I am writing this review over two years since I was there at Thomas Tunnock's wee shop in Main Street, Uddingston. Oh how I wish I was there right now! Oh my!
I am writing this at Raymond Terrace, north of Newcastle in New South Wales, Australia. My mouth is watering thinking of all the possibilities. I had always wanted to go to Scotland. My mother was born there and came to Australia when she was five years old. She never got to see Scotland again and died at 55. There I was at about 60 years old. We only had 5 days in Scotland. We had a hired motor home, knew nothing about Tunnocks, drove into Uddingston in the cloak of night and parked behind Main Street overnight. In the morning, my wife still asleep, I got out and went for a walk. What a wonderful discovery! Tunnocks! The ladies at the counter were so friendly and the place was so homely. I could have spent hours there chatting away. I bought enough pies etc to last the two of us for the next couple of days. Ooh the rhubarb and apple pies! The meat pies! I believe no self-respecting Scotsman or woman can say they know their country if they haven't been to Uddingston to have a taste of Tunnock's pies. And no traveller to anywhere near Glasgow can say they have seen it all unless they have been to this wee shop. I hope they still continue for many years to come and make many, many more cups of tea and love their customers the way they do. May God bless you all. I think Tunnocks was the highlight of my too short stay in wonderful Scotland. I wish I had woken my wife to share my enjoyment. However, she enjoyed the results of my discovery and still listens as I recount to one and another the memory of my visit to the place I would love to return to.
