I was discriminated against last night and not allowed entry. I was told by the bouncers and, Ben the manager, that I was not allowed to enter because I had on joggers and they did not allow "sweat pants" after 10 PM. The upsetting part was my friend literally walked in a minute before I did with sweats on w/ no issue. Then, after I was denied entry, I stood and watched two white males in sweatpants allowed entry. The manager lied and told me certain people will get in w/ sweats on if they get "lost in the crowd" and the bouncers do not see them. This was a lie as every single person has to stop at a bouncer before getting inside. There is no getting lost in a crowd. This place discriminates against 'certain people.' This is the worst customer service I have ever experienced. I met up with a group of friends upon walking in, and it took me a while to even interact with wait staff. I then was going to order a drink, and the waiter attempted to confiscate my legal state id. Luckily I was able to get it back before getting kicked out of the place without doing anything wrong. The Karen Behind the Mask. Over the past few months I've frequented The Backyard Uptown in Towson. The staff has always been courteous, professional, and polite; however, on Wednesday, April 19, 2020, the experience was completely different. I arrived at approximately 3:00PM for a work meeting, entered the building appropriately, and made my way to the roof top deck. After being seated I immediately began working as I waited for my colleague to arrive. The staff and service were great per usual. At approximately 4:00PM it came to my attention that my colleague had been in an accident, which forced me to run downstairs immediately, leaving my belongings unattended. After meeting my colleague and confirming their safety, I returned back to the restaurant. As I approached the entrance I realized that I left my mask upstairs on the table. I immediately reached for my shirt to cover my nose and mouth, prepared to explain that all my belongings had been left upstairs on the table, including my laptop. The hostess allowed me to explain myself and then I proceed to the roof top deck. I began to reach for my shirt to cover my nose and mouth for a second time when a woman began screaming at me from across the bar, "You can't come in here! You must have a mask on!" Screaming at me for not wearing a mask as she was not wearing one herself. I immediately provided her with the same information that I had given to the hostess and apologized, which of course required me to uncover my nose and mouth. After she ignored my explanation and apology, she continued screaming that I needed to wear a mask. I said, "Ma'am, I just told you, it's upstairs. I have been here for over an hour." She harshly responds, "Well at least put your shirt over your mouth!" The same as I had been trying to do from the moment I walked in, prior to her harassing me. I replied, "You don't have to be rude about it?" She responded, "Yea. I do!" I don't know if she thought I was just some young black college student, but I had no clue who this woman was so nasty and why her delivery was everything but professional. I was absolutely offended and embarrassed. My colleague, a white female, was appalled by the woman's grotesque actions and pointed out that she only chose to yell at me, a black male. Racist much? After returning to my seat I immediately asked our server who the manager was so I could express my disgust. Low and behold the manager WAS the person who I wanted to report. And not only are they the manager, but they are apparently the owner - Jill Packo. I am absolutely disgusted that the owner of any establishment would be so classless and unprofessional to a patron or anyone for that matter. If anyone else has experienced or witnessed such a tasteless performance from the owner, I would highly encourage you to share your story, the same as I am committed to doing moving forward. read more

We decided to go upstairs just to take a look and see the seating, the possible view, and if there was a bar when the hostess upstairs was extremely rude asking us to go back to our table. Our experience at this place was absolutely awful. It began with rude hosts then a rude server and bartender as well. No one was friendly at this establishment. We ordered nachos which were just pathetic. They consisted of Tostitos chips you can buy at the grocery store with shredded cheese on top which looked like it had been microwaved. Not only did it not taste good, but 3/4 of the plate wasn't edible. It was burnt. We did order drinks which weren't awful but not the best either. I asked for a simple drink and the server said they weren't able to make it, however I did see that they had everything they needed behind the bar to do so. We decided not to order anything else due to this. While we still left a good tip for a server whom did not deserve one at all, every employee was still rude as we walked out. The only person who was slightly pleasant to us was an older gentleman whom we believe was an owner or manager. We will not be back. read more

