Last week was my first time dining at KYU and they missed the mark. I provided feedback privately via email as well as in the survey that came after the reservation but did not hear back. To summarize the experience - Food: We ordered the following - Hamachi Crudo, Hamachi Crispy Rice, Pork Gyoza, Chilean Seabass as well as drinks. All four dishes were average, I'd rate 3 out of 5 stars. Considering the price point--everything was fine, but not memorable. Pacing: All dishes arrived very quickly, which wasn't ideal, as hot items began getting cold before we could enjoy them. Service issue: The main concern was the service. Midway through dinner, my friend ordered a second glass of wine. I told our server I would like another shortly, as I still had half a glass. She did not return, so I later asked another staff member for my second glass. A few minutes later, our original server returned and asked if we wanted dessert. We declined, and she immediately responded: "I know you asked for another glass of wine, but my manager said we need the table back, so you can order from the bar." This felt unprofessional and caught us off guard. I asked for clarification, "You're saying I cannot get the drink I already ordered because we didn't order dessert?", and she repeated that they needed the table, then walked away. The interaction was uncomfortable and soured the experience. I have a hard time believing the manager approved the messaging that we can order dessert but if not, they need the table back (and will not bring the drink which was ordered earlier). At that point, my friend still had half a glass of wine, but I had none. Our bottle of sparkling water was also empty and we were never offered more. Shortly after, the check was brought over, along with an offer for 1 complimentary glass of wine at the bar (for me only, not my friend). However, there was no available seating at the bar, and given how rushed we felt, we chose to leave. We were there for barely 90 minutes, and there was no indication during the reservation process of a strict 90-minute time limit. I have never felt so rushed or unappreciated at a restaurant, and it was a disappointing experience. The lack of response from management was also concerning. THIS is how you make a sandwich! I dropped by for lunch and was able to do a pick up order, and staff was nice to let me take a table outside their restaurant as I'm sure they were prepping for dinner service. I got the spicy chicken sandwich and the short rib sandwich and they did NOT disappoint. The buns were fluffy (and toasted), the meats were juicy and savory. I will need to come back to try out their dinner menu, but as far as lunch goes, I will be back if I am in the area! read more

Every so often we'll splurge on a meal. Last night we celebrated my daughter's birthday and her professional accomplishment. Kyu is large, loud, trendy and young. Amongst several hundred patrons enjoying Saturday night out, my husband and I were by far the oldest people there. By a lot! So here comes the splurge: we went with the eight-course tasting menu for $125 each. Note that the courses are not what you'd necessarily expect, ie a bowl of special rice, a sweet potato ... you get the picture. While it was fun, they designate the courses. No denying everything was really good (except maybe the cauliflower), but with an interesting menu I think you're better off picking and choosing. Fried kale (and I'm no fan of kale) is a great snack. Korean fried chicken, the aforementioned rice (purposely) under-cooked -- the sweet potato which tasted like a rich dessert.... Short ribs (not my thing.) I'm glad I went. I likely won't return. But if you're under 40, enjoy Asian fusion and like 'trendy' give 'em a go. BTW, the wine list is pricey, but they do allow you to bring your own. The corkage fee is $35. read more

