Oh my soooo yummy. driving through Oregon on our way to Seattle, stopped here for lunch and so happy that we did,. Very cute log cabin, and I heard it was haunted, I got bacon and eggs and hashbrowns, and an English muffin and the hobby got the chicken cream soup with rice and it was very good food and excellent service. The food was absolutely delicious. The hashbrowns were super hot. I told the waitress it was really good and she said the chef has been there for over 20 years, you can tell she takes pride in her food atmosphere was fantastic and I wish I could've stayed there for the night and some room, just to see that goes lol. Love this place! We come here every time we are on Mt. Hood for vacation. The ambiance is perfect: rustic with a ton of retro charm. So cozy. Waitstaff are always so friendly and will strike up a conversation. But I wouldn't be leaving a review if it wasn't for the delicious food. Especially the fish and chips! It's our fave thing lace to get fish and chips in this area. They use halibut. It's perfectly battered, not too much and not too little breading. Very crispy, browned just right, and the fish is always so buttery and moist. Tartar sauce and cole slaw are very good. Try the stomping mountain toast for breakfast! It's decadent but crispy and tasty. I can't wait to go back and try the fried chicken special. Definitely check this place out! read more

I honestly did not know what to expect when coming to this restaurant since I've never been to Mt Hood. Right off the bat though, I do agree with the other reviewers, the staff was amazing and wonderful. Really nice people. I ordered the flat iron steak, medium rare, with mashed potatoes. I thought this was a great choice. It surprisingly came with a lot of stuff. Came with a soup or salad; I chose the salad. And it also came with a side of green beans and a slice of garlic bread. Now, the steak and the bread was decent, but for most of the sides, I have to cringe a bit. Green beans were overcooked and didn't taste so great. Might've come from a can for all I know. And as for the mashed potato, it was not the best. I definitely have had better. Maybe I'm just used to it being mashed with a lot of butter to get a more rich and creamy texture. This was more crumbly. The brown gravy helped a lot here. Salad was fresh and good. My friend's fish and chips looked a lot better honestly. Judging by other peoples' reviews, sounds like that's the thing to get here. Wished I knew that before hand. I think I'll have to recommend getting that instead of the steak for dinner. Oh well. But yesterday's breakfast was probably the worst I've ever had Cold, flavorless, and when I asked for my steak to be recooked for the 3rd time, they simply put it in the microwave. Bottom Line: Best Halibut and Chips in the World! Three months since my last Yelp review thanks to COVID 19. :-( I am a high risk person so pretty much stayed at home. Now that the economy is reopening, it's time for a ROAD TRIP!!! With social distancing, face masks in public places and a gallon of hand sanitizer of course. We were on our way to the Bend area and were looking for a place for lunch. It's funny how the pandemic has changed how I search for restaurants. Before Covid (BC), I would search Yelp and pick the best restaurant. After Covid (AC), I drive around and look for a restaurant which is open, has takeout, and has something I would like to eat. At 55 MPH, it's a challenge. LOL Then out of nowhere, "Open" "Halibut and Chips", "Take Out". Heck yeah! I usually don't choose halibut for fish and chips because it tends to be dry but May-July is halibut season in the PNW so fresh halibut is readily available. Called in our order from their parking lot and they said it would be ready in 10 minutes. Wow, that's faster my local Taco Bell. Put my mask on and picked up my order. The people who work here are super nice and they are following the Covid guidelines. The Halibut and Chips were absolutely fabulous. Moist and tender with a nice crust. It's battered not Panko which is what I prefer. The fries and slaw were great too. If you are in the Mt. Hood area, this is the place for fish and chips. As an Oregon Native, it's unthinkable that this writer managed to successfully ignore this venerable old inn for 71 years, but there it is. After reading extremely mixed reviews, this writer's curiosity was piqued to a peak and the halibut fish & chips about which so much had been written was my target. Prior to today, the title of "Best" belonged, unchallenged, to a now defunct Davidson's on S.E. Woodstock. Nothing else came close. Now, however, a new "Best" wears that crown: The Barlow Trail. From walking in the door to walking out (and everything in between), the experience was charming. My wife and I were greeted immediately and directed to comfortable seating in the bar since, ten minutes after opening at 11 a.m., the main dining room was full. Our orders were taken within a minute of being seated, and drinks arrived a minute after that, delivered by a friendly waitress who acted like we were family. Our two orders of two-piece halibut fish and chips arrived ten minutes later, worth every single second of the wait. Each plate featured two hefty pieces of solid, beer-battered fish, a generous portion of seasoned fries, and a bowl of coleslaw. Not being a fan of coleslaw, I can only attest to the excellent quality of everything else. The only changes I would like to see is a switch to Coke products and an abandoning of the sports bar ambiance. I know, tilting at windmills... Final word: Highly recommended! read more

