Decided to pop in on a power yoga class yesterday afternoon (Sunday). I've taken maybe 3-4 yoga classes at different places, so the whole yoga thing is pretty new. I do triathlons and have been looking for ways to increase flexibility and core, so figured "what the heck." Very solid class. Teacher (can't remember his name) was relaxed and helpful. Came over a couple of times to help me with poses (which I needed b/c I don't know much on yoga). I definitely left happy and will head back for a class again. read more

I bought the deal with two other friends and the only time that worked for all of our schedules was 6:30 AM. It was the most relaxing thing ever. Great experience, highly recommend. Small class sizes help newbies like us get good one-on-one interaction with the instructor. read more

I took some classes here and really liked it. The instructors know the technique and work with you so you get the most out of it. They have a trial period that's a great value. Be prepared to be sore if you're not used to it.. I sure was but it felt awesome at the same time. read more

Yes - Robert is the tough love type. It's not for everyone, but it never bothered me much. Wai-Mei however, stands out as far and away the best yoga instructor I have ever had. Her instructions are impeccably clear and detailed, always reminding you to breathe at the right moments during every pose and work on those easy to forget postural details. Incorporating both the breathing and pose instructions smoothly in a fast paced vinyasa class is an extremely hard puzzle to figure out, and she has absolutely mastered it. You would think in order to accomplish this, she would be reciting the same script during each session, but that's not the case. Although she keeps a consistent framework, she improvises and tailors the class to the group of student's she's teaching. After a few sessions, you realize that she is keeping track of the progression of every single one of her students and incorporating individualized instruction and poses to help each student work on new things, progress, and push to the next level of their practice. Finally, the standard series of poses she has chosen to incorporate into her class are all excellent. A lot of times I see instructors incorporate "fancier" inversions or balancing poses that can be out of sync with the skill level of the class and don't actively contribute to improving posture (in my opinion yoga is all about posture). Wai-Mei's poses seem to all be aligned with this simple concept and while they may not by flashy, they are effective and you end up leaving the class feeling absolutely great. Anyway, in my opinion it's a shame that there's so much controversy surrounding barefoot yoga. Wai-Mei is a world class instructor and we're lucky to have her in Davis. read more

I took my niece to Baby and Me Yoga Class this morning! Had a wonderful time! Waimei is a wonderful, kind, and intuitive instructor. Definitely a class for any moms, dads, or others and baby, and you don't need to be a yoga expert! read more

As not all studios are for everyone, I love classes at Barefoot. Robert is amazing...patient, kind, and has taken the time to work with me on techniques to improve my back and chronic pain. It is quite a workout at Barefoot, which is perfect for me and my lifestyle, but be prepared if you aren't used to an active yoga session. I usually get rather sweaty and can be sore after the session, but I always feel great afterwards. I like the welcoming environment and all teachers at this studio are different, but united in their yoga style. My favorite part of going here is Robert's understanding of "type A" personalities and how to get us "Type A's" to calm down and understand that yoga is a lifelong process. If you approach yoga in a way to continuously learn over a lifetime and gain some understanding about yourself, then Barefoot is for you. read more

This is the best yoga studio I have ever been to. I've practiced yoga in various cities in Texas and tried two other yoga studios in Davis, and this is the best studio hands down. This yoga studio has been an incredible blessing for me. I absolutely adore going to the vinyasa classes, and I've also tried the Restorative class which is very relaxing. The teachers are amazing - helpful, attentive, friendly, and have a calming, grounding presence. Wei-Mei, Robert, and Olga are fantastic instructors. They take the time to correct your poses and show you the right way to do them, so I've learned so much at this studio. I purchased a Groupon for 2 months of unlimited classes, and I'm going to purchase a 6 month unlimited membership after because I love it so much. read more

Wonderful studio. Very personable. The instructors are really friendly. Robert is so kind and always remembers everyone. They are really good about coming around and giving personal corrections. I like that each class is a little different, but always familiar - It's great for rounding out your practice. And I love the heated studio, and always sat in the front left, right under the vent. I haven't been here in awhile because a heated studio finally opened up about 30 minutes closer to me, but I really miss it here and used to drive the 40 minutes each way just to come. read more