Very cool ambiance. It's a pretty open space and well decorated. It's dimly lit and has a nice vibe. The dishes are designed for sharing. You will need a few to feed each person, but there are some larger dishes that can be split. Everything was so good. The beef short rib was fall off the bone. The korean fried chicken was so delicious. Crispy pork buns were soft with delicious crunchy pork inside. The only bad dish was the thai rice pot. The rice is specifically undercooked, per the waiter. No one ate their portion of that. It just sat. Service was so good. We ordered several drinks that the bar had run out of, but our server was so nice about it. She ended up comping the drink after several go arounds with the bar tender. She was amazing though. I was actually really excited to try this place, but it was unfortunately underwhelming. It gave me chain restaurant vibes that doesn't feel warm or lively. The staff was nice and attentive and gave us a lot of recommendations. We started with the pork belly bao buns and the hamachi crispy rice. The bao buns were the best thing we had during this entire meal, and I also enjoyed the crispy rice, but I found it odd that it didn't come with a side sauce or teriyaki sauce. For my entree we got the korean fried chicken, but this was so disappointing and I would not call this fried chicken. It lacked any breading and crispiness, which is necessary in fried chicken. I was part of a party of 6 and they waited until the majority of our table arrived in order to get seated but no problem, we camped out at the bar. I got 'grandpas cough medicine' and I really liked it except it was garnished with one scrunch of too much fresh pepper. The other drink I got was 'the world is yours' and it was good but sweet. And for the food: -steak tartare- soo good and really fresh. pickle forward but we loved it!!! -pork belly bao buns- didn't get to try but looked good! -tuna crispy rice- a top tier tuna crispy rice, was flavorful and the rice was fresh out of the frier -krunchy kale- I loved the vinegary type of sauce it comes with, it really brightens up the earthy kale but some pieces were greasy -grilled broccoli- delish and they gave plenty -duck burnt ends- it just looked like normal sliced duck to me, but was good! -hamachi crudo- looked good but didn't get to try -king crab rice pot- delishhhhh, made the right way not too salty, rice was cooked to perfection -beef short rib- a favorite at our table!!! so smokey and tender and flavorful!!! Decent brunch place that leans more towards Asian cuisine than your typical brunch with eggs and bacon. We got the tuna crispy rice, which is one of the better crispy rice I have had in NYC. The rice was very crispy and warm whereas the tuna was a bit chilled but blended well with the crispy rice. We got the avocado toast, basic but yummy. Is this a must have? Not really. We had the Japanese skillet pancakes with matcha cream and this was so good. Subtle hint of matcha and the pancake was very moist and eggy-like. Also got the cinnamon roll but it was super heavy and I did not want to fill up on this. In the end, we got Thai tea shaved ice which was phenomenal. The shaved ice was refreshing and the flavor of Thai tea permeates the entire shaved ice, whereas other places the flavor only hits the top layer of shaved ice. We tried the KYU tasting menu, I loved everything except for the appetizer with the kale chips, they were a 2/10 for me , the fried chicken was disappointing they were dry and bland even with the sauce, and the sweet potato was just alright it tasted more like a dessert than anything else . I really enjoyed the crispy rice , the clay pot rice ( we had order it with king crab) a great combo , the cauliflower were surprisingly tasty the sauce was the star would go great with since chicken honestly , and the short rib was very tender fall off the bone . The real star was the coconut layered cake , wow I would go back just for that cake . Over all would I recommend, ehh pricey for ok food. This place has a great interior, nice open kitchen and good atmospheric lighting. it smells great too. service was okay, there was tons of bussers so i always had water, but took awhile to get my order taken and to get the check. food wise it wasn't the best especially for the price, the tou pay $32 for 4 tuna crispy rice and i felt that the rice desperately needed more sauce and was dry. the fish itself was great quality and tasty but the rice portion was large, overpowering and dry. overall felt like the ratio was off in a few different ways here. we also ordered the duck confit thai rice bowl, which wasn't my favorite. it had a super overpowering cilantro flavor and lacked a depth of flavor in general. brought it home and seasoned it a bit more so it wasn't just cilantro flavored and it was much better. rice did have a nice crisp though and duck was tasty when i did get duck filled bites. i also got the korean fried chicken, it's definitely not korean fried chicken in a classic sense. it had a nice crisp but flavor wise was more reminiscent of a latin american and thai fusion dish. the main sauce was a spicy mayo sort and a citrusy lime undertone was present. it had a great crisp and i overall enjoyed the flavor. it was extremely juicy and the chicken was definitely high quality. the best parts of the meal though were the sweet potato and the drinks. i'd come back purely because those were so good. the sweet potato was massive and quite tasty. it was overly torched though and had a sort of bitter butane flavor on top but Japanese sweet potatoes are a personal favorite of mine and outside of that it was perfectly caramelized and creamy. i got the banana old fashion and it was a fantastically well balanced drink. a good first taste of whisky and then the aftertaste of banana hits you. a fantastic drink that isn't too sweet nor too dry. overall for the price the food isn't my favorite, there's much better eats in new york for the same price and cheaper. the entree portions are large at least and you can tell they choose high quality ingredients, i think this is a quality joint but not to my personal preference. i'd say come here after dinner - get a sweet potato and enjoy some of their expertly crafted drinks and you'll be leaving happy! read more

Came here last night for my birthday dinner and wanted to share an honest review. They were very busy, we didn't get seated until about 40 minutes after our reservation, which was definitely frustrating at first. That said, the way they handled it really mattered. They comped a good amount of food for our table and even brought out a glass of bubbles, which we really appreciated. And honestly... the food completely made up for the wait. Everything we ordered was incredible. The ambiance was also amazing, and the music was SO good, which made the whole night feel really fun and special. My first experience with Kyu was in Miami and I became hooked since then. I tried out the NYC one and it was just as good. Came here for a birthday dinner and had a great experience! The dining area reminded me of a flashy casino or nightclub, so I wasn't surprised to find out they have locations in Las Vegas and Miami. The gimmicky ambiance made me a little wary that the food wouldn't be that good, but thankfully I enjoyed basically all of our dishes. The japanese sweet potato, short rib, and duck breast really blew me away. My friends really liked the burrata and octopus as well. The skippable dishes were probably the bone marrow and the tuna crispy rice. The drinks were great too: I liked my sweet potato cocktail but the whole cocktail menu seems solid given that the few sips I had of my friends' drinks were good too. Service was attentive and friendly. It was my friend's birthday, we got dessert on the house which was nice. With tax and tip our total came out to around $125pp--kind of pricey but expected given the ambiance. Had a good time and would recommend for special occasions! read more

