his website- "Don is committed to working with local farmers, chefs, and other food producers to strengthen the local grain economy and grow the local food network. In 2015 he was awarded a USDA Local Food Promotion Grant that significantly helped him to increase collaboration with others and expand production with a new bakery." It's a long trek for us to get to this amazing outpost off of Brdwy/Country Club but we do it about once a month and never regret.... simply THE best artisan baked breads in Tucson (and now fresh off of the James Beard culinary "Oscar" for best bakery in the country 6/2022). At the risk of sacrificing availability of our favs, they include the epi loaf (seeded or plain) and the cheddar/jalapeno loaf. Still warm and then covered with cream cheese while we are still sitting in the parking lot... Mmm! Sometimes we'll feel like the cherry/chocolate loaf, especially if we have guests and/or plan to make a bunch of french toast. I realize that baking these in time for their 9am door-opening on Saturdays, is likely a heavy 4am challenge, but I wish they were also open on Sundays! I know you need some sleep, Don, so all is forgiven :) Tip: there's ALWAYS a line on Saturdays. Whether you get there at 8:15am before there 9am opening or you arrive at 10:30am, you WILL have a minimum 30-45 minute wait in a standing-only line of usually 25-50 people long. It is east-exposed so you're entire time will be in the sun so bring a hat/parasol and you'll be fine. I usually bring the wknd paper too (old skool!) and then pass the sections down the line. read more

Barrio Bread is a truly special place and we're lucky to have Don Guerra here in Tucson. I've enjoyed every type of bread I've sampled, but the cranberry apricot and super seed whole wheat. I finally made it out to a Focaccia Friday pizza pop-up last night and tried a little bit of everything (margherita, pepperoni, verde and potato.) All were fantastic, but the potato was my favorite- savory and unique. So, so yummy. I also brought home some Barrio bagels and am looking forward to having one for breakfast tomorrow. read more

Don is a James Beard winner and makes wonderful product, so it's no surprise that there's always a line! They've added a pop-up tent to provide shade, and the line moves pretty quickly. Parking may be your biggest challenge. The interior of the shop is small and quaint. One small group at a time is allowed into the lobby to make selections. A shelf on the left houses the flour blends and grains. The loaves of bread are on a large shelving unit behind the counter. Though the staff is very kind and patient in answering questions, it's helpful to everyone else in line if you look at the website in advance to know what they will have (if not sold out!). Most recently, we took out-of-town guests to Barrio. They selected Pan de Kino (wild yeast, white Sonoran wheat) and Cinnamon Raisin (wheat dough with Thompson and golden raisins). Both were delicious and stayed fresh for the several days that we noshed on them. One of our guests loves to bake bread and took a flour blend home. Barrio is well worth the wait and cross-town trip. read more

My secret to finding good food often starts by just seeing how long the line at the restaurant. Barrio Bread take this to a new level, with locals lining up almost an hour early on a Saturday morning to be able to pick up this bread. And regardless of how long you wait, it is still worth it! Even if you don't get the bread you originally wanted because you just can't go wrong with whatever you order. I have been multiple times and have enjoyed whatever I have picked up. These breads make a fantastic pickup for any dinner and will impress as a gift to others. My personal favorites are the Cinnamon Raisin and the Heritage loaves. I've probably bought 10 different loaves of bread from them and have never been disappointed. A MUST visit while in Tucson. Nothing beats the locally made bread. read more

***Worth the wait*** A must if you're a local or a visitor stopped in on Saturday to grab some bread for the week! I had eaten Barrio bread at many of the local restaurants and fell in love with it. Parking was a little limited, but finally found a spot in front of Bieber breakfast club. The line was from the front door of barrio bread and looped around the parking lot just south of Broadway. Line seemed to be running fast so I waited. Took about 1/2 hr to get to the front of the line. As I waited I made sure to look up the website so I could be ready to order what I wanted. While I waited every patron was practicing social distancing and wearing mask. That made me happy and made me feel comfortable waiting on that line. Once I approached the shop there was a daily menu on the window with prices and what was available. That made it convenient and easier to know what was left or sold out. I got to the window and the owner/baker himself was serving the customers (Don Guerra). I went with a baguette, focaccia, Pain epi, and a jalapeño cheddar loaf. It all was fresh and warm! Took me back to when my nana would bake her bread in a wood oven growing up. Made it home and cut up slices for a charcuterie board and some sandwiches with the jalapeño loaf. All was fantastic and flavorful. It was definitely worth the wait and will continue to purchase my bread from this place! read more