Pretty good place. We had good service, and the food was really good. My friend got wings and nachos. The nachos were piled high, and the wings were delicious. I got the lemon pepper chicken along with a side salad and roasted peppers/onions. It was really good, cooked well. Our waitress was really pleasant and had great timing. This establishment is more worried about gaining a few dollars than the satisfaction of its customers. The owners would rather argue back and forth with their customers rather than reprimand unruly employees and fix the quality of their food. The calamari was rubbery and barely cooked, which I still paid for and never asked for a refund. Of course, if I ordered items to go and my appetizer wasn't enjoyable, I would want to cancel those items. They lie to customers, making up rules and saying things are "policy" but do not have it written anywhere or can show customers. According to the owner, it's "common sense", which is a very rude comment, as I was being nothing but respectful. The owner is extremely rude and disrespectful, I have no clue how this business is even still running. Such nasty and rude people, I'm not sure if it's directed toward certain people, if you get what I'm saying .... but as you can see from the other reviews, this place is a huge NO! Decided to choose Backyard to celebrate my sisters 21st after my older sister flew in from NC, and I drove 2 hours to Towson. There was 7 of us looking forward to a great evening until our server quickly ruined that for us. I believe her name was Anna (never introduced herself). To start off, she didn't greet us until about 25 minutes in to sitting at the table, and when she did refused to take a girl at the tables military ID. We ordered our first round of drinks and was asked if we wanted food. When we were trying to decide she quickly cut us off and said "yes or no", in the nastiest tone. We put in some apps and told her we will order the rest of the food in a bit. We ordered food after not seeing her for quite some time and all of our first round drinks were empty 2 hours in. When we asked if we could order another drink after she finally came over, she completely ignored the question along with our question about lighting the fireplace. Our food finally came and we asked for ketchup and salt. She said "extra condiments are 50 cents extra per condiment", when she never even brought us out condiments to begin with. We finally got the condiments AFTER our food was gone and I had to ask for a cup of water 4 different times. There was other snarky remarks made in between, so finally we asked to speak to a manager which I have NEVER had to do. My sisters and I all work in the food service industry and understand the outs and ins of being a server. The manager basically told us his thoughts on the server and said he knew exactly what we were talking about with her. He told us 20% gratuity would no longer be applied (which we were going to tip 20% anyway as we are servers ourselves). Backyard has a 20% gratuity rule with parties of 6 or more so I'm not sure if that's why she thought she could act the way she was towards us or what. She came over after our talk with him... never apologized or anything, said "my manager was wrong 20% is automatically applied to your checks", and started to check each of us out. I have never been SO disrespected by a server up until this point. Barleys should really take a look at the staff they have on hand. read more

My family ate at Barley's Backyard Uptown on Saturday, April 10th around 3pm. I ordered a grilled chicken sandwich with fries. I asked for lettuce and tomato only on my sandwich. My sandwich was brought to me with spinach, feta and garlic aioli on it. I cannot eat feta and I do not like aioli so I returned the sandwich. When my sandwich was brought back the 2nd time, the spinach was gone but the feta & garlic aioli were still on the sandwich. I returned the sandwich a 2nd time. When my sandwich was brought to me for the 3rd time, the feta & garlic aioli had been haphazardly scrapped off of the sandwich - with remnants still on the sandwich. This is disgusting, unacceptable, and unsanitary. As I mentioned to the manager, if I were allergic to feta and aioli, that sandwich would cause problems for me. A cook should not scrape things off of food and return the food to the customer. There was remnants (on my food) of something I cannot eat; that is a liability. Also, in this current COVID-19 environment, any "customer touched food" that is returned to the kitchen should immediately be thrown out. The cook should not handle food that a customer has touched, and then continue handling food that he/she is cooking for other guests. Extremely unsanitary. read more
