Food breakdown: My fish of the day (snapper) with a tapenade on it was delicious, albeit a bit salty. The side of white rice was a good balance for all that flavor. I had a Bohemia dark beer for 55 pesos... can't beat that! My wife's coconut shrimp were gigantic, and I liked the mango sauce. I'd say the coating and deep frying was just a little too much. Kind of fried out the flavor and made it kind of batter-y. My daughter liked her shrimp skewer... I didn't try it. This place is the bommmmmmmb. The restaurant that everyone seems to go to has average food at best. This place definitely looks jenky, but the lady who runs this restaurant is a sweet heart. She even took tequila shots with us. We went with a group of 14, so we practically ordered almost everything on the menu. We had no complaints whatsoever. Resist the natural inclination to go to smokeys. Resist it. This is where it's at. This is the real baja style home cooking. Whatever they're serving, it's amazing. Claudia was so great, she showed us some photos of the plates and how they were served. Food was great! My daughter loved the seafood pasta, the coconut shrimp was good, they even made a fried fish and shrimp platter for my dads birthday. That was excellent as well. Claudia even went across the street to the store and got a piece of birthday cake and candles to give to my dad for his 81st bday. Claudia (sp?) made Shrimp Emporio for my first meal, the second and third times we ate there she prepared the fish the guys caught that day. Nothing flashy w.r.t. atmosphere, really good seafood fettuccine + salad. Shrimp quesadilla are very good. Menu options are good, not extensive. Food well prepared. I took someone's advice on here not to get tempted in to going in to Smokey's it look nice and everything but this place Barriles Grill food and Customer Service was out the ball park. What a gem ! This place is not much to look at from the street, especially with the much more modern "Smokey's" across the street, but do not be fooled ! Do yourself a HUGE favor and step into old Mexico for some hospitality and delicious food. Claudia is your hostess and waitress and she is a sweetheart. I would give 1O stars if I could! Amazing restaurant... best seafood around. We spent four nights in Los Barriles and went here twice for dinner, it was that good. Ordered off the menu the first night and then brought our catch of the day the second time and they made sashimi and various other fish dishes for us. Claudia is a wonderful hostess. We have been coming to Los Barriles for 25 years. The restaurants have really upped their game. Barriles Grill is a wonderful addition. We were a little apprehensive as our daughter is a vegetarian. When we walked in and asked about vegetarian options we were told "don't worry about it", by Claudia. She was right! Our daughter loved her vegetarian taco. I started with an order of ceviche. It was delicious. Then I had the seafood ballon (balloon) which was fish, scallops, shrimp, and octopus on top of rice, cooked in a foil "balloon". Absolutely delicious. My wife and son both had tacos which they thoroughly enjoyed. As other reviewers have said, the margaritas (strawberry and mango) were delicious. The final touch was flan, which was good. I have been going to Los Barriles for about fifteen years and have enjoyed the on going and growing food scene in town. But I'm here to tell you about a little Gem "Barriles Grill" sitting right across the street from Smokey's. Barriles Grill is a nondescript little place I fell in love with for two reasons; one Claudia, the owner, who pours great Margaritas and serves ice cold beer, and two - THE FOOD!!! The first time we went there, I really was not expecting what I was about to experience, and man was I surprised! We were five hungry amigos, so we went for the party barrilena platter! It came with a deep fried red snapper covered with shrimp and sauce that was surrounded by four different kinds of prawns,: garlic prawns, coconut prawns ( I have never had coconut prawn that good before) Rancho prawns in a salsa style sauce with octopus, and fourth-scallops with prawns covered in a yummy Alfredo sauce. This dish was served with rice and salad. Each of us had two drinks and the platter, in addition to guacamole, chips, & salsa. The entire meal with the drinks for all five of us only cost 100 bucks, that's about twenty bucks each. That is hard to beat anywhere, and no way in hell in the States! All of Claudia's seafood is fresh daily. Claudia is very engaging with her customers. The topic that we or were we going fishing the next day came up, and she informed us that if we wanted, she would cook up our catch if we would like. The next day we were lucky enough to land a marlin, so that afternoon we dropped some of it off for chef to apply chef magic to, and again we were taken by surprise. Her chef made a marlin meat ball soup that I could not stop eating! Then the platter of marlin came out and was cooked three different ways. Again, off the hook good! So have fun eating around Los Barriles, but if you miss Claudia's "Barriles Grill" you shorted your self big time! read more