Oh My! We lucked out and saw a post on Instagram about his popup pizza night. It was absolutely amazing! The focaccia is delicious on its own but with the added toppings it was heavenly. He had four kinds of pizza to pick from, we got several of the margarita and the pepperoni. He and his son did an amazing job. Had this on the radar for a while. This is the first time I've made it from Phoenix to try. I got here around 930 on a Tues morning, and there was a line. Not long, roughly 10 min. Once inside, they were super kind and helpful. I wanted to try a couple of things and had questions. I ended with their small Baguette, marinara foccacia and a Khorasan ancient grain loaf. Everything was amazing. I'd get this mini Baguette every time. It didn't last long. Focaccia was delicious on its own and fantastic in all it was dipped or scooped with. Khorasan had a flavor I'm not sure I've had in bread. Earthy and unique in flavor the bread itself was crusty and springy soft inside. Great experience. Amazing bread. The two loaves that I purchased exceeded all expectations. They were flavorful, soft/pillowy, everything you could want in homemade bread. I can't remember what time of day I had visited, but there was a decent sized line of folks waiting. Don't forget to wear your sunscreen, but the line moves at a pretty good pace so that you're not waiting out in full sun for a very long time. This place is pure magic! We came here last weekend and there was already a line out the door when we arrived two hours after they opened. It moves quickly though, and we were pleasantly surprised to see the owner there chatting with his customers. It says a lot about him that he's there in the weekend hustle and you can tell that this place runs on excellent quality flour and love. Our daughter got one of their little birote rolls, which ended up being on the house since we only wanted one and not the whole bag. See above regarding customer service! We got a massive loaf of whole grain spelt, and dear lord, we were ripping pieces off of it and shoving them into our mouths like ravenous animals as soon as we got in the car. WOW! One of the best loaves of bread that we have ever had--bursting with that welcome sour flavor and platonic ideal of consistency and chew-factor. This thing was the size of a tortoise shell it was so big, but we put it in our carry on luggage to take home and it was still A+ over two days later. We're so excited to have some in the freezer stash now. While we wish there were some tables to sit down and enjoy the bread with some butter, the whole point of this operation seems to be to grab your bread and go, and we were there for it. If we're ever in Arizona again, we will 100% be coming back. Five merited stars! read more

I love bread. I love all types of bread. The bread at Barrio was probably some of the best bread I have had in my lifetime, and I've eaten a lot of bread. "There is no smell better than a warm bakery" - Charles P Thompson. I got huge loaves of Pain au Levain, Cranberry-Walnut, and the Heritage bread with the artsy flour stencil of the Sonoran desert. My friend also let me try the jalapeno cheddar. I had so much bread that day (with an assortment of butter and jams) that all I wanted to do was lounge around watching the new Breaking Bad movie and stuffing my face with bread. I wasn't even hungry for lunch or dinner. The jalapeno cheddar was probably my favorite, but if I wanted something lighter or to spread cheese or jam on, I would go with the other loaves that I tried. The website for Barrio Bread also informs you the best storage methods to keep that bread fresh and the crust firm and crunchy, so I would definitely check that out. Call us crazy to risk getting sunburnt while waiting an hour for bread. Buttttt it was def worth it! the bread was soft on the inside and crunchy on the outside. It made perfectly for shakshouka and I'm sure it is an even better sandwhich bread. We got the heritage, focaccia loaf, olive bread, and the chocolate cherry! Our favorites were the olive bread and the chocolate cherry for sure! Mr Don Guerra definitely knows what he's doing. Not only that but the breads are so beautiful! I heard someone in line from Oregon stopped by to buy their famous bread after reading about them in the NY Times & another from South Dakota came by after learning about them via Yelp . The lady in front of me told me that she had been buying their bread on a weekly basis before they became " famous." Among the tasty looking options of bread, I got the Cinnamon Raisin , Locavore, Pan Rustico, & Super Seed. We had them for lunch , snacks , dinner, & anything in between for two days. I found this place on Yelp and was impressed with all the reviews. We made sure to stop to pick up some bread on our weekly trip to Tucson. We got 1/2 dozen everything bagels, a couple of cubano buns and a loaf of walnut cranberry bread. The bagels and cubano bread are good but the winner is the walnut cranberry bread. Most reviewers have nailed the ethos of barrio bread. A high quality product using speciality local grains that people will be happy to line up for. I came here for the first time on a Friday. Arrived at opening ( 9 am) parking without issue. Line was already 30 minutes plus. While they still had plenty of offerings some things were already running low (or out) by 9:30 am. The bread was fresh and amazing! Sliced up some loafs and gave to neighbors so they could try it as well. Unfortunately for me it's 45 - 50 minute drive from my place. Next time I'll wake up earlier and get there a good 20 minutes before opening. So I can be sure to get everything offered. This place is an easy 5 star Yelp establishment.