I attended the Gentle Flow class with Brysan and it worked wonders for my body! It is a great studio and Brysan did a wonderful job leading us. The environment is comfortable and I walked away better relaxed than I'd been in weeks. read more

My yoga practice has changed SO much since I started going to barefoot (for the better). Previously I had mostly gone to yoga to the people and then a few smaller studios. The adjustments and comments are so helpful and I have really learned to be much more aware of my body during each pose. I also really appreciate that it's a family run studio. read more

My boyfriend and I have been going to Barefoot Yoga since January and we're hooked. We were new to yoga and unsure which class we would like to take. We chose to purchase the intro pass and went to each class for a week. Each instructor was highly skilled and patient with us. After class, the instructor was around to answer our questions and offer helpful hints. I would highly recommend Barefoot Yoga! read more

I love going to classes. Two of the newer teachers are my personal favorites: Olga and Sarah, I highly recommend their classes! I've heard weird things about Robert so I've never been to a class of his but all of the other instructors have been great. read more

This studio is really great! The instructors are kind, attentive, and very good at adjusting the skill level of the class as needed. Your postures will definitely see improvement as Wa-Mei or Robert will help you out several times during class. If you are looking for a studio that is unpretentious, has good energy, and gives you a good workout, then Barefoot Yoga is for you! read more

I only have good things to say about this studio. The instructors are super friendly and inviting and the environment is the opposite of pretentious. I love Wei Mei's deep stretch class on Thursday and Sunday; her instruction is clear and the sequences make so much sense together. They also offer great class packages that are much more affordable than other studios in town, and if you just want to drop in, it's only $15. read more

Barefoot Yoga is the best yoga studio I have ever been to. I was disappointed that I discovered the studio during my last quarter at UC Davis. I would move there just for the yoga if I could. Robert is an amazing instructor. He worked with me toward my own practice and really helped me improve, which I appreciated so much. The power flow session is the best hour and a half workout. I felt relaxed, yet rejuvenated after every single work out. The prices are a little up there for a college student budget, but I'm telling you, it is worth every penny. Plus there is a great Yelp deal! read more

This is a fantastic studio near downtown Davis! I definitely advise getting the YELP deal if you are unsure and still looking into other studios. The instructors were great and always helpful in giving modifications if needed. Highly recommend! read more

I highly recommend this studio. Both of the instructors are terrific, and the classes generally made me feel like I got a good workout without being overly sore. I often went to the 10am or 4pm classes, where I was one of 2-4 students and got a lot of personal attention -- my poses are waaay better than before. The only downside to the studio is the cost. It's no different at other yoga studios, but it's the only thing that could keep me away when I move back to Davis! read more

Robert and Wei-Mei changed my life. I had never entered a yoga studio until I began practicing at Barefoot Yoga and so thankful that they gave me a taste of authentic yoga. I encourage you to surrender to their magic and experience yoga with them for yourself. You will not be disappointed. read more

Attended a Monday morning class with Robert, drop in, from out of town. He was very serious about the practice, and asked me why I do yoga - which was slightly off-putting because I felt I had to prove myself (after practicing for 15 years I don't need to prove myself)...but he was a great teacher. I welcomed the adjustments that others have negatively reviewed on Yelp. The studio was warm, not hot, and I liked the individual attention. read more

