It was a rainy day: drizzling : that consistency of rain that makes you feel a bit run down. I was met with the most delicious, warming coffee: a very smooth latte, that had such a lovely taste that there was no need for a drop of sugar. They were out of most of their pastries by the time I sat in--due to their popularity, I have no doubt. I chose one of their remaining items: a small cake that had a touch of lemon and a raspberry on top of a creamy frosting. It was delicious--a welcomed treat when I felt in need of a pick me up. I did not have a chance to test their food so am unable to comment. Do note however: This is a VERY small place. Cozy to be sure, but small and by no means for larger groups. It is ideal for the soloist and duos to come in and have a fairly quick coffee, cake, and food (I assume). This is NOT a place to study. There are no comfortable lounge chairs, chairs or tables. The seating is composed of stools that reside at two bars. It's kind of reminding me of Italian style cafes where you drink your espresso at the bar, across from the barista who just served it to you (though in Rome, they don't offer you stools even!). It really does have it all - fresh fruit and vegetables all leafy and colourful, a gin lovers corner, wonderful cheese and meats deli, health foods section including a variety a GF flours, breads and oatcakes (try their own oatcakes, completely different from the brand that sounds like Talkers but sooo much tastier!), tray upon tray of freshly laid eggs...I could go on but you get the idea! And that's just the food section! They also have a glorious gift section where I could've easily spent a small fortune. Everything from kitchen gadgets to picnic baskets, kiddie gifts to Emma Bridgewater pottery and everything in between. I spotted a few local producers too which I loved as I always like to see locals businesses supporting each other. Then there's the café/restaurant which has a few outdoor tables but plenty inside if they're taken; the day I visited it was glorious but somehow we got lucky and got a table outside (my shoulders can prove that #scottishtan!...). The menu has lots of tasty options incorporating as much of their own produce as possible - I opted for the Homemade Chicken Liver pate while my parents both had the Smoked Ayrshire Ham & Gloagburn Curried Banana Chutney sandwich (Dad went hunting for the ham to buy later he was that impressed!). (Tip well guys! :P) This place has got a very chilled out, laid back vibe. It's the kind of place after you've been a few times, they remember your order and your favourite seat. The coffee is reasonably priced BUT remember to flash your student card for a little extra discount! Also, if you buy a coffee before 10am you get free refills all day which was always a great incentive for me to be up and at 'em before the morning rush! There is also a good selection of cakes and snacks on offer (the cheese and bacon toasties are delish!) and soup for lunchtime hunger pangs. They also have a reasonable selection of soft drinks and milkshakes on offer and an amazing selection of weirdly named teas (try the Magic Tea, it's a revelation.) It's also open til 8pm which is a bonus! The Burgh is also available for events too - I've attended group German lessons there, a Lush party, an SSP meeting, an open mic night and even had a tutor hold a seminar in the place. I'm pretty sure it's free to book so it's great for wee gatherings in a nice cosy setting. There's a vast selection of board games on offer too, as well as hundreds of donated to books to simply flick through or to buy with a donation. My partner got the hot version, and it was much better because you could taste the beans more clearly. Overall, I was very satisfied with the coffee. The sandwiches look and taste awesome, where the flavours really do compliment each other. There are a few sweet treats available in the right sizes, nothing worse than the usual massive wedges of gateau or meringue that you normally see. Having had brunch here previously, heading here for lunch was something I was excited about. It was very busy this time round so service was understandably a little slower. We did have a short wait for a table but it really wasn't long till we were seated considering it was peak lunching hour. Oh my word. Sandwich heaven. I had the bacon and mozzarella baguette with hot salsa and guacamole and it was absolutely delicious. Lots of cheese, lots of bacon, lots of yum. The Hideaway is just the perfect spot for tea and cake, I definitely want to sample their baked goods soon. Very, very soon!
