We grabbed a few for a lunch later in the day along with a pair of pastries, and some coffee. We ate the pastries in their tearoom and the sandwiches a few hours later on the road. Both were a-maz-ing. The sandwiches were made fresh, stayed great until we got to the later in the day, and were portioned well. I kind of want to go back to get another few sandwiches, but sadly I've left Scotland and am back in the states (and my routine work-life). If you are in the area or plan to be, plan to work in a stop. Enjoy!

It was about 9 am and already quite busy, it seemed like everybody who was on the way to Isle of Skye or Glencoe was stopping here. They are known for good sandwiches so we got 2 different ones to try. Both sandwiches came with a purple color coleslaw that was good but we found all the coleslaw in Scotland had too much mayo for our preference. Pastrami with Swiss sandwich: Proper pastrami that is a nice pink with black crust from the nitrates and smoking process. Plenty of cheese and meat but it was very large, had to save half for later or I wouldn't have been able to drive. Turkey sandwich: with pickles and white cheddar, they had some kind of mayo spread that was good. This was surprisingly tasty and we ended up eating more than the kids. If you go down the alley on the side you can eat at a little lake in the back. There's a hill with Worden steps you can climb and from the top you can see a small, old cemetery. They had a wide assortment of country loaves for sale as well!

So yes this is in an area called Halfway and a lot of you have probably never heard of it let alone…read morebeen to it. Still everywhere deserves a review, especially when it is the best local Chinese takeaway around here! Shanghai Delight serves up hundreds of Chinese takeaways every day and is always mobbed yet the food is always very good. I am not saying it is sit down city centre quality, but very few takeaways are. It is though very good at what it does do. Personal favourites are salt and chilli chips, salt and chilli chicken, chopped ribs in black bean sauce, beef Kung po, beef curry and chicken satay. None of these of course are advised as part of any healthy diet plan that I can imagine and are probably far from authentic. But they do taste very good. If you are up this way and fancy a Chinese feast then you should give this place a try.

So Shanghai is definitely a delight and does the best Chinese takeaway! If it wasn't packed with delicious calories I would eat it everyday! Owned by a husband and wife who have lived here for year originally born in Hong Kong, the husband the head in the kitchen you sometimes hear chatting in Cantonese to the rest of his crew he never crosses over. Occasionally the wife is on the desk she very friendly speaks English but only to the punters. A couple times a year they will close for a couple of weeks where there take a holiday a go back to HK to visit family. Ok so the best dishes are Salt and chili chips, Kung Po beef, salt and chili chicken. A wee beef curry never hurts anyone! To be honest of i was ordering Chinese and Shanghai was closed I'd just go without. All or nothing!

I dragged Stu out of his festering pit and we made our way to Grant's the Bakers. I had passed it several times while sprinting for the train and the smell emanating from the bakery almost caused me to forget all about the train and go and live in there. Hot rolls and hot drinks are available to take away at very reasonable prices. At 10.30 on a Sunday, the queue was out the door and spilling untidily onto the street. Builders, locals and hungover tramps waited patiently in front of the cake filled counter and sizzling hotplate of over-processed meats. The smell was fantastic. Thanks to the two wee wummin behind the counter the queue moved quickly. We bought 6 totty scones and hastened home to fry them! They were big, misshapen and had an almost meaty bite to them. This makes them high up there in my Totty Scone Hall of Fame. Yes, I do actually have a Totty Scone Hall of Fame. I am rather a freak, I do fear. Next time I think I'll go for an iced donut.

I've also just discovered it's now called the Allanwater Brewhouse! A group of us visited here on Saturday night. I'd never been to Bridge of Allan but was pleasantly surprised at what a nice area it seemed to be. The brewery is off the main road and it can be a little confusing where to go but thankfully we stumbled through the right door (look for people milling around in the beer garden, and then go in there!). Inside it's a pretty interesting space to sit in - high ceiling, lots of beers adorning the walls as well as beer paraphernalia and a cosy, well worn vibe. For a better description of what it's like read Jenni G's review! We ended up sitting right by the fire (which, although it wasn't on was still warm) on beer kegs with cushions which was a really cosy spot. For a Saturday night it was busy but not heaving so it was good to be able to get a seat and have a chat without it being too noisy or cramped. I didn't go up the bar myself so can't comment on the staff or prices, but they seemed to have an interesting selection of beers (mango) and I enjoyed my oj & lemonade (haha!).