My experience taking a class from Robert was so disturbing that with reports of sexual harassment in the news I was reminded of it and felt I had a responsibility to warn other women. I'm not surprised to see that other women have left reviews about his inappropriate touching but when this happened to me a few years ago it was only mentioned on DavisWiki. Thankfully it was mentioned there because I got to see Robert's response and not even bother with second guessing myself. My first clas was with Wai Mei and it was great. Based on that class alone I paid for an entire month in advance but after my second class I never returned to the studio. It was 3 years ago and in order to be accurate I can only give an outline but I felt uncomfortable from the start. There was an awkward exchange before class that looking back my gut was already responding to Robert. Besides myself the only other people taking the class were a mother and daughter which was in contrast to the full room in my first class. What I recall most about Robert's touch being inappropriate was that he pressed the length of his body up against mine. While I was in warrior pose he could not have found a way to have been touching me more, it was like he was enveloping and pushing into me and it was not only strange but despite having taken many classes from many different instructors very different from ANYTHING I'd experienced before. It felt "off", "too much" and overly personal. I'd had plenty of adjustments done before by both male and female instructors and never wondered if my instructor was attempting to violate me or act in a sexualized manner but I wondered when Robert did. The next part is difficult to explain but I think a lot of women will recognize it. I was having a bad day, I wanted a good experience like a yoga class. After the class ended, Robert was in a narrow doorway I had to pass through (I don't recall if exit of studio or building, it was evening time and the last class of day). He asked if I "enjoyed the class" and I said "yes". This haunted me later and still for two reasons. 1) I had just told someone who made me feel uncomfortable I enjoyed it because I didn't want to feel bad and wanted to avoid confrontation & 2) There was something creepy about it After the class I went home and looked online, there was no mention of this inappropriate touching on yelp but then I found it on DavisWiki. Even tho DavisWiki confirmed I wasn't "overreacting", I still felt shaken. I ended up going to a friends house because the experience was disturbing and brought up some feelings/memories regarding a sexual assault from my past. When I arrived my friend was on the phone with a woman who was familiar with Robert's behavior and said he was a predator to avoid. I considered going back to only classes by Wai Mei but I couldn't bring myself to step foot in studio again. I didn't have much money at the time so it was a financial loss I felt but was fine with. I feel bad I didn't create a yelp account earlier to warn others. I'd say I can't believe this is still happening but... read more

I think it's good for me to shape the body! And I have attended some class here! It's really useful! The teacher is very good!

The environment here is very decent. I really like doing yoga here with the big French windows, Indian style curtains, and the fragrance. Additionally, the teachers here are very professional and patient. They will create your postures, and they are very friendly to learners at entry level! read more

Teacher's voice sounded great and the studio smelled really good. Coming back today with my friend.

This yoga studio has given me the worst experience I ever had as a yogi thanks to Robert. This guy has some issues. My first couple times, Wai Mei led the class and I thoroughly enjoyed the way she led and had no qualms with her. But just from my experience with Robert made me never even want to chance it that I was going to run into him again. I know a lot of people have written reviews about Robert and how great he is, but I really think this guy has an issue with men. If I'm not mistaken somebody posted a review about their yoga date and the girl said he acted strange towards her boyfriend or something. Anyways, I do believe that Robert has an inferiority complex of some sort and when a male yogi comes along who is more physically capable he is sure to try to put them in their place. My experience with Robert was completely different from many others, I read other bad reviews about him on yelp before attending but hoped things changed. Upon entering we started an awkward conversation and I didn't think much of it. Only 3 other people had showed up and it dawned upon later me why that was so. Also another first timer asked if it was alright that she left early, he basically told her she couldn't leave as she pleased. Once the class began and we started getting into it he began to correct me a little, which is normal, until he offered to place a block under my hand and I refused as my palm was comfortably flat on the ground. He didn't like that very much, and adopted this "so you think you know better than me?" attitude for the rest of the class. Throughout the rest of the class he would order me to do the position a certain way, I'm not making this up, once I told him I was okay, he snaps back and says "Once you've been teaching and practicing yoga for 10 years like me then you can tell me you're okay." and other things like "when I ask you to do something, it would be in your best interest to listen up." He also didn't seize to contradict himself after telling me what I was doing was wrong. And finally exclaimed "Uhh we're not doing that position right now!" if it wasn't awkward enough. Meanwhile, I was just doing a variation of the position he instructed everyone to do. At the end of this dreadful class, he asked to speak with me privately outside. He expressed his discontent of my refusal to comply to his demands and asked me not to come back to his class anymore. I was more than happy not to attend his class ever again. NOT EVER HAVING TO HAVE TO DEAL WITH ROBERT??? FOR SURE SIGN ME UP!!!! But when I tried to express my issues with the way he was treating me he responds, "No, I won't give you a minute, since you wouldn't give me a minute in there" then walks inside. He also thought it was appropriate to tell me I wasn't a real yogi. The problem I had with Robert was that he needs to have 100% control of everyone in the room at all times. I bet he wouldn't even let you take a child's pose if you needed. I'm not an instructor but through my experience over the years that's not how a yoga instructor should treat their students, they should only guide their students through the positions they see fit and it should be up to the student to decide if what the instructor is asking of you falls in line with their goals. Maybe I want an experience that is somewhat more challenging than what Robert was offering? Even if I was wrong with my position, and didn't want Robert's help, he should have respected that and moved on, I'm paying for it after all. There's no point in making it awkward for everybody else in class and ruining their practice. That's all I wanted to say to Robert, but I guess since I wasted 90 minutes of my time in his class when I should have walked out at 20, he wouldn't give me a minute of his. At least the girl who asked if she could leave early would know she could. He's recently changed his time slot to MWF when I remember he used to be on Tue and Thu since I took the class a while ago, but I guess he thinks more people just show up on MWF and it's not him that they're avoiding. For sure avoid those MWF classes like Ebola read more

