I LOVED this wee place. It's a wee hidden gem in Bridge of Allan and not the easiest of places to find but worth leaving the main street for an adventure of an evening! This place is right up my street - very old school, with old beer barrels for bar stools, tartan head to toe and shelves covered in literally hundreds of old bottles of ale - a very interesting place aesthetically. It's lovely and cozy and has a distinctly bothy-esque feel to it: very Scottish without being cheesy or over the top! (Och aye!)
It is slightly (and I mean very slightly) more expensive than your average pint, but the quality and variety of ale on offer is really superb. Also, what I found unique and ingenious is the fact that they let you sample the ale before you commit to buying something (I ended up trying a few!) This is a fantastic idea, as often when I've visited speciality places like this before I've gone with whatever sounds most weird and wonderful (ooh! Chili Beer!) to discover that its usually weird and not-so-wonderful. I sampled the mango and the Czech varieties and both were delightful!
The staff were warm and friendly and very chatty which is always a pleasant bonus - very knowledgable about the products on offer and willing to give you some advice about which of the many options to choose. (As someone who is pretty content with a good German beer, I found this pretty indispensable!) There was a real happy atmosphere - locals mixing with visitors and regular punters giving the staff some banter. Definitely worth a visit if you're around the Stirling area. read more
