Barn Joo is a buzzy, trendy Korean spot with farm-to-table ingredients. I have been eyeing this place every time I passed by, and finally decided to go in. I went straight for the hot and spicy wings - just because I was really craving wings. They came out extra crispy with a nice sticky glaze. It had just enough heat while still having some level of sweetness. Needless to say - I devoured these chicken wings. I wasn't hungry enough to order an entrée this time, but next time I'm probably getting the chili shrimp or maybe the kimchi fried rice. We came to Barn Joo to watch a World Cup game. It has a nice atmosphere with both a bar and dining areas, but I don't love the smell--maybe because I'm not a fan of kimchi. The service was great, though, and we enjoyed our food and drinks while watching the game. They have happy hour from 3-6pm, so we started with drinks and oysters. Afterwards, I had the Sizzling Stone Bowl Bibimbap ($26+) was smaller than I'd expected, but the Tofu and Mushroom was very tasty. I reserved a table for my partner and me to celebrate my partner's graduation from med school. Our host was very nice to congratulate us on our arrival. Been visiting Barn Joo since 2018 and has always been my favorite spot. The food here is absolutely excellent, flavorful, fresh, and perfectly prepared. Every dish we tried hit the mark. The wings (which my friends had ordered) according to them they were juicy, crispy, and coated in just the right amount of sauce. The shrimp tempura were plump with a great texture, and the Kimchi Creamy Shrimp were incredibly fresh and tasted so, so good. Service was top-tier. He stepped right up and invited my wife and me to have a drink at the bar while the staff readied the dining room. Big bar/restaurant in the heart of Union Square. It's a good place to meet people for drinks and snacks - Happy Hour is from 4-7 I believe. Lunch deals are good value, the portions are huge. They have two sorts - one that's more Americanized with burgers, fried chicken sandwiches, etc, and the other that's more of a Korean lunch set. The food is excellent but less authentic than in Korea Town and I think it's a good introduction to the flavors of Korean cuisine. The servers are friendly, and the decor is nice. However, they still have plexiglass dividers between tables that they installed post-pandemic, which I don't mind, but it is a bit odd. It is a good spot if you find yourself in Union Square, great for larger groups and there's also a Korean BBQ setup upstairs which I haven't tried yet. read more

We already knew what we wanted because of the wait time so we put the orders in right away. 1 sweetened iced tea, soy garlic chicken wings to share and the Kimchi creamy shrimp each. A busser dropped off the tea and left and as soon as my friend tasted it, she said something was off. I tried it and it was pretty bad. It tasted like dirty mop water. The server was no where to be found. After another 10 minutes, a busser dropped of the wings and I told him about the tea. He said he'd he the server, server never came. We enjoyed the wings. They were so delicious with a nice crunch. A good ratio of flats to drums. I dont prefer either but my friend does so she got enough of what she wanted. 10 minutes later, the food came. The Creamy shrimp dish is made with udon, shrimp, kimchi, bechamel, mushroom heavy cream, baby octopus, clams, calamari, crab meat, sweet potato crunch, crostini, fish roe. I asked for no kimchi. The dish was delicious. This was the second time I had it and purposefully came back for it. It was creamy, savory, with a little kick. The only issues were that it could have done without the sweet potato crunch, there were way too many mushrooms, and the crab meat was fake and mushy which wasnt good. I loved the upon noodles, the shrimp, clams, calamari, and fish roe. I love the pop of the fish room and dug throughout the noodles to find every ball. Back to the server, he still never came back. He didn't check on us at any point after the food was served. It wasnt until we were practically done with our entrees that he popped up. We told him about the iced tea and offered to replace it but we declined. It would probably taste the exact same. We asked for Togo boxes and in that same breath, he gave us the check. So the whole time he never came over but was ready to drop that bill. A busser came over and delivered the boxes and then we waited another 10 minutes become we flagged a different busses to get our server so we could pay and leave. I was a bit apprehensive at first, as at home in NJ, Korean BBQ places are like Rodizio. So for a far less price, they just keep bringing the meats as long as you want, leaving you with the "meat sweats." Well, this place showed me that it truly can be worth it. While expensive, the QUALITY of the cuts of meat were nothing short of amazing. It's like they only served you the best pieces of the best cuts. Absolutely delicious! Plus their grill style doesn't trap the grease like most do, so they don't have to come change it out, & you and your clothes don't smell of smoke when you're done.