Crap food crap service. Food was served cold. How is French toast served cold? If it was room temperature, it would've been warmer. It was actually served cold. It must've been sitting on a cold counter for quite some time. Has this business ever heard of a salamander, a novel concept to keep food warm while it's sitting in the window for extended periods of time. Or just serve the food when it's hot. Or just leave it on a cold counter... until it is so cold that it can not be enjoyed. Part of my order was not brought to the table and I was charged for it. We were never checked on to see if everything was all right, or if everything was brought, or if our food was hot. Visited this restaurant twice during my week stay in Rhododendron. I initially had it bookmarked so that I could try the fish and chips but also came back to have breakfast. Firstly, the staff is absolutely wonderful. Next, food. Breakfast: Great cup of coffee. I ordered the breakfast burrito. I'd call it more of a breakfast enchilada. The scramble is wrapped in a tortilla and topped with salsa and cheese. SUPER fresh ingredients. Dinner: I got the hot wings appetizer and the halibut fish and chips. Solid wings and amazing fish and chips. They were meatier than a normal fish and chips. OH and their fries are perfect. (Note: The fish and chips come with coleslaw but I didn't want any.) Stopped in for a late lunch today and was very glad to have done so. My daughter and I split an order of fish and chips and we each had cups of chili. The chili was hot and flavorful, on the tomato-ey side, with plenty of meat and beans. The fish was perfectly fried, with a flavorful batter and some tangy homemade tartar sauce, and the fries were honestly some of the best I've ever had. The service was warm and friendly, as was the atmosphere. If I lived in the area I'd stop in regularly; as it is I now have a reason to come this way again. read more

We ordered: 2 kids Belgian waffle w/strawberry meals (came with hot cocoa); the Belgian waffle was served as just a half with nothing else on the plate. I wonder if this was by mistake, as most places give the whole waffle for kids meals.... and the hot cocoa was scalding hot (too hot for children!) I drove by and decided to turn around and try the Breakfast menus. It's a nice place and I was happy to take in the atmosphere. I order the Biscuits and Gravy with eggs and Bacon. I think we need to work on our biscuit making. It's was the worst biscuits I've ever had! They were drop biscuits at best. No folds in the dough at all! There were not flakey nor could I see a fold in the dough AT ALL! it's like basically scooped out some dough with your hand inside a pot dripped it onto pan and lightly attempted to bake it. Pulled it out early from the oven and then drowned it with Gravy. They gravy was "Ok" (I guess) but the biscuits killed the gravy taste, cuz the dough as still uncooked! After spending the day on Timothy Lake, it was time to head down the mountain. We were tired and hungry. Our original plan was crispy bean burritos in Sandy, but I found Barlow Trail on the map and it promised fish and chips and Google said it was "not busy." We decided to pull over and continue our adventure. As promised, the place was pretty quiet. We sat, were greeted, and provided water and menus. Our waitperson swung by and said they were out of the fish and chips. I thanked her for letting us know. "The truck comes tomorrow," she added. It took too long to see her again. By then, the booth next to us had people, too. She finally came back and took their order first. Then she got around to us. We ordered a patty melt, fried chicken, and meat loaf. Soon our neighbors got their food. "That didn't take too long," I remarked. Then we waited an hour. Closing time was approaching, it was getting late, we were regretting our decision to stop, and yet another table had arrived after us and received their food. During this time we got water refills, but our server never reappeared to check on us. Honestly, the place wasn't really that busy. Finally I went to check. I was worried our ticket didn't even exist. We were going to cut our losses, pay for our salads, and just go. We were over it. But she said it would be right out, and it was. The fried chicken was piping hot and steam came out when I dug in, but the baked potato was barely warm and the butter wouldn't melt. Everything else seemed okay. The dishes were hit and miss. The fried chicken was weird. Not horrible, but not that good, either. Our son liked his meat loaf and mashed potatoes. My wife said something was off with the patty melt, like the meat seemed too old, and she only ate a few bites. I did like my salad. We didn't eat that much, boxed the chicken, and fled. We were going home way later than we had hoped. We were offered a weak explanation that too many orders came in at once, but no apologies. Staff was fairly indifferent. A tepid "meh" response. I don't think the number of orders was really the problem. I think it more likely the kitchen just couldn't do too many things at once. I've been here before and it's always been good. Food and atmosphere the same as always, but I don't recommend the breakfast shift. Waitress was rude at the end when she remarked about one of the guests eating all their food. A huge no-no. The waitress ruined the experience and guaranteed no return at least during the morning shift. So be forewarned, if you are thinking of breakfast and you have a healthy appetite and/or you're overweight - skip it and go somewhere else.