This studio provides a warm and inviting experience to a beginner yogi like myself. I began understanding the poses after only two sessions due to the excellent attention the instructors give. I got the groupon for one month of yoga and I absolutely loved Wai. She was incredibly challenging and I'd come out of her classes drenched in sweat but feeling amazing. Unfortunately the only classes I could make seemed to be the only classes anyone could make so sometimes it felt like there were 30 people and I barely had the space on my mat to stretch out, which sort of messes with the whole experience of yoga. I also took a long lunch once to make the noon class and there was only one other person there, which was also a little weird. read more

Great little yoga studio - the instructors were super friendly...great for my weekends at home.

A very nice studio. I used the yelp deal to bring my daughter to her first yoga class and it was a great experience for her. I was in town visiting a friend and attended two classes at Barefoot-- they were the best yoga classes I've ever had. It was not only a great workout, but it did wonders for my state of mind. I was really impressed by Robert's attention to all of the students-- though it was a group class, it almost felt like a one-on-one session. Robert cares deeply about what he does and it shows; he is encouraging and provides corrections and suggestions that enhance practice. I left each of those classes feeling like a million bucks. Thank you, Robert! read more

Barefoot Yoga is wonderful...I can't quite pinpoint the difference that I feel between practicing yoga here and other places I've been to but I will try. There is a certain attentiveness, awareness and encouragement that the instructors convey. I always leave Barefoot feeling a little lighter and with a little grin. If you are on the fence about yoga/love yoga/revisiting yoga, I would highly encourage you to give this place a try. read more

The worst yoga experience I have ever had in my life. I have been to various forms of yoga all of my life and have never felt so unwelcome. I experienced very rude behavior from the instructor (who I later learned owns the place) from the time I walked into the door for the first time to try their power yoga to the time I walked out = horrible experience. The experience started out by being greeted by Robert who made me feel very unwelcome to a new studio. He was not busy (for that I could have accepted "short" behavior) but instead I was the only one there. I ended up signing the waiver and giving him the $15 daily rate despite the feeling/vibe I was getting from him. I should have walked out at that point, but instead It only got worse....if I wasn't doing what he said exactly to his liking he singled me out and came over to me using harsh tones not caring that perhaps I had orthopedic issues that would not allow for some postures and did not offer any modifications. I was very shaken up during the entire class and at the same time trying not to disturb the other yoga students. It was the longest 1.5 hours of my life and I will never go back there. I would not suggest this studio for your practice. We all have bad days but this was unacceptable from a business owner who touts being kind to other human beings. read more

one of the best studios I've been to, and I've been to a lot. great, personal instruction and dedicated teachers.

I've been going to Barefoot for a couple of years. It is a great work out, you sweat A LOT and definitely build strength and endurance. The prices are good, cheapest I've found in Davis or Sac. The routines can get monotonous, but sometimes doing the same thing over and over is good because you can really focus on your breath. Robert seems to have a limited repertoire and if you ask him for something different, it throws him off a bit. Rebecca (who only teaches on Sunday :( is the best. Her routines are never the same and her flow is really good. One class I took with her, someone asked for ab work--we NEVER did crunches--she just did a lot of moves that involved the abs. By the end of the class I was so impressed with how much work was done on the abs without me really noticing. Highly recommend this studio. And if you are just beginning or getting back into yoga, it will kick your butt for the first week or two but you will really bounce into shape--so stick with it! read more