Yikes. I try to stay away from leaving negative reviews and focus on offering positive praise when i have great dining experiences. Every now and then I leave a negative when it's something I wish somebody else would've told me before choosing to dine at a certain place. The TLDR is if you want an extraordinarily overpriced dinner with very very subpar Asian fusion, in a space that is very large and pretty empty/dead - then you will love this place. Came with a group of 5 on a Thursday night. We had been to a few places around the corner on Bond street prior, all of which had really nice crowds and good energy for a Thursday night. We walked into KYU and it was crickets. Massive space - maybe 30 tables - 3 or 4 of which were seated. Not a good sign out of the gate. Figured we could still have a nice night if the food was really great. But it wasn't. Which is a tough pill to swallow given how many other great Asian fusion options there are in NYC (Tao, Nobu, Bond Street etc the list goes on). Everything we ordered was honestly just okay. From the crispy rice to the tartar to the duck to the short rib - nothing was bad but honestly nothing was great. The icing on the cake was the price. Appetizers in the $35-40 range. Entrees in the $50-70 range. Ended up being over $150 a person and we didn't even drink much / no desserts / didn't order a crazy amount of food. Overall very disappointing combination of empty restaurant with low energy, really uninspiring food and crazy price points. There are so so many other good spots in this area - wouldn't recommend wasting your time (or $$) at this one. read more

Like the original location in Miami, they have a great selection of both food and drinks for HH. We ordered: + Pink puppy cocktail + Good morning, Vietnam cocktail + Always money in the banana stand cocktail + Krunchy kale + Baby back ribs + Tuna crispy rice + Japanese sweet potato + Dark chocolate s'mores cake Pink puppy was excellent; it's one of their signatures for a reason. Best food was the cake (one of the greatest desserts ever!!), crispy rice (another signature) and kale. This may just be the best HH deal in town... the portions are the same as if you order off the main menu in the dining room -- for a fraction of the price! Bartenders were super fun and nice, and the atmosphere in the bar area was super festive (the dining room is swanky but had less of a vibe). Cocktails were good, but not $22 good, so happy hour is your best bet. I also tried a sample of the shiso margarita - need to get that next time! 4.5 stars. read more

KYU is a great spot to hit up for a nicer dinner. I liked the dark space with its comfy seats and the fascinating bar. The restaurant appeared to prefer having us choose the pre fixe menu but we couldn't because of a gluten intolerance. The menu was slightly confusing for that aspect as there were several dishes listed as not gluten free but were actually fine or were available with tamari instead of soy sauce. We got way too many plates but everything was super rich. We tried a sweet potato desert made with tons of sugar. It might be the best thing I've eaten in a long time. Also brought out another drink no one ordered and we still got charged for it. But other than that it was great! I got lychee martinis to drink. These were fabulous. The crispy rice was ok. Definitely have had better. It lacked flavor and the rice was a bit hard. Shishito peppers were amazing! Full of flavor with a garlic chili crunch. The corn ribs shocked me. These were soooooo good. They had a aioli on them, I would eat a whole bowl! The chilled noodles were great - they had a peanut sauce. The veggie rice I would skip next time, not much flavor. The pork belly boa buns blew me away. These are insane. Meat is so tender and the bao is so fluffy. Literally one of the best bao buns ever. Another favorite was the fried chicken. This one really shocked me. Cooked to perfection with the best hot sauce on it. Amazing! Overall the food is great. My friend loved Kyu when she went to Miami and we decided to try it in NYC. The restaurant is absolutely beautiful inside. It is perfect for a romantic date or girls night. We came on a Saturday at 8pm and the restaurant was packed. We got seated quickly for our reservation. We definitely overordered but we we wanted to try everything. We got: -Tuna crispy rice: really enjoyed this dish. The tuna was so fresh, but couldn't taste the chili in it. Definitely overpriced at $32, but Kyu is known for this dish so you have to get it -Japanese sweet potato: super interesting dish. The potato was huge and baked with cheese and butter. The sweet and saltiness balanced well. Wish it was warmer though -Short rib: the absolute STAR of the meal. It is huge and around $80, but so worth it. You get a huge slab of melt in your mouth short rib (bone in), with 3 different sauces, 2 different seasonings, and lettuce wraps. I'm literally dreaming of this meat.... -Duck fried rice: the waiters come and mix the rice table side for you. The rice was good but I don't know if I would order it again. On the morning of Sat, Aug 19th I took a nice long tour of lower Manhattan, not by choice (thanks for nothing Mr. MTA Bus Driver Man) and finally made it back up to SoHo where KYU NY. is located. My frustrations of being a tourist in my own city instantly subsided once I walked into KYU NY. What a swanky restaurant, oozing of date night vibes, early in the afternoon. For this meetup, it was a celebration brunch with my friends Anna and Cynthia. We chose family style sharing with the Everything Scones with Chive Miso Butter and Cherry Jam to start. I would say this was an ode to an Everything Bagel with Cream Cheese and Jelly. Such a creative combo, with the scones being deliciously tender and flaky. A good choice. Next up, the Cauliflower with Goat Cheese and Shishito-Herb Vinaigrette. The cauliflower seemed steamed until tender and finished off in the Salamander. Another thoughtful, flavorful dish with 1% of yearly sales going to environmental non-profits. Cool. Next, Tuna Crispy Rice served on top of Smoked Chili...yummy. And lastly the Korean Fried Chicken on top of Chili Butter and braised Spinach. Crisp and delicious. Sharing everything equally gave us the opportunity to have a tasting of each unique flavor and texture. As for service, I must add that the servers were attentive and amenable to all of our asks.
