Anyhoo, when I was in a Byres Road establishment today and saw that their baked potatoes started at the £2.50 mark, I was proven right at the expense. It's probably a catch 22 for them that if they keep it low it won't cover costs blah blah etc... It came across as a calm environment but you would think that it'd be over run by school kids, especially as the high school is literally a stones throw away as well as the primary across the road. Blissfully they aren't as The Little Tearoom have a notice up to say that children must be accompanied with an adult. So it's an unruly kiddie free zone. If you are seated near the windows people-watching is SO good and doing it from the high-backed Mackintosh chairs gives the whole experience an very surreal quality. The third floor was not occupied when we went and I liked the blue colors, this is also the floor where the bathrooms are. My wife wanted to try a traditional British afternoon tea experience, for some reason we have never tried it before and have been to the UK, Scotland, and Ireland before. The appealing this is its the stereotype of the experience with fancy pots and teacups for the tea, and stacks of small plates on a carrying tray like a movie. They offer a "classic" afternoon tea which has a mixture of sandwiches with smoked salmon, egg salad, cucumber, and ham. Sweets are fruit scones or cake with homemade short bread rounds. My wife got this one. They also offer a "savory" afternoon tea which I got. The sandwiches are the same but it comes with haggis on oatcakes, sausage pastry roll, chicken, and a cheese and tomato tart. I got this and we both loved these. For teas we highly, highly recommend the House blended tea "Mackintosh". It's like a "super" version of black tea and I never had one like it. Birthday banners, complimentary birthday tablet and an afternoon tea raffle for every customer. And of course, the perfect excuse for cake. We are in just the right place for it, after all. Crisp and white and fresh like a beautiful spring day, the tearoom is cute and cosey and the welcome warm. Whilst small in size, there are certainly a good amount of seats and despite arriving slap-bang in the middle of lunchtime, we were able to get a table for two. The first thing that caught my eye was the crockery. We had some dainty little matching cups, bowls, saucers. And there were some more pretty selections displayed on the walls. Tea is always served best in a magnificent teacup. The bluebell are testament to this. It certainly is a the perfect spot for tea and cake! I had Cock-a-Leekie soup which was delicious, wholesome, warming. - The perfect prelude to the main event. Oh boy, did we have trouble choosing a cake from the selection. Despite it being the Bluebell's super special first birthday, you will always find such a plentiful selection of cake, including plenty of gluten free selections and it really was a delight to hear about just how many cakes and gluten free options they prepare daily.
